Algoma Fish and Game Club Children’s Fish Day: The Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore Foundation was the presenting sponsor of the Algoma Fish and Game Club 2nd Annual Children’s Fish Day at Hiawatha Park. The event was held on Sunday, October 6th from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. The event was free for children 14 and under and they got a chance to try fishing and catching a live fish which they got to take home.

Also on hand were the Ministry of Natural Resources showing them how to make their own lures, the Fish Hatchery demonstrating the proper way to clean a fish, Sault Search and Rescue conducted lessons on how to cast your line, and the Sault Archery Club were showing how to shoot a bow and arrow and children actually got to try it out. It was a great afternoon and the weather cooperated with clear skies and sunshine. It is estimated that the attendance was in excess of 500 and from all reports the afternoon was a huge success. Kiwanis was on hand with an information table and display to promote our work in the community.

There were a few highlights of the evening. One being the presentation of a Mel Osborne posthumously presented to DP Ford Upton and accepted by his children Jonathan Upton and Sarah Haimerl. This award recognized the dedication, passion and commitment to the club and the children of our community whom we serve one child at a time. Another is the presentation of the Kiwanian of the Year award to both Treasurer PP Gord Henderson and PP Terry Lou Legros.

Congratulations to both deserving members. I couldn’t help posting DLG Bill Morton’s photo with his Distinguished Service award for his many years of selling Maple Syrup and donating the proceeds back to the club amongst many other projects he volunteers for. Congratulations Bill. Congratulations to IPP Dave on a great year and getting a gift of a beautiful picture. Kiwanis Trivia Night: On October 24th our fall Kiwanis Trivia Night took place with a record number of 39 tables and 301 players. The evening was dedicated to DP Ford Upton for his dedication as head judge since 2005. Peter Hewgill did the honor of being head judge and did an awesome job at striking the gavel. Here are a few photos for your enjoyment.

Induction of two members:

In October, our club inducted Lenord Alfred and Larry Whalen. Here is what Lenord said about joining the club. "I would like to take this opportunity to thanks Kiwanis for my recent induction into the organization. Recently I relocated to Sault Ste. Marie for retirement and was given an overview from a member (Kiwanian Wenda) of what Kiwanis was doing for the community. With a focus dedicated primarily to helping improve the quality and enjoyment of life for children in the community as well as the seniors on occasion, I was convinced I wanted to help and contribute. Since my arrival I have been welcomed by everyone and have had a feeling of belonging almost immediately, I thank you all."

Staples Back To School Program with KC of Lakeshore: The Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore and Staples had a very successful “Back to School Program” this year, collecting over $5,100 in donations (in-store) and from the Kiwanis BBQ event. This money was then turned into school supplies to be shared between four schools (two from each of the Algoma District School Board and the Huron Superior Catholic District School Board).

North Branch Library Donation: We are so happy to be a Silver Pillar supporter of the Children's Area at the new North Branch Library! Public libraries are an important community hub that serves all members of the community, especially young children! Be sure to go check out the new space!

www.lakeshorekiwanis.com Kiwanis Seniors Bingo Nov 4th:

Kiwanis members prepared two loaves of sandwiches and donated them towards the lunch which was then prepared by the volunteers on the day of the event. We also served cake for dessert. 12 games of bingo with cash prizes were distributed to the winners with payouts of $25 or $30 per game. This Bingo was supported by 115 seniors in our community at the Senior Citizens Drop-In Centre.

River View Public School Pancake Breakfast Nov 9: Our Kiwanis members made pancakes and the Grade 8 students served the breakfast in the school’s gymnasium. This program was held from 9 to 1 p.m. This was joint project with our members and the Grade 8 students to raise funds for their school trip in June 2020. The event was very successful with over $900.00 raised.

www.lakeshorekiwanis.com Days For Girls production day Nov 23:

This past week, several members of the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore and the Aktion Club of Lakeshore volunteered with Sault Ste. Marie Days for Girls. Sault Ste. Marie Days for Girls products are washable and reusable feminine hygiene kits. These kits help empower girls dignity, safety, education, every girl, everywhere, Period. The cost is $15 to support the distribution of a kit to a woman in a developing nation. Kits afford women the opportunity to attend school/work when they have their period. They can last up to 3 years.

Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre (CBHC): Members of the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore and the Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie attended the grand opening of the “Kiwanis Korner of Environmental and Ecology Exhibits” on Thursday, November 29th, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. The highlight was the grand opening of the Invasive Species Exhibit and on hand were their newly appointed Executive Director, Sarah Rang and Business Development & Communications Manager, Deborah Sparks.

The two Kiwanis clubs partnered and donated $15,000 to help redevelop this area and make a new home for this very educational exhibit. There are lots of interesting exhibits for everyone to enjoy. Congratulations to the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre for housing this exhibit and developing it as part of their overall experience. Many school children visit the CBHC throughout the school year as part of their field trip studies.
