It meant that there was a constant search for shillings to feed the damnedmeters and from time to time we would be plunged into total darkness whilstmum searched for her handbag.
I now find that our new home has a similar system on keys and cards that Ihave to get topped up in the local off licence. I have been assured that thiscan be changed after a period of time but for now I am struggling toremember that it needs to be done and living in fear of being plunged intodarkness and having to search for the modern version of a shilling.

I can clearly recall how stories ofsubterranean Brighton fuelled myinitial interest in local history.
Whether it was tales of tunnelsaround the Pavilion or the myriad ofunderground chambers belonging toSouthern Water, I was always keen tolearn more. In fact, it was the famoustour of Brighton’s sewers that reallysparked my curiosity.
It is indeed true that there is atunnel leading from the Pavilion to theDome, that there are all sorts of vaultsbeneath the coastal roads, and thatEurope’s largest stormwater storagetunnel (20ft high and three miles long)runs beneath the seafront. For everystory that turns out to be true though,there is another that has, well, nofoundation. I suspected that the samewould be the case with Edinburgh’slegendary underground city.
On my latest trip to Scotland’scapital, I set out to see for myselfwhat really exists below ground. Iknew that its subterranean areas aresaid to be in the area of the Old Town;in particular, in the vicinity of theRoyal Mile that runs from EdinburghCastle to Holyrood Palace. The RoyalMile runs along a ridge between twovalleys and, from it, a great number ofpassageways ran off it steeply downeach side. The ground floors of thebuildings on the Royal Mile obviouslyfronted the street but were high upabove ground at the backs as thestructures extended backwards overextremely steep terrain. It is here that the underground city is still evident.
I visited Mary King’s Close (essentially a tourist attraction) which extendsbeneath Edinburgh’s City Chambers. The Chambers were designed by Robertand James Adam in 1753 as the Royal Exchange and built directly aboveseveral old streets, including Mary King’s Close. The old network of streets wasforgotten but it is ever so easy to imagine now what the warren of slim tunnelsand tiny dwellings must have been like 400 years ago. The tour invites furthercuriosity and is both frightening and exciting in equal measures.
Subterranean Edinburgh is said to be evident in other places too, such asthe vaults beneath the South Bridge which date back to 1785. The network ofrooms was rediscovered quite by accident during the 1980s by Norrie Rowan,the former Scottish rugby internationalist, whilst refurbishing a pub.

I ’ve just been on yet another train to Stoke on Trent. From the beginning ofthe journey, there was a man and a woman sitting opposite me who hadclearly just been to a business meeting as they spent almost their entire
journey discussing ‘business’. Although they spent a good 45 minutesdiscussing ‘business’, I had no clue what type of actual business they were in,apart from there seemed to be a lot of ‘apps’ and ‘hacks’ in their workplace. Ihave been out of the upper echelons of the job market for so long now that Istruggle to understand what people actually do – apart from the fact that itall sounds really boring and I’m glad that I’ll never have to do it.
The business couple then ran out of ‘apps’ and ‘end-users’ to talk about andstarted to discuss holidays. The man wanted to go somewhere hot inDecember and the woman suggested that he go to Tunisia via a ferry from theCanary islands... Hmm, I may not know much about hacks, apps and end-users, but I do know that it’s an awfully long way from the Canary Islands toTunisia – especially by bleedin’ boat. Fortunately, the business man andwoman got off the train at Milton Keynes, which explains a lot...
I am in Stoke on this occasion to meet a man who is going to value my latemother’s grandfather clocks. I finallymanaged to find an auctioneer whoerred on the more bearable side ofunpleasant and I’m meeting himtomorrow morning at 10.30. I amhoping that I will be up and with-itbefore the arrival of Mr Not-too-unpleasant, as I am meeting an oldLondon work colleague in Manchester this evening for cocktails. Thisparticular work colleague and I used to famously take clients out for lunchand not return to the office – brandishing a huge bill – until the next day. Oh,the heady days of advertising... Even now that we are both sensible olderwomen, I’m sure nothing will have changed and that we will still behave inexactly the same manner as we did 15 years ago...
I have to admit to not feeling 100 per cent as I’ve just spent five dayspartying in Berlin. The Ex Boyfriend (aka Old Unfaithful) and I managed to fitin a weekend bursting with variety, which ranged from fine-dining andHungarian food to Currywurst and kebabs and managed to accommodatevarious beer-sampling sessions, plus a night of drum and bass and a night ofsalsa. If you haven’t yet been to Berlin, I’d highly recommend it as it’s abouthalf the price of Brighton and everyone drinks beer on the underground –without throwing-up, falling over or behaving like a total arse. Just don’t tryand get there on a ferry from Tunisia...

