Arena Laser Tag is option of challenging and fast-paced laser tag real time and physical space game. The characteristic feature is the venue - indoors, usually in the style of 'Star Wars'. In such environment the vest and blaster sensors are luminous at the game start and twinkle briefly being hit by beam of opponent's blaster.

Aim of the Game is to hit by blaster's beam the sensors which are attached on opponent's vest or weapon (the sensors may be attached on extra equipment as well). Player and its team are earned points for each successful action (hit the opponent, base, domination box, etc. capture). Depending on the settings, points are deducted for opponent's hit into the sensors of opposite team player, respawn, unsuccessful shot, etc. Game stats are sent promptly to host PC and may be displayed on monitor, projector or TV screen.

Arena laser tag standard kit consists of blaster&vest sets, battery chargers and the router.

1. Blaster

Blaster is a "space" weapon simulator "hitting" the opponent by harmless IR-beams with signal carrier frequency of 56 kHz and wave length of 940 nm.

IR-diodes TSAL6100 (by Vishay) are used in the function of emitters.

During the shot, IR-beam is duplicated by light beam (in the mould of laser pointer) for gaming realism.

The unique feature of this blaster model is that it is made of semitransparent ABS-plastic in white or grey.

Each blaster is equipped with 8 (4 on each side) hit and stand-in sensors built into the case enabling the opponent to hit the player not only to the vest, but to its weapon as well. RGB LEDs blinking on these sensors and sound speaker inform the player that it has been hit.

With reference to a specific character of Arena laser tag game, the blaster is equipped with rubber nuzzle which reduces the risk of getting injured at players' close contact as well as capacitive hand sensor keeping out the player to shoot around the corner, atop the cover or holding the weapon stiff-armed.

Player's game stats (health, ammunition, hits, opponent's damage and efficiency) are displayed on the LCD screen.

2. Vest The vest is an integral part of the kit for arena laser tag, and it is connected with the

blaster by special cable.

There are 7 hit and stand-in sensors on the vest (4 in front and 3 from backside) which cases are made of durable polycarbonate. The sensors are equipped with vibro-light indication and activated independently allowing to record differentiated damage to the player by zones. There are three zones on the vest: abdomen, shoulders (front and back) and dorsum. Blaster is the fourth zone.

Vest textile base is made of durable and wear-resistant material (cordura). Two sliding straps placed on each side enable to gauge up the vest according to the body constitution of the majority of players.

Kit power supply is conducted using 2 Li-ion batteries (7.4 V, total capacitance 4800 mAh) located in the control unit of the vest.

5. Domination box Domination box (DB) is one of the elements of the Arena laser tag extra equipment. The

box allows conducting interesting scenarios with its capture and holding in different combinations both by the quantity of boxes themselves (up to 4) and with other extra equipment (tripwire mines, electronic bombs, utility boxes, medic boxes, etc.).

The device operates on the principal of chess clock and is "captured" by a shot from the blaster directed by the emitter vertically against the surface where DB is placed on, as if inside of the box.

The purpose of domination box is to fix the "capture" by players of the various teams, sum up the overall time of capture by each team and decide the winner.

Fig.8 Key elements of Domination box

Power supply is conducted by internal Li-ion battery of 7.4 V.

Data communication, control and setting of the Domination box is performed through the Wi-Fi channel using Arena software which should be installed on server computer.

Damage and capture period are set in tab “Domination box setting” of Arena software (p.24).

Upon initial switch of Domination box by button ,its LEDs light white.

Depending on the settings, the Domination box responds to the shot from the blaster in different ways.

If damage parameters (number of shots) and time for capture of the Domination box are selected as equal to 0, its LEDs immediately light by the color of the team- captor (let it be "red"), and the team starts to earn the points (1 second = 1 point). Thus, the sound system connected to the server will reproduce the sound massage set for the box and such event (for example: "Domination box No.2 is captured by a red team!"). If the Domination box is entered by a player of another team (let it be "blue" team), scoring points for "red" team stops, and "blue" team start to be earned the points.

If damage and time for capture time are set as more than 0 (for example, damage is 12, and time is 45 s), after switching the Domination box (LED is white), the box starts twinkle smoothly by the color of the team of capturing the player in case of the first successful hit. For the complete capture of the box it should be "held" – in our case within 45 seconds – and hit it 12 times. When Domination box is considered to be captured, the LEDs will start continuously glow by the color of the capturing team, and the points scoring will start.

