ZEISS EyeMag Smart

STRATOR One loupe spectacles

Minimally invasive therapies are gaining

increasing importance in the dental practice.

The EyeMag® Smart medical loupes from

Carl Zeiss are now available with a sports

frame featuring special laser safety lenses

and eyepiece protection. Thanks to their

outstanding optical properties, EyeMag Smart

medical loupes support laser therapy with

2.5x magnifi cation for a good overview of

the treatment area and make even the fi nest

detail visible. Bright fi lters ensure good color

vision, therefore allowing laser procedures on

the patient to be performed with maximum

precision and safety.

EyeMag Smart with laser protection offers

not only an attractive design, but also optimal

eye protection: the eyeglass lenses protect the

user against wavelengths of diode lasers in

the range 805-1030 nm and of Nd:YAG lasers

in the range 1030-1064 nm. The combination

of the laser safety frame with eyepiece

protection meets the requirements on laser

safety stipulated by European standard EN 207.

The curved shape of the lenses additionally

protects the eyes against lateral incidence of

the laser radiation.

If no laser protection is required, the sports

frame with laser protection can be exchanged

at any time for a transparent frame from the

Smart line. EyeMag Smart with laser protection

has been approved as a medical device as per

93/42 EEC.

EyeMag Smart loupes with sports frame and

laser protection are available in fi ve different

versions with working distances of 300-550

mm and therefore allow the selection of the

right loupes for the respective requirement.

Outstanding wearing comfort is provided by

soft nose pads and a headband. EyeMag Smart

can be adapted quickly and intuitively to each

individual treatment situation.

IR viewers

Infrared viewers allow the visibility of IR-

radiation up to 2000 nm. They are ideal for

alignment of IR-lasers (e.g. Ti:Sa, Nd:YAG, Dye

lasers and IR laser diodes). With IR viewers

one can recognize -different to IR detector

cards- also low level scattered light.

IR viewers are handy tools for e.g. laser safety

offi cers to check the security of laser cabins or

the technician who wants to aligne the path

of the laser beam. With these hand-held IR

viewers it will be possible to make invisible

infrared laser radiation visible.

Various models of two different series are

available:

The models of SM-3R series have a mini-

aturized high-performance infrared image

converter. The spectral sensitivity in the near

IR-range extends up to 2 µm. The SM3R is

a lightweight and compact device. Thus it

allows also facemask mounting for hands-free

operation (option). The SM-3R comes with

hand-held, IR-fi lter, pinholeattenuator, batte-

ries and soft case.

The models of ABRIS series are an excellent

choice for most industrial and R&D applica-

tions. The S1-converter tube together with a

high-quality objective offers a image resolu-

tion of 60 lines/mm. The spectral sensitivity

range is 1300nm for standard model, 1700nm

and 2000nm for selected versions. Both mo-

dels include hand-held, IR-fi lter, pinhole-at-

tenuator, batterie and soft case.

Active laser safety window

Application: Alexandrite, Ti:Sa, Diodes, Disc,

Nd:YAG, fi bre

The windows are made of a laminated glass

and include both passive and active protection.

In case radiation occur on the window, critical

changes are detected and effect a safe

shutdown of the laser source before unduly

radiation above the Accessible Emission Limits

(AEL) may harm the user. The permanent

monitoring of the activation cycle prevents a

restart after irradiation and possibly damage

to the protective window. Thus, even a safe

operation in automatic operation of the laser

is possible without a constantly supervising by

the user.

Active protective function:

The active protection windows are suitable

for lasers with powers in the multi-kW range.

The precise dimensioning is based on the laser

power, power density in the case of failure and

the shut-off time of the laser safety circuit

(e.g. laser radiation with 1 kW, beam diameter

5 mm, corresponding to a peak power density

of 7.6 kW / cm², gives a typical delay for the

laser shut-off time of 50 ms. The peak power

density was calculated by a factor of 1.5 from

the average power density.

Laser protection regulations Laser protection regulations

Classifi cation of lasers according to DIN EN 60825-1

According to the biological effect of laser radiation lasers are divided into laser classes.

Important for a laser class is the defi nition of the maximum permissible exposure (MPE). The MPE is characterizing the level just no damage is to expect.

Since 2004 there are 7 laser classes according to DIN EN 60825-1. The higher the number of laser class the higher the danger of the laser.

EN 60825 - Laser classes

Laser class Concept Remark

1 The emitted laser radiation is not dangerous Protective equipment is not required

1M Eye safe without use of optical instruments; otherwise the eye could be endangered

Protective equipment is not required as long as no optical instru-ments are used

2 Eye safe by defense reaction Protective equipment is not required

2M Laser light could hit the eye is corresponding class 2 – depending on if beam is divergent or expanded; by using optical instruments the eye could be endangered

Protective equipment is not required as long as no optical instru-ments are used

3R The laser radiation is exceeding the MPE values; the radiation is corresponding 5x MPE of class 1 (invisible) or 5x MPE of class 2 (visible) The risk in comparison to class 3B is only slightly attenuated.

