t always amazes me how peo-ple come through for us with their stories and interests in life on and around the lake.

But it’s just plain fun showing off what our unique lake commu-nity has going on!

I keep having nightmares about “running out of stories,” but we keep finding so many interesting people and so many things to write about, well, all we can say is a great big “Thanks!” for letting us share.

That’s what I truly love about Lakeside Living, it’s our chance to showcase all the “good stuff ” we have.

And with many thanks in mind, I think this June issue is packed with things you’ll love knowing about!

Like artist Denise Lyon, whose intricate clay creations are almost unbelievable and how she finds inspiration for her work.

You’ll be introduced to the new offerings of delicious fare at the J&S Country Store Deli in Cropwell, a handy place with lots to choose from to stop in for ready made “supplies” on your way to the water.

You’ll seee some of photographer Latrelle Grayson’s sunrise and sunset “shoots,” including the one above, preserving their beauty one day at a time.

Then there’s a peek inside Bridges’ Power Sports for the latest in boats and water toys and guess what else?

Riverside has a new boat ride-dinner cruise experience going on for those times when you need a special outing on the water.

You’ll meet Justin Hogeland. He and his wife settled on the lake and now call it home, and Hogeland, who is a physical therapist and personal trainer, even holds fitness classes at their home on the water. What a great place to work out! And I can tell you from experience, he’s good!

I bring you recipes based on fruit, let’s face it, we’re all going

crazy hitting all the fresh produce spots that dot our back roads and by ways.

Our kayaker takes a detour from the lake to a gorgeous spot in North Carolina, on the Nantahala River, where you can hone your whitewater skills after practicing on the waters of Logan Martin.

So OK, welcome to another issue of Lakeside Living and let summertime begin!

Enjoy!

t’s been almost a year since I paddled down the Nantahala River Gorge in North Carolina, but there I was, heart pounding, preparing to go yet another time down the Nantahala Falls.

I returned to the “Nanty” after finding out that Bob “Shep” Shepard, who is the trip coordinator for the Birmingham Canoe Club, was leading a trip to the popular whitewater des-tination.

Bob, who works with University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital’s media relations, is an open boater, but we won’t hold that against him. He paddles canoes instead of kayaks.

“I’ve been in a kayak, but I prefer an open canoe,” said the 55-year-old whitewater canoeist. “Part of it is that I’m a tad claustrophobic, and I don’t like being contained in a small kayak. But mostly it’s because I love canoes. They are a con-nection to our country’s early history, when rivers were the highways to the frontier and beyond to the interior of the con-tinent. There is an elegance and beauty to a canoe.”

I had talked with Bob, who is from McCalla, off and on for many years over the telephone at UAB Hospital for news stories, but we never met face-to-face until we met on a white-water river. It was a real surprise to learn he paddled and was

Nantahala River Gorge.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This month Lakeside writer David Atchison takes a detour from his series about kayaking around Lake Logan Martin for a whitewater adventure on the Nantahala River. It’s a change of pace we think you’ll enjoy.

active with the BCC. It’s like I’ve always said, you never know who you are going to

see or meet out on the river or lake.“The Nantahala is my favorite river to run,” Bob said. “The

gorge is glorious and it’s a challenging, yet not overly daunting river. I usually try to lead a trip there in spring and fall, and then get back a couple of times in the summer when possible.”

Bob recalled his first trip down the Nanty.“I turned over four times,” he said. “Fortunately, that doesn’t

happen much anymore. I’m usually tired and sore when headed home on a Sunday afternoon after a weekend at the Nanty, but I sure feel better for having been there.”

Mark Garner, 50, president of the Birmingham Canoe Club, said some paddlers call the Nanty their “happy place.”

“It’s a beautiful part of the country,” Mark said. “The water is dam-controlled so you can paddle in the summertime and the water is always clear and cold. The temperature in the gorge is always cooler with low humidity.”

He points out that the Nanty has its two hardest rapids at the beginning, “Patton’s Run,” and at the end, “Nantahala Falls.”

Mark said whitewater kayaking was on his “bucket list,” and once his children were grown and out on their own, he took a whitewater kayaking course through the BCC and never looked

back.“The kayak gives me the vehicle to see nature with little or no

impact on it, and it allows me to see parts of this country that I would not be able to see any other way,” Mark said. “Kayaking inspires me to stay healthy so I can continue to paddle, and to work on my paddling skills so I can handle the next challenge. And those butterflies in my stomach when I know I am on the edge of my ability and feel the power of the water, it’s incred-ible.”

