    percenthigherasseveral industries,publicandprivate,postedemploymentgainscompared to January2012. Those

    sectorsthatdidntpostjobadditionsheldfairlystableovertheyear.

    NearlyeveryindustrysectorpostedajobcutinJanuary,thoughthebulkoflossescameingovernmentandtradetransportationandutilities. Governmentdeclineswere the resultof temporary reductions insupportstaffand

    studentworkers instateuniversitiesasstategovernmentfellby1,100jobsmonthly. Trade,transportationand

    utilitiesfellprimarilyduetoasubstantialdropof1,200jobs intheareasretailsector,which istypicalfollowing

    theholidayshoppingseason.

    GoodsproducersalsoexhibitednotablejobdeclinesinJanuaryasaresultofseasonallabormarketslowdownsintheseandrelatedsectors. Constructionemployerscut300jobsoverthemonthasweathercontinuedtoimpact

    residential and commercial activity,while areamanufacturing posted 400 fewerjobsmonthly. Both of these

    losseswerewithintypicalseasonalnorms,thoughcombinedthesetwosectorsweredown200overtheyear.

    Jobswere2.1percenthighercomparedtoJanuaryoflastyear,withseveralindustriespostingjobgains. Despitestategovernmentjobadditionscontributingtoa2,100governmentjobincrease,theprivatesectorlocallyadded

    2,100jobsovertheyearaswell. Professionalandbusinessservicesjobsroseby900overtheyear,duemostlyto

    growth inprofessionalandtechnicalservices(notrelatedtotemporaryhelpandstaffingagencies). Educationa

    andhealthservicesadded700jobsovertheyear,mostlyreflectinggainsinthehealthcaresector.

    Lansingmetroareajobsdeclined2.2percent in January, followingdrops inbothNovemberandDecember2012

    Thebulkof the4,800 losscame intheserviceprovidingsector,asgovernmenteducation, leisureandhospitalityand

    retail

    trade

    all

    posted

    fewer

    jobs

    over

    the

    month

    due

    to

    typical

    seasonal

    layoffs.

    Since

    January

    2012,

    jobs

    edged

    upward0.2percentduemostlytoprivatesectorgainsacrossanumberofserviceprovidingindustries.

    Supportstaffandstudentworkerreductionsinstateuniversitiescontinuedtopushoverallgovernmentjobslowein January, though local schoolsalso reducedjobs formidwinterbreaks. Stategovernment fell800over the

    monthwhile local government shrunkby400 seasonally. Privateeducational andhealth services registered a

    seasonaldropof500jobsandleisureandhospitalityjobsdipped700inJanuary.

    Retailtradecontributed500ofthe800overalllossintrade,transportationandutilities,asareastorescutholidayrelated temporary staff. The goodsproducing sector also felt the impact of reduced consumer demand and

    winterweatherconditions,asconstructionemployers reduced staffby400over themonthandmanufacturing

    declinedby800. Allofthesechangeswerewithintypicalseasonalpatterns,thougheachmonthly losswas less

    substantialthan10yearpostedaverages.

    Lansing area jobs were largely stable compared to January 2012, edging upward by 500 annually. Stategovernmentposted fewerjobs in January2013,pushing theoverallpublic sector lower,butnearly allprivate

    serviceproviding industriesandmanufacturingaddedjobsduringthisperiod. Theareasconstructionjobtotals

    werealsorevisednotablyfromprevious2012levels,andthoughdown8.0percentannuallyinJanuary2013,the

    revisedannualaveragefor2012exhibitednochangecomparedto2011. Previously,thesectorhadbeentracking

    substantiallylowerovertheyear.
