VISITING ROTARIANS
David Laub, a member of the Rotary Club of Bellevue, Washinton, is visiting us
today. David is a former Las Vegan. One of his club’s pet projects is the “Family
Festival” which matches adoptive families. He is a repeat visitor to our club and
was accompanied today by his brother John and a guest, Tony Romo. David is
president of his club in the classification of “commercial fisheries”. David’s dad,
Bill Laub, was a member of our club at one time.
GUESTS
John Laub, the aforementioned David’s brother, is a Las Vegas resident and a
local entrepreneur who is president of WUND Healing BioPharmaceuticals, Inc.
He is also the president of the Las Vegas Medical Marijuana Association.
Tony Romo was a guest of the aforementioned John Laub and is vice president of
business development for the aforementioned WUND Healing
BioPharmaceuticals, Inc. Tony is also a repeat visitor to our club and is a retiree
from the Boy Scouts of America after 31 years of service.
2
Renee Schivo was introduced today by Fred Fukumoto. Renee is interested in becoming more involved in the community. She works at Berkshire-Hathaway,
previously having worked at MGM in event planning. She is George Togliatti’s
step daughter and was referred by George (a former member of our club) to
Joanne Blystone who suggested that she contact Fred. Renee joined us for our
Happy Feet project on 11/14.
ROTARY REGALIA
(Ignored once again by Pres. Karl.)
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Paul Gustilo announced that we have a lot of holiday events coming up:
1. Santa Clothes – Shopping for Children
Date: December 6th
Time: 7:00 am to approximately 10:00 am
Location: JC Penney, Galleria Mall
Club Support: We are providing $3,500 to provide clothes shopping for 35 children. Many of the children we are supporting are from Ruby Thomas who we have provided shoes for through our Happy Feet events. The Las Vegas Rotary club is leading this overall event and many other clubs, such as ourselves, are supporting the event.
Volunteer Opportunities:
We could use about 10-15 volunteers to help shop with children. Each volunteer would take a child around the store and shop for clothes ($100 budget).
2. Boys Town Nevada – Festival of Hope
Date: December 6th
Time: 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Location: Boys Town Nevada, 821 North Mojave Rd, Las Vegas
Club Support: We are supporting the event with a $1,600 sponsorship for cookies. Adrienne Cox will be Mrs. Claus passing out cookies to the children at the event. The event is a night of Christmas festivities for boys and girls that supported by Boys Town. Boys Town help families faced with challenges of addiction, abuse, abandonment, or violence.
Volunteer Opportunities:
There will be folks there that will help with the cookies so there isn’t much “hands-on” for us to help with. We would like at least a few other club members to be present for support.
3
3. Opportunity Village, Magical Forest
Date: December 10th
Time: 8:30 am – noon
Location: Opportunity Village, 6300 West Oakey Blvd, Las Vegas
Club Support: We are providing $5,000 to sponsor about 450 elementary school children to experience the Magical Forest. The Magical Forest is a Christmas themed area at Opportunity Village, that includes decorated Christmas trees, Santa Clause, a carousel, a train ride, and a slide.
Volunteer Opportunities:
We could use about 5-10 volunteers to help while the children we are sponsoring, visit the Magical Forest. Our roles would include train crossing guards, carousel support (helping kids get on the ride), and other functions.
4. Project 150
Date: December 19th
Time: 12 pm – 4 pm or 6 pm – 10 pm (support for entire period not required)
Location: Brady Caipa Volunteer Center & Betty’s Boutique, 3600 N. Rancho Drive, Las Vegas
Club Support: We are supporting the event with a $1,000 donation for food supplies for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for homeless teenagers. Project 150 is an organization that supports homeless teenagers in Las Vegas. The Green Valley Rotary Club has taken the lead to coordinate overall support from area Rotary clubs.
Volunteer Opportunities:
There is no specific number of volunteers that we need, but 3-4 volunteers for the day or night on December 19th would show support for the events. From 12 pm – 4 pm, volunteers will help set up and organize the food for assembly. From 6 pm – 10 pm volunteers will assemble the meals into individual boxes.
Eric Colvin announced that the Holiday Party will be on 12/13 as his house and that everyone should
be getting an “Evite” in the next day or two:
4
Rich Bowler invited everyone to the “Desert Chorale’s” annual Christmas concert at Ham Hall:
Eric Colvin announced the winners of the past two Sunday Night Football fundraising contests:
Week 11 winners:
Elaine Vinson $50
Scott Baranoff $100
Phyllis Magee $50
Jon DeVries $100
Week 12 Winners
Brad Middaugh $50
Jon Devries $100
Jon Devries $50
Gregg Townsend $100
GIFTS FOR THE PRESIDENT (Postcards, anyone?)
Keith Thomas (who just returned from a lengthy trip to Jordan, Israel, and Egypt) presented Pres.
Karl with an authentic Egyptian “shemagh” (head scarf) which Karl kindly wore long enough for Ted
Henderson to take a picture or two. Keith also gifted Pres. Karl with a postcard from every place he
visited (which he was apparently too cheap to mail). He also gave Pres. K. an authentic ½ shekel
coin from Israel.
RECOGNITIONS
5
Bruce Pope was recognized for sending postcards to the President (with real postage, according to
Bruce). No fine, apparently.
Tom Martin was recognized $50 for his grandson, Jon Gray, having his picture in the paper again,
along with a very nice story about Jon and his wife adopting a baby girl. .
JOKE OF THE DAY
Keith Thomas… A frog goes into Meadows Bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her
nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack.
"Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,000 loan to take a trip." Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks
his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it's okay, he
knows Eric Colvin, who is Meadows Bank’s star employee.
Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral. The frog says, "Sure. I have
this," and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed.
Very confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with Eric and disappears into a back office.
She finds Eric and says, "There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and
wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral." She holds up the tiny pink elephant.
"I mean, what in the world is this?"
Eric looks back at her and says..."It's a knickknack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man's
a Rolling Stone."
DRAWING
Bruce Pope was today’s winner.
SPEAKER
Bruce Pope presented a craft talk today. Bruce works for Rockland Manufacturing which started in
1948 in Wintergarden, Florida, and which today operates out of two locations, one in Pennsylvania
and one in Texas. See the attached presentation for more information about his company and what it
does. It was started by Sam Pratt who is 4 years older than Bruce so that makes him older than the
dirt that Rockland’s products are designed to scoop up. Seriously, Rockland is a customer-focused
company with 300 employees who stand behind the products they manufacture. Most have a
“lifetime” guarantee to the original purchaser. The company is innovative…Sam holds 185 patents in
his name alone and the company itself holds 3000 patents. The company also guarantee’s ship dates
and assesses itself a 5% penalty per day if it misses a ship date!
6
Great presentation today from a great Rotarian! Thanks, Bruce.
