More than HorsesEquine Issues & Leadership Class Develops Industry Leaders

Rebecca Bott’s parents gave her a summer’s worth of riding lessons for her birthday when she was 10. The gift turned her obsession with horses into a hobby,

and then a passion which led her to pursue a career in equine education.

“People warned my parents that it wouldn’t be just one summer of lessons – they were right,” says Bott, an assistant professor of Animal Science and the SDSU Extension equine specialist.

When she joined the faculty at South Dakota State University in 2009, Bott wanted to introduce a new course to the equine curriculum. When she developed the course curriculum for Equine Issues & Leadership, she decided to use hot topics in the equine industry as a platform to develop industry leaders.

Bott has just finished bedding down a mare and her one-week old foal when she sits on a bale of hay resting in the alleyway of the SDSU Horse Barn and begins to visit about how the program began.

Equine Issues & Leadership student Jessica Smith and Rebecca Bott, an assistant professor of Animal Science at South Dakota State University and the SDSU Extension equine specialist, take check on a week-old foal and its mother at the SDSU horse unit.

“Many equine programs around the country teach content. They cover the traditional equine courses like nutrition and reproduction. I wanted to augment the curriculum and challenge my students to really think about the challenges and is-sues facing the industry, and equip them with the skills they need to step into leadership roles in this industry,” says Bott.

The course incorporates a class thesis, individual projects, team projects and community presenta-tions. It also focuses on an in-dustry challenge the class selects. Throughout the semester, students are expected research the topic, de-velop solutions, write a class thesis paper and develop a group presen-tation to educate the general public about the specific topic. Bott also invites industry professionals to

visit with students.

Each project is designed to stretch and challenge the students. In the end, the class provides students with opportunities to develop interpersonal, professional and leadership skills which they can take with them into their future careers.

“The entire class is designed as a learning process,” says Kathy Koch, a second-year master’s student from Crofton, Neb. Koch said the class helped her mold her writing skills and develop a professional mindset.

Because the class selects the issue to focus on for the semester, each year the topic is different. This year the class focused on controversial train-ing methods in each equine disci-pline and discussed the pros and

cons of the methods. Discussing a controversial topic with a diverse group of students and working together to develop a presentation was a challenge that junior Jessica Smith was ready to take on.

“I knew this class wasn’t going to be easy, but I was ready for a challenge,” says the Pierre, S.D., native. “Just being in a group of people who all have different skills to bring to the table and working together was unique.”

Smith adds that when she first learned that the class involved a group project, she was nervous. However, she says her fear that she’d end up doing all the work, were unfounded.

“We all pulled together and held each other accountable,” Smith says.

2Smith’s fears are not uncommon explains Bott. How-ever, because the Equine Issues & Leadership class is an elective course, students who sign up for the class are prepared to work hard and ready for a challenge.

“Working on team projects is usually the most dreaded experience in college. But it’s also one of the more important skills to develop,” Bott says. “In life you work with other people. There is really no way

around it – especially when you work in the horse industry.”

The class wraps up by developing a presentation around thesis research. Each student participates in the presentation that is shared with student and com-munity groups.

“Before this class I didn’t like public speaking. But af-ter giving the presentation a few times, it now comes

naturally to me,” Smith says, of the presentations the class gave on campus to students and Brookings com-munity members, at the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City and during a horse show in Sioux Falls.

Bott says community education is a key element to the class curriculum.

“There is value in intrinsic knowledge, but the real impact comes from putting that knowledge into action,” Bott says. “I feel some of the struggles or controversies in the equine industry are due to the lack of communication and developing a mutual understanding.”

Pursuing a two-year degree in general agriculture with an equine specialization, Smith says after taking the Equine Issues & Leadership class she is eager to start her career in the equine industry – whether that be training horses or helping manage a horse operation.

“This class helped me reach a new level of maturity and become a leader. That is what I believe college is all about – helping me develop the skills that I will need in my future career,” Smith says.

Working with insects has never bothered Eugene Bolka. In fact, years before

his career with the U.S. Forest Service in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Bolka ate insects as part of survival training courses he taught in the Air Force.

