Whisky Investigation.Washington, June 2. Atberton, be-

fore the Windom committee this morn-ing, said only two persons approachedhim on the whisky bill, both lawyers. One offered his services and tho otherasked if they were going to employ anyone neither claimed he could influencecongressmen.

Stogg, of St. Louis, testified that heknew no fund to bo used to influencelegislation. He declined to give thonames of the two attorneys who ap- -

Sroached him regarding the case, them offered to securo the

influenco of congressmenCol. Wharton, the Louisville attorney

for distillers, only knew of $75 spent bythe distillers, and this was for printing. No journal or correspondent evor ap-proached him, except to get news. Hadnever heard of any threats by any ofthem. I never presented a case in courtwith a cleaner head than this one. Ad-journed.

IIOUMO.

Washington, June 2. Immediatelyafter the reading of the journal, thehouse opened for tho consideration ofthe Alabama contested election case ofLowe vs. Wheeler.

Thompson, of Iowa, favored the con-testants claim, and denied that Wheel-er had not been fairly treated by thoelectors.

Mills, of Texas, spoke in advocacy ofthe right of the sitting member to re-tain his seat, and was followed byJones, of Texas, in favor of the contes-tant.

Atherton, of Oltfo, used the hour read-ing a minority report, and called atten-tion to the fact that but thrco republi-cans were paying it the slightest atten-tion, and criticised such inattention onthe part of the judges who were to de-cide the case. It had been chargedthat thei'o was an agreement betweencertain gentlemen on tho othor side, alluding to the greenbackers and therepublican party.

Jones, of Texas, I pronounce thecharge to be false.

Atherton Very well, I will show youthat the republican party itself chargesit. Ho then quoted from the Washing-ton Republican to tho eli'ect that green-backe- rs

had been steadfast to tho re-publicans in the recent election cases, and the latter were bound in honor tosee justice done... Lowe, and several republicans Thatis justice.

Atherton replied that soon it wouldbe found what justice means in the re-publican ranks. There are now notmore than twenty-si-x republicans luthe chamber, but when the matter cameto a vote 150 would come, without thoknowledge of anything about the case, and raise one and take the heads off ofthe sitting members.

Hoar, of Michigan, entered into ahironical eulogy upon the great intellect-ual energy and statesmanship shownby the democrats during Uc recent fili-bustering movement, lie characterizedRandall as the Napoleon ot the contest,Blackburn, its Marshal Ney, andSpringer as Joan of Arc, Laughter. He ridicules the courageous manner inwhich they came up to make a motionto adjourn. Tho lastnamed gentlemanhad not entered into the contest untilafter Waterloo, and Napoleon was onhis way to St. Helena,

Pending further discussion, Gannon,of Illinois, reported from the commit-tee on appropriation tho legislature, judicial and executive appropriationbills, which hare already been pub-lished, and it was referred to the com-mittO- Q

of the whole.Hiscock, from the same committee,

reported back the general deficiencybill, and it received a similar refer-ence.

Tho election caso then went over tillwhen the provious question

will bo called early in the gessioi). Adjourncd.

NOTHING NEW DEVELOPED.Pittsburg, June 2. Tho labor situa-

tion, as regards tho iron strike, has de-

veloped nothing new since noon to-da- y.

Tho mining troubles matters are alsodevoid of anything new. It is said thatwhile the iron lookout continues nomore colored miners will bo importedto take tho places of strikers, as therewill bo little need of them, theironmills having stopped consuming.

NO CHANGE IN THE SITUATION.South Chicago, June 2. Thero is no

material change in the situation atIrondale this morning. All tho menaro still out. President Jarrett has notarrived, and has telegraphed statingthat he will not come as expected.Corresponding Secretary Pat Carrac-dy-,

of the Iron Maker's Association here, just received tho following telngramfrom President Jarrett at Pittsburg :

"My instructions being only advisory, you are at liberty to stop providingthey all stop."

Mr. Carmody also received the fol-

"Do not work unless thoy sign thoscales. We aro out, and will stop outuntil they all sign. I will call themout."

The indication now arc that tho menwill stay out till the manufactures givein. The men claim they have hold of amillion dollars in the treasury at Pitts-burg; also that the steel and rail menWill come to their ajd with money whenthey need It. per cent.HAS TAKEN A FRIENDLY INTEREST.

The Knights of Labor have taken afriendly interest in the brick makers'strike, and propose a conference for acompromise and reconciliation. Theyrepresent the interests of tho strikers. The employers have given no answer, and are not much inclined to treat withthe men who havo been troublesomeand evasive.

DOCK LABORERS' ATTACK.

Tho attack of tho dock laborers atBridgport, last night, upon the Chicago& Alton train was well executed, andevinced careful planning. Thoroughlyarmed with sticks, olubs and nieces ofiron and stones, the number oi brokenand bruised heads attest their effectiveness,' inroo nan tneir skiuis laidbare by various blows, and a half dozenothers wero crippled or hurt in variousdegrees. None of tho injured are like-ly to die, even Judge Pillsbury beingin a fair way to recover. At last ac-counts the rioters quickly fled whentheir revenge was satisfied. Tho po-lice were early at the scene, juid bavcmade several arrests, dispatch fromDwight says, one of the rioters was ac-cidentally shot in the forohcad. Thewitesscs. of tho affair ave being lookedup. David M.- Williams,. ofDwight, wlio was with Judge Fdlsbury, says thoshot which struck him was lirod froman inside car, but none of the partysaw tho man . who fired it. It is believed, however, that important clowsare iu the hands of tho polico, and themiscreant will be brought to justice.

