OPERATING PROCEDURES DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER OPERATING PRIORITIES The first operational priority is always the safety of students, staff and the public. If schools can safely be opened, Langley School District will do its best to deliver education programs and services by opening all or some of its schools and providing bus services. Following is a sequential outline of the operating procedures Langley School District uses during periods of inclement weather: DAY BEFORE

• School District Officials monitor weather services and contact other agencies as necessary NIGHT BEFORE

• District and contracted crews clear lots and entrances to prevent accumulations of snow • District crews effect repairs where necessary to ready schools for operations

4:30 AM • Maintenance department checks all schools to ensure power is on and they are ready to receive students • Transportation department checks bus routes

6:15 AM • Based on Maintenance and Transportation assessments, weather forecast and reports from other agencies • Superintendent of Schools makes initial decisions on school status.

6:30 AM • Reports posted on the School Status page of the district web site and on the Langley School District Information Hotline. Radio stations

CKNW (980 AM) and CKWX (1130) notified of Langley schools' status. 7:00 AM

• School Board Office switchboard opened one-hour early • School Status page, information hotline and radio stations updated as necessary

DURING DAY • Weather information monitored • Crews dispatched to maintain sites as necessary

END OF DAY • Debriefing • Assessment made of weather forecasts and condition of sites • Information posted on School Status page, information hotline about forecasts and conditions.

NOTE TO PARENTS Parents must make individual decisions as to the appropriateness of sending their children to school during periods of inclement weather. Langley School District cannot be aware of circumstances in every neighbourhood or that may affect individual students when it makes its assessments of School Status. The district's objective on inclement days is to offer service to students who can safely get to school.

Senior Boys Soccer The Senior Boys Soccer team was ranked 4th out of the 16 teams participating in the Fraser Valley Championships. In their first game, they easily handled Panorama Ridge and came out with a 2-0 win. Chad De Boer had both goals for the Saints, and Taw Hser, the Shut-out. In the next match, the Saints had to get past the defending provincial champions out of Coquitlam, Charles Best Secondary. The team was very determined and finished the match with a 3-0 win. Chad De Boer, Braedon Williams, and Domenic Rigaux had the goals. Taw Hser was solid in net with another shut-out. In the Fraser Valley Semi-Final, the Saints were up against Surrey’s Princess Margaret. This was a very tough match as both teams were evenly matched. Brad Keen opened the scoring and later assisted the second goal scored by Chad De Boer. PM got a goal back late, but the boys held on to a 2-1 win. This win placed the Saints into the Fraser Valley

Championship match against the Number 1 ranked team in the Province, the North Delta Huskies. The Fraser Valley Final was a match for the ages. Both teams had their chances early on. The Saints capitalized on a free kick in the North Delta half. Brad Keen scored on a beautiful ball played into the box by Cameron McDonald. North Delta had a chance to even the score before half-time, but missed the net on a penalty shot. In the second half, North Delta put on the pressure trying to score the tying goal, but the Saints defence was up to the task. Solid defensive performances by

Phillip Baena, McDonald, Josh Resvick, Dylan Mason, and Braedon Williams. Taw Hser was also on his A-Game as he got his third shut-out of the tournament. The Langley Secondary Saints became the first soccer team from Langley to ever win the Fraser Valley High School Soccer Championships. The Saints entered the Provincial Championships with an 11-0 season and have only allowed 4 goals against all season. The team is currently ranked #1 in the province and have a great chance at winning the Provincial Tournament. The Provincials were cancelled this past week due to the snow covered fields in Burnaby. The plan of the soccer commission is to reschedule during spring (April/May). On another note, Phillip Baena was named to the Commissioners’ Eleven Man Team at the Banquet on Nov

Congratulations to the entire team and the coaches, Mr. Angelo Pulice and Mr. Gurpreet Mahil!

It is that time of year once again to help those in our community with the Christmas season. Last year, our grade 12 students adopted a family from the Ishtar Transition House, and one from the Christmas Bureau. The LSS community was able to raise $2600.00. This year, our grade 12 students have adopted two families: one from the Ishtar Transition House, which consists of a mom, a 6 year-old girl, 9 year-old boy, 13 year-old boy, and a 15 year old girl. Our second family consists of a mom, a dad, a 17 year-old boy, a 15 year-old boy, and a 13 year-old girl. Students will be collecting loonies or toonies in block 3 during the week of Monday, December 6 – Friday, December 10. Any donations of money are greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the office in care of Michelle Bennett. We hope, with your generosity, to make this a great Christmas for our families in nee

