FROM MY DESK The time is fast approaching for the National Poultry 2016 show being held in Sydney. Best wishes to our members Sonya Ford, Tony Milton, Anne Beaty, Tony Mann, Lou Sigmund, Inger Bray, Mark Lee, Liz Batcheldor who are exhibitors at this huge event which is held only every four years. They will be taking a range of various breeds from Australian and Croad Langshans, Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Sebrights, Old English Game, ducks, geese, turkeys, to name a few. The club has its own stand-alone banner which we will be displaying at poultry club shows and agricultural shows including Melburne Poultry Show in July to promote the club and the Langshan breeds. Tony Milton was charged with the unenviable task of organising this banner and I think you will all agree it looks fantastic. (Even if my photography is amateurish!)

ANNUAL SHOW Our club annual show is on 2nd July at Melbourne Showgrounds. You will receive your schedules by early June. The closing date for entries is 23rd June. A bit of housework first - Please help with the catering as our club shares in the profits taken on the day. We also ask that each exhibitor contribute to the morning tea with a dozen or so small cakes or slices which are shared amongst the other clubs. Also, at the end of the day please scrape clean your pens (onto the floor is fine) because it is a huge job for those left behind to do the cleanup and when you get older (like me!) it is even harder so your help in this area iw most appreciated. Thanks. I am really looking forward to seeing all your fabulous Langshans and catching up with club members both new and old. SEE YOU ALL THERE. The club is again proudly sponsoring beautiful sashes for Champion Langshan at the following poultry club shows and agricultural shows . Footscray and Maffra Ag, Royal Melbourne Poultry Show and the Langshan Club of Australia. We are going to look at perhaps donating sashes for Champion Langshan in Show to other States for example Hobart Royal or Launceston Royal in Tassie and one or two shows in South Australia or perhaps the Territory as we have a member there too, so if members in those States have a request for their local show please let me know. It is the clubs aim to promote the Langshan breeds of fowl far and wide as we all know the benefits of owning and breeding Langshans. As mentioned in the last newsletter we now have members in all States except WA and Qld. This is a great feather in our cap as a breed club. Deb Sigmund

BITS AND PIECES AND SNIPPETS

Hard working committee member Tony Milton has had a relaxing and fascinating holiday in Sri Lanka, his favourite place to visit for a holiday and after riding elephants, tasting exotic foods and drinks, he is back home cooking up a storm as usual as Executive Chef in the Yarra Valley. Get Well George Norman. George has had a couple of stays in hospital over the past few months and is now on the way to good health again. George is judging the Croad Langshans at Poultry 2016 and was adamant that the doctors ensure he be fit and well by that date especially after a hernia op. which curtailed his poultry activities for 6 weeks which was a difficult thing for George to do! Dot Birchall’s book about her life has been going like hotcakes in fact there are only two left so if you would like a copy either phone me on 57 632468 or email [email protected]. I have read the book and it is amazing what one woman can do in a lifetime. The books (what is left) will be available at our show in July.

FROM ACROSS THE STRAIGHT At the recent Ulverstone Show in April, Maurice Young won Champion SF Bantam with a black Langshan plt

and Champion SF Large with a black Langshan female. To finish the day on top he won BIRD IN SHOW with his Langshan Bantam pulet. Congratulations Maurice. A poultry auction was held on 2nd May at Longford and with Denis Lyne at the helm it was a very successful day with some birds making good prices. Kevin Collins took his first trip on the Spirit of Tasmania to take his birds to the auction and says he was happy with the prices he got and enjoyed the friendly, enthusiastic Tasmanian hospitality. More news from Tassie in the next newsletters. Launceston Royal is coming up fast so if you are thinking of jumping on the Spirit of Tasmania for a relaxing cruise across the Straight, call into the show and say hello to the Tasmanian breeders and members of our club. Denis and Rosemary Lyne will be pleased to meet you.