I left for Almond, N.C., on a Friday morning. Before arriving at camp, I stopped by the Nantahala Outdoor Store to see an old friend, Howard Chambers.

I visited with Howard for a little while, before heading to my home away from home, Turkey Creek Campgrounds, which I must give a five-star rating. It was the first time I camped there – it won’t be my last.

I pitched my tent right next to Turkey Creek, and was put to sleep Friday and Saturday nights by the trickle of moving water.

When I arrived at Turkey Creek Campgrounds my friend, Vander Hill, had already arrived and set up camp. He was nowhere to be found, probably running some of the rapids on the Nantahala, I thought.

Vander has paddled more than 20 years. He has probably

taught me more about whitewater kayaking than anyone else. I frequently paddle with Vander on the Locust Fork and Mulberry Fork rivers in North Alabama.

Vander truly loves the outdoors and he teaches kayaking, rock climbing and rapelling. He also enjoys mountain biking, back-packing, and he is certified as an advanced diver.

“Throughout the ‘90s, I climbed,” Vander said. “In the 2000s, I started kayaking and it stuck with me.”

For the past 10 years, he has assisted in kayak instruction and safety.

“I find a lot of enjoyment in teaching someone (kayaking, rapelling and rock climbing),” Vander said.

Vander told me he doesn’t have a favorite kayaking river.“I guess the river I am on at the time is my favorite river,” he

said. So, I figured his favorite river was the Nantahala, at least it was

the weekend we were there. The first time I paddled the Nantahala River, I was extremely

comfortable – to the point I was over-confident. “Kayaking is a sport where people tend to overestimate their

ability,” Vander later told me. “They think they are better than they really are.”

Where was Vander on my first trek down the Nantahala Falls? The year before, my 8-mile run down the Nantahala Gorge

was perfect – until the falls. I was so cocky. I thought I could blindly run through the falls

on the seat of my pants without any consequences.

A whitewater river can bring you back to earth quickly. It can also show you exactly who or what is in control. You really have to work with the river and take advantage of what it gives you.

Needless to say, my first trip down the falls was a disaster. At the very top of the falls, I missed my line and went directly into “the hole,” which immediately flipped my kayak upside down.

About the time I set up to begin my roll, I hit the turbulent waters at the bottom of the falls. I ended up swimming to shore.

Fortunately, the only thing I hurt was my pride. I will never forget that day and the lesson I learned. I pretty much figured out what I had done wrong, and what I

needed to do to successfully run the Nantahala Falls. I almost ran the falls this time without getting out of my boat

to take one more look, but I didn’t.Bob and I got out of our boats at a takeout above the falls.

Bob had a leg cramp, and it also gave me an opportunity to look at the falls one last time before taking the plunge.

Bob’s wife, Donna, was at the falls when we arrived. She had my camera, so I was able to get pictures of people from our group paddling down the falls, some successfully, some not so successfully.

Then there was me – it was my turn – the last one. I received advice about how to run the falls from Bob, Mark,

Vander and even Helen Todd, another kayak instructor who actually paddled down part of the falls with me. She even offered advice along the way.

Helen pulled into the lower end of Truck Stop Eddy, and I

Mark Garner, president of the Birmingham Canoe Club, said the club is offering several whitewater canoe and kayak courses this summer.

Page 13: Lakeside - June 2012

June 2012 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 13

made one heck of an eddy turn into the upper part of the same eddy. The current moves fast in this section of the river.

Truck Stop Eddy is the last eddy, right above the falls, to shield kayakers from the fast, turbulent current. When you reach this point, there’s no turning back.

While I was recovering from my mild heart attack, Helen gave me some advice.

“You need to go,” she said. “You need to go now.”Apparently there was a short break in raft traffic, so it was

now – or in my mind – perhaps later. But I knew eventually I had to go down the falls, so why not now?

I paddled out of the eddy and into the current. As I left the eddy, I heard one more piece of advice coming from Helen.

“Paddle,” she yelled. “Paddle hard.”I tried to stay in the green tongue of the current. I paddled

right past the big hole that grabbed me along the way on my first trip down the falls a year ago.

I continued on my way, angling my kayak right, as you should. I scanned the rapids, looking for the easiest place to turn my kayak left and down toward the lower portion of the falls.

If you hit the bottom of the falls at a right angle, you are going to flip. Kayakers have to turn the bow of their boat back toward the river’s left bank, before reaching the pile of whitewater at the base of the falls.