If the hitting during the holding period is stopped (the player was hit or he ran out of ammunition), the box will return to the initial condition in 30 s: it will glow by the color of the team that captured it before (the points are scored again), or by white color if it has not been captured before. The box is passed to the same condition if the player under the above-mentioned settings has not manage to hit the box 12 times within 45 sec.

If the box was captured by one team, and another team starts capturing it ("recapture"), the LEDs will start smoothly blinking by color of a new team which also has to hold the Domination box – to hit 12 times within 45 s (under the present setting). In such a case, the points are not earned to previous team, and new team will be added the points only after complete capture. The points for the capturing of the box in the course of the round are summed up for each team.

6. Utility box

Fig.9 Utility box

Power supply is conducted using internal Li-ion rechargeable battery of 7.4 V.

In case of line-of-sight coverage the range of action is 5-7 meters.

Setting and control is performed through Wi-Fi channel from Lasertag_Arena software [tab "New game/Base capture/Utility box/Settings" (p.25)]. Radiating infrared rays' capacity can be configured on tab with the scrollbox. The maximum area radius where the UB impacts on near-by players actually depends on this parameter. Here, it is possible to set the maximum amount of box "health" (1-254), i.e. how many it should be hit by blaster’s ray to disable.

The modes ("Respawn", "Radiation", "Anomaly" and "Random") of the Utility box may also be set on the tab. The activity interval is set in the corresponding sections for each of the modes (how often does the box sends by IR channel the command in accordance with the mode selected), as well as the period of inactivity (how long does the box remain inactive after its deactivation). The value of each above-mentioned parameter can be set within the range from 1 to 65534.

Box impact is also possible to set either for only one team or for all teams.

In such a case, the possibility of the box deactivation will change: if Utility box light white, a player of any team may deactivate it. And if the color is different, it can be hit only by the player of the team which color does not coincide with one set on the box (if the Utility box is in the "Respawn" or "Abnormality" mode), or vice versa, in "Radiation" mode, the player of the team which color coincides with the color of Utility box LED light.

When switching on the Utility box, LED on the upper cover of the device lights by three colors play prior the connecting to the server. Upon connection, the indicator starts glowing by the color of the last setting (red, blue, green, yellow). The color indicates a command which the box impacts upon. White is for all.

Then, after the game start, the box operates in off-line mode periodically initiating through the IR-channel impulses effecting on the game kits of the players in accordance with settings.

In "Respawn" mode the player recovers all the "health"; in the "Anomaly" and "Radiation" mode - the number of units is either increased or decreased depending on the set parameters of made damage.

It is possible to control the condition and operation mode of the Utility box by means of Arena software (Game Devices Status Panel/"Utility box" tab)

By means of the same software the box parameters settings are performed (Game Settings/Scenario "Base capture" tab/Utility Box/UB Settings) (p.25).

9.2.1. Scenario selection and editing

First of all one shall select game scenario. Five different scenarios are available in this program version: "Death match", "Team game", "Domination box capture", "Base capture" and "Vampire".

Each of them is possible to edit. To do this it is required to open a corresponding tab with the scenario name and press icon .

Opened window allows to set all kits participated in the game under this scenario simultaneously. It is possible to modify 17 parameters:

Quantity of cartridge clips (1-254 pcs)

Rapidity of fire (1-999 shots per min)

Number of ammunition in a cartridge clip (1-254 pcs)

Damage applied per one shot (1-100 units)

Unlimited cartridge clips (yes/no)

Number of shots in burst (1-254) Possibility to switch fire mode in blaster pressing reload button for 10 sec

Duration of shock – standby unattended time of player's blaster after it has been hit (1-254 s).

Damage to shoulders/dorsum/body/blaster – coefficient to be multiplied to opponent's weapon damage if beam gets into different zone of the vest and blaster (1-100). So, if weapon damage is set to, as on Fig. 23, when hitting back 15 health units are taken away from the player, when hitting to blaster – 5.

Auto respawn - time needed to restore all health units after the player has been "killed" (0-254 s, 0 – off.)

Power of blaster IR beam is set out depending on a premise and obstacles, which are reflected in shooting and ricochet burst distance (1-100%).

Fig.23 Game kits' parameters setting

The scenarios essentially differ in the following:

In the scenarios "Death match" and "Vampire" the players may hit each other regardless of the kit color.

