LEADERSHIP LEARNING FOR LASALLE COLLEGE STUDENTS
Four of our Year 11 students a ended the Sydney
Archdiocesan Student Leadership Forum on 12
October, 2016.
Held at St Mary’s Cathedral College, the students
– Anthony Eltarraf, Steven Hoang, Charbel
Naoum & Anthony Chadrawy ‐ joined with 150
other young leaders from Catholic Secondary
Colleges across the Sydney Archdiocese.
An ini a ve of the Archbishop of Sydney, Anthony
Fisher, the purpose of the forum was to gather the
young leaders together to meet with their peers, share ideas, be challenged and learn before they
embark on their year of leadership in 2017. The Archbishop addressed the forum saying:
“Appreciate the wisdom of the world about leadership but also the Chris an perspec ve that
includes sacrifice and doing the hard thing.
“Stand up for the right thing – the moral thing – not just for the most popular thing. Be bridge
builders between official leaders – the principal, teachers and students – and between different
year groups, the sporty types, artsy ones and the not so popular ones.
“Be realis c about your opportuni es and challenges and realise that you can’t do it all and you
need support.”
CANONIZATION OF SOLOMON LA CLERQ, A DE LA SALLE BROTHER
In a ceremony held in St Peter's Square in Rome on Sunday, 16th
October 2016, Pope Francis canonised the martyred 18th century French
De La Salle Brother, Solomon Le Clercq.
Saint Solomon is a great role model for all Lasallians, with a deep
devo on to teaching children and teenagers and a natural leader
who provided strong spiritual advice and guidance to fellow
De La Salle Brothers.
Many Lasallian Colleges across our District have inter‐school
houses named in honour of Blessed Solomon who worked
for several years as a teacher in schools throughout France in the 18th century.

FROM OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: MS LEONIE DOWD
A warm welcome back to Term 4. It is hard to believe we are now in the final term of the school year and I sincerely hope you all had
a res ul break and spent quality me together with family and friends. With the beau ful spring weather the students have
definitely returned making a posi ve start to the term and have demonstrated that they are ready to be focused on their learning.
One of the unique characteris cs of our school is the strong faith of our
students, parents and staff. LaSalle is an authen c Catholic school both in
our teaching of faith and in our values.
At LaSalle, Jesus is central to our lives and as such we celebrate our faith
on a daily basis in a variety of ways, through prayer, liturgical
celebra ons, Parish/School Masses, Lasallian Youth Ministry, outreach
programs and by displaying Chris an values through our daily interac ons
with others.
The College Religious Educa on Program builds on the strong faith
development that begins at home. Together the parents and staff provide
a strong, focused program that teaches the students about our Catholic scriptures, doctrine and values.
The presence of Jesus in our lives is evident at LaSalle and the recent Faith Celebra on event at the
Year 12 Gradua on Assembly Liturgy and the Evening Mass brought the school and parish community
together to celebrate our faith in song and prayer. Celebra ng our Catholic Faith will always be a
priority at LaSalle.
There are many events that will take place this term: The recent Year 11 Retreat celebrated in Week 1
was highly successful. S ll to come: Year 7, 2017 Informa on Evening and Transi on Days, Year 11,
2017 Informa on Evening, Remembrance Day Assembly, Awards Day Assembly, College Christmas
Mass, Year group picnic days to celebrate the sharing of another year together, just to name a few.
Parents, Carers and family members are welcome to join us at all our events.
Finally, a reminder that students are to wear the College summer uniform for Term 4. All details can be
found in the Student Planner. However, for male students this includes a black leather belt. For females
in Year 7 it is the College summer tunic or the kilt and white blouse.
Please ensure that all uniform items are labelled with the student’s first and last name and
College House.
I hope that you all enjoy the following days of Term 4. God bless,
Leonie Dowd

CANONIZATION OF SOLOMON LA CLERQ. A DE LA SALLE BROTHER (cont’d)
Lasallians around the world were preparing for the historic celebra ons to mark the canonisa on of the
martyred French De La Salle Brother, Solomon Le Clerq.
Br Solomon had a deep devo on to teaching children and teenagers and remarkably instructed a class of
130 students a er only one year of training at the novi ate.
Brother Solomon provided strong spiritual advice and guidance to fellow De La Salle Brothers, while
seeing firsthand the poli cal turmoil, tearing France apart in the lead up to the 1789 Revolu on.
A er the overthrow of the monarchy during the French Revolu on in 1790, the
Church became the next target. St Solomon had been living in secrecy alone in
Paris working as the secretary to Brother Agathon. Many of the le ers he
wrote to his family from this me have been saved. He was arrested in 1792
and martyred a month later by sword.
St Solomon was one of the first Lasallian Brothers to die for his faith. Similar to
our founder St John Bap st De La Salle, he also gave up a life of privilege to
serve others.
OCTOBER ‐ THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY
The Month of October is dedicated to the Holy
Rosary.
Praying the Rosary is one of the ways that we can
honour Mary, the Mother of our Lord.
The Rosary has been prayer by Catholics for
hundreds of years. According to an account
wri en in the 15th century, Mary appeared to St
Dominic in 1206 and gave him the Rosary, telling
him to preach it to others.
I encourage you to spend some me this month
praying the Rosary.
The St Felix Youth Group have Rosary Night every
Wednesday at 8:30pm at the Gro o.

