On a Friday afternoon in mid-May, I had to apologize to David Atchison for suspecting he’d been spent the morning in a kayak on Logan Martin when
actually he’d been covering a meeting. “I haven’t been on the lake since they spotted that gator,” he told me.
We both laughed the uneasy laughter of recognizing and trying to dismiss an unpleasant truth. We both knew David would be on the lake the next day. He was, and it was fine. More than fine, in fact.
As he writes in this month’s installment of Traveling the Coosa, the lake, both its shores and its waters, was full of friendly folks enjoying their Saturday in their favorite lakeside activities: “…fishing, swimming and boating. Some just sat close along the shoreline, talking to friends and enjoying the view of the lake.”
These people were not letting stories of an alligator sighting keep them away from the lake, and neither should you. After all, alligators have a natural fear of humans, according to Capt. Fred Bain of the state Department of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
As Bain told writer Elsie Hodnett, if the gator found himself in the vicinity of a bunch of noisy humans, he’d likely turn tail and swim. “If it hasn’t been fed by humans, an alligator will generally depart when it sees a human get close,” Bain said.
That fear of humans is beneficial, both to the gator and to us. We don’t want the gator to lose it. As long as it avoids humans, it poses no danger to us and is less likely to be killed itself.
It’s unlikely that you’ll ever see it. It may already have left the area. But if you do see it, don’t harass it and don’t feed it. You can’t make a pet of a 7-foot alligator.

Whether coaxing animals out of wood or creating life from paint, Lakeside artists Tom Goodwin and Marcela Johnson have found new calling in retirement.

hen folks retire after so many years on the job, what better way to spend that time than on the labors of love that put smiles on their faces over the years?
How about seeing those hobbies put out in public and perhaps even making some extra money from them?

Two new residents on Logan Martin Lake have recently put the fruits
of their labors up for sale in Artscape Gallery in Pell City. Like all artists, they hold deep personal histories with their works that keeps them going at it.
Tom Goodwin’s woodcarving creations fill his section of the gallery. There are plenty of small wild animals frozen in action, be it a bear or a tiger or a whale. Among the wooden wildlife are detailed faces carved into split golf balls, hand-carved pins, a leaf and some wooden faces.
“I only carve for fun. That way it’s not a job. If I see something I want to carve, I try to carve it,” he said.
His pieces are intricately detailed. Goodwin uses a wood-burning tool to individualize the animals’ hairs.
Such a process take awhile. A sculpture might take a few days to carve and color, but that’s only after carving for eight hours straight. Goodwin said he prefers to work on the pieces at his own leisure for two reasons. One is to keep eye strain at a minimum. The other is to keep the art what it’s supposed to be: fun.
“When I was younger, I wouldn’t have had the patience,” he said.
That isn’t an issue now, as Goodwin often has two or three projects going simultaneously. He’s happy that way.
Goodwin selects the wood pieces carefully and then lets inspiration take its toll.
“I might keep a piece of wood a year or two before I see what’s in it,” he said.
While raw materials such as bass wood or cottonwood are usually purchased, Goodwin takes inspiration from
driftwood pieces he finds in the lake. A fish carved into one such piece rests on a gallery shelf.
Goodwin describes his venture into woodcarving as an accident. Several years ago, he was stricken with pneumonia. During that time, he didn’t have the energy to do many of the activities he regularly enjoyed.
He eventually decided, “Why not try?” and started whittling into a small piece of wood with a pocketknife to see what would come out of it. Sure enough, the small block soon became an even
smaller wooden man.A creative outlet was discovered, and
Goodwin was hooked. His hobby took a professional turn
in 1993 when he saw an ad in the Birmingham news for a woodcarving show in Huntsville.
There he met his future mentor, Ray Jones, who was a member of the Tannehill Woodcarvers Club.
After more practice, Goodwin progressed from carving little wooden men to realistic animals. This led to wooden pet sculptures.
Of all the things he has carved, the animals remain Goodwin’s favorites. This is mostly due the nature bonds he’s developed from growing up with pets. He says he can’t remember going through a year while growing up in which he didn’t have one.
“In fact, my first class was animal carving,” he said. “I guess that’s just me being a country boy.”

Goodwin moved here in 2000 after retiring as a staff manager at BellSouth. He is from the now-defunct community of Chalkville. He was been a member of the Council of the Arts since moving here and decided to put his work in the gallery this spring.
Artscape’s other newest creator is Marcela Johnson, a retired social worker and nurse from Redondo Beach, Calif. Her outlet is painting.
Johnson works with different styles, including watercolors, acrylics and mixed media that integrates newspapers, magazines and other items into the pictures.
Along with a variety of styles, she does a variety of subjects.
“That way I just paint what I want to paint,” as she put it.
For example, when she first moved here, she was intrigued by the number of people dressing up to go to church every Sunday and so created an acrylic of the image it conjured.
She was also inspired to do a watercolor of carnation after seeing a photograph.
“It was just too beautiful not to paint,” she said.
These works can be found in Artscape along with others, such as a hybrid of a lady with a plant and a butterfly, plant images, and a piece titled “Lady Under Stress” that represents art deco, Johnson’s favorite art period.
One thing her paintings have in common is color. None of them are dull,
as the bright mixtures are meant to keep Johnson smiling as she creates them. She refers to the results as “happy art.”
“I love bright colors. They really light up a room,” she said.
Painting has been a labor of love her entire life. Johnson first picked up a paintbrush when she was a 7-year-old and kept at it through her school years and beyond. She has taken some courses over the years but for the most part remains self-taught.

