n PROGRAM OVERVIEW This program is designed to help

with the growing concerns over character education and the decline of family involvement in the child’s development of these skills. n MATERIALS **See material budget page!

Each classroom needs a container for each of the seven habits and rocks or beads to collect when these habits are shown. All of the supplies can be found at the dollar store and uniquely devised for your classroom theme. For example, one teacher did flowers as her theme for the year, so she had flower pots with a different color rock for each theme. As the children are caught using the habits they may place one of the rocks in the larger flower pot. When the pot is filled the children are allowed to vote on a celebration. Celebrations require supplies like treats, snacks, and activity rewards like bubbles or game supplies. The materials needed are truly varied by each teacher and their class.

In addition to the material and information included in the following pages, there is more available by contacting the Program Developers.

n ABOUT THE DEVELOPERS Shannon Moats – Shannon has

been teaching for 11 years in the Polk County school system. She has taught kindergarten through second grade with a focus on the children needing remedial help. Currently she teaches the Pre-First class at Dr. NE Roberts Elementary, which is designed for the students that are not ready for first grade, but need a different curriculum than the same thing they received in their kindergarten class. Mrs. Moats believes in alternative teaching methods such as song and dance, and kinesthetic learning.

Becki Martin – Becki has been teaching for 16 years in Polk County. She has taught a variety of grade levels including high school and middle school social studies and currently is teaching at the Elementary level. Becki has taught fourth and first grade at this level and enjoys first grade because you can see how much a child grows from coming in knowing a few words to reading an entire book by the time they leave. Using character education is extremely important to Mrs. Martin because she not only wants to have good students but have well-rounded children that will carry wonderful habits with them for the rest of their life.

“Seven Habits of Our Radical Rockets” S. Moats & B. MartinLesson Plan No 1: What are the Seven Habits?

n SUBJECTS COVEREDCommunication, Writing

n GRADESKindergarten - Fifth Grade

n OBJECTIVES Children will learn the seven habits over the course of two weeks.

n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS

Student Data Logs:MA.A.2.1.1 – number systems

MA.D.2.1.2 – graphing real world numbers

MA.E.1.1.1 – data analysis

Character Education:SS.C.2.1.1 – The student understands

the role of the citizen in American democracy.

1. Knows the qualities of a good citizen (e.g. honesty, courage)

2. Knows that responsibility is duty to do something or not to do something.

3. K n o w s t h e s o u r c e s o f responsibil i ty, examples of situations involving responsibility, and some of the benefits of fulfilling responsibilities.

HE.B.3.1.1-3.1.8 – healthy ways to handle feelings and interpersonal skills

Writing and Setting Goals:LA.B.2.1.1-2.1.4 – communication

through writing

n MATERIALS1) Rocks of 7 different colors (purple,

blue, pink, yellow, orange, green, and red)

2) Containers to hold the rocks

3) “Class Thermometer” container - a larger pitcher or container that indicates graduated measurements works best.

4) Various trade books to reinforce the habit through literature

n DIRECTIONS • Each grade level will come up with

mini-lessons for the seven habits to teach reason and relevance of the habit. Each lesson should include either a role-play or storybook to coincide with the habit.

• Spend two days teaching and role-playing the habit.

• Introduce colored stone and graphics for the habit.

• Start “catching” the students using this habit and allow them to place a stone in the goal vessel.

Habits and their color:#1 – Be proactive

#2 – Begin with the end in mind

#3 – Put first things first

#4 – Think win/win

#5 – Seek first to understand - then to be understood

#6 – Synergize

#7 – Sharpen the saw

n EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT

GOAL: Within two weeks have a class spirit flag made with a class motto. We will be celebrating our first “Sharpen the Saw” party with all pilot classes. In the sharpen the saw party we will be doing a synergy lesson on working together to make our cupcakes. We will also be sharing our class flags and doing a Numbered Heads Together* exercise with the seven habits using the flags in the middle of the tables.

* Based on Kagan structures.

We monitor students by collection of different colored rocks into group containers and then we pour our group containers into a “Class Thermometer” container. The “Class Thermometer” has several levels and at each level reached by the class a class reward is given. The more rocks they collected the bigger the reward.

n SUBJECTS COVEREDThis lesson encompasses the social

skill covered by the habit “Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood.” Along with social skills, this lesson incorporates reading and writing.

n GRADESThis lesson can be used in

kindergarten through fifth grades with minor adjustments to the teacher’s involvement and the difficulty of the writing assignment.

n OBJECTIVES The students will better understand

the habit of “Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood,” through a trade book story. The students will further develop their understanding of the social skill through a writing prompt at the end of the lesson.

n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS

LA.A.2.1 – student constructs meaning from text

LA.B.2.1 – students write to communicate ideas and information effectively

LA.C.1.1 – students use listening strategies

SS.C.2.1 – students understands the role of the citizen

n MATERIALS• trade book – “Hey, Little Ant” by: Phillip and Hannah Hoose ISBN# 0-439-09816-5

• writing supplies

• chart paper

• markers

n DIRECTIONS Have the children listen to the story,

“Hey, Little Ant.” In upper grades the children could read it silently. Stop for reading comprehension questions. After the story has been read, have the children brainstorm the different feelings the characters had during the story. Chart the students’ responses. Have the children return to their seats and write about what they think will happen next in the story, since the author left the ending open. Let children share their writings. Discuss how this will impact the habit the children are learning about, “Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood.”

“Seven Habits of Our Radical Rockets” S. Moats & B. MartinLesson Plan No 2: Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood

n EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT Through the day find the children

showing this new character habit, and reward them by letting them put a rock in their collection containers (as explained previously).

Mini-Lessons for the Seven Habits

Habit One – Be ProactiveResponsibility for me and my actionsDemonstrate to the students that one way to be proactive is to come into the classroom and do the following without being asked or reminded.

1. Take out daily folder, agenda, and homework

2. Put away book bag

3. Make a lunch selection

4. Begin BRAIN BREAKFAST

***Ask 3 before me***Books – Berenstein Bears Clean my Room

Habit Two – Begin with the End in MindPlan Ahead – Set GoalsModel that the student may read for an AR test, study spelling words, begin/finish other assignments when work is complete without being asked to do so.

Habit Three – Put First Things FirstSelf DisciplineExplain that coming home from school and beginning homework first is putting first things first and then maybe leaving the nightly reading for later in the evening after bed.

Habit Four – Think WIN/WINEveryone WinsShow that when studying math cards, spelling words, or completing word scrambles with a partner, everybody wins.

Habit Five – Seek First to Understand, then be UnderstoodCommunicationUse role playing to demonstrate the correct ways to behave in school and show why some choices are not the best.***Monster Activity*** Perfect for the beginning of the school year.

Habit Six – SynergizeTeamworkHave the students work as a group to clean up the classroom – put together a puzzle to show it is faster and more efficient.

Habit Seven – Sharpen the SawRelaxationExplain to students that the benefit of working hard all day is extra PAT (preferred activity time) at the end of the day… if behavior permits.***Cut out picture of a saw – use vis a vis markers to write the name of the students that deserve the PAT.
