Page 1 Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term 25 May 2018 [email protected] Dear Parents, Thank you for your support for our Open Morning on Saturday. We had a lovely morning, the Sun shone and the children, as always, represented their school brilliantly. I hope that everyone managed to get home in time for the Royal Wedding. For the first time since I joined the school, we have children already registered for Reception more than a year in advance which is exciting and a reminder that if your son or daughter is intending to join us it may be worth registering in plenty of time. The week has flown by and Wednesday was a highlight with three concerts! We started with the Nursery children who loved sharing all they have learnt in music with their parents and the hall was filled with a joyful cacophony of young voices. After lunch it was the turn of the Pre-Prep children who amazed us all. Not only did they sing beautifully as a choir but many children sang and played solos. It was a very moving occasion and we were all so proud of the children. The evening soiree was the turn of the older children and there were some musical highlights. There is genuine excellence in our musical provision here and the quality of the performances was tremendous. I would like to thank the children for their performances, Mrs Goodson and the peripatetic music teachers for the quality of their work and the enthusiasm they instil in their young charges and you, their parents for your support for the children and their practice. On Thursday afternoon we welcomed our new Reception children to school for their first big event – our Teddy Bears’ Picnic! This has become an annual tradition now and it is lovely to watch our current Reception children and their parents welcoming the new Reception children into the school. A lovely time was had by all. Today, Year 4 are visiting Pulborough Brooks and I am at a Governors’ meeting! I am sure that they will all have a wonderful time. Many congratulations to our U9 girls’ team, Amelia, Grace, Beth and Yasmin who won the Dorset House Athletics meeting on Wednesday! A big thank you to Thomas S, Oscar G and Alex W all in Year 4, who took part in a 5KM run, The Bubble Rush 2018, at Hove Park on Sunday morning to help raise money for the Demelza Children’s Hospice, which cares for children with limited lives. The boys did amazingly well completing the course and having a brilliant time making a difference to the lives of others raising over £100. I am very pleased to be able to share a new direction for the teaching of languages at LPW. Whilst continuing with the study of Latin and French, the children in Year 7 next year will all study a second modern foreign language. As part of their weekly timetable, they will have one afternoon a week at Lancing College where they will be taught German and Spanish by College teachers. They will also have their games lesson there using the superb College facilities. Optional Mandarin or Coding as after-school clubs will complete the afternoon. @LancingPrepWthg @LancingPrepWorthing Lancing College Preparatory School at Worthing

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your support for our Open Morning on Saturday. We had a lovely morning, the Sun

shone and the children, as always, represented their school brilliantly. I hope that everyone

managed to get home in time for the Royal Wedding. For the first time since I joined the school, we

have children already registered for Reception more than a year in advance which is exciting and a

reminder that if your son or daughter is intending to join us it may be worth registering in plenty of

time.

The week has flown by and Wednesday was a highlight with three concerts! We started with the

Nursery children who loved sharing all they have learnt in music with their parents and the hall

was filled with a joyful cacophony of young voices. After lunch it was the turn of the Pre-Prep

children who amazed us all. Not only did they sing beautifully as a choir but many children sang

and played solos. It was a very moving occasion and we were all so proud of the children. The

evening soiree was the turn of the older children and there were some musical highlights. There is

genuine excellence in our musical provision here and the quality of the performances was

tremendous. I would like to thank the children for their performances, Mrs Goodson and the

peripatetic music teachers for the quality of their work and the enthusiasm they instil in their young

charges and you, their parents for your support for the children and their practice.

On Thursday afternoon we welcomed our new Reception children to school for their first big event

– our Teddy Bears’ Picnic! This has become an annual tradition now and it is lovely to watch our

current Reception children and their parents welcoming the new Reception children into the school.

A lovely time was had by all.

Today, Year 4 are visiting Pulborough Brooks and I am at a Governors’ meeting! I am sure that they

will all have a wonderful time.

Many congratulations to our U9 girls’ team, Amelia, Grace, Beth and Yasmin who won the Dorset

House Athletics meeting on Wednesday! A big thank you to Thomas S, Oscar G and Alex W all in

Year 4, who took part in a 5KM run, The Bubble Rush 2018, at Hove Park on Sunday morning to

help raise money for the Demelza Children’s Hospice, which cares for children with limited lives.