You only have a split second to make choices when you’re in

a rapid, so you have to fully commit to your decision, right or wrong.

As soon as I hit the pile of whitewater waiting for me at the bottom of the falls, I could feel and see the water move the bow of my kayak to the right. It was a weird sensation, but a great feeling.

Immediately a big smile appeared on my face. I couldn’t help but smile.

I knew I’d just made my first successful run through the Nantahala Falls, and it was a solid run.

It’s hard to describe the feeling you get when you successfully run a challenging rapid. It is that feeling that continues to draw me to whitewater.

I paddled away from Nantahala Falls feeling alive and with some sense of accomplishment.

I do look forward to going back to the Nantahala Falls for another successful run down the Class 3 rapid, but I expect my next trip is on the calmer waters of Logan Martin Lake. So until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

EDITOR’S NOTE: During the summer, the Birmingham Canoe Club offers whitewater canoe and kayak instruction. The instruction is beneficial to people, whether they want to paddle on flat water or whitewater. For more information about Birmingham Canoe Club trips and courses go to birmingham-canoeclub.org.

new Riverside business offers a unique take on the lake—dinner and charter cruises on the “Coosa Queen.”

“My husband and I have the opportunity to live on the water and enjoy it every day,” said Janice Urso, who owns Ultimate River Social Options with her husband, Don.

“Not everyone has that same opportunity and we want to be able to provide that in a fun-filled family atmosphere,” she said.

Urso said the Coosa Queen riverboat provides that and more.

“We offer two-hour cruises open to the public, and it can be booked for charter events,” she said.

Urso said the Coosa Queen is 58 feet long and 16 feet wide, with a large spinning paddle wheel at the back of the boat and smoke stacks on top. There are men’s and women’s restrooms

on board, as well as a tiki bar. The Coosa Queen can accommo-date 50 passengers.

“We can be booked for charter events and do event par-ties, corporate parties, weddings, civic club meetings, church groups—anything you can think of,” she said.

Urso said for chartered events, the boat and captain are provided.

“The person chartering it provides the catering and enter-tainment,” she said. “We have some caterers and entertainment we work with on a regular basis and can make recommenda-tions, or the person can book their own.”

Urso said it is a two-hour charter at $20 per person, with a minimum of $300 and a maximum of $600. It is $100 per hour after the first two hours.

“We will also offer two-hour cruises three times a day, three days a week,” she said.

Urso said the two-hour cruises will launch from Riverside Landing, on Depot Street across from Riverside City Hall. The cruises are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“We have a noon until 2 p.m. cruise, a 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. cruise and a sunset din-ner cruise from 6 until 8 p.m.,” she said. “We will serve food on the sunset dinner cruise, and snacks and drinks are available for purchase on the other two cruises.”

Urso said the sunset dinner cruises on Mondays and Wednesdays will feature buffet-style food. The cost is $30 per per-son.

“On Saturday’s sunset dinner cruises, we will offer a catered sit-down meal for a fine dining experience,” she said. “It is perfect for couples and special occasions.”

Urso said the Saturday sunset dinner cruises are $50 per person.

“These cruises are perfect for some-one who lives on or visits the lake, but may not have the opportunity to get out on the lake,” she said. “My husband and I live on a houseboat in Riverside and love it, and want to share that same joy with others.”

Here’s the place for finding all those needs for water activitiesBy MARK LEDBETTERPhotos by BOB CRISP

iving in Afghanistan as a consultant, Tommy Bridges called his son from Afghanistan and told him to start a business.

“I always wanted to own a shop,” Tommy’s son Thomas said.

Thomas started a bait and tackle shop in Riverside. His mother, Janet, told him to hang a “mechanic on duty” sign.

“He’s so good at tinkering with stuff and had done this (worked with engines) all his life,” Janet said.

With his mother and sister, Stephanie, the family now operates two businesses – the bait and tackle shop and Bridges’ Powersports in the old Smith Brothers shop on South Martin Street in Pell City. Tommy has never seen the businesses his family has started, but does provide business advice via three-way phone conversations.

Bridges’ Powersports features previously owned personal watercraft (Wave Runners and Sea-Doos), motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles.

“Previously owned sports craft are especially good for people not wanting to spend a lot of money on new items and get them reasonably priced,” Thomas said.

Bridges said that he wasn’t originally interested in retail sales but “people like to play with toys and get on the water.”

He knew people that may be willing to spend “a couple thousand dollars but not &10, 000 to $20,000.”

