A NNUAL Raising funds to support excellence REPORT 2012–2013 BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT GROUP YOUR UNRESTRICTED GIFT WILL GO WHERE IT IS MOST NEEDED EVERY CONTRIBUTION MAKES A DIFFERENCE! The Berkeley High School Development Group deeply appreciates your continuing support and generosity. Berkeley High is one of the largest high schools in Northern California and, as Principal Scuderi reminds us in his opening letter to the community, is “one of the most dynamic, creative and diverse high schools in the country.” It is also a school with special challenges. Although we are fortunate to live in an area with extraordinary educational resources, those riches are not equally accessible to all members of our student body. Over the years, the Development Group has funded a variety of innovative programs to address these inequities and secure quality educational opportunities for all our students. Those programs include a comprehensive after-school tutoring program, AP exam fee reductions, and grants for first year college expenses, as well as grants available to all BHS teachers for classroom supplies. These programs, and others like them, are all the more important this year as Principal Scuderi leads school-wide efforts to adapt to the new Common Core State Standards. Our school community thrives despite, and not because of, current levels of state funding. Some of us grew up in California public schools that were the envy of the nation, when the state ranked in the top ten for per-pupil spending. California now ranks at 49th in the country when adjusted for cost of living factors. We all need to do what we can to ensure our students get the support they need. Your help is critical. You can help us by signing up for eScrip, buying paper scrip, or joining the Board of the Development Group. And, of course, you can donate generously. In the past, contributions have typically come from only about 10% of our BHS families. If you are a member of that 10%, thank you and we hope you will renew your contribution. If you are among the 90% who haven’t yet given, it’s not too late! Please consider giving to help us nurture our amazing educational community. Please make your donation today! Projects funded BY Your suPPort in 2012–2013

2012–2013 AnnuAl rePort finAnces summArYIn the 2012–2013 school year, the Berkeley High School Development Group received and processed

over $500,000 of donations and other revenues. of that $500,000 BHSDG received over $298,000 in

donations not designated for specific purposes. From these unrestricted revenues BHSDG provided

funding for academic, athletic, artistic and club programs at Berkeley High School. After School

tutoring, a BHSDG-funded program, received $45,000, and individual $225 Classroom needs grants

were made available which cost $28,000 for the year. the BHSDG’s fundraising and administrative

expenses were $40,500 for the school year. We carried forward $25,000 as a reserve for future needs,

and are committing $30,000 to pay for the After School tutoring program for fall 2013–2014, as well

as $30,000 for Classroom needs grants in individual amounts up to $250 per teacher.

We also began the 2013–2014 school year by granting discretionary funds in excess of $4,000 to

various departments and support staff for supplies such as tissues, folders, markers, and other needs.

BHSDG received approximately $202,000 in donations and other revenue earmarked for

specific programs and departments, the spending of which is determined by these programs

and departments. BHSDG administers these funds at no cost as a service to BHS. Berkeley High

departments and programs spent approximately $168,000 of their earmarked funds on a wide

range of equipment and educational enrichment opportunities.

The mission of the Berkeley High

School Development Group is

to support and strengthen the

educational experience of all

students at Berkeley High School.

After school tutoring ProgrAmBHS offers its students many challenging and rigorous classes,

and some students may find they need additional academic

support to master their coursework. For the sixth consecutive

year, BHSDG was proud to sponsor and help administer an

extraordinary onsite drop-in tutoring program for BHS students

in multiple subjects, using BHS teachers.

the free program, open to any BHS student seeking extra

assistance, provided 60 weekly sessions in math, science, world

languages, english and art. together, the 41 participating

teachers provided close to two thousand tutoring sessions,

with each serving an average of seven students. the program

has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from teachers,

parents and students.

the tutoring program has already started this year with 40

teachers participating. Your donation is critical to ensure that

we can continue to fund this important program.

“1st steP” AwArds Assist needY college-Bound scholArsBHDGS is proud to be a major supporter of the 1st Step

Scholarship Fund. For ten years, this program has helped

students with the greatest financial need as they take their first

steps toward college. Many low income students with good

financial aid packages face initial fees, deposits, transportation

costs and other miscellaneous expenses before they arrive at

college to pick up their first financial aid payment. last year, the

1st Step Scholarship Fund awarded 51 students scholarships of

up to $700 specifically to fill this financial gap. the recipients,

most of whom are the first in their family to go to college, are

now studying at private and public institutions all over the

country, including uClA, uC Berkeley, San Francisco State,

Boston university, Vassar, and Carnegie Mellon university.

please help us support this unique and important fund.

BHSDG extends a special thanks to those who contributed to the

1st Step Scholarship Fund in memory of alumnus Conrad Chevez.

BHSDG funded Band/orchestra section coaches and music lessons.

clAssroom needs grAntsover 75% of BHS and Berkeley technical Academy teachers

participated in the 2012-2013 Classroom needs Grants program.

this BHSDG program provided up to $225 to each teacher who

applied to purchase classroom supplies of any type that he

or she deemed necessary. last year, teachers used the grants

to enrich their classrooms with digital recorders, test tubes,

historical texts and calculators, subscriptions to the new York

times and other publications, as well as basic pens, binders and

paper clips, and many, many books. Several teachers who did

not need to spend their full allotted amount chose instead to

donate their allocation to other teachers.

With your generous support, BHSDG has been able to increase

the amount provided to $250 for the 2013-2014 school year.

BHSDG funded the 1st step Bhs counselors’ scholarship Fund. this program helps many Bhs students take their first steps toward college. pictured above are just a few of the 51 students who received scholarships this past year.

students set sights on college: Second College Fair at BHSthe Berkeley High School Development Group continued its

support for the College and Career Center with the Second

Annual College Fair for juniors on April 21, 2013. Call it

College Fair 2.0, as the event was expanded to include case

studies and a mock admissions review.

the event began with a small group session to learn

what goes on behind the closed doors of an admissions

committee meeting. Students and their parents or guardians

analyzed three college applications to discuss how

transcripts affect decisions, the importance of test scores,

how extracurricular activities are evaluated, and what

admissions committees look for in an essay. participants

discovered the process used to determine “acceptance,”

“denial,” or “waitlist” directly from a college admissions

representative.

over 300 students proceeded to the Jacket Gym to find

nearly 60 private and public colleges and universities

assembled, including uC Davis, Stanford, CSu Humboldt,

San Jose State university, peralta Community Colleges,

pitzer, Yale, Willamette, Vassar, university of Colorado,

Carleton, and Macalester. College representatives answered

questions about course offerings, campus life, and

application requirements, and provided information sheets

to take home. Many students of the Class of 2014 reported

program to help students transition into 9th grade and thrive

as high school students. to support this program last year,

BHSDG funded a Ropes Course for a cohort of incoming 9th

graders seeking to build community at the outset of their

high school careers. organizers reported the experience

taught the students important lessons about teamwork,

problem solving and perseverance.

students expressed their enthusiastic appreciation:

“Thank you for letting us have a chance to go to the ropes

course! … I learned not to be scared anymore and take a

risk for hard things.” –San Juana

“One of the things I learned was how I can do anything

with a little push.” –RaJa

“You’ve really helped a lot and I wish I could give you

something other than a letter.” –Daniel

that the presence of so many colleges on the BHS campus

made the hunt for a college easier and more affordable.

this impressive event was organized by the BHS College

and Career Counselors, Angela price and Skyler Barton, and

60 parent volunteers. We are grateful for donations of time,

talent, and goods from the BHS community, including Kathy

Brown, Fern Royce, Heather loucks, Jean Sanchirico, Dawn
