Please refer to your By-Laws booklet to see what being a “Board Member” entails. WHAT’S INSIDE... Summer at Lake Carroll is looking very promising for all activities. There is something I think I say at this time every around the 4th of July weekend activities. “I have never seen as many walkers, joggers, and bikers on our LC roadways!” While driving around I observed groups of up to 8 walkers, with many walking side by side out into the lane and some texting while they were walking. And some not giving the courtesy to get into single file for passing vehicles. I mention to some that it is recommended to walk or run against traffic so they can see what’s coming towards them (rather than being surprised by what comes up from behind). I was so glad to hear that Security had no reported accidents or injuries for the entire extended holiday weekend. Here are a few more safety tips for the rest of the summer. FOR OUR RUNNERS/JOGGERS/WALKERS: - Wear bright or light colors when on the roads. - Travel facing oncoming traffic and stay close to the outside edge of the road, especially if vehicles are approaching from both directions. - Try to keep close together. Many times I have driven around a winding turn only to see walkers side by side across the road…not very smart. FOR BICYCLISTS: - Wear bright or light colors when on the roads. - Travel with traffic and stay as close as safely possible to the outside edge of the road, especially if vehicles are approaching from both directions. - Bicyclists must obey all vehicle laws. Property owners, please provide these safety tips to your guests who love being out on our roads and enjoying our scenic views. Make sure they know your last name and full address (Section/Lot & Street name). You could even have a little slip of paper or a card with this information on it for them to carry with them. Many times while out on NW patrol I have stopped to help a walker/jogger that was lost and only knew the first name of the property owner they were visiting. I guess they may have been guests of the guests. You can see how this can be a problem. Trying to locate someone’s house by stating “the owners are an older couple and I think the man’s name is Bill” doesn’t get them back to where they started from. Being a member of the LC Safety Committee I am involved with our Rules and Regulations in support of our Security Dept. I would like to emphasize that Security is out there to assist our residents and their guests. Recently we have reviewed statistics regarding accidents and citation violations, etc. It was no surprise that out of the accidents that occurred on the ATV trails last year up to now, only one was a member, the rest were guests. One injury was serious enough to be airlifted to a hospital. Also the majority of our violations involving jet skis/wave runners were guests. Owners are responsible for violations that their guests are involved in. Citations go to the property owners. A new State law implemented in January 2015 requires an orange flag be attached to the highest point of a watercraft helm from the time a skier/tuber exits the watercraft to the time they reenter the watercraft. When a skier/tuber is down (in the water) the attached orange stays up, but a second orange must be raised and waved by the spotter, or someone on the boat. I have noticed people are responding well to this new law and our LC rule. I have observed some boats keeping the orange flag attached when they were not towing someone. I also observed a boater using the State required flag as their Skier Down flag. This is a citable offence as two flags are required for two specific reasons. Management and Security know that this new law is confusing and they understand that it will take some time for people to adjust. The boat patrol has been busy letting people know about the law and rules and explaining their purposes when necessary. In upcoming issues of our LC newspaper you will be seeing articles by different authors talking about ATV/UTV users on our LC trail recommending completing an online ATV/UTV safety courses. This request for the safety course is only on a volunteer basis at this time. Security, while on patrol and conducting their trail vehicle checks, will also ask drivers if they have taken a safety course. This will be for logging stats. Online sites vary and we feel if you take one and receive a safety course certificate, that will work. Our goal is SAFETY. There will be much more on this topic in the future. Have a great summer (what’s left of it) and be safe. Illinois State Mandatory Helm Flag $12.00 / each Must be mounted from the time some to be towed exits the watercraft, to the time they re-enter. The boat patrol officers, have asked me to clarify the new State of Illinois regulation of the use of an orange flag while towing a skier or tuber. This flag should only be flown when your water craft is towing someone behind your watercraft. This flag is not meant to be flown at all times, only when towing. The flag does not need to be flown when the watercraft is anchored. When the flag is flown at all times it defeats the purpose of utilizing the flag in the first place. The July 4th weekend went well from a Security standpoint. The weather was fantastic and the amenities on the 3rd and 4th were as busy as I have ever seen them. Considering the amount of people that were on site, there were very few complaints filed. The lake was extremely busy and the boat patrol officers were also pleased with the lake participants. No accidents were reported on the trail or the lake. During the 4th of July weekend the Secu-rity Department issued 11 citations and 54 verbal and written warnings, checked 48 fishing licenses and creel limits, checked 2538 vehicles at the gate, marinas and pool, checked 214 ATV’s, and assisted 11 boats. I would like to thank the LCA Members and their guests for being patient and understanding over a very busy weekend. When using the marinas during the summer months, please consider carpooling on the weekends, at times due to the amount of people enjoying our lake, space can be limited at the marinas. Let me remind everyone, FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL at Lake Carroll. In addition, it is not courteous to other Members, whether it’s because you’re interrupting their quiet evening or disturbing their pets. You “fun time” can cause unnecessary stress for others. If you choose to light fireworks; you will be issued a citation. Fishing at the marinas is a popular pastime during the summer. When fishing off the docks at the East and West Marinas, please be considerate of other people who are not fishing. Give them room to get where they are going; try not to leave too much equipment lying on the docks that can block their path. I always receive complaints from boat owners at the marinas stating disregarded line, lures and hooks being left on buoy ropes or boat covers. This is not only inconsiderate, but dangerous to the boat owner. When fishing from the docks, you can-not fish from a boat moored at the marinas unless you own the boat. This will be considered trespassing and you could be cited. I would like to wish all the property owners and their guests a safe and enjoyable summer season and DON’T’ FORGET YEILD TO YELLOW!!! If you have any questions, complaints or compliments, please feel free to contact me at (815) 493-2552 ext.18 or e-mail me at [email protected]. If the Security Department can be of any assistance to you, we may be contacted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (815) 493-2599. Did You Know: All piers, docks, boat lifts and swim platforms must have section and lot numbers and reflective devices above the waterline and visible from the lake. This informa-tion is located in the LC Rules & Regulations: Title V: Chapter 53.07 (D). Did You Know: All garbage receptacles must be returned to residence within 24 hours of garbage pickup. All garbage must be placed in a proper receptacle to avoid the garbage be-ing distributed throughout the area by local wildlife. Moring Disposal offers receptacles and residential curbside garbage service that will return your receptacles to your property. This information is located in the LC Rules & Regulations: Title V: Chapter 53.06 (F). Did You Know: It is illegal to let your dog or cat roam freely at Lake Carroll. Please be courteous with you neighbors. Even if they are not at their Lake Carroll residence your pets should not be making a mess on their property. Please review these rules regarding pets in the LC Rules & Regulations: Title V: Chapter 53.06 (H). ATV SAFETY – please don’t allow your visitors to go out ALONE on the trail with your ATV. You should be with them. The last six accidents on our trail system involved visitors. Our trail system is not a race track and users go in both directions. Please stress safety to anyone using your machines. Perhaps slower speeds could help reduce accidents on the trail. BE CAUTIOUS…SAFETY FIRST! HUNTNG - Hunting season begins October 1st for bow and arrow hunting here at Lake Carroll. You may see cars parked along the road. Cars belonging to hunters will display a hunter card on their dash indicating they are registered and approved to hunt in Lake Carroll. Use caution when using the trail or just walking through the woods during hunting season. One safety tip is for you to wear bright colored clothing such as blaze orange so you are easily seen by a hunter in their tree stand. WATERCRAFT ORANGE SAFETY FLAG – We would like to thank you for complying with the use of the two orange safety flags on your watercraft. Just to reiterate, the State flag is required to be mounted on the highest point of the helm from the time a person is exiting the watercraft to the time they reenter the watercraft. IN ADDITION to the State flag, the LC Skier Down Flag is still enforced and requires someone in the watercraft to raise and wave a second flag (not the State flag) when the person(s) being towed has fallen and is in the water and until they are again being towed. Do not display the State flag when you don’t have someone entering or exiting the watercraft for towing purposes. This can be very confusing to other boaters. For example, if you’re in Swimmers Bay or a no-wake area just chillin’ and people are swimming or floating around your boat, the State flag should not be displayed. You should, however, use caution if you have people floating on one of your towing device(s) that is tethered to your boat. Please keep the line short as other boats move in and out of the area could pass between you and the device and their propeller could catch your line and become entangled to your device. Watercraft pulling into no wake areas should use extreme caution to watch for swimmers, people floating, tethered floating devices, and of course anchor lines. Let’s all be safe out there!

