Lateness
It is very important that children arrive at school on time so that their education
is not affected. School begins at 8:55am in the morning and at 1:10pm in the
afternoon. Please help us to ensure that your child gets the most out of their
education by making sure that they are in school on time.
If you are 5 minutes late every day that adds up to over 3 days lost each
year.
Being late everyday can add up to a lot of lost learning time. Please help your
child to be punctual.

At Biggin Hill Primary School Academy we shall:
follow up unexplained absences by a phone call to the parents/carers on the first morning of a
child’s absence
visit the home of absentee children whose parents/carers cannot be contacted by phone and
who have not indicated why their child is absent
inform parents/carers of any concerns regarding the attendance of their child at school,
including lateness
where concerns go unheeded, the educational welfare officer will start the relevant process
support the fining of parents/carers who exceed 20 unauthorised absences in any one term
remind parents of the importance of regular attendance and punctuality in newsletters
publish our attendance rate on the school website/ social media and in the Head Teacher’s
report to governors
publish children’s attendance rates on their annual reports
send out termly letters to parents/carers informing them of their children current attendance
acknowledge and reward good attendance by awarding Gold (100%),
Silver (98 – 99%) and Bronze (96 – 97%) certificates to children termly
award points to each class depending on their weekly attendance
the class at the top of their league each term (lower and upper school) to receive a special
prize, e.g cinema trip, soft play centre visit, disco, bouncy castle, party etc
100% attenders for a whole term are entered into a prize draw to receive a £10 voucher to
reward their attendance record.
START AND END OF THE SCHOOL DAY
School begins at 8:55am (doors open at 8.50am). Children arriving after this time should sign in
in the foyer of Phase 3 entrance and take a ‘I’ve been signed in’ slip with them into class, so the
teacher knows they are late. If it is before 09:30am children will be given a late mark on the register.
Continual late marks will trigger concerns which will be discussed with parents/carers, and if no
improvement is made, a meeting with the Senior Management Team will be arranged. Any child
arriving after 9:30am is marked with a U on the register and this is an unauthorised absence, which
will reduce their overall attendance percentage.
Afternoon sessions begin at 1:10pm and any child arriving after this time but before 1:40pm will also
receive a late mark. After 1:40pm arrivals will be marked with a U which is again an unauthorised
absence.

Key Staff in Phase 1
We take issues of bullying and E-Safety very seriously at Biggin Hill. If you have
any concerns please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance. We encour-
age the children to stay safe on line by
following the SMART rules.
SAFE Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information when chatting or posting online.
Personal information includes your email address, phone number and password.
MEETING Meeting someone you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your
parents’ or carers’ permission and even then only when they can be present. Remember online friends are still strangers even if you have been talking to them for a long time.
ACCEPTING Accepting emails, IM messages, or opening files, pictures or texts from people you don’t know or trust
can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages!
RELIABLE Someone online might lie about who they are, and information on the internet may not be true.
Always check information with other websites, books or someone who knows.
TELL Tell your parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or
worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online.
You can report online abuse to the police at www.thinkuknow.co.uk
Keep up to date by checking the school website

These are the topics we will be looking at this year. We would love you to help
support your child’s learning in these topics. If you have any resources or
interests in these areas please let us know.
Autumn — Superhero's
During this topic the children will explore the world of superheroes'. They
will find out about real life heroes and what they have done As Scientists
they will look at the human body , their super senses, and find out how to
stay healthy. In Geography this term we will explore the world through looking at the
places linked to our heroes. In Design and technology the children will design and make a
superhero vehicle/mask. Our Art will look at the work of Andy Warhol.
Spring — Hull
Within this topic the children will explore local landmarks and learn about
the fishing industry and ports closely linked to Hull. In Science they will de-
velop their knowledge of everyday materials and learn how to sort them in
to different groups. We will look at the life of Amy Johnson, and create time-
lines in History. In Geography the children will find out about stories from around the
world and different cultures. Our Art will look at the moths that were designed and dis-
played all over Hull and the children will develop their own colour mixing skills.
Summer — Seaside
As part of this topic the children will be asked to explore the seaside
and other holiday destinations. They will find out about rock pools and
the creatures that live there. They will also visit a local beach to link
with this . As Scientists they will explore their local environment and
discover a variety of plants, learning about what they need. In History they will learn
about how Victorian holidays differ from today's. They will also find out about Grace
Darling and her life. In Geography the children will compare the seaside to one in anoth-
er country. The children will explore the work of Andy Goldsworthy in Art and create
their own Landart.
Practical Information
Reading: The children will be given two RWI books to take
home, we ask that books are brought in each day. Our reading
challenge, read 5 times a week and get a prize.
Spelling: Spelling lists will be sent out each week for the children to learn
at home. They will be tested on these each week.
Homework: Creative homework will be sent home each term, this will
give the children the opportunity to work on topic related activities. Year
1 will send home homework booklets half termly.
English – In Phase 1
During this year in English the children will learn to use
language in imaginative ways and express their ideas
and feelings when writing and speaking. They will be
encouraged to become fluent and expressive in their
reading and to build their confidence to read aloud and
answer questions. They will also develop their punctua-
tion and handwriting skills and will apply these to imagi-
native and factual pieces of work.
Maths – In Phase 1
The children will learn to count, read and write numbers to
100 and beyond. They will learn a range of different calcu-
lation skills and will become confident when applying them to real life sit-
uations. The children will learn about shape, space and measure and will
have the opportunity to explore them practically within the school envi-
ronment. Throughout the year they will develop their mathematical lan-
guage.
Lunches
Children have 3 options for lunchtime. They can go home for
lunch, bring a packed lunch or have a school dinner. A copy
of the school dinner menu is available on the school website. You can apply
for free school meals via the link http://www.hull.gov.uk/education-and-
schools/schools/free-school-meals. Alternativly, you can collect a form from
the school office

Your child will do PE twice a week. They will need a named PE kit - a plain
red T shirt, black shorts and sandshoes for indoor PE and a tracksuit and
trainers for outside sessions. PE kits should be kept in a bag with your child’s
name on, so they can be safely stored on their peg in the cloakroom. Long