Laser safety eyewear is recommended

3B View into the laser is dangerous. Diffuse refl ections are treated as not dangerous.

Laser safety eyewear is required

4 Even diffuse refl ected laser radiation is dangerous; there is danger for skin too as well as fi re hazard

Laser protective equipment is required (laser safety eyewear, laser shields and so on)

Spectral measurement

Inspection and repair

We offer spectral measurements of your speciment. By using our spectral photometer Cary 6000i

we can measure OD (optical density) and VLT (visible light transmission) of your material in the

range from 190-1800nm upto OD 8+ without the necessity of grinding down the material.

We supply a complete documentation with curves and scans.

Please ask for a corresponding quotation.

Your eyewear does not look brandnew anymore over the years of use? You want to be sure, that

your eyewear is still safe and you can use it without any risk?

A periodic inspection for possible safety-relevant defects is recommended, in particular the eye-

wear is used in a roughly environment. Specially when your eyewear shows scratches or other

mechanical damages on the glass or polycarbonate fi lters, which can be detected with the naked

eye already, we strongly recommend an inspection. Mechanical damages on the fi lters may lead

to total or partial loss of the laser protection or to harmful scattered light.

We offer a professional inspection of the function of your eyewear and possible cosmetical and

safety-relevant damages. A complete cleaning of the fi lter and frame is included. For the inspec-

tion we have to charge 38,00 € net.

Generally the inspection is made within one week. You will receive a detailed inspection report,

respectively our quotation for the cost of necessary repair.

We also inspect laser safety eyewear which you have not bought from us originally.

Due to liability reasons we can make necessary repairs for our own products, only. The inspection

fee of 38,00 € is not applicable in case you place an order for repair.

Safety informationLegal regulations require that all personnel working in areas where there is a risk of exposure to

hazardous laser radiation should wear appropriate eye protection. Hazards may also arise because

of accidental refl ection of laser radiation, e.g. by refl ection from refl ective parts (including eye

protectors), tilting or maladjustment of optical components.

1. Before use, please check that the laser safety glasses that you are going to wear is suitable for

this very laser. Please carefully compare wavelength, laser working mode and scale number.

2. Before use, please check your laser safety glasses for possible damages. Damaged laser safety

glasses, fi lters which have undergone a colour change or glasses that were hit by a laser should

not be used any more and have to be replaced. With coated fi lters, the protection may be impaired

by even tiny scratches. Do not use eyewear with missing marking or where the marking is not

readable.

3. Laser safety glasses can be equipped with tinted fi lter glasses and can alter the colour vision.

Please check if the recognition of panel lights, warning lights or warning signals is impaired.

4. Tinted fi lter glasses can reduce the visible light transmission (VLT). If there is a visible light

transmission of less than 20%, it is recommended to increase the intensity of illumination at the

workplace. An additional source of illumination may be required.

5. Please never look directly into the beam - not even with laser safety glasses / laser alignment

glasses.

6. Laser safety glasses are only intended to give protection against accidental laser radiation. Both

limiting value and the stability tests are based on a maximum period of 5 seconds. Using laser

safety glasses for other purposes is not allowed. Laser safety glasses are no sun glasses and they

are not suitable to be worn in road traffi c.

7. The limiting values as specifi ed in EN 207/208 have been simplifi ed on the safeside compared

with the limiting values in EN 60825-1:1994. If you wish to use the EN 60825-1:1994 values,

please carry out a special test to see whether the stability of the laser safety glasses against laser

radiation is adequate for the specifi ed application.

What does the scale number include?EN 207 - e.g. „1064 D LB8“

The scale numbers LB1 to LB10 defi ne the power/energy density the laser safety glasses withstand

a direct hit of the laser beamfor at least 5 seconds and/or 50 pulses. The limiting values are layed

down in the standard EN 207. The scale number is useful only in combination with the wavelength

range and the mode of the laser (D, I, R or M). The standard EN 207 includes instructions how to

calculate the scale number and other general information.

EN 208 - e.g. „633 RB1“

The scale number RB1 up to RB5 defi ne the limiting power value of the laser for aligning purposes

and is valid only for the soecifi ed wavelength. The limiting values are layed down in the standard

EN 208.

Calculation program proTECT

for calculation of laser safety levels

according to the norms

To determine the ideal laser safety eyewear it is required to calculate the necessary protection

levels according to the standards. We offer our free calculation program proTECT to calculate

these protection levels. On entering the laser parameters the program calculates the necessary

protection levels and suggests the most suitable laser safety eyewear from our portfolio. The

program is available against registration.