Wow! How about those fireworks…they were the best ever. And that’s the report I’ve received from quite a few Members. We sat in our yard with friends and family and enjoyed the fabulous display. We also were on the lake on Friday night and enjoyed the display from the water. I’d like to say “Thanks!” to Mr. Cox for sharing his personal, professional display with the rest of us. We were so lucky to have two nights to appreciate the exhibits. The plan is that LCA will alternate the location between the dam and golf course. This is a good way to “share” the fireworks with those who have access to the lake and those who do not. When we have them at the dam, the parking lots are full from boat owners parked and using their boats on the lake to

view the display. That leaves little room for those who do not have boats to get “a good seat” for viewing. We know there are some Members disappointed when we don’t have it at the dam; but likewise, we have a lot of Members who want them set off from the golf course. We’re just trying to find a happy medium in alternating locations. I participated in the Ladies Invitational, and what a good time that was. Lake Carroll welcomed ladies from all over the area. Jason and his staff did a great job of setting up the program. I always appreciate visitors coming to Lake Carroll and see what we have to offer. You never know…they could buy a lot and become a member. I was requested to see if we could get a mail box to deposit outgoing mail. Maybe they were thinking as a former postmaster, I would have some clout. I contacted our Postmaster in Lanark and was not successful. She told me for the small amount of mail that the carrier would pick up would not justify a dismount. The carrier gets paid for every time he or she taps the box. It doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up and the Postal Service, as we know, is in the red. If you have outgoing mail, you can leave it at the Association office or at Trailside. These are regular stops and do not cost extra. Our “Lots to Offer” program is working well. Our General Manager is getting inquiries and we have sold a few lots. Check our website (golakecarroll.com) and view the lots available and enjoy the slideshow. Together we can keep Lake Carroll a great place to belong, live, and play!