O ne day we’re going to buy that dog insurance. We pick up the leafletoften enough. We haven’t actually got a dog so it would be prettypointless. Until then, we’ll simply end each supermarket trip by picking
up the dog insurance leaflet. Just as each supermarket trip ends with the pooch pamphlet, so it starts
with the pocket point. This is done by Youngest™ once he’s sitting in the trolleyand we go through the automatic doors. He is so used to having a box of raisinsto eat as we start every trip, that his pointing gesture is as automatic as a bellgoing off when you step onto a jeweller’s mat.
A long shop or trip, my wife refers to as a ‘two raisin problem’ in homage toSherlock Holmes who used to have a two-pipe problem. Forget the raisins andyou’re doomed.
There’s a whole set of codes and rules that lie underneath the surface of‘Parent with Child in Supermarket‘, a kind of Da Vinci Code of Retail. Hiddensigns. Unbreakable contracts. When The Boy was younger and pre-speaking, Iused to wonder why he went loopy around the bakery section. It’s becausehis mum used to give him a pain au raisin (paid for later at the till, let mestress.). Me, being a cruel type, or just not knowing the code, didn’t.
If I ever go without the kids, I walk around the aisle thinking I’ve forgottensomething – and no I’m not thinking cherry tomatoes. I still absent-mindedlyblow raspberries at the till, and have to stop myself cheerily namingeverything I put in the trolley, as if it’s of huge interest. “Milk! Apples! Wine!Yum! Yum Yum!” etc.
Fortunes, in terms ofthe supermarket, fluctuatewith the age of children.
The Boy, aged seven,currently hates thesupermarket. He enactsmoments from You’veBeen Framed before collapsing withboredom near the soup aisle as if hisbones have been removed.Youngest™, two, is just about OK solong as I’ve got thoseaforementioned raisins and he’s“contained“. (Not contained is anightmare. At some point someone’sgoing to break the unwritten codeand lightning will strike).
Patience is always wearing thinthough by the time we get to the till.I’m aware since parenthood of thekindness of strangers. This seemsparticularly true in supermarkets.Strangers – and staff – will often talkto and amuse Youngest™ enough tomake the last section bearable. Iconsider them to be a human versionof the dog leaflet. Just aboutallowing me to complete the foodshopping with my sanity intact.
A s a mother, I’ve had a fewboyfriends, but I guessI’ve never had one so
involved as my new boyfriend. Isay ‘new’ but it’s been sevenmonths. I didn’t realise howdifficult the integration of aboyfriend person into singlemother with small child’s lifewould be. I didn’t realise howindependent I had become infive years. It’s strange becauseI have always wanted a partnerto parent with me, I neverwanted to do it on my own. Ifirmly believe a child shouldhave two parents around them.So they can watch how arelationship works.
I’ve always wanted to have arelationship with a man, notjust for myself but also to givemy child a sense of family.Little did I realise how tricky itmight become. Perhaps when she was younger it might have been easier, butat five years old it’s harder than I thought. My daughter has grownaccustomed to me being completely hers, to being her epicentre. She saysthings like “my mummy! Not your mummy!” to my boyfriend. I want to laugh,I’m sure my boyfriend does not need another mummy.
My boyfriend would like to be some sort of parental figure though. Not astep dad... They’re always negatively depicted... So when my daughter said“will you be my fake dad?” he was actually extremely pleased. After all, he’sbeen there: getting up at night, reassuring her there’s no monsters in herroom; bringing her tons of Disney films, and making her ham sandwicheswhen he’s a strict vegetarian. He gets up with her a few times a week, makesher breakfast and gets her dressed and teeth brushed and out the door forschool more efficiently than I do. She seems to respect him but isn’t superaffectionate or loving towards him.
She seems to resent my partner’s attempts at helping her with reading etc.I tell him she does that with me too. Does she subconsciously wonder if hewill leave like all the other men have? It will just take time. After all, it’s takenme five years to get the odd hug from her! I have felt very in the middlebetween the two people I love.
He has really needed ‘managerial feedback’ from my daughter, but kidsaren’t like that. They don’t say “thanks for bringing me up!” Nor should they.It’s not their fault they’re here! So when “will you be my fake dad?” wasuttered by my daughter, my boyfriend found that a huge compliment. Hemust be doing alright! My daughter said it with sweet naivety, there was nojoke meant, she just literally thought, will you be my other dad-type-man-person? My fake dad. No insult intended. None was taken. In fact he lovesbeing fake dad. I do too. With his presence, he turns this mother and childinto a family.