“Insects are quite amazing, and intel-ligent,” says the range technician and noxious weed coordinator for the Mystic District.

He shares an example of the Oberea erythrocephala, a stem-mining insect he and his team use to help control leafy spurge.

“She uses her pinchers to girdle the plant until its sap drips out. Then she drills a hole above that line and lays her eggs. If she didn’t first drain the sap, there’d be so much pressure in the stem that the sap would push her eggs out,” he explains.

This stem miner is one of many APHIS-approved (Animal Plant Health Inspec-tion Service) insects Bolka has in his arsenal to control noxious weeds on the roughly 300,000 acres that make up the Mystic District of the Black Hills.

Bolka shares his insights and answers to commonly asked questions about implementing biological controls as part of a farm or ranch integrated pest man-agement plan with Land & Livestock readers.

Q: What is biological control and why does the Forest Service implement it?

A: Biological control is the introduction

of an organism, in our case insects, to manage noxious weeds. Although we also use herbicides, there are many areas where we can’t use chemicals because of sensitive species.

Biological control is an effective, long-term solution. Bugs don’t stop at a fence line, so if a group of neighbors worked together to co-op the expenses to get started and release systematically, they could really make a big impact on nox-ious weed control.

We review our release sites frequently and have data which shows the insects’ ability to control a variety of noxious weeds. We use a variety of insects to control Canada thistle, musk thistle, common mullein, leafy spurge, spotted knapweed, St. Johnswort and Dalmatian toadflax.

Q: Is biological control safe to use? Do you worry about released insects having a negative impact?

A: Biological control is very safe. Before insects are approved for release, APHIS puts the insects through rigorous test-ing – in some cases an insect will go through 20 years of testing before they are approved for release. The insects are exposed to every kind of plant they think it may come in with, to see if it attacks non-invasive species or crops.

Many of the insects come from overseas – researchers go to the country where the invasive weed originated and look for insects that are adapted to control it. A lot of research is conducted overseas before bringing the insect to the U.S. for

Q: Why is biological control a good option for con-trolling Canada thistle?

A: Canada thistle, like most noxious weeds, is dif-ficult to control. You can spray it and its root system survives. You can disc it, but each time you run the disc through it, and each time you cut the root system another plant develops. If it’s hayed, seeds are spread as the hay is hauled down the road.

Canada thistle produces about 1,500 seeds per plant. These seeds can remain viable in the soil for up to 30 years.

Biological control works well for Canada thistle be-cause these insects attack the plant preventing it from producing seeds and injuring the root system. As the insects propagate, they continue to control the thistle for the long-term.

Q: What biological control do you use to control Canada thistle and how do they work?

A: We use three different insects to control Canada thistle.

1. GaLL FLy – the gall fly works by laying its eggs on one of the stems. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the stem and create a gall. The gall prevents nutrients from getting to the seed head, preventing the plant from producing seed. If we’re lucky, the gall fly will lay

its eggs on the main stem of the plant, and prevent the entire plant from producing seeds.

2. HadropLontus LItura (stem-mining weevil) – this insect lays its eggs on the stem. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae bur-row through the stem itself and overwinter in the root system. This actually kills the entire plant, pre-venting the stem from producing seed and injuring the root system.

3. LarInus pLanus (bud weevil) – this insect eats the top of the plant, feeding on buds before they flower, preventing the plant from producing seed. In our experience, we have not seen very great results from these bud weevils.

Q: Tell us a little about managing biological control. Where do you purchase the insects and how do you

manage them?

A: There are a few APHIS-certified providers in the United States where you can purchase biological con-trols. We purchase ours from Integrated Weed Control in Bozeman, Mont., www.integratedweedcontrol.com, 888-319-1632.

The company you purchase the biological control from will let you know the best time to release the insects, and provide you with the correct number of insects for

the area you hope to cover.

Insects are an investment. In my district, once we’ve built up a population of biological control; instead of ordering new insects each time we want to release, we’ll catch our own and release them in a new area.

Each time we release insects, we pound a fence post in the ground with a number on it. We record how many insects were released and what type was released. We’ve been releasing insects since 1989, and have more than 400 release sites – so this helps us keep track.

