COMPLICATIONS OF LARGE BREAST IMPLANTS



The use of large breast implants (600cc plus) can carry more risks

in the short and long term:



Loss of overlying breast tissue, volume which can lead to

more implant visibility



loss of size and rippling in the long term and is very difficult to

rectify if it were to occur



Changes in underlying rib change shape which can lead to loss of apparent

breast size as the implants tend to hide in the chest



It can make secondary surgery more difficult



Skin stretch which causes premature drooping of the breast and

“bottoming out” of the pocket



Both of these conditions can be difficult to fix and the patient may end up needing

a lift with the obvious, visible scars



This is quite often determined by the type of skin elasticity

that a patient has



Larger implants can also cause the breast to have an unusual “augmented”

appearance and can appear more rounded or globular shaped



There is a higher risk of implant malposition and displacement

with larger breast implants



Large breast implants may also cause discomfort due to the weight



Large implants can cause a condition known as symmastia, which means

that the breast tissue between



the breasts can lift giving the effect of one breast instead of two



This is not to say that every woman should choose small breast implants



but when choosing the breast implant size, factors other than how large you would

like to be should also be considered