Bridges’ Powersports also carries motor cycle equipment and accessories, fishing tackle, and tubes to pull behind water-craft, including “Big Bertha,” the three-seated “Hot Dog,” and a popular two-seater.

They recently started carrying Quicksilver oil, a brand mar-keted by Mercury.

Watercraft sales are generally seasonal Bridges said. Some people will purchase watercraft just before spring. Others will wait until after Memorial Day weekend and will continue to buy through July.

At the end of August and heading into hunting season, ATVs and motorcycles will begin to sell, Bridges said.

Also working with Bridges is life-long friend Brandon Cirel. Both grew up together on the river and both served as mechan-ics in the Coast Guard. Cirel serves as a business manager.

With certified mechanics, Bridges’ Powersports offers more than retail sales. Certified by Evinrude, Mercury, Honda, and Yamaha, mechanics Fred White and Frank Fredrick provide full mechanic service and repair on inboard and outboard engines and will rebuild and winterize engines.

Mechanic Nathan Harris services motorcycles and engines.

Common problems brought to the mechanics are usually the results of two things.

One, some people don’t winterize their engines and batteries. People are disap-pointed when they pull out their watercraft expecting it to crank but doesn’t because of improper battery maintenance and/or gas treatment.

Two, the mechanics said, ethanol results in engine malfunction.

One mechanic said, “Ethanol tears up the system.”

Many marinas are now carrying non-ethanol products, he said.

Vehicles storage is also available for all types of vehicles.

Bridges said with 10 acres, they have plenty of room to expand their storage capacity.

They also offer valet service. Bridges said customers who have their watercraft in storage can call ahead of time and it will be ready for them at the business’s pier.

Another feature Thomas and Janet are excited about is the development of a recreational area in back of the shop along the lakefront. Sand has been brought in to

develop a beachfront and plans call for the construction of a Tiki Hut for concessions and rentals.

The recreational area will include a volleyball court and picnic tables and benches. A stage for performers is also being built. Janet said they wanted to make the area “family friendly.”

Pontoon boats will also be available for rental. Prior to rental, however, Bridges will require a safety class addressing water safe-ty, buoys, no wake zones and other impor-tant matters relating to their use. Prior to releasing the boat to the customer, Bridges will take the customer on a 15-minute tour to familiarize the customer with boat oper-ations. A boating license is required.

With so much to offer water sport enthusiasts, Janet said she is excited about the summer and her family’s involvement in the business.

“This is a family business,” she said.Bridges’ Powersports is located at

4202 Martin Street South, Cropwell AL near Lakeside Marina. For information call 205.814.1000.

t’s probably my excitement over it finally and officially, at least in my book, is summer.

I’m not waiting until the summer solstice, I’m there.Summer means lots of good things, like great long days

and sunshine and just playing outside more. But it also means finding such a bounty of fresh fruit

and vegetables and makes cooking much more interesting. So after already frequenting our area’s roadside

“stands” and produce markets, I decided this food spread would focus pretty much on fruit.

I dug up a recipe for a pork loin that everyone at my house loved, it puts the flavors of fresh grated ginger, red bell pepper and a little salt and ground pepper and with of all things, peaches! I added some fresh rosemary that the recipe didn’t call for, but I think it really adds some punch to the flavor.

I also added more grated ginger root, the recipe calls for two tablespoons, but if you like a zestier dish, I highly recommend doubling it to four tablespoons. Actually, I don’t think six would be too much, but taste and add as you prefer. I also used a two-pound pork loin instead of the one-pound loin suggested in the recipe and it worked just fine.

The leftovers I converted into sandwiches, adding a little of my some outstanding hot wing sauce.

I decided upon a cranberry-nut salad for an appetizer, it’s one of those you can play around with according to your preference of fruits.

And for dessert, and this is so easy but so good, a fruit

salad built around a base of whipped top-ping and sweet condensed milk. It was outstanding.

So here we go on another Lakeside Living food adventure! I hope you and yours enjoy them as we did!

Ginger and Peaches Pork LoinWhat you need:A one to two pound pork loinOne medium red bell pepper, juliennedOne medium can of sliced peaches, I

drained about half the liquid out and

used the low sugar syrup kind, of course.

A couple of tablespoons of olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Two tablespoons finely grated ginger root

(remember, I doubled it!)

One half cup low sodium chicken broth

One third cup spreadable peach fruit

(I used peach preserves)

One tablespoon Dijon mustard

(I doubled this and would recommend it!)

What you do:Slice uncooked loin into half inch

pieces and then use a rolling pin to flatten them a bit.