A bobcat has been seen several times in Section 26 at the end of July. Pet owners should use caution when allowing their pets out. Though the bobcat prefers rabbits and hares, it will hunt anything from insects, chickens, geese and other birds, small ro-dents, deer, and other small animals. Prey selection depends on location and habitat, season, and abundance.Photo by Jim Blair (26-11)

Following is a synopsis of this month’s activities. I have identified those items that are of importance or that are not necessarily obvious. I have not in-cluded the normal day-to-day activities or those items that are covered by the Treasurer and others. Please also refer to the staff reports that have been provided. The order is by department/category.1. Report on directives from the June 26, 2015 BOD Meeting. a. As discussed at the June Board Meeting, I was contacted by Frontier Communications re-garding the .15 acre land lease for their building on Lake Carroll Blvd. in Section #3. The 25 year lease expires in March, 2016 and Frontier wishes to extend the lease for an additional 25 years. The lease, which began in 1991, required a one-time payment of $4,000.00. As discussed, I have in-formed Frontier that the new lease amount shall be $7,500.00. I have yet to hear back from Frontier regarding acceptance of our offer to be countered. 2. Administration: a. An updated copy of the Fixed Asset Expendi-tures – Cash Status report is included in the Board Packet under Treasurers Report. b. The Management Team and I have recently had several discussions regarding the use of pre-mium gas at the West Marina. My initial question was, why are we using higher priced, premium gasoline for Lake Carroll Owned vehicles and gasoline powered equipment like lawn mowers. Currently, we use approximately 4,750 gallons of premium gas per year for these vehicles and equip-ment. A 500 gallon gas tank is being installed at the Maintenance facility this month will be filled with regular gas, which will result in a savings of approximately $1,000.00 per year. There will be no cost for the above ground tank as long as we continue to purchase fuel from our current sup-plier, Saunders Oil. 3. Safe Workplace Committee & Cinci-Safe Pro-gram: a. The Safe Workplace Committee met on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Minutes from the meet-ing are attached to this report. 4. Sales of Lake Carroll Owned Lots: a. I continue to receive approximately three (3) inquiries per week regarding our Lot Sales pro-gram. Last week we sold our 6th lot since the pro-gram started this past March. A summary of these sales is attached to this report. 5. Accounts Receivable & Front Desk: (see attach-ments) a. See updated 2015 dues status report which is attached. -DPE’s collected thru 7/14/2015 – 1,977.58 -DPE’s collected thru 7/14/2014 – 2,002.22 -Variance between 2014 & 2015 – (24.64) -DPE’s budgeted for 2015 – 2,240.00 b. Sixteen Ownership transfer transactions were processed between June 21 and July 17, 2015. Seven of these transactions were homes and nine were for vacant lots. Two of the nine lots which were sold were Association owned lots. See at-tached spreadsheet summarizing the Lake Carroll owned lots sales. c. Through 7/15/2015, 537 Natural Gas Permit Fees have been deposited totaling $134,250.00. d. The third quarter billing statements which are due no later than July 31, 2015 were completed and mailed on 7/3/2015. e. Training for the two new part-time Front Desk Employee’s continued this month and Pam and Marcy are both doing very well. There is much to learn and both have demonstrated professionalism and quality customer service in their short time with Lake Carroll. 6. Finance & Human Resources: a. Finance: i. Financial Statements for June, 2015 have been completed and will be sent electronically to the Board prior to the June meeting. ii. The Gaming Machines generated $2,709.37 in income for Lake Carroll during the month of June, 2015. The budgeted amount for June was $2,200.00. Through June 30, 2015, year to date income is $5,204.78 vs. the year to date budget of $3,950.00. See attached report. b. Human Resource: i. No specific report 7. Safety & Security: a. The 4th of July Weekend went very well from a security standpoint. The weather was fantastic and the amenities on the 3rd and 4th were as busy as Luke has ever seen. Considering the amount of people that were on site, there were very few complaints filed. The lake was extremely busy and the boat patrol officers were also pleased with the lake participants. No accidents were reported on the trail or the lake. During 4th of July weekend the security department issued 11 citations and 54 verbal and written warnings, checked 48 fishing licenses and creel limits, checked 2538 vehicles at the gate, marinas and pool, checked 214 ATV’s and assisted 11 boats. b. Luke and several Members of our Security Staff attended joint training on July 14th with the Lanark fire department at the Lake Carroll pool. Water rescue techniques and proper extrication