Even if you’re only releasing insects on a few acres, it is important to keep track of where you release them because if you are using insects as part of your manage-ment plan, you need to avoid the release area when you spray herbicide.

The company you order your insects from will be able to tell you how far from a release site insects will travel.

If you have more questions about biological control, Bolka encourages you to email him at [email protected].

A Flock with A PurposeAt a glance, the sheep on the other side of Jerry

Pommer’s fence don’t look special. They just look like normal sheep. There is no outside indica-

tor to say that this flock contentedly grazing may help provide a cure to Alzheimer’s or increase lamb survival rates. However, under the microscope, the truth comes out. Pommer’s flock is a pathogen free and available to researchers from across the U.S. and Canada to use in agricultural and biomedical research.

“On the outside they are normal sheep,” says Pom-mer, a farm kid from Willow Lake, S.D. “They are out grazing in the pasture like other sheep. In many ways I treat them like normal sheep; they got sheared just yesterday.”

Pommer became the shepherd of this special flock in the 1990s, while working as a researcher for an animal health company. The health company was evaluating the possibility to develop a respiratory vaccine for sheep.

“I told the owner of the company that I would need a clean flock of sheep in order to do my research,” says Pommer, explaining that a clean flock is one that has not been exposed to respiratory pathogens found in most sheep flocks..

To create a clean flock, lambs need to be deliv-ered via cesarean or caught at birth so they are not exposed to these pathogens from their mother or other sheep. “Because viruses and other pathogens don’t cross the placenta, if the lambs don’t come in contact with the ground or their mother, and are raised in isolation, you can keep them fairly clean.”

The flock has remained closed since the initial flock was developed in 1991.

As Pommer’s flock began to grow, the sheep in-dustry was on the decline. Soon the company he worked for, no longer saw profits in developing a pneumonia vaccine for sheep. Pommer purchased the flock shortly before he was laid off.

Fast forward more than 20 years: Today Pommer’s flock of 200 is utilized by scientists across the coun-try, primarily for human biomedical research.

“I found out that there was much more research demand in the human biomedical field than the agricultural field,” says Pommer, the owner and manager of OVIS, his sheep production business, and the executive director of Animal Regulatory Compliance at Hematech Inc.

Pommer explains that sheep are good candidates for biomedical research because of their size.

“They are an excellent model for experiments on fetal research, medical devices, surgical applications

and drug testing because they are similar to a hu-man in size and weight,” Pommer says. A sheep fe-tus is about the same size as a human fetus at birth, a sheep’s spine is about the same length as a human’s spine and they weigh about the same as a human.

Bench. Barn. Bedside.

Pommer’s sheep have been used to study fetal stress, fetal medical devices or surgical procedures dur-ing pregnancy; and to study drug delivery for the treatments for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. His sheep have also been used as models for heart surgical repair and biomedical devices such as stents and replacement valves.

“The biomedical aspect of my herd is what excites me most – it’s what drives me and makes me put on my boots each morning,” says Pommer. He appreci-ates the opportunity he has to contribute to future solutions to devastating diseases and medical condi-tions.

“Many scientists like to hide animal research. Ani-mal activists have done a good job of getting out

Those of us who do research with animals need to let the public know that what we are doing benefits society for both human and animals - whether it is a fetus with birth defects, a child born with spinal bifida or someone suffer-ing from Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s or improving animal health.”

He also takes into serious consid-eration the welfare of the animal in which research is being conducted.

When researchers contact Pommer to utilize his sheep, Pommer either ships the sheep to their research institu-tions or the researcher travels to South Dakota.

“Researchers like to travel to the sheep because they don’t have to set up a sheep facility – I can take care of the sheep right here,” says Pommer, of his research facility near Sioux Falls, S.D.

Pommer has access to surgical facilities with post and pre-operation rooms. All the researcher needs to do is buy a plane ticket, secure a hotel room and work with a local research hospital to schedule the research.

Caring for a newborn lambs that do not receive adequate antibodies from their mothers’ colostrum comes with its challenges. In fact newborn lambs that do not receive adequate antibody

protection usually are more susceptible to newborn diseases and death. In an attempt to provide a source of help-ful antibodies to the newborn lambs, Pommer has developed OVIShield, a management tool for use in the sheep industry.