The creative outlet was a great help when she began working, as it helped keep her calm when her career took her through the stress of working with developmentally disabled families.
Johnson moved here a year ago. She began putting her work in the Gallery in March after her neighbor, another artist in the gallery, told her about it.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.
A pair of geese feed in some grass along the shores of Logan Martin Lake.
Folks are friendly on the lake, even when you interfere with their fishing.
Story and Photos by DaviD atchiSon
All I can say is everyone I met on my latest venture down Logan Martin Lake, part of the 631-mile Alabama Scenic River Trail, was about as friendly as anyone could be.
That always seems to be the case when I paddle on Logan Martin Lake, and my short Saturday excursion which started and ended at Surfside Six, next to the Alabama 34 bridge, was no different.
Everybody I met was so nice — even when I probably got a little too close to their fishing lines, no problem.
I guess it is the summer weather, but the lake was full of
people, fishing, swimming and boating. Some just sat close along the shoreline, talking to friends and enjoying the view of the lake.
It was great, and I talked to plenty of people as I slowly headed south from the boat ramp.
My intention was to cross the main channel to the Talladega County side of the lake and head south, but when I looked across the choppy waters of the river, there lots of high-speed boats and personal water craft zooming up and down the lake. My 17-foot kayak was a bit slower, so I decided

just to explore the St. Clair County side — and I’m glad I did. I arrived at Surfside Six at about 2 p.m., checked with
management and unloaded my boat. There on the bank, near the boat ramp, were two geese feeding
along the grassy shore. I was able to get several photographs of the pair of geese, which seemed pretty accustomed to people. They would feed a while along the shoreline and then cool off a bit in the lake water.
They didn’t pay that much attention to me as I carried my kayak to the water’s edge, got onboard and paddled off.
I didn’t have to go far before I saw a group of young people beating the summer heat by jumping off a stump into the cool waters of Logan Martin Lake. I stopped and talked to the group for a little while, took a few pictures, and then met young Ryan Keith of Leeds.
Ryan proudly showed me the bass he caught before releasing the fish back into the water — alive.
I talked to the youngsters at the Surfside Six campground about the different attractions in the area before heading off downstream.
I was glad to reach the first slough off the main river channel of the lake. With all the boat traffic, paddling took a lot of concentration to keep upright, but the more I paddled the more relaxed I became.
It’s been a while since I’ve been in my long, touring kayak. It really has good stability, but the narrow kayak feels a little tipsy at first in rough water, and, as I said, the main channel was pretty rough with all the boat traffic speeding up and down.
June 2010 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes | 13
“That’s what I would worry about,” said Arnold Traweek, who I met in the first slough below where I started my trip. “I’d worry about being upside down in a boat like that.”
I could tell Traweek thought my boat was a little unusual for the lake crowd. He took a few pictures of me in my boat. It was nice to get off the main channel and into calmer waters and talk to a few people who live along the lake.
“You wouldn’t even think this was back here,” said Robyn Thomas, who lives toward the back of the slough.
The slough is quite different from the main channel of the lake. One side of the slough is undeveloped, woods, making it very private for the lake home owners.
The people who live there know one another. It seems like a close-knit lake community. The residents who live in the slough also own the point that’s across the slough.
It provides not only a buffer, but also a place where local children and Boy Scout troops can camp overnight, said Jim Hutson, a long time resident of the community.
In fact, I visited with some of the youngsters who were
having a wiener roast and camping out on the point that night. Blake Lowe of Pell City cut the grass on the point so his
son, nephew and one of their friends could camp there. Matt and Brittany Gillison provided a helping hand,
unloading camping equipment and setting up tents for the night.
Matt, who is an Eagle Scout but now grown, camped many a night on the point with his Boy Scout troop and friends.
They travel to the campsite by boat. Thomas said the community where the slough is located
once was widely known as Enchanted Hills. The lake homes are north of Forest Drive, near Old Collins Ferry Road.
The community slough also has two muskrats, one dark and one light colored, which give it an outdoors feeling.
While trying to get a picture of the muskrats, I spotted a pair of red-tailed hawks flying overhead near the point.
The slough is also loaded with fish, Cecil Chappell said.Chappell, who is an Ashland police officer, was fishing
in the slough with his wife Sheila. Sheila once worked as a

Logan Martin is one of their favorite lakes to fish. I paddled around the lake some more before returning
to the slough to say my goodbyes to a few folks and visit the campers who were spending the night on the point.
What a great adventure for young boys. The campfire was going and the tents were up. I took a few shots and headed back to Surfside Six. Darkness
was approaching fast.I paddled double-time and dodged fishing lines from the
campsites along the Surfside Six campground.