were the topics. c. Luke and several Members of our Security Staff attended joint training with the Shannon fire department; they were experimenting with a water holding system to be used as a reservoir in case of a house fire. This training was conducted at the West Marina 8. Information Technology: a. No specific report 9. Communications: a. No specific report. 10. Facilities Management: a. The ATV trails have been very muddy this spring and summer due to the rains which many trail enthusiasts really enjoy. The tractor which is used to groom the trails has been in the shop un-dergoing some repairs so we hired Stuart Moll to use his tractor to groom the trails before the July 4th holiday weekend. We have also installed rock to a few areas to reinforce the trail in areas where erosion was very bad due to the rains. The shower house at the West Marina has been closed since the holiday weekend. Low water pressure or no water at all forced us to close the building. Pressure has gotten better during the week, but on weekends, the pressure has dropped. We are currently receiving bids to drop the well deeper. Shaun has added 3 portable toilets to the West Marina to until the water pressure issue has been resolved. b. Batwing and Finish cut mowing has continued despite the rainy weather. Before the holiday we did catch up on all mowing which allowed us to start mowing some of the fields and ski hill. c. With the rains we have had to deal with ero-sion in many areas. One area we are addressing immediately is Pell Park. The stream going from under the road to the cove is eroding away in many areas. We will be addressing the stream right at the tube going under the road and then an area that washed away at the mouth of the cove. Both areas have been hit hard with erosion with the rains last month. All work is being down in house by Lake Carroll Maintenance staff. d. Now that we have gotten through the holiday we are starting some non-mowing related projects – trimming trees, filling in the sides of the roads, clearing out behind the guard rails and spraying weeds to name a few. 11. Lake Management/Wildlife: a. The lake level as of June 22, 2015 was 740’. Exactly pool level. Water started going over the spillway on May 28, 2015 and it hasn’t stopped since. b. The 4th of July weekend offered beautiful weather for the entire weekend. Friday July 3rd was as busy as a weekend day and the crowds stayed through Sunday July 5th – the marina sold over 4000 gallons of gas in the 3 days and the pool and beach experienced very heavy traffic. c. This year has proven to be a difficult one with regards to the aquatic weeds. The water clarity has reached record highs for Lake Carroll with light penetration reaching as deep as 17 feet. Our weed harvesting operation was stalled during the month of June due to rain. This month however, and since July 6th, we have been able to utilize the harvester on a much more consistent basis. As of July 17th, most areas of the Lake have been harvested at least one time. We will continue harvesting the weeds through July and into August. Please remember, the harvester cuts weeds to a depth of three feet. With the sunlight they are receiving, the weeds grow back to the water’s surface very quickly, and at times, faster than we can remove them. Shaun and I have and will continue to discuss the pos-sibility of running the Harvester in double shifts during the month of June next year. Data collection showed transparency read-ings over 17 feet again last week. This continues to be an issue for invasive aquatic plant growth this year. The growth of curly leaf pondweed is high this year as well as there are extensive areas where Eurasian water milfoil is growing and the treatment areas will be larger this year. To date we have treated approximately 50 acres for curly-leaf and milfoil. Along with the milfoil, the fila-mentous algae are growing, and Joe is continuing to treat areas of the lake experiencing excessive filamentous algae growth. Joe has also treated for brittle naiad in three areas of the lake, and will continue to monitor for further growth in those ar-eas as well as other areas. d. Lands: We have secured a grant with the SWCD in Carroll County to have the assistance of an Americorp project team of 9 individuals to assist us with invasive plant removal at Lake Carroll. It is two full days of work, with the 9 Americorp team members. I am recruiting volun-teers from Lake Carroll to assist with the project and I would like to have one volunteer per team member at all times. My thoughts are that the vol-unteers would be learning from our Americorp team how to identify and control these invasive plants so that we can do this again on our own, if needed. I also plan to request more volunteers through the hunting program e-blast and possibly even the LCA e-blast. I’ve attached some info on the project location (site map) and the info on the Americorp team. e. As usual, I have included Joe’s complete