“I thought, why not hyperimmunize my adult sheep to get a high titered, clean serum and mix this with pow-dered milk and give it to the lambs,” Pommer says of the process which begins by injecting multiple protective sheep vaccines into adult sheep; then collecting volumes of the blood and purifying the serum that is filled with the healthy antibodies.

The serum works and has been proven through several years of experimenta-tion both in his own flock, and other sheep flocks. Pommer has decided to share OVIShield product with other

sheep producers.

“I realized that sheep producers could use this as management tool to in-crease their lamb survival rate as well. With so many ewes having triplets or quads, there are many times when there just isn’t enough colostrum to go around,” Pommer says.

Working with the South Dakota Value Added Center, researchers at South Dakota State University and veterinar-ians at Pipestone Veterinary Clinic, Pommer has released OVIShield to sheep producers through Pipestone Veterinary Clinic. Pipestone Veteri-nary Clinic specializes in sheep and is the largest distributor of sheep health products in the country.

“It really works,” says Jay Bobb, large animal veterinarian at Pipestone Vet-erinary Clinic.

Bobb has specifically seen OVIShield’s effectiveness in flocks that have an E. coli outbreak.

“There is no approved E. coli vaccine for sheep. Jerry Pommer developed a way to get antibodies into sheep with-out vaccinating them. I’ve seen pro-ducers start their flock on OVIShield when they get into an E. coli outbreak and see almost instant results,” Bobb says.

He adds that producers who use it as a supplement to cholostrum also have good results.

“You look at the price of lambs these days – if you save one lamb using OV-IShield, you cover the cost of giving it to 50 lambs,” Bobb says.

After two devastating winters and a hail storm in 1996, Dwight and gwen-dolyn Kitzan knew it was time to re-

evaluate their registered sheep breeding stock operation.

The Island, S.D., couple established a new focus that would revolutionize their breeding

program and help their bottom line and that of their commercial sheep customers.

“We knew we needed to find a way to in-crease profitability and decrease input costs, not only for us, but for our customers,” says gwendolyn Kitzan, a fourth-generation sheep producer.

As breeders of Suffolk sheep, the Kitzans wanted a breed that would complement and work in a cross breeding program. Already maintaining meticulous breeding records, the couple, set out on a mission to develop a breeding program that would push produc-tion limits. What they have developed is a production-based Suffolk and SAMM breed-

SAMM’S Are bred tO prOduce And SurVIVe

SAMM stands for “South African meat merino.” Dwight learned about the breed while judging a sheep show at the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Canada.

“A Canadian sheep producer friend said, ‘You have to look at these.’ We were impressed by the tremen-dous rib capacity, meat production and livability of the breed,’” Kitzan says. “We did further search using various data bases and websites, along with private and university information.”

Exported to South Africa from germany in the 1930s, the SAMM is a large-framed, white-faced breed that was bred to slaughter early, with lambing percentages in excess of 150 percent and ewes that produce ample milk, while maintaining their body condition.

The Kitzans imported two rams in 1999. However, building a breeding flock became quite difficult due to the BSE outbreak which closed the borders. The couple’s only option was to travel to Australia, where the breed became established in 1996, and hand-select breeding stock from which they purchased semen to use for laparoscopic artificial insemination, or LAI, of their ewes.

“With the investment we have in obtaining SAMM genetics – indexing these sheep is critical for our

operation and information our customers request,” Kitzan says.

“When we got our first F1 lambs we increased our lamb crop by 40 percent and everything stayed the same – our expenses stayed the same but we had 40 percent more to sell,” Kitzan says.

Their efforts have paid off. Today, their flock weans a 180 to 190 percent lamb crop while decreasing input cost they also implement an accelerated lambing pro-gram – getting three lamb crops in two years by wean-ing March lambs early and lambing again in October.

Utilizing their records to select breeding stock is a team effort. With degrees in agri–business, business administration, finance and economics, gwen enjoys analyzing the data. She pulls the pedigrees for the top producing ewes and turns them over to Dwight and Joshua.