In the scenarios "Team game", "Domination box capture" and "Base capture" so-called "friendly shooting" is switched off - the player of one team do not hit each other.

Scenario "Vampire" differs by the following: if player hits the opponent, he not just takes the health units from the aftermost, but adds also it to himself.

Damage calculation if blaster beam

hits with damage of 5 units into the

zone of player's dorsum with initial

value 100 health units:

100 – (5 3) = 85

9.2.3. Parameter Settings of Utility box

It is necessary to select utility boxes participating in the game in the tab "Base capture"

and click icon .

Fig.25 Utility boxes settings

Navigating the scrollbox, opened window allows to set emissive power of infrared diodes(i.e. impact range as to players) immediately for all UB.

Modes of Utility boxes are also set up on the tab – selecting required boxes it is possible to choose mode "Respawn", "Radiation", "Anomaly" or "Random" for each of them. Setting for each mode may be modified:

number of "health" points (1-254);

impact (respawn or hit) on all or individual teams; damage deactivation - player's weapon damage is multiplied by a coefficient when beam hits into the Utility box (1-254);

activity interval - frequency of teams extradition by IR channel (1-254 s);

inactivity interval - standby unattended time of a point after deactivation (1-254 s);

damage applied (only in modes "Radiation" and "Random") (1-254).

Back to table of contents

LaserPro Equipment for Arena Laser Tag User Manual

26

Fig.26 Selection of Utility box mode and features

Deactivation degree of Utility box depends on 3 indexes: number of health points, damage to point deactivation and damage to weapon. Thus, if 100 heaths are set in a point, deactivation level is 5, and blaster damage - 5, so each shot will take 25 units from the point and 4 shots will be enough for its deactivation.

When setting impact only by the point per one team, point deactivation capacity will change - if UB lights by white color, player of any team may deactivate the point. In case of another color - it can be hit only by a player of the team not coinciding by color set in the point. Algorithm of impact on teams of different color and their deactivation are presented in Chapter 6 of this manual (p.10).

10. Safety Precautions

The elements of laser tag equipment kit supplied by LaserPro Company are high-end technology requiring safe and careful handling.

Keep devices away from humidity. If, still it happened, – switch on the equipment quickly and dry it within 4-5 hours at room temperature.

Keep equipment cases made of plastic (blaster, vest sensors) out of undue mechanical stresses. If equipment has been in conditions under refrigeration – being used in heated premises, keep it in warm not less than 2 hours before switching on in order to avoid electronic units damage due to condensate.

Equipment for Arena laser tag has in-built battery, thus, one must observe the safety rules when working with Li-ion batteries.

Li-ion batteries used in our equipment have a number of advantages in comparison with traditional batteries. They are light in weight, with long service lifetime and have large specific capacity per unit mass and volume. When stored and in service the batteries do not contaminate the environment, they comply with all worldwide Ecology standards.

However, Li-ion batteries also have disadvantages. Sensitivity to overcharging and overdischarging is one of the principal problems. Overcharging is usually accompanied by increased heating and bloating of battery body and, as a sequence, its irreversible functional loss. Thereto, deep discharge of device causes the same result. In order to prevent negative effects, each battery, supplied by our Company, is equipped with internal safe circuit against overcharge and deep discharge as well as against excess of permissible temperature (above +90 °С).

Nevertheless, serious attention shall be paid to safe handling of Li-ion batteries.

Do not use batteries at high temperatures (for example, under conditions of direct sunlight impact, proximity from the heat source or open fire) – in case of overheating gas pressure inside the battery rises and it may cause explosion or to its service life decrease as a minimum. When battery cools at temperature below 0°С, its power losses up to 40-50 %. Maximum acceptable temperatures to use Li-ion batteries are –40°C to +50°C.

Do not use batteries under conditions of static electricity - protection devices may go wrong and problems will arise in safe use of a battery.

Do not compress, throw and expose battery to mechanical effects.

Do not short circuit positive and negative battery leads by metallic object or wires.

When connecting several Li-on batteries use accumulators of one manufacturer - one rating, in one and the same technical state.

Do not use batteries without electronic safe circuit. Do not change polarity of battery leads location.

Do not connect batteries to devices not intended for power supply from it.

It is prohibited to operate bloated batteries - they require mandatory replacement.