Fishing anglers Cecil and Sheila Chappell try their luck in a slough close to the Enchanted Hills community of Pell City.
I apologized to the fisherman, but I was able to avoid getting tangled up in any of the fishing lines.
When I arrived at the boat ramp, a group of people from the camp interrupted their evening walk to help steady my kayak so I could get out. That was nice after spending about six hours in the boat. After all, I’m no spring chicken anymore.
Anyway, I look forward to my next trip, crossing over to the other side of the lake in search of a spot I’ve heard about where people go to jump off rock cliffs into the lake. Sounds like fun. So until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

he participates in the American Cancer Society Pell City Relay for Life each year, but the luminaria ceremony is her passion.
“The ceremony gives you chills,” said Jill Rutledge, of Pell City. “It is such a moving experience.”
Rutledge said the luminarias are white paper bags with a light inside. The bags are purchased in memory of or in honor of someone who has fought or is fighting cancer.
The names are hand-written on the luminaria bags, and placed around the track at Pete Rich Stadium at Pell City High School, where the annual Pell City Relay for Life takes place.
“I’ve just enjoyed doing that part of Relay,” Rutledge said. “I hand-write the names on the luminarias with the help of some of my family and friends. It is a special experience to write the names.”
Rutledge said she first became
involved with Relay when her father, Dr. Donn Brascho, was the state president for the American Cancer Society, in the early 1980s.
“When Relay came along, our family was involved and supported the effort every year,” she said.
Rutledge said both of her father’s parents died of cancer, along with her mother’s father.
“And my dad has always been involved, treating cancer patients for over 40 years,” she said. “It was always personal, even before I had cancer.”
Rutledge said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in March or April 2003.
“I just noticed a change and went in for further tests,” she said.
Rutledge said she had two tumors, and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. She achieved remission in December 2003.
“That year, I had surgery two weeks
before Relay, and couldn’t participate (with the luminarias),” she said. “I was going to just attend the Relay, but it stormed so badly that the Relay was canceled.”
Rutledge said she was back in action with the luminarias the next year. In addition to lining the track with luminarias, plain white luminarias are placed in the stadium to spell out HOPE.
“At the end of the Relay, they shut the lights off and you can see HOPE on the stadium,” she said. “The lights are around the track, and you walk in silence as someone sings. It gives you the opportunity to look at the bags, and everyone is silent and very respectful.”
Rutledge said this year enough luminarias were purchased to completely circle the track for the first time, and even fill in some of the spaces between the normal luminaria spacing.

She said someone is always walking around the track throughout the Relay event, and they can look for names on luminarias they have purchased.
“You see different people who have bought bags in memory of or in honor of the same person,” she said. “One person’s name may be on multiple bags, because we create a new luminaria for each one purchased.”
Rutledge said having cancer has not changed the meaning of Relay for her.
“I went through a lot, but there are others who went through a lot worse,” she said.
Rutledge said she thinks the Relay event may mean a lot more to her family, due to her experience.
“I think it was something we were meant to do,” she said. “We have a passion for the cause.”
The luminarias spell out HOPE and are also placed around the track at Pete Rich Stadium at Pell City High School, where the annual Pell City Relay for Life takes place.

Many people have visited the RV campgrounds surrounding Logan Martin Lake so far this summer, and many more are expected.
But as the vacationers come and go from the campsites, they may notice a few who have taken up full-time residence on the grounds. Some people have turned their lots into patios, the lake’s shoreline into their front yard and their RVs into homes.
The lifestyle has some benefits, as Jerry Wallace pointed out.
“The biggest advantage I have is not having to cut grass,” he said. “And I had a swimming pool at the house, so I don’t have to keep that up anymore.”
The Wallaces, Jerry and wife Carolyn, moved to Lakeside Landing in Cropwell in April 2008. Their 2008 model Sandpiper camper measures 40 feet long and 8 feet wide, with an extra three feet in added width from the RV’s “slide outs.”
Their covered patio area features seating for at least seven, a cushioned swing and a table for two. The porch is decorated with flowers, a sign that states “The Wallaces” and a decorative birdhouse which reads “Gone Fishin’.”
The retirees moved to the campground from their two-acre spread in Pell City. Wallace said living here is a lot like living in any other community, with neighbors cooking, visiting and fishing together.
“We have a lot of nice neighbors,” he said. “I have a fire pit. We’ll make a fire and cook pies on it when we have people over.”
He also said living here gives them an opportunity to meet new people from all over. “We have people come in from everywhere, Canada, Wyoming, everywhere,” he said.
Steve and Connie McKnabb, who also live in Lakeside Landing, moved to the campground nearly three years ago from North Carolina. McKnabb said the location was an advantage for his job as a professional fisherman.
“I always liked Alabama because of the lakes,” A lot of our major tournament trail would come here. Out of four tournaments a year, two of them are in Alabama,” he said.
“This is a good lake; there is some good fishing here.”The McKnabbs made a 2005 Keystone-Montana Fifth
Wheel trailer their home. The model is 36.5 feet long and around 10 feet wide with slide outs.
Their trailer contains a full kitchen, complete with an island; a living room with a couch, recliner, TV and computer; and a bedroom with a king-size bed.
Inside are picture and several trophies from McKnabb’s fishing exploits. Beside those are carvings of fish he made by hand out of deer antlers.
“It’s a lot of space,” he said. “It’s real comfortable.”The McKnabbs agree they feel safe living at the
campground. They said that was an important factor with Steve going out of town for tournaments.
Connie McKnabb pointed out that the campground staff are there to handle maintenance issues, big or small.
“If you have any problem, no matter how minute it is, they will come check it out for you,” she said.
McKnabb said other advantages are the cost of living and, of course, the view.
“In the summer, sometimes on the weekends, (lots) will fill up down (by the lake),” he said. “Everybody wants to be close to the water. But all week long, you can see all the way across. And I can sit right here and watch the fireworks from

the city.”Both couples admitted their lifestyle choice
has a few disadvantages. Both Carolyn Wallace and Connie McKnabb had the same complaint.
“I do miss my washer and dryer,” Carolyn said.“Washer and dryer,” Connie said.Jerry Wallace said storage space was another
sacrifice they had to make, and that he missed his “big TV.” But while it may not be for everyone, he said he and his wife are more than content to be full-time campers.
“A lot of people don’t like it,” he said. “But we have been camping since back in the early (1960s). We have always enjoyed it. We just do whatever we want to do.”
Jerry and Carolyn Wallace relax on the patio in front of their Sandpiper camper. The couple has lived in their RV for more than two years.