The boys did amazingly well completing the course and having a brilliant time making a difference

to the lives of others raising over £100.

I am very pleased to be able to share a new direction for the teaching of languages at LPW. Whilst

continuing with the study of Latin and French, the children in Year 7 next year will all study a

second modern foreign language. As part of their weekly timetable, they will have one afternoon a

week at Lancing College where they will be taught German and Spanish by College teachers. They

will also have their games lesson there using the superb College facilities. Optional Mandarin or

Coding as after-school clubs will complete the afternoon.

After half term I would be very grateful if you could all remember our neighbours when parking

outside the school. We had a problem on Wednesday with a local resident who couldn’t get her car

out of the drive to run an urgent errand. Thank you.

As you may know, Sir Roger Bannister died in March of this year aged 88 and shortly before his

death, had replied to letters sent to him by our Year 6 children. His inspirational response was read

out in assembly and the children were thrilled that he had replied. To celebrate his life we are hold-

ing a new event, The Bannister Run, which will take place for the senior Prep children on Monday 4

June during our PE session in the afternoon. The children will run 5 laps around the field and each

child has been given a sponsorship form to collect money for the 4 house charities: Great Ormond

Street Hospital (Britons), Open Arms Malawi (Normans), British Red Cross (Celts) and The Snow-

drop Trust (Saxons). There will be a prize for the child that raises the most money. We hope you will

support this important event. The sponsorship money should be returned by 11 June. I am delighted

that Misha, in Year 4, is determined to make a difference too and is working on a second Bannister

Run for the younger Prep children. We will inform you about that after half term.

Next half term is going to be busy and exciting and there will be much to celebrate but in the mean-

time, my thanks to the LPWA for the rather lovely ‘Frozen Friday’ idea for this evening and my

good wishes to you all for the Bank Holiday weekend and half term.

Best wishes,

MUSIC & DRAMA

Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Over the holidays all students from year 3-8 need to practice the first half of Joseph up to the end of the

Song of the King. We have made such fantastic progress in class but this needs to be reinforced over the

coming weeks with practice at home wherever possible. The lyrics to all the songs covered so far are

attached below so that students can continue all their good work at home practicing the songs. The back-

ing tracks for these can be found by following the link and entering the password as follows:

www.edmodo.com password: ziqx5x, alternatively enjoy singing along to the video on YouTube -

Costumes Year 3-8

The children will need the following costumes and we would be very grateful if you could provide them

with:

Smart plain blue jeans without rips, logos or other markings

A single colour t-shirt – this can be plain red/blue/orange/yellow/green/purple. It is essential that the t-

shirt is completely plain without any logos or pictures

Plain white pumps or trainers, again without logos or additional colours

It would be very helpful if the costume could be ready immediately after the May half term with all

items of clothing individually named and brought to school in a clearly named and robust plastic bag. If

you have any problems with this costume please contact Mrs Goodson via email

U9 Track Athletics Meet at Dorset House

On Tuesday, a team of four U9 girls and a team of four U9 boys took part in

an athletics meet. Grace W and Alex W took on the hurdles which is an

event that we haven’t done a lot of. They both came 3rd in the heats for their

respective races. Sophia B and Oscar G took on the 600m. Sophia was quick

off the start line creating a great lead which she continued to extend as the

race progressed, finishing 1st. Oscar G tried really hard in his race, he started

well but struggled to maintain the pace. Beth K and Sebastian G took part in

the 75m sprint. Beth was fantastic—she won her heat then went on to win

the final too.

Sebastian was running up an age group; the boys were all much bigger than

him but he tried his absolute best in the heats and challenged them to the

line. Yasmin G and Joseph M took on the 200m and won their respective

heats and finals!

The girls’ relay team were brilliant; they linked together well winning their

heat and then coming 2nd in the final. The boys’ relay team tried really hard

in a closely contested race coming 3rd in their heat. Handing over the baton

is an area we need to work on with both teams. The girls won overall. They

all tried their hardest and performed brilliantly, with great support for each other. We were

extremely proud of them all. Thank you to the parents who came to support us.

