First Sunday of Lent

February 18, 2018

On Ash Wednesday the church began its journey toward baptismal immersion in the death and

resurrection of Christ. This year, the Sundays in Lent lead us to focus on five covenants God makes in

the Hebrew Scriptures and to use them as lenses through which to view baptism. The baptismal

covenant is made with us individually, but the new life we are given in baptism is for the sake of the

whole world.

Inspired by Christ,

living and growing in faith,

we are a loving and open community

of worship, witness, and service in God’s world.

Apostolic

Greeting

Gathering Following the call of God’s Spirit, the community of faith gathers,

welcoming one another and praying for God’s mercy to fill the church and the world.

We invite you to use the prelude time to prepare your heart and mind for worship.

Prelude - H. Schroeder

Psalm 25 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.

My God, I put my trust in you; let me not be put to shame, nor let my

enemies triumph over me.

Let none who look to you be put to shame; rather let those be put to shame who are

treacherous.

Show me your ways, O LORD, and teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you

have I trusted all the day long.

Remember, O LORD, your compassion and love, for they are from

everlasting.

Remember not the sins of my youth and | my transgressions; remember me

according to your steadfast love and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD.

You are gracious and upright, O LORD; therefore you teach sinners in

your way.

You lead the lowly in justice and teach the lowly your way.

All your paths, O LORD, are steadfast love and faithfulness to those

who keep your covenant and your testimonies.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen

Oh, Jesus, I Have Promised ELW #810

Verse 1 All, vs 2 Women, vs 3 Men & vs 4 All

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of

the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: And also with you.

Throughout this season we embrace the discipline of Lent including self-

examination and repentance. Therefore, let us come before God with open

hearts.

Words of

Absolution

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no

secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy

Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Christe, christe eleison

P: Most merciful God,

C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We

have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have

done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our

whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the

sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us,

and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and

made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the

name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen

you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts

through faith.

C: Amen.

P: Holy God, heavenly Father, in the waters of the flood you saved the

chosen, and in the wilderness of temptation you protected your Son from

sin. Renew us in the gift of baptism. May your holy angels be with us,

that the wicked foe may have no power over us, through Jesus Christ,

Children’s Message

Imposition of Ashes Although Ash Wednesday traditionally marks the beginning of Lent in the Western

Church, certain church orders suggest that ashes be used on the First Sunday in

Lent. This morning we invite those who were not able to attend Ash Wednesday

service to come forward to receive ashes as a sign of a renewed Lenten discipline.

Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth. May

these ashes be a sign of our mortality and penitence, reminding us

that only by the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ are we given eternal

life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

Dust and Ashes Brian Wren/ David Haas

Dust and ashes touch our face, mark our failure and our falling.

Holy Spirit, come, walk with us tomorrow,

take us as disciples, washed and wakened by your calling.

Take us by the hand and lead us,

lead us through the desert sands, bring us living water, Holy Spirit, come.

Dust and ashes soil our hands-- greed of market, pride of nation.

Holy Spirit, come, walk with us tomorrow,

as we pray and struggle through the meshes of oppression.

Dust and ashes choke our tongue in the wasteland of depression.

Holy Spirit, come, walk with us tomorrow

through all gloom and grieving to the paths of resurrection.

Reading 8God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9“As for me, I am establishing my

covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10and with every living creature

that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with

you, as many as came out of the ark. 11I establish my covenant with you, that never

again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be

a flood to destroy the earth.” 12God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I

make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future

generations: 13I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant

between me and the earth. 14When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen

in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every

living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to

destroy all flesh. 16When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the

everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the

earth.” 17God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established

between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Lenten Verse

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourth chapter.

C: Glory to you, O Lord.

Gospel In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the

Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn

apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven,

“You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” And the Spirit

immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days,

tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news[a] of

God,[b] 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;[c]

repent, and believe in the good news.”

P: The Gospel of our Lord.

C: Praise to you, O Christ.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

On the third day he rose again;

Prayers of the Church P: Renewed in the promises of baptism, let us pray for the church, the world,

and all who are in need.

C: hear our prayer. P: Into your hands, God of abundant grace, we commend all for whom we

C: Amen.

I Want Jesus to Walk With Me Raymond Haan

I want Jesus to walk with me; all along my pilgrim journey,

Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

In my trials, Lord, walk with me; when my heart is almost breaking,

Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

When I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me; when my head is bowed in sorrow,

Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.