happeningsTheatreJune brings a variety of entertainment events for all ages to
Logan Martin Lake audiences, with Pell City Center and Talladega’s Ritz Theatre both in the line-up.
For youngsters, Pell City Center hosts its signature Drama Camp for ages 5-14, and this year’s camp offers a first-time opportunity for youth to take part in a full-scale musical.
“We are absolutely excited about this,” said Kathy McCoy, director for Pell City Center. “The production the kinds will do is a bona fide musical this year.”
The camp is in its fourth year at Pell City Center and can fill up quickly, so McCoy encourages that space be reserved quickly.
Drama Camp begins June 14, with the public production set for 7 p.m. June 25. Drama Camp will meet at Pell City Center 1-4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
The production this year is “Paintin’ the Fence,” a musical based on “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” It’s filled with lots of fun roles for young actors, and children with and without experience are invited to take part, McCoy said.Director for camp is Ashley Burrage, drama teacher for The Donoho School in Anniston. David Keefer, technical director for Jacksonville State University, will introduce campers to technical design.
Registration may be done at the Pell City Center offices at 120 Williamson Drive (across from Pell City High School), and forms are available online at www.pellcitycenter.com. You may also call the center at 205-338-1974.
Talladega’s Ritz Theatre brings Grammy award winner and 1994 Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year Pam Tillis to the stage.
The daughter of country singer Mel Tillis, she began her career as a demo singer in Nashville and signed with Warner Records in 1981.
Her single, “Don’t Tell Me What To Do,” reached the top five on the Billboard country chart in 1991, and in the same year, Tillis had a gold album, “Put Yourself in My Place.”
Tillis performs two shows at The Ritz on June 24 with performances at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $25, and you may call the theater at 256-315-0000 or order tickets on line at www.talladegaritz.com.
Tillis’s recordings include a No. 1 hit, “Mi Vida Loca” in 1995 along with “One of Those Things” and “Maybe it Was Memphis,” which both made the top ten charts.

Logan Martin’s Elusive AlligatorA gator in the lake is no need to panic. But if you see it, don’t feed it.
An estimated 7- to 8-foot alligator first appeared in the slough
at Riverside Landing.
By ELSIE HODNETT
Local residents got quite a surprise one May morning when what appeared to be a floating tree trunk in a slough on Logan Martin turned out to be a 7- to 8-foot
alligator.“I thought it was a log,” said Jacob Waldrop, with
Tradesman Co., who was building a new pier at Riverside Landing.
Waldrop said when he threw a rock at the “log,” it moved.“I thought, ‘That’s interesting,’ and left it alone,” he said.Waldrop went to inform officials at Town Hall about the
alligator, which he estimated was about seven feet long.Another local resident spotted the reptile while driving and
pulled off onto a side road to get a better look. Other residents received phone calls from friends and showed up to get a glimpse. Pretty soon, a crowd gathered to watch as the gator swam lazily in the deepwater slough, ducking under the water if anyone got too close.
Town officials called the Alabama Department of Conservation Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (formerly Game and Fish) for assistance.
Wildlife officials arrived late that evening, and set up a limb line baited with chicken in an attempt to catch the gator.
The gator, however, was not keen on chicken. It left the slough at Riverside Landing overnight, reappearing the
next morning about a mile away in a slough near River Bend Apartments.
Riverside police officers and apartment residents kept an eye on the gator throughout the day until wildlife officials arrived that evening and went out in two boats to try and capture it. After eluding its would-be captors for several hours, the gator disappeared again.
The following morning, officials once again were trying to locate the wily critter.
“We are hoping someone will see it and call us,” said Capt. Fred Bain, District 2 supervisor for law enforcement for the Alabama Department of Conservation Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
Three weeks later, the gator had still not been spotted. While news of an alligator created quite a stir for some
residents, game officials say alligators are not uncommon in this area.
“Alligators are more common than people around here think,” said St. Clair County Commission Chairman Stan Batemon, who worked as a game warden and supervisor for District 2 (which includes St. Clair County) for the Alabama Department of Conservation Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
Batemon said that over the past 20 years, alligators have

Logan Martin’s Elusive Alligator adapted fairly well to central and north Alabama.“I speculate they have learned to live in old beaver
huts and old dug-out areas under the river bank,” he said. “They crawl in there and, since they are cold-natured, their metabolism slows way down so they conserve energy without needing to feed (similar to hibernating). On a warm day, they crawl out and the sun warms them up.”
Batemon said alligators are opportunistic feeders, eating dead fish and other animals or live prey if they can catch it.
“They are not likely a danger to humans,” he said. “They are more likely a danger to a person’s pets. However, as with all wildlife, people should steer clear of it and give it a wide berth.”
Batemon said if you look at places in Florida and south Alabama where there are thousands of alligators, the residents and boaters don’t have much of a problem with them, as far as the alligators being a danger to humans.
“I would like to emphasize caution, as with all wildlife (deer, bobcats, raccoons, birds, etc.),” he said. “This (alligator) is just another wildlife we have been blessed with.”
Bain said alligators have a natural fear of humans.“We have never had a report of injury from an alligator
attack on Logan Martin Lake,” he said. “If it hasn’t been fed by humans, an alligator will generally depart when it sees a human get close.”
While Bain emphasized using caution on the lake, he related the alligator to a poisonous snake in the water — you know they are there from time to time.
He said the alligator may leave the area and not return.“The message we want to get out is that if you see a large
alligator around an area, it could be a danger; don’t feed it,” he said. “It becomes used to humans if it is fed and will return to that area. It also loses its fear of humans and may attack them or small pets or children.
“I don’t want people to think there is a strong possibility of it attacking humans. At this point, there is no reason to believe it has lost its fear of humans.”
Bain said it is against state law in St. Clair and Talladega counties to feed or possess an alligator.
“You can’t shoot or trap or manhandle one without a permit,” he said. “And there is no open season on alligators in St. Clair or Talladega counties. You can defend yourself from immediate harm, but I don’t think it will be an issue with this alligator.”
Bain said anyone who sees an alligator should call the Alabama Department of Conservation Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries District 2 office 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday at 256-435-1642 or after hours call the game watch number at 1-800-272-4263.

