The purpose of this PowerPoint is to introduce important geographical and historical landmarks in America to my students.

Students will learn different geographical and the history of land marks in America and they will be able to identify them at the end of this lesson.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS IN AMERICA

There have been many battles, speeches, and many famous people who are very important parts in the history of

America. There is nothing that can bring the history of America to life like the places where our history actually took

place. There are geographical locations in America’s landscape and there are landmarks throughout America that

are very unique. Visiting these geographical locations and landmarks will give us a different and fun way to learn more

about these landmarks and their history.

We will start our tour on the East Coast moving to the West Coast. Let’s get started on our trip through America!

Acadia National Park

The Acadia National Park is located on Maine’s rocky coast. Some people feel that Acadia National Park is one of the most breathtaking places on the East coast. The

gorgeous vegetation and the beautiful ocean view make it a popular tourist attraction.

Statue of Liberty

Located on Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty is a copper statue that was given to the United States as a gift from France in 1886. This is the first site that immigrants would see as they sail into the harbors of New York. This statue represents freedom and liberty to so many people.

Jefferson Memorial

The Jefferson Memorial is located in Washington D.C. Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States and he was also the main author of the

Declaration of Independence.

Lincoln Memorial

Constructed starting in 1912, the Lincoln Memorial is located in Washington, D.C. It is a memorial that is dedicated to President Abraham Lincoln who was President during the Civil War. Lincoln is also known as the Great Emancipator. The Lincoln Memorial has been a place where many historical events took place such as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech.

Washington Monument

The George Washington Monument was built in Washington D.C. to honor our first President George Washington for the things that he did for this country.

He was the first President of the United States and he was very instrumental in the United States and the war that helped the U.S. to win their freedom from

Great Britain.

PAUL REVERE’S HOME

Paul Revere was an American engraver and silversmith and he was considered to be a patriot of the American Revolution. He is credited for alerting the Colonial Militia that the “British are coming”. Paul Revere’s home, is a

National Historic Landmark located in Boston, Massachusetts. This home is a museum that gives people who visit a look at how life was in colonial times.

Independence Hall

Independence Hall was originally built in 1732 as the home of the Pennsylvania Colonial Government. Independence Hall is where our government originated and it is the place where the Declaration of Independence was signed. It also hosted the Constitutional Convention.

Bunker Hill Monument

The Bunker Hill Monument is located outside of Boston Massachusetts, where one of the early battles of the American Revolution took place. The Bunker Hill Monument was erected to honor the memories of who fought on the Hill.

The Liberty Bell

The Liberty Bell is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was commissioned as a memorial for the Pennsylvania colony and the freedom that the citizens now had in America, their new home. It was originally located in the steeple of the Pennsylvania State House.

The White House is the home of the President of the United States. The White House is seen as a symbol of power for this country and it is one of the most visited sites in Washington D.C. The White House

Many years ago the pioneers who were traveling to the west saw St. Louis Missouri as the end point of civilization. The Gateway Memorial Arch was built for people to remember the many Americans who left everything that they had to

move to the West in search of starting a new life.

Old Faithful Geyser

The Old Faithful Geyser is located in Wyoming inside the Yellowstone National Park and is said by many to be the most beautiful place in the United States. Old Faithful shoots up a spray of water as if it is on a schedule, giving tourists

an unbelievable show.

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore is located in Rapid City, South Dakota. This memorial is a memorial to four of our country’s presidents, George Washington, Thomas

Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mount Rushmore was carved in 1925 by a father and

son who were sculptors.

Hoover Dam

The Hoover Dam is in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River on the border between Arizona and Nevada. The idea of the Hoover Dam was a plan that President Roosevelt used during the Great Depression to help our country recover. This project brought a different source of power. It also created hundreds of new jobs and it provided water that was needed in order to grow crops in this land.

GRAND CANYON

 The Grand Canyon is located in Arizona, it is probably one the most distinct geographical features in America. The vast ravine is located in the southwest part of America. The Grand Canyon covers 277 miles. Each year more than 5 million

people visit this amazing sight.

Independence Rock

Independence Rock is located in Wyoming. Independence Rock served as an important point in the late 1800’s as thousands of people traveled on the Oregon

Trail headed to the west coast. The goal of many settlers was to make it to Independence Rock by the 4th of July, this meant that they would make it to west

coast before w inter.

Everglades National Park

The Everglades National Park is located in Florida and it houses a very unique ecosystem found in this country. The Everglades are full of many swamp creatures such as alligators and crocodiles and it is open year round to visitors.
