PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE!!After all my minor health issues last month, I thought finally I can get back on the water. After not being able to fish the March tournament, I was really looking forward to getting out to fish the June tournament. The ensuing weather conditions put a halt to that. However, that is ok. I’ll now have time to install my new I pilot. Something more to look forward to. !I have not been on the lake much. However, I have done some fishing on the White River with a guide, Danny Barker of Buffalo City Guide Service. I learned a bunch about fishing with both fly rod and spinning rod. !So, the weather forecast looks good for the rescheduled tournament date on June 25th. See you on the water. John Gerard !!!!We have a lot of new members and striper fishing on Lake Norfork can be very frustra<ng so I am going to preach some. Eleven years ago I showed up here and shortly therea@er joined this club in its first year of existence. I had some striper fishing experience on Beaver Lake and so I tried some Beaver Lake tac<cs here with a liDle success and plenty of frustra<on. Some might say that catching that first striper was my downfall because I have been hooked ever since. Part of the aDrac<on besides the obvious baDle they give you is figuring out how to catch them, it is not easy. So why did I join this club? Probably for the same reasons as most of you. At first I wanted to learn how to catch stripers. So I aDended the mee<ngs and it was like pulling teeth geJng very specific informa<on. But that is what you have to do, don’t wait for someone to tell you, seek them out and pry out any info you can. I, for one, try to respond the best I can. This actually gets to the second reason I joined the club, camaraderie. I enjoy telling and listening to fish stories. Otherwise why have the club? Also, besides aDending the mee<ngs, go to the weigh-‐ins and ask the par<cipants where and how they caught their fish although you might get a lot of “the big got away” stories. Since our tournaments cost almost nothing, that is what they are really about, some more of that club camaraderie and if you par<cipate in the tournament besides possibly winning you might even win a new rod and reel whether you catch any fish or not. (con<nued on page 4)
CAPTAIN RON’S FISHING REPORT
Capt. Ron, continued from page 3…. !!I started the email messages hoping to keep people informed between meetings because those darn stripers just don’t hang around in the same places all of the time. A lot of members, especially from outside our local area have joined our club just to get those current Bishing reports for the one or two times a year they vacation here. But this message board is only as good as the Bishing reports we get. New members especially want to know where and how to catch that elusive striper. I know that we hate to give away our “honey holes” but few of us rely on striper Bishing for our living and I get almost as much satisfaction out of someone else catching their Birst striper. And with stripers those “honey holes” move around a lot anyway so keep those reports coming in. For you beginners, hang in there. As I said earlier, it is not easy catching stripers, it takes a lot of time on the water. While you are on the water, do as I have done, pay attention to other striper Bishermen from afar. Some guides don’t like it if you are too close and for a few guides that means anywhere within sight. For them it is their livelihood. But noticing other striper Bishermen should give you a good ideal that stripers are in the area and that is really the very hardest part to striper Bishing. I am not sure but it seems to me that when a lot of boats congregate the stripers move away some so I will start looking a little farther out and that has paid off many times. However, as we precede into the hotter months the boats won’t matter because the stripers will be deep enough that the surface activity won’t matter much. !But, if you want to be a striper fisherman, hope must spring eternal. A good friend of mine moved here and he didn’t catch a striper for six months but he sure tried hard. But he was on the water trying day a@er day and he finally figured it out. More recently a new club member was trying hard to catch stripers without success. He joined the club and picked up the info he needed to go and slay those stripers. No one catches stripers every <me out but if we get back home in one piece it should have been a great day. I have been here eleven years and this is s<ll the most beau<ful place I know. I watch the eagles, deer, ducks, geese, turkeys, etc.. That friend I men<oned said there was only one other place as good as here but he couldn’t afford to live there. Sadly his ashes are now in the lake as mine probably will be someday but un<l then I plan on catching some more stripers, maybe even that BIG ONE that didn’t get away. !See you on the water, Ron !