THEY HAVE ARRIVED

for New York, whero she expects tomak her future home. A little over a

ear ago Miss Alice Rotibins, that washer name then, arrived in Las Vegaswith the avowed intention of practic- -n g medicine. She was well learned in

the science of a practical phj'sician.as Vegas then was not tho city of to--

lay, but she looked the field over, sawa brilliant future, and trnsting in herown energy and ability she rented anoffice on the east side and commencedthe practice of medicine. Her excellent knowledge of medicine, untiringzeal and warm feeling for her patientssoon gained for her many warm andsubstantial friends. Soon after starting in business she married M. Sum- -

meriield, Esq., and it is his failinghealth that prompts her present actionin going east to tho sea shore, whore itis hoped his health will bo restoredMrs. Dr. Summerfield has worked unceasingly during the past year. Goingthrough all kinds of weather day andnight to attend tho wants and alleviate the sufferings of tho sick, and has built up a practice thatany physician should well foci proud ofand has nobly vindicated herself in establishing herself at this place. Theenlightened treatment, kind words andtender nursing of this esteemed ladyhas lifted many a suffering patientfrom an almost dying bed. Shehas made scores of warm friends inLas Vegas who regret to seo her go,but none more bitterly than she herselfregrets to go, and tho well wishes anda heartfelt God speed of an apprecia-tive people will follow her wherevershe may bo.

Tho Ulilto Oaks.E. W. Parker and Marshal Parker ar

rived from White Oaks yesterday af-

ternoon by wagon. They report everything satisfactory at the White Oaks. The new null will start up Wednesdayliext. When they came to put tho millup it was found that additional sup-

ports were needed for tho roastingpipe, and these wero sent for and re-

ceived. All is now being put in readi-

ness to commence grinding, Wednes-day. Mr. Parker showed us a specimenof the rock now being taken from a sixfoot vein in the South Homestake. ItIs a large rock literally seamed withgold, and Mr. Parker guarantees it is afair average specimen of the six footvein throughout its width." He say3 heis satisfied that they have twenty-fiv- e

tons of ore on the dump which will run$5,000 to the ton, saying nothing aboutthe low grade ore. Surveyors avo atthe Oaks in the interest of the TexasPacific, running a preliminary lino toEl Paso. Everything looks bright inthat section.

New Lumber Yard.Aniceto and Valerio Baca, of Upper

Las Vegas, have established a now lum-

ber yard at the junction of Court andTwelfth streets. Tho work of puttingthe lumber in the yard was commencedyesterday and at a very lively rate. Thosawmill which is to supply this yard is

located in the heavy pine forests in theneighborhood of Savólla. Lumber isone of the great resources of this city atpresent and tho more lumber yards established here tho better. The lumbermarket is not like others. It cannot booverstocked. Tho greater portion ofNew Mexico is without saw timber, ami the great majority of the lumberneeded in the country must necessarilycomo from this place. Las Vegas asthe meat, wool and lumber market ofthe territory need have no fears as totho future. In addition to these advantages she is the great sanitary resort ofthe west, and the seat of more manufacturing and wholesale houses thanany other city in the territory.

brand Opening.Charles Gentle will give a grand free

lunch at his dining hall on railroadavenue. He has greatly enlargedhis dining hall and added a bar, whichwill be opened to-da- y at 4 o'clock. Hewill set one of the finest lunches everspread in tire city As reading matterfor his bar tables lie will carry the Lon- -

tion Times,- - Dublin Journal and aWelch paper, besides a large numberof newspapers and periodicals of ourcounty and territory.

ItutineNM Jllock.Chas. Blanchard has commenced

clearing tho ground preparatory to thoerection of a new business houso. Thebuilding is to bo twenty-iiy- e feet frontby eighty-fiv- e feet deep and two storieshigh. It is to be composed of stoneand brick.

Academy Inhibition.Tho academy will give an exhibition

at Baca hall two weeks from next Tues-day. Tho school has been preparingfor some time, and will make it one ofthe finest affairs of the season.

A number of guests of tho Montezu-ma hotel, headed by Clark D. Frost, took a picnic excursion up tho Gallinascanyon yesterday. A basket dinnerwas indulged in fur refreshments. Agood wagon road should bo built alongthis canyon tor the benefit of excursionists. It is impossible for eastern peopío to gain an idea of tho scenery ofNew Mexico by going over the plains.Ihey must go into the depths of thocanyons to behold their beauty. Apracticable carriage road can bo builtalong the river for.a distance of twentymiles, at a trilling expenditure of money, and some of tho grandest sceneryin tho west would bo readied.

It may not be generally known thatsplendid pottery clay is found nearLas Vegas, and very superior potteryflower pots, vases, etc., aro being man-ufactured from it. This is a branch ofbusiness which should be encouraged,as through small industries great citiesaro sustained and supported.

. M. Ruudulph, accompanied by HugoGoldenburjr, went to Sunnysido yester-day. Mrs. Rundulph and children willchildren will remain somo days longerin tho city.