It was a wide-open field of 20 horses at the 136th Kentucky Derby, with no big favorite emerging in pre-race betting. The only sure wager that day was a good time was to
be had at the Pine Harbor Dinner Dance Club’s Kentucky Derby Party.
Jim and Carolyn Bentley, who helped organize the party, were thrilled with the turnout for the party held at Even Odds Food and Spirits in Cropwell.
“It was the first time we rented this place out, and we had to guarantee a minimum of 70 people, and it looks like we may have oversold,” Jim Bentley said. “I think we’ve got about 120 names of people who have paid.”
The party atmosphere was second only to actually being in Louisville for the Derby with mint juleps and big hats in abundance.
“(The Derby) is something everybody likes. It’s different, and it lets us start the party at 4 (p.m.). It’s going to last until 11 o’clock tonight,” Jim Bentley said.
Before the race, attendees got a chance to mingle and strategize about which horse to back while snacking on appetizers such as Benedictine sandwiches and ham biscuits and sipping on the libation of their choice from the cash bar.
Bentley led the party-goers in a rendition of “My Old Kentucky Home” moments before the race began. What it lacked in harmony was made up in spirit.
Ron Lewis, Judi Denard (who also handled the horse-themed decorations) and Judith Sawyer ran the betting table where people could put down a few bucks on their favorites. Lewis said the locals thought luck was with the only lady in the race, the filly Devil May Care, instead of

Neither horse placed, though, as Super Saver outran the pack on a sloppy, wet track. Myrt Pfannkuche picked the winner with a unique strategy. She looked at the jockey more than the horse.
“They told me (jockey Calvin Borel) had won two of the last three years. I thought, ‘Oh, nobody ever wins three
times,’ but he did,” Pfannkuche said.Immediately following the race, the
attention turned to the ladies’ hats as the women congregated in the center of the dining area to find out who was wearing the most striking headpiece.
The entrants’ hats ran the gamut in size, style and color. Some featured flowers; others had ribbons and bows as the most striking feature. Most of the
ladies either dug deep in the back of their closets to find a suitable hat or borrowed one from a friend.
A few men even got in on the action, highlighted by the straw hat featuring a plastic horse on the brim and phony dollar bills stuffed in the ribbon.
Each woman received a certificate of participation, and the three winners got framed certificates. Pat Pace won top

That was followed by a buffet-style dinner featuring such delectables as pork medallions with rosemary sauce, grilled chicken with mushrooms, prime rib, assorted vegetables, pecan pie with bourbon whipped cream and chocolate cake.
The fun was only getting started,
though. The party continued well into the evening with music provided by Johnny Click.
This gave party-goers the opportunity to participate in a bop contest, dance contest and a karaoke contest; winners were recognized with prizes.
It was yet another great social event for the club which is among the area’s
oldest. “It’s grown so much. Next year will be our 25th anniversary, and we still have some of our original members here,” Bentley said.
For its longtime members, Pine Harbor has become a home that beats “My Old Kentucky Home” any day.

Old-style roses in shades of pinks and red and bundles of blooming hydrangeas fitted around flagstone paths and brick walks surround this English Tudor house, in perfect sync to create an elegant lakeside home.
At the top of one of Lake Logan Martin’s magnificent hillsides, the home Bill and Laura Waldrip chose looks out toward the waters known as Clear Creek on the water-way’s Talladega County side.

The Waldrips’ home is nestled in a secluded setting, reached by a narrow lane winding through woodsy hills.
The front entry is edged in brick and stone with arched pillars and an arched front door.
The foyer is central to the three-level home, and a two-level stairway leads upstairs.
Floors are hardwood, topped with intricately patterned Oriental rugs with touches of earth tones and terracotta.
An English clock stands tall in the foyer. It dates to 1826 and still works, even the decorative piece on top featuring a swan swimming back and forth across a pond.
A favorite painting greets guests in the foyer. It’s a portrait of the Waldrips’ dog, Annie, found while the Waldrips were building their first lake home just across the water.
The story of finding Annie leads into a conversation about how the Waldrips found the house they now call home.
They enjoyed a waterfront view of the house while out on their boat, and every time the Waldrips passed by, Laura Waldrip said she would “ooh and ah” over it.
“I loved it,” she said, “the house, the dock, everything.”One day, friend Nina Overton called Laura Waldrip to
give her some news: “She said, ‘your house is on the market.’”That was all it took, and the Waldrips were soon taking a
The home Bill and Laura Waldrip fell in love with is now theirs. The Waldrips admired it from the water, and when they found out it was for sale, decided to make a move eight years ago.