B aby, it’s cold outside. But that’s no reason togive up on your garden – now is the perfecttime to tidy up and get ready for spring. This

Directors behaving badly?
Think Martin Clunes and NeilMorrissey running a company...Although in two minds as towhether this was an appropriatetopic for wider publication it is animportant subject. This week welook at the not so exciting subjectof directors’ responsibilities whenrunning a company. Think Gary andTony romping around the office andwhat that would bring to yourbusiness. Here’s how the directorsshould behave.
Prime duty
In Star Trek the prime-directive is‘not to interfere with the internalorder of alien civilisations’. In acompany the prime-duty is‘Directors hold a position of trust;their prime-duty is to manage thecompany for the benefit of theshareholders and not for anyindividual shareholder or group ofshareholders’. Not adhering to theprime-duty in your company isunlikely to wipe out an entirecivilisation but it is probably bestnot to chance it.
Statutory duties
The Companies Act 2006 codifiedmany of the issues surrounding‘conflicts of interest’ such that thereare now seven statutory duties. 1) Directors must act within thepowers conferred by the company’sarticles, for example they may notissue shares to further the holdingof a particular shareholder. 2) Directors must promote thesuccess of the company for thebenefit of the shareholders. 3) They must exercise independentjudgement when making decisions.4) Directors must exercisereasonable care, skill and diligenceand higher standards are expectedwhen they have specialist orprofessional knowledge. 5) Theymust avoid all conflicts of interest

Any conflicts in points 1through 7 should be declared to theboard of directors and recorded inthe minutes of the company. Anyfailures to declare can result in fines.
Legal duties
There are also certain legal dutiesto be careful of: 1) Directors whofail to prepare and deliverdocuments on behalf of thecompany could get a criminalrecord and a level 5 fine of up to£5k (now there’s a reason to getyour records to your accountant ontime). 2) Shareholders may takelegal action through the companyagainst any director who ispersonally liable for a loss suffereddue to negligence, default or breachof trust. 3) The Insolvency Act saysproceedings may be broughtagainst the directors if they knewor should have known that thecompany was insolvent or tradingfraudulently with the intent todefraud the creditors. 4) Directorscan be held liable under the Health& Safety at Work Act. 5) There arepersonal liabilities surrounding thedisposal of hazardous waste. And6) The UK Enterprise Act imposes apersonal liability on directors forbreaches of competition rules.
To conclude
As funny as it might be it isprobably fair to say that Gary andTony would last all of three minutesrunning a company. Just make sureyour accountant gets anyinformation they need on time, usetheir company administrationservice and then get on withrunning your business.

A. Q. I’ve heard a lot in the news latelyabout changes to employment law.Could you please give me somedetails as to what’s happening?
A. George Osborne recentlyannounced that the qualifying periodan employee has to obtain before theycan bring a claim for unfair dismissalwill be increased from one year to twoyears with effect from 1 April 2012.Fees could also be introduced foremployees to bring a Tribunal claimfrom 2013. Rumour has it the fees willbe £250 to start a case and a further£1,000 when the case is listed for ahearing. There is to be a consultationperiod over the fees and the groundsupon which an employee will beexempt from paying them.
The national minimum wageincreased this month to £6.08 forworkers over 21. There were also
employer. Make it absolutely clear thatthose allegations were notinvestigated so no assumptionsshould be drawn.
Q. Can I unilaterally cut my employees’pay to get my company through somefinancially difficult times?
A. Cutting staff’s pay may be possiblein certain circumstances. It is crucialthat you take specific legal advice onyour situation as your entitlement willdepend on a number of things. Youneed to consult with staff before youimpose any contract change or elseyou may find yourself facing aconstructive unfair dismissal claim. A Tribunal will want to see that thepay cut was the last resort. If thereare other ways you can save money,the Tribunal will expect you to haveexplored those options first.