Dwight attended NDSU and has been researching sheep and livestock pedigrees since he started his own breeding flock as a high school 4-H and FFA member. He and their son, Joshua, 24, a recent animal science graduate of South Dakota State University, review the pedigree, discuss the possible mating, and then visually inspect the ewes to ensure they are the type, confirmation and style they are looking for to improve their flock.

When they introduced SAMMs to their operation in 1989, the Kitzans wanted to wait a few generations before they offered SAMM genetics to their custom-

“The reason we explored this new breed was our strong belief in the sheep industry. We knew our industry needed something (bred) that would increase our profit and the profit of our custom-ers,” Kitzan says. “In our parents’ and our lifetime, we had seen trends come and go. We didn’t want to offer this breed to other producers until we were

sure it would perform and improve their flock. As a breeding stock operation we feel an obligation to do things right. We’d never want to have a negative impact on someone’s operation.”

Their customers made it difficult to hold off on sales. As soon as their Ram-bouillet and Suffolk customers saw the SAMM rams, they wanted to purchase them.

“Producers would say, ‘this is the type of sheep I want and need.’ We would tell them that we wanted to give the breed more time but they would say they

wanted to use them,’” she says.

The Kitzans began selling SAMMs in 2001. Eleven years into the SAMM

Dwight and Gwen Kitzan both grew up raising sheep. They have operated a registered breeding operation since 1989 on their farm/ranch near Belle Fourche, S.D. In 1999 the couple began raising South African Meat Merinos (SAMM), and have realized dramatic production increases and input decreases since that time.

breeding program, the breed has proven itself time and time again. The Kitzans have SAMM customers in 30-plus states.

“When producers come back and say the SAMM are working in their large Western flocks to the Eastern farm flocks it makes us excited. We know we are mov-ing our breeding program in the right direction,” she says.

future Of KItzAn Sheep

Today, Kitzan Sheep encompasses two families: Dwight and gwendolyn, and as of June 2012, Joshua and Heather Jons Kitzan. Joshua and Heather, also a SDSU graduate, will farm and ranch only 4.5 miles from Dwight and gwendolyn. The two operations

will act independently, yet cooperatively as they ex-pand they breeding operations.

“Dwight and I are very proud that Joshua and Heather wish to stay in production agriculture. With the world needing more food and fiber, we need more young agriculturists ready to take on the challenge,” Kitzan says.

CANNINg, S.D. – In football or baseball, Jim Korkow, at 70, would be the equivalent of a great coach or trainer who has had athletes selected for every national all-star team since 1959.

But his sport is rodeo, his athletes are bulls and horses, and he’s not quite convinced that what goes on between him and his animals is anything like coaching.

“More like family,” he muses. “There’s quite a lot of pride when I see them picked, and then to get there and see them do well. And then after they’ve competed, hav-ing cowboys or contractors come by and give you a pat

Jim Korkow’s family raises its rodeo stock in the rugged Medicine Creek valley south of Blunt, S.D., near Canning.

on the back. It’s kind of like watching your kid at the state tournament make the buzzer-beating basket or blocking the shot.”

There are some important differences; what Jim Korkow’s athletes toss through the air are cowboys.

There is plenty of memorabilia in Jim Korkow’s big old ranchhouse to bear that out – photos of perplexed cowboys, along with buckles and saddles and saddle gear from various rodeos, and even, on one wall, the enormous, stuffed black head of a bull.

“His name was Pat. He was infamous. The cowboys all hated him,” Jim Korkow says fondly. “He kind of had his way. He liked to punch them around a little bit.”

There’s also a photo of Jim Korkow in his younger days from when he worked as a rodeo bull fighter, doing what he could to keep cowboys safe from the

likes of Pat.

Ingredients of champions: Athleticism and attitude

Cowboys pick the animals they want to ride in the National Finals Rodeo each year, and each year without fail they seem to pick some of the Korkow stock – every year since the National Finals Rodeo began in 1959.

“I drove a truck with bucking horses and bulls in it down in ’59,” Jim Korkow recalls.

And that was because Jim Korkow’s father, Ervin, had already started the family building its rodeo brand – “The brand that bucks,” as the Korkows like to say.