Musical Theatre The musical theatre class this year is 100 strong, with students from grades 7 through 12. Despite losing our classroom/performance space due to the flooding in September, we’ve been working in nooks & crammings into classrooms as we rehearse for the show. We are very excited to get the small gym back in the next few weeks! In October, we worked in Pacific Academy’s theatre space with UBC Theatre Professor, Stephen Heatley. Students learned about characterization through music and how each word is chosen carefully by the lyricist to make the most powerful statement. This year’s show is a concert revue. We are working very hard in class each week to bring to the stage many classics from the Rodgers & Hammerstein collection (The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Carousel, Cinderella, State Fair, The King & I, and Oklahoma). Our show opens March 3rd and runs until March12th. Tickets will go on sale in January. We are always looking for a few committed students to help run the technical aspects of a show. If you want to be a part, contact one of the teachers for more information. (Mr. Hendricks, Ms. Kay, Mrs. Thorpe, Mr. Leonard)

Dance The 1st semester dance classes are working hard to learn a variety of different pieces. These works will be presented in January at our “Evening of Dance”. Dancers from grades 9 through 12 will perform class dances, small group pieces, and self-choreographed solos. We look forward to seeing you there! Tickets go on sale in January. Contact Ms. Kay or a dance student to reserve your seat.

Evening of Dance - Thursday, January 13th (7:00 pm) LSS Small Gym ** $5 ** Alice in Wonderland Our very own grade 11 student, Marinna Delisimunovic is performing in the Royal Canadian Theatre Company’s Traditional British Panto of “Alice in Wonderland”. The show plays at the Surrey Arts Centre December 16th to January 2nd. See the attached poster for more information on booking tickets. Break a leg Marinna!

Choir The choir enjoyed their fall retreat November 19/20th. Twenty-one singers participated in the retreat, which included lots of rehearsal time, a not-quite-long-enough sleep on the hard floor, voice lessons from Geordie Roberts or Alison Nystrom, seeing Harry Potter VII and tons of food. Some of us even went to Castle Fun Park to finish off the day. Huge thank yous to our amazing chaperones Ms. Duffield -Harding, Mr. McLean, Mrs. Maloway, Mrs. Okamoto and to the Dunstall, Batt and Olynyk families for their willingnes to help with transportation. Thanks also to the choir members for your hard work at the retreat. As always, it is a privilege to work with you. Mrs. P. Thorpe Upcoming Concerts

Thursday, December 2nd at 7:30 pm at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on the Fraser Hwy - District Choral Festival, admission by donation. Wednesday, December 8th at 7:00 pm at LSS Music Department Winter Concert, admission by donation. (Choir members are reminded to check rehearsal times for both Dec. 2 & 8th as you will be needed after school on both days but not at 7:00 am.)

Grad Baby Ads for the Yearbook

Each year the Langley Secondary Yearbook Staff offers parents and guardians of this year's graduates a chance to purchase a "Grad-Baby Ad." Once purchased, the ads will be featured in the grad section of our school annual. These ads usually feature baby or childhood photos of your son or daughter, along with a personal message to congratulate your graduate. The cost of a "Grad-Baby Ad" is $40.00 and usually works best with a horizontal photo, but we will scan in and work with anything given to us. All photos will be in full colour

this year. You may also send your photo as a high resolution jpeg file to [email protected] if you prefer. Please keep your message to a maximum of 300 characters (spaces and punctuation included). Make cheques payable to L.S.S. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that we may return your original picture. You may contact Ms. Rees, the sponsor teacher, at (604) 533-4171 local 260 for assistance. Ads will not be placed until everything is complete. The deadline to get pictures in is Friday, December 17, 2010. Please have them in by this date, to guarantee their placement in this year's annual. Thank you for your support! The graduates always enjoy seeing each other "the way they were". Ms S. Rees and the LSS Yearbook Staff 2011 LSS Grad Comments for Yearbook It’s the time of year to write your Grad Comment for the yearbook. POSTAGE STAMPS for GUIDE DOGS

Ms. D. Turner’s class is helping the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind collect used postage stamps to raise funds to purchase guide dogs for the blind. Care to help us? Here’s how: Cut or tear the stamp from the envelope (but not too close). When you tear off the stamps please leave at least one-quarter inch of paper around the stamp. This protects the perforations. If these are damaged, the stamp is worthless. There is no need to include the postmark. Please drop off the used stamps at the LSS main office in the “Stamp Box”. A stamp has no value if it has:

-Damaged perforations -Been torn or creased -A very black cancellation mark -A ballpoint or pencil mark (done to cancel the stamp) -Scotch tape or any other paper on stamp -Metered postage is of no value as there is no actual stamp. This also applies to the printed stamp on airmail.

Have a look at some of the dogs that were purchased and trained through this program. http://www.guidedogs.ca/photogallery.htm
