    with 50.8 square miles of lake and 520 miles of shore

    group is very influenced by the lake, because we are loto the lake and have experienced it first hand. We ha

    Early History

    ● James B. Duke saw potential in the Carolinas for the textile in

    wanted to use the Catawba as a source of energy

    ● Came into contact with Dr. W. Gill Wylie in their search for info

    about hydroelectric power

    ● Wylie introduced Duke brothers to William S. Lee, an enginee

    to with the Catawba Power Company to build dams

    ● The formation new dam would flood homes, farms, and entir

    as a small riverside village known as Long Island

    Developing Lake Norman

    ● Lake Norman received it’s named from Duke Power’s retired

    Norman Atwater Cocke● The lake had been predicted to be an inland sea and the end

    miles long and eight miles wide at its widest point

    ● Lake Norman has a surface area of 32,500 acres and it has a 5

    shoreline

    ● The lake is 130 feet deep at its deepest point and contains 3.4gallons of water.
