SAINT JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH

LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA October 22, 2017

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In His Image

Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,

After having parable after parable directed against them for their hard-heartedness, the chief priests and elders of the people seek to trap Jesus and discredit him in front of the crowds. Jesus’ parables of the two sons, the tenant farmers of the vineyard, and those invited to the banquet who refused to come were each directed at the religious leaders to expose their resistance to God’s kingdom and revelation through Je-sus. They challenge us also on being Intentional Disciples of the Lord and not just Catholic or Christian in name only.

Jesus, the Divine Teacher, in today’s gospel, not only avoids the trap set by the religious leaders, but he uses their trap to reveal an important gospel truth: render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and unto God what is God’s. The trick ques-tion about the tax attempted to put Jesus in the impossible middle by which he would offend either the Romans or the Jews. It presents the challenge faced by Christians living in the world, but living by the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. This conflict we face every day as some values of society are in direct conflict or opposition to God’s Kingdom. When ques-tioned about the appropriateness of paying taxes to Caesar, Jesus responded with an answer that gives us two lessons. To whom we are responsible is rooted in the Image.

First, Jesus teaches the Christian responsibility of obeying legitimate civil authority. Although unpopular, the tax to Cae-sar derived from the authority Caesar had as emperor or king, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar.” The coin for the tax bore Caesar’s image. We, too, need to obey the legitimate laws of our nation, and in a democracy we have the power to shape those laws through voting in elections. Therefore, we need to vote guided by the Gospel values we profess.

The Pharisees’ question really focused on what we owe to Caesar—civil authority, and Jesus answered that. Then Jesus took it one, more expansive step further. What do we owe to God? By referring to the image on the coin and then turning to what we owe the Lord, Jesus declared that since we are cre-ated in the IMAGE of God, we owe God our whole selves.

One area where these two realms intersect is religious liberty. Archbishop Chaput has exhorted us: “Religious liberty is a foundational right. It’s necessary for a good society. . . It’s not an end in itself. In the end, we defend religious liberty in order to live the deeper freedom that is discipleship in Jesus Christ. What good is religious freedom, consecrated in the law, if we don’t then use that freedom to seek God with our whole mind and soul and strength?” Religious liberty opens the door that we might become Intentional Disciples. With that freedom, may we give to God what is God’s!

Renewal at Saint Joseph’s through Intentional Discipleship

THRESHOLDS OF CONVERSION: Because our relation-ship with God is a process of ongoing conversion and responding more and more faithfully to his invitation to live in his friendship, understanding the steps or thresh-olds of conversion both helps us progress, as well as understand the best way to help others come to know, love and follow Jesus. People’s needs are different de-pending on the threshold in which they are.

Trust – before a person will receive anything from an-

other, there needs to be trust. Trust recognizes that the person is cared for and respected.

Curiosity - this stage involves awakening the possibility

that the person can have a relationship with God/Jesus, tapping into their natural desire or hunger for God. Asking questions, not catechizing, awakens spiritual curiosity.

Openness - a tentative, but passive openness to God and

to spiritual change. Transitioning from curiosity to open-ness can be the most difficult, for it involves the lowering of defenses and overcoming fear to acknowledgement that God can be part of their life.

Seeking - an active, intentional exploring the possibility of

a relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church.

Intentional Discipleship - “This conversion is the

acceptance of a personal relationship with Christ, a sincere adherence to him, and a willingness to conform one’s life to his. Conversion to Christ involves making a genuine commitment to him and a personal decision to follow him as his disciple.” (National Directory for Catechesis, p. 47, 48)

SAINT JOSEPH HOSTS ALPHA: ALPHA is an opportunity for persons to gather weekly in the context of friendship, a meal, a video presentation, and conversation to come to know God through Jesus Christ. Alpha is currently running thru December 13

th every Wednesday evening

6:30 - 8:45pm and will be offer each year. If you are in-terested call the rectory, 717-397-6921 or email Mary Ellen at [email protected].

SMALL FAITH SHARING GROUPS: These small groups gather to cultivate the growth of faith and discipleship. With Scott Hahn’s book, “The Lambs Supper,” as the basis for sharing, groups meet the following days and times: Sunday, 3:00pm, Monday; 7:00pm; Wednesday, 7:00pm, Thursday, 7:00pm. If you are interested call the rectory, 717-397-6921 or email Mary Ellen at [email protected] for more information.

BECOME A PERPETUAL ADORER: Sign up for 1 hour a week as a perpetual adorer in our Adoration Chapel open 24 hours a day, except while Mass is celebrated, 7 days a week, all year long.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IS AROUND THE CORNER