Spray a sauté pan with cooking spray, add two tablespoons of olive oil and heat on about medium. Add slices of pork loin

and cook until it isn’t pink. Remove slices from pan, and set aside.

Put red pepper and spices in, sauté until red pepper is getting tender. Add all other ingredients except the pork and sim-mer low while stirring. Add the pork slices and let it all simmer for about 15 minutes or until heated through and you’re done!

I think a good side for this dish would be wild rice or brown rice, but I made asparagus grilled in butter and lemon and it worked well, too.

Fruit salad (this I used as a dessert)What you need:Two cups fresh blueberries

Two cups fresh strawberries,

whole or sliced

Two cups fresh raspberries

A half pint of blackberries

One 12-ounce container of

whipped topping

A five-ounce can of sweet

condensed milk

You can substitute just about any fruit

for a favorite, such as sliced bananas,

peaches, grapes, whatever! Adding some

chopped nuts could be interesting…

What you do:This is so easy it’s ridiculous!Simply mix the milk and topping

together, then add fruit and you’re done! I used some frecsh peaches as well, and sliced some as a garnish. Top it with fresh mint.

Emergency shortcut: Use packaged frozen fruit, it comes in all kinds of assort-ments and does away with chopping.

A pork tenderloin seasoned with ginger and topped with peach-es and red bell pepper makes a main dish in record time.

Cranberry nut salad (I used this as an appetizer salad)What you need:One 12-ounce fresh cranberriesA half-cup of chopped walnutsTwo apples of your choice, chopped bite sizedTwo oranges, peeled and chopped into bite sized pieces (I chose to use canned mandarins, it saved some work and they’re good!!)Two tablespoons honey (The recipe didn’t call for it, but I added diced fresh peaches)

What you do:After chopping the fruit, just toss it in a bowl with the honey. I used

grapes and cumquats for garnish. (No one liked the cumquats!)You can add other sweetener if you like, and the next time I make it, I

think I’ll add a little lemon or lime juice. I lined a trifle dish with romaine leaves and just filled in with the fruit mixture, and put it on a platter sur-rounded with green and red grapes and the (ugh!) cumquats. Well, they looked pretty!

derful and ever changing color and nature produces the contrast between light and darkness. It’s a magical time, when you never know what beautiful scenes might come about. High clouds can reflect their color onto the water and add to the overall colors of the photograph. It is a quiet time to celebrate the beginning and end of the day, and to reflect on life. My photographs are an attempt to capture a feeling.”

When he took the class in Birmingham with Virginia Jones, Grayson said, “My photography skills took a leap…I learned about colors and contrasts. It is my belief that elaborate and expensive equipment is a waste of money without a photographer’s eye for colors and con-trasts. The photographer’s eye is what I learned from Virginia. In this process of producing some really nice photographs and with her encouragement, I acquired a passion for art as produced through a camera’s lens.”

Grayson’s first visits to Logan Martin Lake were fishing trips.

“In those early days, I knew that I always enjoyed the sunrises because of the beauty and quiet, except for the water fowl,” he said.

He says that his current home on the lake “is not much more than a fish camp, but it does have a dock and I can park my boats and enjoy the water activity with grandkids and neighbors. I did not know at that time that my interest in fish-ing would be replaced by my passion for photography, but the two seem to blend well together. Most of my time at the lake is spent without family, so it allows me to get out early and enjoy the daybreak. Sometimes, I travel to an inlet by boat A glorious view of Logan Martin taken just after sunset.

and other times, I may drive to a point where I want to take photograph. Places like University Marine provide wonderful opportunities for taking pictures across the sail boats against a setting sun. Or morning shots from the west side of the river at Stemley Bridge. In the two years that I have been doing sunsets and sunrises, I have only covered a small part of the river, but I have met some wonderful people in the process. I find that there is a community of photographers around Pell City and it is not unusual to run into one of them at a favorite spot at sunset.

“For me, a sunset is the most beautiful part of the day, not only in its appearance, but also in the way it makes you feel. Maybe it is my age and the fear of not being around to enjoy them in this earthly condition. Maybe I know that I am running out of days,” he said.

For inspiration, Grayson goes out with a quote from internationally renowned nature photographer Galen Rowell, “You only get one sunrise and one sunset per day, and you only get so many days on the planet. A good photographer does the math and doesn’t waste either.”

Latrelle Grayson has been recording images on Logan Martin for decades.

ustin Hogeland dreamed of living on the lake since he was a boy, so when he got a job offer in Pell City four years ago, he and his wife, Valerie, decided to see if that dream was possible.