monthly report for your review.12. Building Inspection/Architectural & Environ-mental: a. Doug Rominski, our new Building Inspec-tor is transitioning into his new position very well. I have already received many compliments from Builders who have enjoyed the help and coop-eration which Doug has offered. Though Doug has much to learn about Lake Carroll, I am very pleased with his progress, work ethic and profes-sionalism. b. When the 2015 budget was created, a line item was added for a Building Inspector consultant to help us generate form letters and assist us with de-veloping practices which are consistent with those used in the industry. Mr. Jim Kelly is a Property Owner here at Lake Carroll and offers such a ser-vice. We have retained the services of Mr. Kelly who will work with Doug beginning August 1, 2015. Mr. Kelly will be onsite for a half day each week to work with Doug, assist with inspections, review plans and participate in the A & E Commit-tee meetings. Doug will also spend three full days in the suburbs working with Jim as he conducts inspections and enforces the municipality’s build-ing codes. The Consultant will be retained from August 1, 2015 through November 30, 2015. 13. Golf Operations (Pro Shop): a. No specific 14. Golf Maintenance: a. New Guardrails have been installed on holes #3 and #4 as recommended by our Insurance agent. 15. Clubhouse Operations: a. No specific 16. Recreation Complex Operations: a. Aquatic Complex: i. The indoor pool continues to run smoothly with no maintenance issues to report. ii. The Outdoor pool continues to run smoothly with no significant maintenance issues to report. iii. Chelsey and her lifeguards participated in training with the Lanark Fire Department at the Aquatic Complex. The training was focused on water rescue techniques and proper extrication. b. Recreation: i. The Fitness Room was used 125 times be-tween June 15th and July 15th, 2015. Lively Low Impact Zumba classes are also currently being of-fered at the Lodge on a weekly basis. ii. The annual “Kick off to Summer” party took place on Saturday June 20th. The weather was bad that night with thunderstorms so all events were held inside. 60 people still came to enjoy music from Free Fall. Kids enjoyed crafts, the game room, and free ice cream. iii. Family Fun night took place on June 19th, June 26th, and July 3rd. Weather has played a huge factor in attendance but July 3rd was our biggest crowd with about 60 people. The Carroll County Farm Bureau brought tractors, animals, and offered free sandwiches to the membership that was there. Everyone really enjoyed it. iv. The 1st session of swimming lessons fin-ished on June 19th with 40 kids participating. 2nd session of swimming lessons started on June 29th- July 10th with 64 kids participating. v. The 4th of July Volleyball tournament went very well with 7 teams participating in a double elimination tournament. vi. The First session of Kidz Camp took place on June 22nd-June 26th with 60 kids participating. 30 in the preschool and 30 in the afternoon. All of the kids had a great time with different games and crafts each day centered towards the theme. Fri-day June 26th a special ice cream social was held for the kids and their families to celebrate 5 years of Kidz camp. That evening a cd was played with pictures and music from the week’s camp and the kids preformed a special dance they learned that week for their parents. c. Ski Hill: i. I was contacted Matt Ripplinger recently regarding the Ski Hill Liability Insurance cover-age we currently carry. The Ski Hill is the only amenity not covered by Cincinnati Ins. Currently, Lake Carroll has a $1,000,000 policy for the Ski Hill. The $10,000,000 umbrella from Cincinnati does not extend to the Ski Hill. Additional cover-age can be purchased for $1,000 per $1,000,000 of additional coverage. Matt feels we should con-sider additional coverage as the $1,000,000 policy may be inadequate.17. Campground: a. Ellis continues to please as our Campground host. In previous years, the Campground Com-mittee has held a bon-fire on the Sunday evening prior to Labor Day. All Lake Carroll Members are invited to this event and it has increased in popu-larity over the past few years. This year, Ellis has asked if we could hold a parade on Sunday, Sep-tember 6, 2015 prior to the bon-fire. The parade would begin at the West Marina, travel south on Lake Carroll Blvd. for approximately one mile and end at the Campground. If the Board is in fa-vor of this parade, Ellis will contact the local Fire Departments, other Committees who may wish to participate and the Eastland High School March-ing Band. 18. Equestrian Area(s): a. No specific report

Lake Carroll and the surrounding area saw a display of some beautiful clouds at sunset following some heavy rains on Monday, July 13th. An anvil cloud, photo by Donna Beyer (4-130) to the north that displayed a lightening show in the lower thunder clouds, and another unique cloud formation to the east looking like the sun is about to burst right out of it, photo by Bonnie Ewing (26-66).

All About You

This is the first year for the Amphicar that is registered at Lake Carroll. It’s quite a sight to see…begins in the parking lot and ends up in the lake. Thanks to Rita Rolfs (lakeview) and Tom Weinecke’s granddaughter (land view) for sending in the photos.