close look at the property, previously a builder’s home. The couple happened to have friends visiting from England
at the time, and Waldrip, who was perfectly content with the home they had already built across the lake, made them promise “not to say a word” to encourage his wife’s reaction to the house.
It turned out that after the tour, Waldrip was sold on the house as well and made a joke getting into the car to leave.
Sensing everyone was in agreement about the house, Waldrip joked “Wasn’t that a tacky place,” knowing what laid ahead — buy-ing the house.
Now, the Waldrips and Annie have loved their house for eight years and are happy to show visitors why.
To the left of the foyer is a room the original designer des-ignated as a bedroom, but which the Waldrips have altered to suit their needs as a study.
In it are cushioned chairs and a desk and lots of bookshelves to hold Laura Waldrip’s volumes of cookbooks and books on antiques, a love she has turned into a business through the years.
Once the director of nursing for surgery at Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham, Laura Waldrip now owns French Market Antiques in Birmingham’s Southside area.
French styles are her favorite, evident throughout the Waldrips’ rambling home.
The study and the foyer give entry to the living room, a large open space with a series of floor-to-ceiling tiered windows set against a vaulted ceiling with aged, exposed beams.
A brick fireplace with an arched top and broad hearth are on one side of the living room, where a coffee-colored leather wing chair and oversized leather ottoman offer a cozy spot for visiting, along with a soft couch covered in sage-colored fabric, and a pair of plump leather armchairs flank a fir-topped table.
An iron-based chandelier hangs overhead, fitted with six lan-tern-style sconces.
A double-doored oak armoire in a corner holds electronics. To the right of the foyer and living room, a broad kitchen
features brick floors and white tile countertops. Polished cabinetry matches molding around a large arched window that overlooks the lake.
An antique table serves as an island in the center, and copper cookware hangs overhead from a wrought iron holder.
A favorite find of Laura Waldrip’s, a carved French buffet probably made in the 1840s, has found new life in the kitchen as a server. On the wall above is a collection of six prints of cattle.
A dining area, an alcove surrounded with windows and fur-nished with a table and seating for six, adjoins the kitchen. An armoire in the dining area is from Mrs. Waldrip’s great-grandmoth-er, and offers a place to show pieces of her mother’s blue-and-white-patterned china, along with another of her favorite finds in France, a confit jar once used for preserving duck.
The living room is open and airy, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a high vaulted ceiling.

An expansive porch opens from the dining area, where the Waldrips and their friends take in the Logan Martin view while relaxing at the dining tables or on chaise lounges.
A formal dining room in front of the kitchen has been refitted as a billiard room. Wall hangings maintain the theme of French detail with a painting of a woman in a black dress and striped stockings Laura Waldrip describes as “just so French looking,” on one wall and a large map of France on a facing wall.
Laura Waldrip speaks from experience. She said she’s been to Paris 53 times, enjoying the market she finds for French pieces to bring back, both for her shop and for her home.
The master bedroom is on the main level, stretching along the opposite side of the living room just down a hall and through an arched entry.
The room is done in shades of sage and ivory, and a king-sized bed features an upholstered headboard topped with a hanging tapestry.
Pillows in floral fabrics are used over a white quilted cov-ering which is topped with a soft green silk comforter.
A vaulted ceiling and wall of windows that have a lake view give the room an open feel. Twin marble-topped tables with iron bases are used beside the bed, and an ornate walnut
armoire stands against a facing wall.A chaise lounge is covered in a moss green fabric and faces
an ivory upholstered armchair. The room holds another of Laura Waldrip’s favorite
things, a Chippendale chest on chest from late 18th century England she says she would never sell.
A 19th century French desk is another favorite piece, placed in front of the window in the bedroom. In all her travels finding antiques, she said she’s never seen another desk quite like it. Along with a glass paperweight from her father’s desk, the desk is where she displays a collection of glass perfume holders women wore in their bodices in the late 1800s.
Upstairs, two guestrooms are available for company, with a large bath in between.
The first is decorated in ivory with coral accents. A pair of slipper chairs sit in an alcove beside a window. A Dutch bench offers additional seating.
Another favorite piece of art, “Old Fashioned Fun,” hangs in the room. The scene is one from the Kentucky River near where Laura Waldrip grew up, showing an assortment of people enjoying boating and swimming on the waterway.
The bedroom is also the spot for her father’s desk, topped
The Waldrips’ kitchen is warm and inviting, with a brick floor and antiques throughout.

carved rice bed, with marble-topped tables on each side. The room also holds a French chest, another of Laura Waldrip’s finds, under-neath a window edged with white lace curtains.
A series of stairs leads from the porch on the rear of the main level to the back lawn and waterfront.
A brick walkway winds to the huge floating dock and deck area where the Waldrips’ deck boat is housed.
Waldrip says “this is my domain.” He was attracted to the dock and deck from the first time he saw the house from the water.
Waldrip is a broker for ERA Oxford Realty’s Greystone office, and the couple met 19 years ago through another friend in real estate.
The Waldrips says they’ve loved their spot on the lake since discovering it and its distinctive setting and design.
Waldrip lingers along the pier to the dock, eyeing the expanse of water and taking in the panoramic view.
Annie makes her way to her owner, trotting down the walk-way, and Waldrip reaches to give her a pat.
“She’ll go in the water sometimes,” he says, indicating he and his wife aren’t the only ones fond of the waterfront atmosphere.
Waldrip enjoys his time on the deck. It’s a great place for entertaining and relaxing, but also for some other pursuits.
“I even grew tomatoes out here last year,” he said.

