Also known as white or silver rum, light rums are delicate in flavor, though not necessarily lacking in complexity. Aged white rums can have color removed through filtering, and are great for making mixed drinks like the mojito.

In the Caribbean, Jamaica, Haiti, and Martinique are known for producing volumes of this heavier style of rum, though the Central American countries of Guatemala and Nicaragua tout the most well respected. Deeper and darker, these rums lend themselves well to cocktails in need of added weight and flavor, but represent the first tier of the great sipping rums.

Following the lead of their pirate foes, the British Royal Navy swapped their daily beer rations for a daily ration of a half-pint of 160 proof (80%) alcohol in 1740. The rum was usually mixed with the daily lime ration (nicknamed “limeys”) the sailors had to wash down to fight scurvy.

Rum Passport Club

Despite its long and sordid past, rum is an undeniable part of world history, and an important part of our American history. Born of

molasses, a once discarded byproduct of the sugar industry, rum is, at its birth, an accident. In fact, before the 1620s most molasses

was simply dumped in the ocean. Well, like our pirate brethren before us, we’re certainly happy they found a better use for it. From

industrial waste to a $2 billion industry in the U.S. alone, rum has come a long way, and the industry is still growing. More refined and

creative production methods are popping up every day, and the spirit that has been called “the most unregulated in the world” is now

more delicious than ever. It took almost 400 years to get this good, so don’t waste another minute;