Here are some of the items you can look forward to seeing… In 1990 I had the privilege to go overseas; this would be my start to a magical adventure into the culinary world. I stayed with my Uncle Drogo in Croatia Sisak and Yugoslavia in a time before the collapse. Rumor was Drogo was the only one in blocks with his house painted, because of his ties with the old Communist party as a professor in violin. The inside of his house was dressed in antique woodwork and scented with the smell of old books. He eagerly escorted me to the backyard; this is where he truly lived. Jugs of homemade wine rested in a shaded corner next to the door. Chickens danced around you in the endless search they seem to have

for food. Water came from the well and hauled up with a bucket. Meat and fish were hanging in a wooden old smoker. Goats and sheep were chewing heavily on straw, and a massive garden full off edible vegetation. And then Drago smiles and pulls down a green tear dropped fruit from one of his trees and handed to me. I started to try and dissect this strange thing that turns out to be a Fig. The only fig I knew of filled the inside of a cookie or cake. It made me think of the old commercials “It’s not a cookie, it’s a cake!” There was only a small cube fridge because the only thing you would save or store was so minute. It was like this everywhere in Croatia and Germany, you always shopped that day for the things you needed…he bakery in the morning and to market in the afternoon. There was no “shopping” for stuff that would sit on your shelves for months. Unless it was real like salt cured fish and pork or pickled herring. The whole day would be based around food; after all it’s a pretty important part of life. I loved this idea and have held it close, ever since that time. I moved on to stay with relatives in Sisak, a beach facing the view of Italy. I would go snorkeling with the local kids for spider crabs hiding around the sea rocks. There was no power in this area so it was common to boil them over a fire and hangout outside till it was time for bed. The experience was surreal, like a time capsule of a distant time. The local kids and I would communicate with drawings in the sand. We would race to the Flipper, a hut-style beach bar for small little cans of juice and snacks. But not everything would stay so dreamlike, for soon the place would face a war and full secession in 1991. To be continued… For the love of good food and friends…”Cheers!”

A petition signed by about 100 people asks that the popcorn be brought back to the bar and there is still no popcorn there. The snack mix in its place is more expensive. Join the Lake Carroll Women’s Club...Because, You’re Worth It!

By Bonnie Ewing

The Lake Carroll Women’s Club is a growing organization dedicated to the development of its members, intellectually, socially and philanthropically. Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month, September through June at 1pm at the Lodge. If you’re not currently a member, consider joining! Annual dues are $20.00. Our Membership Application can be found close to this article.

Although the Women’s Club doesn’t officially begin until September, many of its members will be attending the Good Samaritan Society’s August Birthday party in Mt. Carroll on Wednesday, August 12 at 2pm. Participants are asked to wear brightly colored clothing to help create a cheerful atmosphere. This is a fun event that helps support the society and brings such joy to its residents. Bingo will be played and treats will be provided. Please contact Janet Campana if you’d like to join in on the frivolity! The 2015-2016 schedule of events is shaping up. This year’s program theme will be “Because, I’m Worth It!” The first meeting of the year will be held on September 10 at the Lodge at 1pm. To kick-off the year and get us into the theme mind-set, Karen Ruter will be sharing her knowledge about choosing the correct colors when buying clothes, hair products, and make-up to bring out our best features and help us feel confident and positive. In October we’ll continue the theme by having our own John Voelz come and speak about incorporating medically based fitness into our lives to help us safely improve our bodies. A complete list of the schedule for the year will be in the September paper. Being a member of the Women’s Club is a great way to meet new people, acquire ideas about making life more enjoyable, and helping make a difference in our neighborhood and beyond!

“Lake Carroll Photography Clubis offering a piece of the “Lake”.

The Lake Carroll Fishing Club held its annual Kids Fishing Derby on June 20th with ap-proximately 100 young fishermen and ladies attending with their parents. As usual the young anglers seemed to enjoy the event even with the fishing being a little slow this year and rain in the forecast for the day. The rain held off long enough for us and our MC Mike Siciliano did not have to blow the horn to signal a weather cancellation. We had three age groups for the largest fish and the most fish for each group this year. In the 4-6 age group Alyse Knacksdedt took first with a 16” lg. mouth bass. Alyse also had the most fish in the group with 2. Mia Miller took second with a 13 1/4’’ lg. mouth bass. In the 7-10 age group Joe Knackstedt took 1st place with (2) 16’’ lg. mouth bass. Joe also had the most fish in the group with 7 total. Jace Richard placed second with a 15’’ catfish and Israllla Conder placed third with a 15” walleye, unfortunately she was one minute behind Jace for second place. In the 11-14 age group Logan McBride took first place with a 14 1/2’’ walleye. Tanner Nelson took second with a 14’’ walleye. and Kyle Domingos took third with a 13’’ sm. mouth bass. We had a tie for the most fish here as each caught one.

We also had a casting contest for two age groups 7-10 and 11-14. In the 7-10 age group Ethan Clarke and Chase Bremmer tied for first. Taylor Gulley and Ryan Rook tied for second. Rosario Valenti took third place. In the 11-14 age group Amanda Johnson took first place. Grant Johnson took second. And Conner McBride took third place. For the 4-6 age group we held a bags contest with first place going to Aden O’Brian and second place going to Ryan Mowers tying with Braxton Villansor. Once again we thank Millers Sport Center and the Fishing Hole Bait and Tackle for their generous support this year providing prizes for the kids, Deb Miller provided the tee shirts, and Larry of the Fishing Hole provided the juicy worms for all the participants. We also thank Jamie and Jeanette George of Trophies by George as they provided the awe-some trophies for the winners. We also thank the men and women Fishing Club volunteers that made this event happen again. I know they all had a great time helping all the kids have fun. Thank you Mike Si-ciliano for announcing the event and keeping us safe. Thank you Bill and Nancy Comstock for organizing the great day for the kids and their parents. We are scheduling next year’s derby for June 18th, 2016. Hope you plan ahead to join us next year. Also join us for the next potluck Fishing Club meeting held the second Wednesday of every month. We meet at the Lodge at 6pm to enjoy a dish to pass meal, the meeting, and friends. Come join us.