Longtime lakeside residents are likely to be famil-iar with the Marina Grill, at Clear Creek Harbor on the Talladega side. They probably also will have noticed some recent changes, starting with the name. It is now called the Willow Grill. The name comes from the enormous willow tree in the back, which now has a deck built around it.
“We’ve had our license for about two weeks now,” according Angie Cooper, the new co-owner with her hus-band Roy Cooper. “I had been working for the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind, in the production and payroll department for the industries, but I left that to take over the grill. It was kind of a leap of faith. But it’s such a beautiful place. The previous owner passed away last year, and we’ve made it a family-run operation. I work with my husband, my son, his friends, my step-daughter and her husband. We got the small store and dairy, too, and we built a deck out back, right on the water. Anyone coming in from the lake will know that tree and know exactly when they are

The Coopers were already quite familiar with the facil-ity. “We live on Marina Drive, and we know (building own-ers) Joe and Mary Lee and Mary Jane and Bill Stanford, from Montgomery. Joe is the mayor of Moody.”
The building also boasts a store, which opens at 7 a.m. Tuesday-Sunday. The grill opens at 11 a.m., and closes at 7 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and Sundays and at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Breakfast is available starting at 7 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays only. Campers, trailers, sailboats, camping spots,
wet and dry boat storage and what Cooper calls “the most rea-sonable rates around” are also available.

We also serve grilled or fried chicken, fish sandwiches, patty melts on Texas toast, Philly cheesesteaks, Buffalo chicken, BLTs, hotdogs, corndogs and fried bologna, with fries or onion rings. Those are the baskets. We also have chicken fingers and chicken salad sandwich baskets.”
The plates available consist of one of four entrees with two sides and Texas toast, she continued. “On the plates, we

The Willow Grill offers what co-owner Angie Cooper describes as “the best burg-ers on the lake,” available with a variety of side items. Each burger weighs in at seven to eight ounces.
When dining on the lake, it only makes sense to enjoy a little fried fish with all the trimmings, such as this plate
from the Willow Grill. The fish is also available grilled.

he owners of Collector’s Showcase and Gate House Market utilize the magic of making something new out of something old to keep their customers coming back for more.
Diane Seals has created something of an oasis in the front yard of Collector’s Showcase on Cogswell Avenue between Pell City and Riverside. She has plants in various interesting pots interspersed with her most popular iron and wooden decorations that make any yard look like a well-loved garden.
Dianne Sartain used her skills from her days as a com-mercial property manager to make over her property right across the street from Seals, making the Gate House Market the place to shop for anyone with a lake house nearby or a Gulf-side condo along the beaches of Alabama and its neighboring states.
Seals has had her store open for 12 years, although she used to have an antiques shop in downtown Pell City in the late 1980s and 1990s. She said she wanted to continue the antiques business she began in town, but wanted a chance to cultivate her love of gardening as a means of adding to the services she can provide to her customers.
“This combines my two loves besides my family,” Seals said. “I love antiques and gardening, and I feel blessed for my job to be what I love. I’ve always loved pretty things and nature. I feel like I was put on this earth to do this.”
Seals said her parents were always collectors, and she followed in her grandparents’ footsteps by enjoying garden-ing. Her siblings and children have shown an interest, but her parents never seemed to have a green thumb and joke that it skipped a generation.
She said she finds pleasure in being among flowers, and the serenity of seeing so many different flowers allows her to enjoy helping her customers plan the best looks for their patios, porches and gardens.
Seals does not charge for her planting services. If a customer comes in with an interesting pot, she will only charge for her supplies and flowers used to fill the pot with plants she and the customer have decided will work well in the setting they have planned.
She uses reputable growers she believes she can trust after 12 years, and while the plants may cost more, she knows they will be healthy and more plants will come in each plot she buys.
The “pots” Seals has used have included bathtubs used in Hungarian orphanages during World War II and teak bowls, among other things. She said almost anything can be used to hold plants if you use moss and the right plants in it.
Seals has created some loyal customers over the years with her potting skills. She said she has planted pots from some customers every year for the past 12 years she has had the shop with the gardening items available outside.

A closer look at the items in front of Collector’s Showcase reveals metal flamingos, an iron crane flying in for a landing and scarecrows that suspiciously resemble Bill and Hillary Clinton. Any fish-related items are also popular with lakeside customers, and Seals is proud to carry Saigon pottery.
The iron items come from a provider Seals found in Mexico, and some of her most popular items include the crane and her iron arbors. She also looks for antique iron pieces if her customers express an interest in something they have seen else-where.
Her wooden pieces come from a man who has built things for her for 12 years. He builds everything from arbors to swings and Adirondack furniture to match the tastes of her customers.
“I love to start having spring items out, such as the flowers, as early as March,” Seals said. “I keep this going through the fall, and then at Christmas time I bring out Fraser firs and various Christmas trees. That way I keep things fresh out here almost year round. The look always changes as people see items and want to buy them. But the flowers naturally make anything look pretty.”
Sartain tries to cater to the eclectic tastes of her customers at Gate House Market by carrying everything from lake signs they could hang on their boathouse or lake house to decorative life preservers and wind twirlers that catch the eye wherever the new owner hangs them.