Do not dismantle battery and do not pin it by sharp objects - it may become depressurized and be leaky, overheat and flame out.

Do not submerse battery, throw to fire - it may explode. Do not solder battery directly to board.

LaserPro Equipment for Arena Laser Tag User Manual

47

Do not take battery to minimal charge. Often recharging is more preferable - it does not harm the battery.

Batteries charging.

Use ventilated and fireproof room to charge the batteries. In case of possible inflammation of batteries, they shall not cause fire in the entire premise.

Burning Li-on batteries are impossible to water-quench (hydrogen is formed) and carbon dioxide extinguishers (lithium enters into reaction with carbon dioxide). Dry sand, cooking salt, baking soda are possible to apply as well as to cover the burning battery by thick heat-resistant fabric. Thus, it is recommended to keep sand nearby the place of battering charging.

Never try to charge non-chargeable Li-on batteries! Attempt to charge these devices may cause explosion and inflammation, which spread toxic agents.

In case of battery damage do not recharge it! Use only those charging devices intended for this type of the batteries.

Temperature mode of Li-ion batteries charge affects their capacity being reduced during charging process in the cold or heat. The charge may be performed under the environmental temperature in the range of +4°С to + 40°С, however, optimum charging temperature is +24°С.

Before using charging device check connection accuracy and quality of all leads. In case of some charging device leads damage they shall be replaced prior to devise utilization.

Fix equipment on the flat, firm, non-combustible surface when charging. Remove highly inflammable objects located nearby.

If charging equipment having in-built battery one must observe the electrical safety precautions.

It is not advisable to keep charging device in the mains socket, if it is not used at the moment as intended.

When powering device off, pull it out of the socket holding the plug and not the electric

cord.

Do not ever leave equipment unattended in the charging process! If when charging the battery peculiar scent, heat, smoke evolve indicating a case deformation, one should disconnect the charging device from the mains, and battery - from charging device.

Charging cycle of fully charged batteries of blaster&vest kit is 5-6 hours. Full charge reaches when voltage comes to peak value, and charging rate decreases up to 0.1 … 0.07 A depending on battery model.

If compartment swells during charging, do not ever pin elements, especially if it is still hot. It should be placed to salt water and wait until this element cools down. Upon cooling carefully pin the outer shell and then put the compartment back to salt water. After that procedure battery is subject to utilization.

In a contingency case lithium compartments may get out of order being short circuit inside. Thus, the element itself may look unimpaired in outward appearance. In any case the batter should be better taken and observed attentively in the course of 20 minutes.

In case of battery depressurization and electrolyte contact with skin of hands or eyes, rinse immediately affected place by running water within 15 minutes and see a doctor. Otherwise, it may cause chemical burn, partial or full loss of sight.

Batteries storage and their utilization

LaserPro Equipment for Arena Laser Tag User Manual

48

Li-on batteries are not subject to long-term storage and are intended for active regular operation. From the moment of production their service life period is 2-3 years not depending on operation rate.

If there is necessity to store unused batteries as intended for more than 1 month, they have to be charged approximately up to 50%. Long storage in discharged state may cause battery total failure.

Store at temperature +5°С... +20°С (preferably +5°С), out of direct sunlight.

Do not store batteries in the premises with high temperature or in the premises with high humidity.

Do not store batteries with metallic objects such as clips, pins, etc.

Battery protection circuits have low own consumption, nevertheless, it is sufficient to decrease the battery voltage up to 2.5 V. Thus, if battery is not used in a cycling mode, it should be recharged periodically (approximately once in 6 months).

If during battery storage you notice its powerful heating, hissing of outgoing gas, appearance of harsh white smoke, remove it promptly to a place safe for people. If one of batteries spills electrolyte, avoid its contact with skin, air the room and utilize the battery.

Lithium contained in Li-ion batteries melts and boils under relatively low temperature. If water gets inside, reaction with hydrogen evolution occurs. Correspondingly, such a battery is potentially dangerously explosive on long uncontrolled storage and may cause environmental damage.

For the avoidance of undesired effects used elements are subject to collection and delivery to specialized receiving points. Moreover, they shall be packed in a way to avoid electric contact with container or other battery. Pack leaking elements to localize the leakage. When it happens, use protective means: gloves, protective glasses, appropriate working cloths, respirator, and barrier plastic bags.

Do not throw Li-ion batteries to waste bins!