LEADER OF PASTORAL CARE: MS JIZELLA AKKARI
CANTERBURY BANKSTOWN YOUTH AWARDS
Last term Canterbury Bankstown Council called for nomina ons from organisa ons to enter young people in the Canterbury
Bankstown Youth Awards. This was to celebrate the achievements of young people in the area. The awards were open to all young
people aged 12 – 18 who live, work or study in the city of Canterbury Bankstown.
The College sent in a number of student nomina ons that were for various categories. The categories included academic
achievement, community involvement, crea ve and performing arts, inspira on, leadership and spor ng.
We had many fine young ladies and men that were nominated for these categories.
We were very pleased that we had two young men, Vincent Gabut (Year 12) and Issa Albaba
(Year 10) make the finals and they and their families were invited to a end an Award Ceremony
on the 22nd September at the Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre. They were among 5
finalists in each category. They also received a $50 cash prize for being selected as a finalist.
Vincent Gabut was noted for his achievements in the leadership category. Vincent is the College
Captain for the 2016 Academic year. He also spent much of his January holiday break this year
helping disadvantaged communi es in Thailand. He helped rebuild parts of communi es and
helped children in these communi es with their schooling and interac on with others.
Issa Albaba was noted for his achievements in the inspira on category. Issa came to Australia
three years ago as a refugee from Syria with no English and had been trauma sed by his
experiences. In a few years he has managed to learn English and achieve in his studies, as well as,
assist at school in any way he can.
Unfortunately, neither Vincent nor Issa were selected as the winner for their category but they were well received and joined the
other four finalists in each of their categories in a presenta on and acknowledgement of their achievement at the Awards night.
Both students were awarded a finalist cer ficate and a $50 cash prize. We are pleased that these two fine young men made it to
the finals and we commend them on their achievements.
YEAR 10 ACV CHRONOLOGY ACTIVITY:
Mrs Kingham developed an interac ve group ac vity for Year 10 ACV which allowed
students to further develop their understanding of key events in the lead up to the
Vietnam War.
The class was split into groups and each group was given an envelope that included a
number of events, dates, images and maps.
Students were then given the task of matching them together and placing them in
chronological order.
This was a very effec ve tool in introducing and/or revising important content
knowledge and students thoroughly enjoyed the ac vity as they were able to
collaborate with their peers and gained a deeper knowledge of the topic.
Well done to Kiefe Ha, Nathan Galvin Valencia, Tejaswin Gupta and Kevin Tran from 10
Solomon who were the first in the class to complete the ac vity in the correct order!

LITERACY AND NUMERACY OLYMPICS
Last term the Literacy and Numeracy Olympics was held in the LaSalle Learning Centre. Twenty‐four
students from Years 7‐11 took part in a variety of events to test their wri ng or numeracy skills. This
event was held over two lunch mes.
The Literacy Olympic events included; lightning wri ng, precise and accurate handwri ng, descrip ve

level. The performance of the students in these events was outstanding.
The Numeracy Olympics events involved solving mathema cal problems and puzzles related to the 2016 Rio Olympics. Even
though the events were challenging, the students a empted all of them. It was fantas c to see LaSalle students prepared to
openly show their love of intellectual challenge and problem‐solving through the subject of mathema cs.
The winners of the Literacy Olympics were: Thomas Hinwood (Year 11), Dmytro Kucheryavyy (Year 10), Noah Luisi‐Juricic

YEAR 11 RETREAT
An important part of the Faith Development and Spiritual Forma on program
at the LaSalle Catholic College is the senior retreat experience. On Monday
10th to Wednesday 12th October, our Year 11 students ventured out to the
Stanwell Tops Conference Centre for their retreat. These three days were
filled with fun, laughter, reflec on and prayer.
The theme of our retreat was “Journey of Discovery”. The retreat ac vi es
incorporated this theme throughout the sessions, reflec ng on their journey
to date and on their future with hope. At this me of the year, the retreat is
an invaluable experience for our students to step back for a moment and
reflect on all their achievements as young men of LaSalle College. It is a me
to look towards the future and all the great things they wish to achieve. The
senior retreat was a challenging and memorable experience for all our
students.
I would like to especially thank Ms White, our College Religious Educa on
Coordinator, for all her hard work in organising the retreat and the amount of
energy, enthusiasm and guidance she displayed during our me away. I would
also like to especially thank Mr Egan our College Principal who travelled down
to the retreat to lead our young men in a number of sessions about being
strong young leaders.
I felt very honoured to have journeyed with them for the three days and also
feel privileged to have been a part of their faith development journey.