“I told him if we moved here, we’d have to live on the lake,”

Valerie said.In search of a house in their price range, Justin made a trip

from Tuscaloosa to tour homes with realtor Lynda Sidlo.“We literally spent an entire day looking at lake houses, and

we couldn’t find anything that even remotely met our budget,”

Couple Finds Perfect House on a Budget

At left: The living room at the Hogeland home is designed for relaxing in true Lakeside style.

Below: Justin and Valerie Hogeland were thrilled to end up calling the lake their home.

Justin said. When they were almost ready to call it a day, Sidlo got a

call about a nearby home.“At that point, I was so depressed, and I thought our dream

had been shattered,” Justin said. “I was just going to head back

home, but she said it would only take a few minutes, so we decided to give it a look.”

They pulled up to the three bedroom, two bathroom house. Justin noted that it needed a lot of work, but was in a good loca-tion and had a perfect view of the lake.

“I called Valerie and said, ‘I think I found a house, but we still can’t afford it,” he said. “But as we were walking out the door that day, (the previous homeowner, Jackie Elliot), said, ‘All you have to do is make an offer.’”

Justin and Valerie decided to do just that, still not expecting to get the house.

“Our offer wasn’t even in the ballpark,” Justin said. “It was literally $50,000 less than the asking price.”

Much to their surprise and delight, the couple got the home, so they picked up and moved from Tuscaloosa. Justin soon settled into his job in physical therapy at Gentiva Home Health and Valerie as a dental hygienist at Pediatric Dental Associates.

About a month after they moved in, the couple found an unexpected surprise.

“We found a statue of an old man and woman left in the back of a closet,” Justin said. “Attached to the statue was a three-page letter from Ms. Elliot.”

In the letter, Elliot explained why she sold them the house, saying she felt they were good people who would positively contribute to the Pell City community.

“It was just really nice,” Justin said. “We couldn’t believe it.”Since they moved in, the Hogelands have been on a steady

journey toward revamping the home’s décor.“Around income tax time, we usually splurge on one big

project,” Justin said. “We’re mostly done now, but there’s always something else to do.”

The game room, which has a pool table and a bar, took the most work of any of the rooms, Justin said.

“This used to be a home office,” he said. “The windows and door were out, and the carpet still needs to be redone. We knew were going to have to sink a sig-nificant amount of money to make it what we wanted. We like to entertain a lot though, so it was worth it.”

Next to the game room is the living room, which has bright red walls accent-ed with black, gray and white furniture and decorations.

“Before, the house was done in a country-like theme, and every room was painted the same color, so we had to fix that,” Valerie said.

The kitchen was completely redone with new stainless steel appliances, gran-ite countertops, and lighting that Justin did himself.

The three bedrooms were also updated. The room with a view of the lake is the master bedroom, a guest bedroom is decorated with Valerie’s collection of “Wizard of Oz” memorabilia and the third room serves as an office and storage space.

Next on their project list is redoing the master bathroom, which Valerie said she is very much looking forward to.

Despite all the interior renovations, Justin said they still bank the most hours in their back yard, where they recently added a stone patio complete with com-fortable chairs and a “fireglass” fire pit.

“It burns blue, so it looks really neat at night, and it puts off tons of heat if you want it to,” Justin said.

Justin’s current “pride and joy” sits on the back deck as well – a new Big Green Egg ceramic grill.

“I’m in love with it,” he said. “People don’t believe me when I tell them how

wild it is.”The grill uses lump charcoal and will keep at 250 degrees

for up to 30 hours, Justin said.“I’ve had it six weeks and cooked on it probably 30 times

already,” he said. The deck overlooks their piece of Logan Martin Lake. The

couple takes advantage of the lake with a 24-foot pontoon boat and plenty of outdoor hobbies like wakeboarding.

“We have company most weeks in the summer, so we’re always out doing something on the water,” Justin said. “We’re also known for our Fourth of July parties. The year before last, we had 350 people show up. We went through 80 pounds of barbeque and 15 gallons of margaritas. That was a little much, so we didn’t do it last year, and we still haven’t decided about this year.”

Justin said having friends visit reminds them how fortunate they are to live on the lake.

“You really take it for granted,” he said. “When they come and have such a good time, it hits home how lucky we are.”

Valerie said they love having the lake at their fingertips, but also being close to the city.

