Looking back on my life I now realize I’ve been a designer since my childhood, without even knowing it. I built Lego contraptions spanning my entire room, playhouses using pillow cushions and blankets, and tree forts using found items in the woods behind my house. Every day. I simply used my imagination to create with the resources available to me.

Designing gives me the opportunity to imagine and create every day, which I now realize was a childhood dream. Now, it is my dream to make a positive impact on people and our environment simply by using my imagination. Here, you will see some of what I have imagined.

A greenway connecting Naylor Road Metro station to National Harbor through D.C. and Prince George’s County. The Oxon Run Greenway will better connect people to their surroundings, and strengthen that connection by educating the users.

GIS was used to analyze the abiotic, biotic and cultural features of the area in order to find the best location for the greenway, as well as what amenities it will connect. These amenities include the various schools in the area, which are connected to each other to foster collaboration between them.

The greenway follows the Oxon Run stream, which was naturalized in areas where it was once channelized. Along the Oxon Run Greenway, areas were considered for further design consideration. I chose Oxon Hill Farm, which was redeveloped to create a greater connection to the greenway and its surroundings, including the City of Forest Heights.

Tucked between interstates 295 and 495, Oxon Hill Farm is a commodity for the area that is under utilized by the surrounding population. By enhancing the existing farm, adding a farmers market, more pedestrian trails, and a park, the farm will attract more users.

Hill East is the site of the now abandoned DC General Hospital, which is slated for redevelopment by the city government. It is bounded by a residential neighborhood to the west, DC Jail to the south, the Anacostia River to the east and RFK stadium to the north. This creates a distinct boundary between the site and its surroundings.

I chose to design the development of Hill East so these boundaries dissolve to create a seamless transition. To achieve this, the grid and avenue street scheme was extended into the site. Also, the civic use within the site, the health campus, was placed adjacent to the jail, which is another necessary civic use of the city.

A curvilinear road borders the Anacostia waterfront park, varying the views of the waterfront as you drive. The retail district is along this road and continues to RFK stadium, becoming part of the tourist attraction of the stadium. The canal and bridge extend the retail district into the waterfront park.

The artistic bridge can be seen from various points in the city and attracts users to the waterfront. The canal extends Burke street into the Anacostia river. Water elements, including fountains, are found along Burke street from the metro station to the canal, connecting the city to the Anacostia.

District Heights, a municipality in Prince George’s County, asked our studio for assistance in helping to plan for the redevelopment of their community. The city is lacking a park within its own city boundaries, so I chose to help them change that.

By annexing local property and moving the location of a new school building, property opens up for this purpose. This park also becomes a part of a larger green connection through the city, which includes changing County Road, a major thoroughfare, into a green street.

The city of District Heights currently has an elementary school that will not be adequate for future population increase. A larger school building is proposed to be built on the current schools property at the intersection of two main roads within the city, creating a visual and physical anchor in the center of the city.

Moving the school building to the intersection creates more space for a larger playground and sports fields. The school grounds and adjacent park become great additions in the community.

A young family living in Abingdon, MD was looking to revamp their small town home backyard. The client had specific functions they wanted to achieve, including areas for their child to play while still being able to entertain guests.

The client was looking to: anchor into the ground an existing 10’ x 10’ gazebo; install a sand box and a rubber mulch area for their small child to play in; keep existing vegetation, as well as add more; and have a natural stone patio area.

Various conceptual ideas were thought through before landing on the final design, which includes everything the client desired, and keeping within their budget.

The plants were chosen to act as companions to the existing shrubs and evergreens. The flagstone patio was installed to allow for all runoff to enter one planter, which was planted with water loving plants.

A family living on Bodkin Creek was looking to re-design their entire property, including the waterfront. The client was looking to have a ‘tropical paradise’ in their backyard. Since building that close to the water is not an option, the tropical feel was accomplished in plant choice.

The plant palette includes plants that thrive in the USDA plant hardiness zone that still have a tropical feel. These include various ornamental grasses, shrubs, and perennials that are compatible with each other. The planting beds including these ‘tropical’ plants enclose a beach area, creating a tropical oasis.

The existing deck was extended a few feet to add a full service outdoor kitchen and bar area. This adds more outdoor living space for the family and their many guests. The bar is positioned so that the users face the view of the waterfront, pier, beach and the tropical oasis.

The client also asked for a re-design of their front entry. The entry was enhanced by adding a small pergola and patio at the front entry, with a walkway down to the entry of the backyard. This entry is also flanked by a smaller pergola. The side of the house is an existing boggy area, where a wide array of water loving plants were chosen for planting.