Cricket

First team 106 for 8 v Great Ballard 109 for 7 Lost by 3 runs

A hugely entertaining and exciting afternoon of cricket was played on Wednesday between two

very good cricket teams. LPW lost the toss again, and were put into bat. Ozzy R scored a rapid 24

as well as a very impressive 36 not out by George H-H allowed the First team to post a respectable

score. LPW again bowled very well, taking wickets at important times, particularly Ethan F who

spun the ball and bamboozled their batsman. The game went into the final over with Great Ballard

needing 8 to win. They won the game with a four off the last ball of the match to win by the

tightest of margins. A fantastic afternoon and I was hugely proud of the effort by all the boys

involved. Very well done. Player of the match: George H-H.

Rounders U11 v Great Ballard Won 19 – 14

This was the first game the girls had played as a team and they were brilliant. They began fielding

and having taken on board all the tactical things we had spoken about, they put this into practice.

There was wonderful throwing from Sophie W as back stop to Emma on 2nd post who was backed

up well by Nerea and Anna. We got a few of the Great Ballard girls out at different posts. When we

went into bat we did really well, the batting practice on Monday helped a lot. The half time score

was 9½ - 8 to us. In the second inning, we continued fielding well and managed to stop Great Bal-

lard scoring many rounders. Our batting continued to go well, Anna scoring some cracking round-

ers. A great game played by all the girls. Thank you to the parents who came to support us.

Parents/Teachers v Pupils Rounders

On Saturday at Open Morning, the parents and teachers took on the pupils in a game of rounders.

The parents and teachers were winning comfortably until Miss Standing (the Umpire) decided to

favour the pupils and started giving all of the decisions in their favour. There were some great per-

formances. Mr Went scored a whole rounder for the parents team, as did Mr Le. Grace W scored a

whole rounder for the pupils and so did Brandon L. It was a lovely morning, but the pupils eventu-

ally won 14-13 with a little bit of help from Miss Standing! A big thank you to those who gave up

their time to come along and play.

Tennis Tournament

On Friday, a team of four boys from Years 7 and 8 went to Bede’s to play in a tournament. The

tournament consisted of groups to qualify for the knockout stages. Having got to the semi-finals

stage last year, we went in to this tournament with high hopes. We had a really good team and they

played their very best but unfortunately, were placed in a very tough and small group. This meant

we only had two matches, unlike other groups. We narrowly lost the first match to Chailey School

over two legs. Overall, they beat us 19-18. In the second match, we played one of the many Bede’s

teams that had been entered. Once again, we came very close to beating them and narrowly led at

one point, but they got the better of us in the end and won. We found out later on that this had

knocked us out of the competition. The boys also played some touch tennis and this was very en-

joyable as it was a different format of the game. Thanks to the boys who gave up their time to come

along. I’m looking forward to more tennis events in the future because we have some very talented

tennis players here at LPW.

Mr Richards

Cricket Colts v Great Ballard

Our Colts continued their fantastic winning run by beating Great Ballard on Wednesday. Cal N put

Great Ballard into bat when he won the toss. The hosts reached 94-6 from their 15 overs. Louis B

was the pick of the bowlers with the first 3 wickets. He bowled exceptionally well and should be

very proud of his performance. Huxley also took a wicket with a Sam G catch behind the stumps.

Marley also took a wicket with some fine bowling. Sam continued his great display as wicketkeeper

with a run out from the throw of Charlie G. After a short match tea, LPW went into bat. The open-

ers, Cal and Will both retired after giving Great Ballard’s bowlers a few problems. Cal reached 27

not out and Will was on 15 not out. Sam continued their good start getting 10 not out before Harry,

Marley and Louis all helped see LPW to another impressive win. Player of the Match was Louis for

his bowling performance and for seeing through the win with the bat. Well done to all involved.

I’m looking forward to more games after half term.

Joseph's Dream

Choir Joseph's coat annoyed his brothers

Brothers But what makes us mad

Are the things that Joseph tells us of the

Dreams he's often had

Joseph I dreamed that in the fields one day (Choir: La, la, la…)

The corn gave me a sign

Your eleven sheaves of corn

All turned and bowed to mine

My sheaf was quite a sight to see

A golden sheaf and tall

Yours were green and second-rate

And really rather small

Brothers Small! This is not the kind of thing

We brothers like to hear

It seems to us that Joseph and his

Dreams should disappear

Joseph I dreamed I saw eleven stars (Choir: La, la, la…)

The sun the moon and sky

Bowing down before my star,

It made me wonder why

Could it be that I was born

For higher things than you?