“I love that you don’t have to go anywhere to be at the lake,” she said. “A lot of nice houses, you have to drive 30 minutes to get to the nearest store. The view, the property and the access to town were big selling points for this house. We’re close to every-thing, but still feel like we live out.”

Justin said he never thought he would reach his dream of owning a lake home this soon.

“At the time we got the house, I was 28, so it happened much earlier than I ever anticipated,” he said. “Never in a mil-

lion years did I think I would be living on the lake at this age, but we were able to crunch some numbers and fit in into our budget, and it’s been great. We enjoy it every day.”

In Search of Lake MonstersThe American ProCatters Monster tournament is coming this month

By MARK LEDBETTERPhotos by BOB CRISP

Clear Creek Harbor Will Be Home Base forthe June 15-16 ProCatters Catfish Tournament

ith special rods and reels in hand, pro and amateur anglers will launch from Clear Creek Harbor in search of “The Monsters of Logan Martin” in the American ProCatters Monster tournament.

The June 15-16 event is part of the national catfish chal-lenge. Anglers will be hunt for monstrous catfish in pursuit of the largest cash prize awarded in Alabama competition.

Fishermen will be limited to five fish and state regulations restrict catches over 34 inches to one per fisherman, or two 34-inch catches per boat.

Fishing will begin at 6 a.m. and stop at 3 p.m. Weigh-in will be at 4 p.m. All fish must be alive when brought to the scales and released.

Tournament organizer Barry Hagan said a catfish weighing 20 or more pounds feels like you’re trying to land a salt water fish. “They fight and pull five times more than a bass,” Hagan said.

First place winners of the two-day event will receive $8,000 and a total of $16,000 cash prize money will be awarded.

Clear Creek Harbor will host the event and will offer boat launch, rest rooms, and shuttle service. Food will be offered at the Willow Grill.

J&S Country Store has an array of dishes to suit all your wishesBy CHRIS NORWOODPhotos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

inda Harness, who oversees the deli portion of J&S Country Store and Deli in Cropwell, is in her forty-fifth year in the food service industry, including 30 years as general manager in restaurants and food stores. She has

been at J&S since the deli portion opened three years ago.The gas station and convenience store portion has been

around for seven years, and is owned by Craig and Michelle Frickey, who also own Sammy’s Touch and Go near the Pell City Airport. Craig helps out in the deli sometimes, Harness said.

The menu consists of two homemade soups per week, a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, hot meals, wraps and spe-cialty sandwiches including the Rueben, pot roast and flatbread chicken sandwiches. They also serve burgers and hot dogs as well as homemade cheesecakes. House specialties include the loaded potato soup and chicken salad. Other menu offerings

include pizza, and spaghetti and lasagna appear on the menu some weeks.

“Craig helps me out with the cooking sometimes, and we just really enjoy coming up with new recipes that we think our customers will like,” she said. “And we also cater.”

Catering includes pretty much any size party and anything that the customer wants. “If we can’t do it here, then we’ll do it at the restaurant.”

There are six tables inside the deli if you want to dine in, and takeout is available as well.

Prices range from $1.89 for a homemade muffin to $6.99 or $7.99 for a combination meal with a sandwich, soup, pasta or potato salad or chips and a pickle. Soup and six inch sandwich combinations are also available without the other sides.

Sandwiches are available on white or wheat bread, baguettes, sourdough, croissants or wraps. Other sandwich

Art by the Water

Go Ahead, Just Call Her on the Eccentric Side!Denise Lyons takes license with her creative talentsBy AZIZA JACKSONPhotos by BOB CRISP

ucked away into a small secluded area way back in the woods is artist Denise Lyons, whose studio sits just above a small creek that provides the perfect ambience for anyone searching for a break from the busy world.

It is there, at her studio, where she creates unique pottery and jewelry pieces that ship all over the country.

Some of her most impressive work is found in her unique miniature houses that have a life all their own.

“I’m all about being as eccentric and wild as you can get,” Lyons said. “Everything is so the same now. You’ve got to be dif-ferent.”

Lyons has been busy with her pottery and jewelry since 2004, and said that she can make anything from clay.

“I do everything under the sun,” she said. “The inspiration is my mother, Alicia Lowe. She’s an artist and she’s been doing it since she was 18.”

Her parents own Jenny Glaze Art Studio in Homosassa, Fla., an art gallery that features some of her parents’ pottery as well as her own.

“Both parents are behind me 100 percent, there’s a lot of encouragement, a lot of pointers,” Lyons said.

“My mother tells me all the time to ‘take your time to test your glazes,’ and I never do it.”

