Language is a vehicle for communicating meaning and messages
SLA suggested two different ways of developing ability in second languages:
Acquisition and learning.
The behaviourists believe that SLA consists of learners imitating what they hear and
develop habits in the SLA by routine practice
Behaviorist said that errors are seen as first language habits interfering with the
acquisition of second language habits.
The nativists assume that – consciously or unconsciously – that somehow, second
language (L2) learning
can and should be like
learning our native language (L1)
The crucial element in the language acquisition process is the modified input
that learners are exposed to and the way in which native speakers interact in
conversations with learners
Learning (including SLA/SLL) is an active process.
People learn to learn as they learn
The crucial action of constructing meaning is mental
Learning involves language: the language we use influences learning
Learning is a social activity
Learning is contextual
One needs knowledge to learn
It takes time to learn