Now, as his father did before him, and as his son, T.J., will do after him, Jim Korkow raises bulls and horses on the big grassy hills along Medicine Creek

near a wide spot in the road called Canning. Jim Korkow uses the brand his father started, the Anchor K.

“Those colts in my corral, they’re seventh or eighth generation. We started breeding bucking studs on to bucking mare to get a bucking horse colt in the 1950s,” he says.

The Korkows supply stock for the saddle broncs, bullrid-ing and bareback events. It’s interesting work – espe-cially raising bulls, Korkow said.

“They’ve all got attitudes and personalities. You learn which ones are OK to be around and which ones are going to try and hook you,” he says.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing in rodeo stock.

“That’s what we’re after – athleticism and attitude,” Jim Korkow says.

The Korkows have stock entered in about 52 events each year. In a year’s time the ranch is probably working with 120 to 150 bulls and roughly 350 horses.

Family history

And the family’s involvement in rodeo all started, in a manner of speaking, because Erv Korkow had five sisters – Agnes, Esther, Leona, Ruth, and Adeline. They turned some heads. Cowboys seemed to drift over to Erv’s par-ents’ house on Sunday afternoons. For some reason, they all felt like showing what they could do on horseback if there was a bucking bronc around.

Later, in 1947, Erv Korkow organized the first rodeo of his career, just up the river valley in Blunt.

“They put together an arena on the south side of Blunt. It didn’t cost so much to get in. It was a dollar a carload, I recall.”

Jim Korkow, about head-high to his daddy’s stirrup, was involved.

“I got to help trail the horses to town,” he remembers. “I was 6 years old. I got to ride in the pickup, but I was there.”

He also remembers that the neighbors parked a lot of cars outside the rodeo grounds just to cram as many people as they could into a limited number of automo-

biles in order to get as much mileage as they could out of those hard-earned dollars.

In addition to rodeo, the Korkows’ business includes a trucking operation – another enterprise that Erv Korkow started.

“My father was kind of a slave driver and he damn sure believed in child labor. He came and got me out of school in the eighth grade because he needed a truck driver. He sent me all by myself with a truckload of cattle down to Sioux City, Iowa,” Jim Korkow remem-bers.

His father didn’t have to twist his arm. Later, though he rode for the rodeo team at South Dakota State Uni-versity, Jim Korkow said he could scarcely hear a truck go by without wishing he was in it, hauling cattle to somewhere.

Later, Jim Korkow married his high school sweetheart, the former Carol Junkman, from Blunt. Their daughter, Faith Korkow, lives in Pierre. Misty and her husband, Matt Clair, live on the ranch by Canning. Their son, T.J.

and his wife, Brienna, live on the ranch.

growing up, the children were all involved in rodeo. They spent their summers in a motor home.

That was difficult, Carol Korkow said, but the payoff was in helping build the sport of rodeo.

“Our brand, the Anchor K, is known across the rodeo world,” she said. “Cowboys know the Korkow stock and they know that if they draw Korkow stock at a rodeo, they’ve got a chance to win money.”

Rodeo school

Longtime radio announcer Jim Thompson of Spearfish bears that out.

“The Anchor K brand is honored by rodeo cowboys, not just for the great three generations of tradition, but also for the consistency of their bucking stock and the dedication Korkows have for producing quality horses

and bulls. They know that rodeo can only survive if its athletes do, both animals and cowboys,” Thompson said. “I loved to announce Korkows’ rodeos. I knew that it was ‘just’ rodeo -- not any glamour or glitz, but just pure cowboy. Ride in the flag, sing the anthem…start bucking bareback horses.”

Nowadays, the Korkows also work to pass their love of rodeo on to young people by operating a rodeo school. It happens the end of April each year, attracting about 30 young rodeo athletes from a five-state area.

“We’ve got a hand in trying to keep the Old West alive, you might say,” Jim Korkow says. “I have professional instructors come in every year to teach kids the right way to do this thing safely.”

They’ll be at it again April 27-29 at the Anchor K Ranch near Canning.

Jim Korkow’s family raises its rodeo stock in the rugged Medi-cine Creek valley south of Blunt, S.D., near Canning.