A post in someone's government

Page 20: Lancing College Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term ......I am very pleased to be able to share a new direction for the teaching of languages at LPW. Whilst continuing with the study of

A ministry or two

Brothers The dreams of our dear brother are

The decade's biggest yawn

His talk of stars and golden sheaves

Is just a load of corn

Not only is he tactless but

He's also rather dim

For there's eleven of us and

There's only one of him

The dreams of course will not come true

That is, we think they won't come true

That is, we hope they won't come true

What if he's right all along?

The dreams are more than crystal clear

The writing on the wall

Means that Joseph some day soon

Will rise above us all

The accuracy of the dreams

We brothers do not know

But one thing we are sure about;

The dreamer, (choir: dreamer),

dreamer, (choir: dreamer), All: dreamer, dreamer has to go!

Poor, Poor Joseph

Choir: Next day, far from home,

the brothers planned the repulsive crime

Brothers: Let us grab him now, do him in, while we've got the time

Choir: This they did and made the most of it

Tore his coat and flung him in a pit

Page 21: Lancing College Weekly Broadsheet Summer Term ......I am very pleased to be able to share a new direction for the teaching of languages at LPW. Whilst continuing with the study of

Brothers: Let us leave him here, all alone, and he's bound to die

Choir: When some Ishmaelites, a hairy crew, came riding by

In a flash the brothers changed their plan

Brothers: We need cash! Let's sell him if we can

Choir: Poor poor Joseph, what'cha gonna do?

Things look bad for you, hey, what'cha gonna do?

Poor poor Joseph, what'cha gonna do?

Things look bad for you, hey, what'cha gonna do?

Brothers: Could you use a slave, you hairy bunch of Ishmaelites?

Young, strong, well-behaved,

going cheap and he reads and writes

Choir: In a trice the dirty deed was done

Silver coins for Jacob's favorite son

Then the Ishmaelites galloped off with a slave in tow

Off to Egypt where Joseph was not too keen to go

It wouldn't be a picnic he could tell

Joseph: I don't speak Egyptian very well

Choir: Joseph's brothers tore his precious multi-colored coat

Having ripped it up, they next attacked a passing goat

Soon the wretched creature was no more

They dipped his coat in blood and guts and gore

All Oh now brothers, how low can you stoop?

You make a sordid group, hey, how low can you stoop?

Poor poor Joseph, sold to be a slave

Situation's grave, hey, sold to be a slave

There's One More Angel in Heaven

Whistling intro

Judah: Father, we've something to tell you, a story of our time

A tragic but inspiring tale of manhood in its prime

You know you had a dozen sons

well now that's not quite true

But feel no sorrow, do not grieve, he would not want you to

Brothers/(Choir) : There's one more angel in Heaven (ah….)

There's one more star in the sky (ah….)

Joseph we'll never forget you (ah….)

It's tough but we're gonna get by

There's one less place at our table (ah….)

There's one more tear in my eye (ah….)

But Joseph the things that you stood for (ah….)Levi: Like -- er, truth and light never die

Simeon: When I think of his last great battle

A lump comes to my throat

It takes a man who knows not fear

To wrestle with a goat

Brothers: His blood-stained coat is tribute to his final sacrifice

His body may be past its peak but his soul's in paradise

Brothers/(Choir) : There's one more angel in Heaven (ah….)

There's one more star in the sky (ah….)

Joseph we'll never forget you (ah….)

Brothers: Carve his name with pride and courage

Gad: Let no tear be shed

If he had not laid down his life we all would now be dead

Close Every Door To Me

Joesph: Close every door to me, hide all the world from me

Bar all the windows and shut out the light

Do what you want with me, hate me and laugh at me

Darken my daytime and torture my night

If my life were important I would ask will I live or die

But I know the answers lie far from this world

Close every door to me, keep those I love from me

Children of Israel are never alone

For I know I shall find my own peace of mind

For I have been promised a land of my own

Choir Close every door to me, keep those I love from me

Children of Israel are never alone

La, la, la etc.

