How Often Do You Hear about the Good Stuff? --A local man continues to go out of his way to help Easterseals program participants— The Easterseals Day Program in Lakewood frequently visits the Winding River Ice Rink in Toms River for group outings. Peter Martin works at the rink and has become a trusted friend with staff. Peter is always friendly and goes out of his way to greet program participants, which unfortunately isn’t always the case in the community, explained Easterseals staff members. More than an accommodating employee, he has proven himself a good samaritan on two specific occasions. On Tuesdays each week, the Lakewood staff and program participants head to the rink for lunch. On one Tuesday last Oct., Peter added lifesaver to his list of characteristics by the time he clocked out of his shift. The Easterseals program participants were beginning their lunches when one of them started to choke. She was quickly losing consciousness and the staff needed more help. Peter, center, with Easterseals NJ program participants. “Without even asking, Peter came right over to help out!” said Oprah Fisher, staff member of the Lakewood location. Peter, who likely had previously worked in an emergency room, started to perform the heimlich while Oprah worked to get the food out of her mouth. The woman was starting to turn blue, when Oprah finally dislodged the food. Peter ran to get medical equipment while they waited for the ambulance. By the time the ambulance arrived, she had regained her color and started feeling better. “If we had waited for the ambulance, she would have been gone!” said Oprah.

Peterstayedbythewoman’ssidetheentiretimeandcontinuedtoaskhowshewasafterward.TheLakewoodstaffputtogetheranicecardandgaveittoPeterasathankyouforhislifesavingactions.Butthatisn’tallthatPeterhasdonefortheEastersealsgroup.AnotherincidenttookplaceonMarch8th,2016attherinkwherealsoPeterassistedDonna,alongtimeEastersealsprogramparticipants,whowashavingseverechestpains.“PetercamerightuptoDonnaoncehewastold911wascalled,”saidJudithRanno,anotherEastersealsstaffmember.“Hewasaskingalltherightquestionstoseehowseverethiswasorcouldbe.”“WithouthesitationPeterisalwaysrightthere,”Judithexplained.“Itisveryreassuringknowingheisaroundwithsomemedicalbackgroundwhiletheyvisittherink.”“ThisincidentcouldhavegonebadveryfastwithDonna’sage,butPeterwasrighttheremakingthefive-minutewaitfortheEMTverysafe,”Judithsaid.Eventhoughthisincidentendedupnotbeingextremelysevere,Peter’shelpmadeahugedifference.JudithsharedtheadmirationoftheEastersealsstaffbysaying,“itisveryrefreshingtohavesomeonelikePeterinourcommunity!”EastersealsNewJerseyispresentingPeterwithacertificatetothankhimforhisinvaluableserviceinApril.Ourgratitudeandappreciationgoeswaybeyondthiscertificatehowever,andwecan’tthankPeterenoughforhislifesavingactions.