July 8th 2015 Fishing Club Potluck Meeting Our July Fishing Club meeting gathered at the Lodge at 6PM starting with the potluck meal with side dishes, deserts, and fried chicken prepared by the Lanark Food Mart. Another great meal enjoyed by all in attendance. We had about 80 members and guests at this month meeting. Tom Stangl lead this month’s meeting as our President Bill Comstock was out of town. Tom did a great job keeping the meeting light hearted and enjoyable. Thanks Tom. The meeting began at 6:59pm with member Tom Young introducing his guest, Vick Stedt; Mitch Feucht with his guests Don & Ginger Welty. We had another guest, Dennis, but I’m sorry I did not catch who he was with or last name. Hope to meet you again at next month’s meeting. Mitch Feucht gave the Treasurer’s report which, as usual, was down to the penny. Fred Reddies and Barb Anderson made motions to accept the report and it was accepted by the members. Fred Reddies updated us on Hatchery Operations. The second batch of minnows were added to the Fawn Pond and Fred is continuing to watch for minnow spawning in the pond to add to the dinner menu for the walleye fry. Tom Stangl and Fred are working with Tim, our Golf Course Superintendent, to try and apply weed control to the pond as they have literally taken over the pond. Joe Rush has also been involved in researching chemicals to control the weeds, to not interfere with golf course irrigation, and not hurt the fry in the pond. Fred also mentioned that we have again split the walleye hatch this year between the lake and the pond to increase the survival rate, as the pond had not been favoring survival the past couple years. Tom mentioned the success of the annual Kids Fishing Derby and thanked all the members for their continued help in making the outing work smoothly. We had 100 kids and their families attend this year for a great time. You can see photos of this event on 1B of this issue. Fred Reddies reported that the Fishing 101 class had 10 adults and 10 kids in attendance. He thanked Jim Mance for his help in having the class. Fred included descriptions of rods, reels, knot tying, hooks, sinkers, slip bobbers, types of minnow buckets, and catch baskets in the presentation along with other information to help

the less experienced catch fish. He also stated the kids were given a small tackle box of goodies from the Fishing Club. Thanks to Nancy Comstock who provided Fishing Club stickers for the boxes. Tom updated us on the rock structure project stating we would like to add two more reefs after Labor Day this fall. He also stated we are still planning on marking the reefs with buoys. We also plan on having another work day to sink the Christmas trees collected this year. We will let you know when the date is set. Bob Knackstedt gave us a description the fishing tournament dates and procedures he has been scheduling for some time here for Lake Carroll residents and their guests. Bob mentioned the schedule is posted in the Lake Carroll paper for all interested in participating. Tom mentioned the Couples Fishing Derby is scheduled for August 10th. Our Annual Golf outing is scheduled for September 19th. Mike Siciliano let us know the Arlington Day at the Races will be August 27th starting out at 9am meeting at the Clubhouse for the bus ride in. Some seats left, so give Mike a call, $18.00 per person. Tom asked the members for nominations for next year’s Fishing Club Board. He stated Mike Siciliano will be accepting nominations for three Board Members whose terms will expire. We will have our election for new the board in December. We would like to welcome our newest members Wayne and Sue Ugorek. Hope you enjoyed our potluck meeting. Motion was made and we adjourned the meeting at 7:28pm. The 50-50 Drawing was held, Rosanne Stangl took first place with $50.00 and Judy Czurylo took second with $40.00. Congrats! Hoping you can come and join us at the August meeting the second Wednesday of the month, August 12th, at 6pm. Bring your place settings and a dish to pass if you wish. Drinks by donation and chicken provided by the Club. You shouldn’t leave hungry.