GEELONG SUPER SHOW BIRD IN SHOW - GEORGE NORMAN -

Congratulations George on taking out the big one at the Geelong Super Show. It is something everyone would love to win sometime as the $1000 first prize is worth winning. The winner of this award is also given the opportunity donate $400 to a poultry club of his choice and George has generously shared this money between four clubs one of which is the Langshan Club of Victoria, Thank you George. MEMBER PROFILE

INGER BRAY When Inger was 13 years old she and her family moved from Norway to Canberra where they lived for six years. Inger moved back overseas to St. Andrews University were she completed her Masters Degree then returned to Australia . She applied to get her Masters at University of Technology in Sydney where she lived for two years. Inger ran a Horse Rescue & Rehoming non for profit organisation called Epona’s Pastures for a few years before moving to Melbourne and it is there that the met and married Matt and they now live in the Heathcote area where Inger breeds her beloved Croad Langshans. How long have you been involved with poultry - About 5 years What breeds of poultry have you owned - I started off with ex-battery hens then I bought some Australorps, RIR, large Malays. I developed an interest in traditional large meat birds and tried crossbreeding my Australorps, Brahmas and RIR with the large Malays to try and get firmer meat. I came across the Croad Langshans for table birds and bought a trio from Mark Lee. I loved this unique rare breed of poultry and it inspired me to take them on and try to improve and maintain this breed in Australia so I now only own the Croad Langshans.

What advice do you have for people new to the poultry fancy - Join your local poultry club. It is a great way to meet other breeders and people interested in poultry who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences, many of whom have owned poultry for years. When I got my Croads I joined Kyneton Poultry Club and have found it to be a invaluable benefit and has created for me a network of people and organisations with is great . The Langshan Club of Victoria, Mark Lee and my friend Jill have been a wonderful support and are very important to me. What other interests do you have - Horse riding. I love to go trail riding through the bush. I own four horses at the moment. What is your favourite food - Thai green curry and Laksa. AND Icecream – I love icecream!! What is your favourite drink - There is nothing better than sitting back relaxing with a Gin & Tonic in the afternoon or a glass of sparkly and I also enjoy Earl Grey Tea. If you could invite any three people to dinner who would you ask - My immediate family. Family is most important to me. Where do you see yourself in 5 years. - I will still have interest in poultry, perhaps some new breeds as my knowledge expands. Page 5

It's Showtime with my Langy bantams

If you are a breeder of Australian Langshan bantams, like I am, it is the best time of the year watching

your young birds grow and develop into something good enough to exhibit at a Poultry Show.

Over the past few months, more time has been spent sorting out the hopefuls, seeing which birds will

mature in time for a particular show. Birds need to be checked over regularly to ensure no broken

feathers, checked for lice, and wormed. They need to be fed good quality feed, with access to greens and

treats. A higher protein feed is recommended for the pullets when they commence to lay. Regular

cleaning of pens is required, and if kept in show pens or training cages picking up the 'poo' every day

keeps the cage cleaner and stops too much sticking to the feathers on their feet.

Penning up the cockerals can be exciting comparing them against each other to see which ones look the

best. Some may need a little more time than others to grow out, their tails may not be fully through so

don't discard them too quickly.

I love to watch them play outside, the blacks look great with their green sheen glowing, if they look healthy

then you must be doing something right. I find depending on how the blues are bred, that you need to

limit the sunlight because some may start to go brown in colour instead of blue colouring. Keeping the

white variety lends itself to a little more work to keep them clean, they need a few more washes at the

beginning but will stay clean if their cage is spotless.

Whilst tending to the young birds, the older stock will have been going through their yearly moult. When

they come through their moult they look great with their new feathers, and if you want to show them

they will also have needed the regular worm & lice treatment and pen cleaned out. The older birds may

also need a pedicure and the old scales removed. What I call fun times!

They say the more effort you put in, the more rewards you receive. That is with anything in life I guess,

and I have had my fair share of success with these little birds.

Australian Langshan bantams are wonderful little birds, full of character, the more time you spend with

some of them the friendlier they become.

Good luck to everyone with your birds this season. Showing poultry is a great way to meet people and

make friends.