She said her wind chimes and bird feeders have been selling a lot as people want to get their patios and porches ready for spring and summer. Another popular item that can also come outdoors in a screened in porch or furnished boathouse is a candle with a scent that reminds customers of summer.
“A lot of people come in looking for beach items because they have a condo down on the Gulf,” Sartain said. “I carry just enough stuff that they can furnish their places by shopping here. They say I sell the items at much more affordable prices than they could find down there.”
The birdhouses can be hung from trees or placed on the porch, depending on how close homeowners want to bring nature into their outdoor entertaining. The windchimes sold heavily in May when Mother’s Day was approaching and customers were searching for perfect gifts.

years, but it took some revamping to get the property to where she needed it to be. Part of the building originally was a telephone substation, but she was able to make the proper-ty over into a quaint shop that also features a few stone items out front for customers who like to decorate their entire yard or garden.
Using her experience from almost two decades as a commercial property manager, Sartain believed not only could she make over the shop, but she could successfully run it with the help of some family and friends in the form of stocking suggestions. She buys things from the markets in Atlanta as well as estate sales and yard sales to stock her shop.
New items will sit right beside vintage items, and Sartain prides herself on being able to work with the vintage items to the point that the average customer could never tell the difference.
She enjoys the challenge of making over items into something new and finding ways to surprise her customers,

58 One step inside Sunrise on the Circle and a visitor can tell it is a special environment.
That’s the only hook most prospective resi-dents need, according to Gayle Sexton.
“They come in, they stay,” she said. It’s not difficult to see why. Sexton, a Leeds native who
worked 25 years as a lobbyist for nursing homes in Georgia, opened the assisted-living facility on Sunrise Circle in Pell City in the middle of May. By the end of the month, she had seven residents, and “numerous” inquiries from prospective ones.
“We feel like we won’t have any trouble being full by mid-summer,” Sexton said. “We’re looking for a waiting list.”
The residents there take pride in their home, particular-ly the porch area. Theresa Ellerson, a native of Norfolk, Va., came to Sunrise on the Circle because of her children.
“It’s very nice,” she said. “I’m very proud of it.”Ellerson can be found most days sitting on the
screened-in porch in the center of the facility. It faces a court-yard and a bubbling fountain.
Sexton calls the porch the best attribute of the facility.“(Theresa) loves this back porch,” Sexton said. “Of all

the things that I did, this porch was the greatest thing that we did.”
Sexton’s goal, she said, was gran-deur. The facilities on Sunrise Circle reflect that: The 16 rooms and four suites were designed with meticulous atten-tion to detail, and the common areas are all equipped with luxurious amounts of space.
“You can see it’s not your typical room,” she said. “You usually walk in and you squeeze around a little bed, and they’ve got a little chest of drawers. But that’s not what I wanted.”
The luxuries provided by the room are just one thing people look for in such
a facility, according to Sexton. “I think the first thing people ask
about is the food,” she said. “Several people who are a bit dissatisfied with the place they’re staying (said it) is because of the food.”
Sunrise is designed with a 1,100-square-foot kitchen — “larger than most apartments,” according to Sexton — and the cook is a native, Ann Virges.
“She’s been around Pell City all her life, cooking and baking,” Sexton said. “She’s really key — if you make people happy with your food, you’ve got your foot in the door. She’s a Southern cook, but she also cooks with a healthy flair.”
Other amenities — common areas, activity rooms, even a beauty salon — were done with meticulous attention to detail.
“We didn’t cut any corners,” she said. “We didn’t put any junk in this place; we bought really nice medicine cabinets. All that stuff matters.”
As for her staff, Sexton says every-one has at least has earned the rank of Certified Nurse Assistant.
“We don’t have to have nurses and medical employees, but I chose to,” she said.
Residents bring in their own fur-niture. In the case of those like Ellerson,
The dining room at Sunrise on the Circle is over 1,100 square feet, allowing enough
space for residents to have their families
over for meals.
Theresa Ellerson spends most of her days on the
screened-in porch at Sunrise on the Circle.
Gayle Sexton says she used almost all of her own furniture to furnish the luxurious rooms at Sunrise on the Circle.
A former lobbyist for nursing homes in the state of Georgia, Gayle Sexton worked more than a year in the construction of Sunrise on the Circle, located just off 19th Street in Pell City.

they bring along their special friends, as well. “I have my parakeet, Chip,” she said.
“He’s a beautiful blue parakeet. You don’t see many of those around.
“He was given to me as a gift.”It’s all about quality of life, according to
Sexton.“We call it ‘life lived well,’” she said.
“What we’ve said for most of the families who come in, we think the end of the life is for quality, more than quantity.
“We wanted everybody to have the nic-est we could put together; we wanted every-body to feel like home, or better than home. We tried to think of everything we could to make them feel at home.

Whether you watch from the water, from inside the park or from any one of so many spots on Logan Martin Lake that offer a great view, it’s an outstanding event to experi-ence.
Pell City’s yearly Fourth of July Celebration brings out hundreds of people for the occasion, with an all-out fireworks extravaganza that’s always a hit.
The park fills up early for the celebration, but good “seats” abound with the park’s 65 acres of space.
The park’s boat launch area inside the park is a popular spot for viewing the event, but so are the city’s ball fields located behind the Pell City Civic Center, which are across the lake from the boat launch area.
Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged and so is the “bring the whole family” concept.
The display begins at dark, about 7:30 p.m. and the show con-tinues for approximately an hour. The 2010 fireworks event will be held on July 4, this year, a Sunday.
The event is free, an occasion hosted by the city.