Testing is something pottery artists do to see what colors their clay will turn ahead of time, but Lyons doesn’t necessarily play by those rules.

“I love the Easter egg surprises,” she said.Sometimes those surprises come with a price that deserves

a lot of patience.“I’ll start out and have an idea,” Lyons said. “What I’ll start

to make will turn out completely different.”Her pottery starts off as a big lump of clay that she rolls

out on a big slab and forms into whatever form she wants.

For her houses, she uses a cardboard mold to get a basic shape of the house’s base before hand molding it in certain places to give it a unique look.

Once the clay is in the form of her choosing, Lyons first uses bisque firing for several hours with temperatures sometimes reaching 1,000 degrees Celsius.

“You cool it down, wash it down, and glaze it,” Lyons said.

Her techniques vary, depending on what she is trying to make.

For her houses, Lyons first cuts out the win-dows and door openings.

“Then I’m like ‘Oh, a porch would look good here or a couple of steps would look good there,” she said. “I am really sporadic. Even if I mess it up something cool will come out.”

The same rings true for her jewelry.Lyons said her first piece of jewelry started with

a piece of wire, she made a ring for herself and then a necklace.

Pretty soon, people were literally buying the jewelry off her neck, ears, wrists, and fingers before she decided to go into jewelry making full time.

Her work can be found at the Heritage Hall Museum in Talladega and at Nunnally’s Framing and

Lyons likes letting her clay houses evolve as they are created.

Art Gallery in Anniston; her jewelry is featured at Cosmic Debris in Anniston.

Lyons described herself as someone who can see the beauty in even the most miniscule things.

“As a kid, I knew I was different in a way when all the kids were doing their work and I was drawing whimsical lines,” she said.

As evident in many of her nature-themed jewelry and pottery pieces, Lyons believes the world in itself is a work of art.

“There are tons and tons and tons of aspects for every part of this world, whether it’s a puddle or how leaves are gathering on the streets of Nepal, or how rocks are stacked on the streets of Los Angles,” Lyons said.

“It’s the way moss grows on trees. It’s endless.”Contact Aziza Jackson at [email protected].

You never quite know what a piece will turn out to become with

Lyons’ talented hands at work.

Jim Presley

im Presley began selling real estate for ERA King in 2000 after working for UPS in Anniston and Sylacauga for 30 years.

“It’s something I enjoy doing,” said Presley. “I had always had an interest in real estate. I bought and sold several homes when I was younger.”

Presley bought his first home in the Anniston area when he was 21.

He said that his grandfather did a little “buying and sell-ing” as well. Presley said that his grandfather once bought a home, began to move in, sold it later in the day and loaded up his things that evening.

Concerning real estate agents, Presley said, “I think prob-ably one of the things that we all have in common is that we enjoy working with people.”

“You meet a lot of interesting people,” added Presley. One of the most interesting people he has met while

showing homes is a survivor of Pearl Harbor. Presley helped his son find a home and later helped him sell the home.

He was the most memorable of all the people I’ve worked with in the past,” said Presley. “It was a real honor to meet him.”

Presley said that talking to so many people while working with UPS made it an easy transition to real estate.

“But we didn’t have time to stand around and talk,” said Presley. “We hustled.”

After leaving UPS, Presley took a little time off. He used that time to complete real estate classes.

“When you’re working with a young couple for their first

home, you try to give them all the information on other homes on the market. We show them what is presently on the market, what homes have actually sold for and how they compare to their home.”

“We show them what they can actually expect to receive for their home. We do that with the buyers as well. They know what they’re getting.”

Presley also talked about ERA King’s “One stop shop-ping,” citing the company’s division of mortgage lending.

Presley is a member of the Chapel in the Pines church and the St. Clair Board of Realtors.

He has completed the Accredited Buyers Representative, Commercial Land Transactions and Subdivision Development courses. His specializations include first time homebuyers, new construction, commercial property, investment properties, lots and acreage, and lake property.

Presley has also been active in ERA King’s participation in the annual “Float Yer Boat” Cardboard Regatta in Pell City.

“We really enjoyed that,” said Presley about the annual boat race.

Presley says that Logan Martin Lake is a great selling point for the Pell City area. Presley and his wife of 25 years, Wanda, live on the lake and have four grandchildren who enjoy coming to visit.

“We love the lake,” said Presley. “We eat supper by the lake. We watch the sun go down. You just have to be there to see the beauty of it.”

As for the grandchildren, Presley said, “They’re just get-ting started on the lake and they love it.”