Joseph: Just give me a number instead of my name

Forget all about me and let me decay

I do not matter, I'm only one person

Destroy me completely then throw me away

were two very frightened men

Baker and Butler: We don't think that we will ever see the light of day again

Hey Joseph! Help us if you can

We've had dreams that we don't understand

Butler: There I was standing in front of a vine

I picked some grapes and I crushed them for wine

I gave it to Pharaoh who drank from my cup

I tried to interpret but I had to give up

Joseph: You will soon be free, my friend, so do not worry any more

The king will let you out of here,

you'll buttle as you did before

Singing Narrators 1&2: Next the baker rose to tell his dream

Hoping it would have a similar theme

Baker: There I was standing with baskets of bread

High in the sky I saw birds overhead

Who flew to the baskets and ate every slice

Give me the message -- like his would be nice

Joseph: Sad to say your dream is not the kind of dream I'd like to get

Pharaoh has it in for you, your execution date is set

Don't rely on all I say I saw

It's just that I have not been wrong before

Narrators and Choir: Go Go Jo x 4

Pharaoh's Dream Explained

Joseph: Seven years of bumper crops are on their way Choir:

Years of plenty, endless wheat and tons of hay

Your farms will boom, there won't be room

To store the surplus food you grow

After that, the future doesn't look so bright Ba, ba, baas….

Egypt's luck will change completely overnight Ba, ba, baas….

And famine's hand will stalk the land oo-ee-=oo

With food an all-time low Food an all time low

All: Noble king, there is no doubt Noble king, there is no doubt

What your dream is all about What your dream is all about

Joseph: All these things you saw in your pyjamas

Are a long-range forecast for your farmers

And I'm sure it's crossed your mind Ah….

What it is you have to find Ah….

Find a man to lead you through the famine Ah…

With a flair for economic planning Ah…

The Brothers Come to Egypt/Grovel

Choir: So back in Canaan the future looked rough

Joseph's family were finding it tough

Brothers: For the famine has caught us unprepared

We are thin, we are ill, we are getting scared

Reuben: It's enough to make anyone weep

Simeon: We are down to our very last sheep

Benjamin: We will starve if we hang around here

Judah: And in Egypt there's food going spare

Levi: They've got corn, they've got meat,

they've got food and drinks

Brothers: And if we have the time we could see the Sphinx

Choir: So they finally decided to go

Brothers: Here we go!

Choir: Off to Egypt to see brother Joe!

Choir: So they all lay before Joseph's feet

Brothers: Mighty prince, give us something to eat!

Choir: Joseph found it a strain not to laugh because

Not a brother among them knew who he was

Joseph: I shall now take them all for a ride

Choir: La, la, las….

Joseph: I dreamed that in the fields one day, the corn gave me a sign

Your eleven sheaves of corn all turned and bowed to mine

I dreamed I saw eleven stars, the sun and moon and sky

Bowing down before my star -- and now I realize why

Joseph: How do I know where you come from? You could be spies

Brothers: NO!!!

Joseph: Telling me that you are hungry -- that could be lies

How do I know who you are?

Why do you think I should help you? Would you help me?

Brothers: YES!

Joseph: Why on earth should I believe you? I've no guarantee

Brothers: Grovel, grovel, cringe, bow, stoop, fall

Worship, worship, beg, kneel, sponge, crawl

Brothers/Choir: Grovel, (grovel) grovel, (grovel) cringe, bow, (grovel ) , stoop, fall, (grovel )

Brothers: Honesty's our middle name

Isaacher: Life is slowly ebbing from us, hope's almost gone

Reuben: It's getting very hard to see us from sideways on

Brothers/Choir: Grovel, (grovel) grovel, (grovel) cringe, bow, (grovel ) , stoop, fall, (grovel )

Worship, (grovel) , worship,(grovel) , beg, kneel, (grovel), sponge, crawl (grovel)

Worship, worship, beg, kneel, sponge, crawl

Choir: Grovel, grovel, grovel, grovel

Grovel, grovel, grovel, grovel

Choir: Joseph handed them sackloads of food

And they grovelled with base gratitude

Then, unseen, Joseph nipped out around the back

And planted a cup in young Benjamin's sack

When the brothers were ready to go

Joseph turned to them all with a terrible stare and said

No! No! No! No! No!