Around The CampfireBy Ellis Fitzgerald, Campground Host

Well it looks like summer has finally arrived and we are starting to see the kind of weekend weather that allows the most fun at Lake Carroll and the Campground. If you missed the 4th of July, the campground was one of the best in my memory. The campground was full of members and their families. The fireworks show at the Clubhouse was in my and many others opinion was the best ever. The Annual Campground Golf Outing was a huge success and a special thanks to Mike and Jill Tepps (site 122) for their hard work in making it such a success. Forty golfers played, even though we got rained on for the entire round, and 46 people came to the dinner afterwards at the Clubhouse. Next year we plan to have at least 80 players, so mark your calendar as soon as the 2016 date is posted. After a wonderful morning on the course, everyone was treated to a delicious Mexican luncheon at the Clubhouse. Following lunch, prizes and raffles were handed out. Now that summer is in full swing, the golf course has started to see some play and the course is in excellent shape once again. The end of June and July was busy, with several events and a great 4th of July weekend. The Lake Carroll Big Cup was a huge success with 74 players enjoying the course and the event. The event generated over $800 for additional cart path maintenance. Thank you all for the support and help with the cart path work that is scheduled to be done this fall. July 4th weekend was great with Nite Golf, Junior Golf Camps, Fireworks on the Driving Range Theater, and the Firecracker Scramble. All were exceptionally large events. We also had the Ladies Invitational with 74 ladies enjoying the course and

the restaurant following the event. The weather was great for the day and the ladies enjoyed all of the great games and prizes. The Mr. and Mrs. Club Championship and the POA Big Cup Scramble were also held during the month of July, results for the Mr. and Mrs. Club Championship follow:2015 MR. AND MRS. Adopt-A-FairwayBy Sue Ugorek, Golf Committee

Last month a new program “Adopt-A-Fairway” was introduced in the newspaper and in the weekly Lake Carroll email blast. This program, suggested by golfer Ellis Fitzgerald and supported by both the Golf Course Staff and Golf Committee, requested volunteers, either individuals or groups, to adopt a fairway to fill divots on a regular/as-needed basis. Tim Throop, our course superintendent will have the buckets, scoops, and grass seed mix available to the volunteers. Thank you to those who have already volunteered. Half of the holes have been adopted. But half are still available. To volunteer, please contact Ellis Fitzgerald at [email protected] or Sue Ugorek at [email protected]. Plants are known as ‘primary producers’. What this means, is that they need sunlight (and nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen) to grow. Without both nutrients and sunlight, plants would die. Aquatic plants are no different. However, the sunlight that reaches plants is dependent on the transparency of the water that the plants live in. This year, the transparency (clarity) of the lake has been excessively good! While many members enjoy seeing deep into the clear lake, so do aquatic plants. We’ve had transparency readings upwards of 27 feet early this year and at 16 ½ feet as of early July. While the clarity of the water this year is very high, it has been similar to this in the past. For example, in 2004, we collected transparency readings up to 20 feet deep, and before that, up to

16 ½ feet deep in 1996. Only time will tell if we will continue this route of ‘clearer’ water into the future. I would be amiss if I didn’t recognize the possibility the increased clarity is due to the growth of zebra mussels in the lake, but this time it isn’t certain. Only more data over the following years will be able to check that trend. On another note, there are many other Northern Illinois lakes experiencing much higher than normal transparency this year too. These lakes are not connected to Lake Carroll, so it is interesting to see the increase in clarity on them as well. It is possible that this clarity is part of a larger environmental cycle (just like 1996 and 2004). Now some members that have been here for a long time will say they remember those years with really good clarity but they don’t remember the weed growth. This would be true. In 1996 our aquatic plant community was virtually non-existent and 2004 was very low with native plant species. As lakes age, aquatic plants can begin to grow and establish

throughout. This is actually good, as long as they are native plants, because they provide habitat for fish, oxygen for aquatic life, and utilize nutrients in the system before bad algae can become dominant. The difficulty we now face is the introduction of Eurasian water milfoil around 6 years ago. We all wonder how this happened, but the invasion of non-natives to lakes is never truly known. They may come in as a hitchhiker on a trailer by a careless boater that didn’t inspect and wash their boat and trailer or possibly in a bucket of minnows seined out of an infected water body, or possibly in the ballast water of a wake boat. No one truly knows. Locating the ‘smoking gun’ in this crime will never happen, however we will continue working towards managing this new problem we have. And we continually remind our members to be good stewards of the lake and make an effort to clean and inspect anything that is used in other bodies of water and Lake Carroll. The same holds true when your equipment leaves Lake Carroll… clean it so that we don’t take our problems on to other bodies of water! This season we have chemically treated more milfoil than ever in past years. In my opinion, this is due to the increased clarity we’ve seen this season. I believe it’s allowed these plants to grow in areas where they have been dormant in the past. Another obstacle we’re managing is the growth of filamentous algae. Filamentous algae are the bright green ‘stringy’ looking growth that looks like underwater cotton candy. This material grows and then floats to the surface as a mat. The areas that have been chemically treated for curly-leaf pondweed and milfoil are experiencing filamentous algae blooms. This occurs because the rooted plants that have been treated are dying and decaying. This, in turn, releases nutrients back into the water as a food source for these filamentous algae. We are monitoring and treating areas for algae and will continue as the summer progresses.

HERE’S HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS: If you know someone who has expressed interest in becoming a Lake Carroll Member, please have them contact myself at the Association Office. Instruct your friend to inform me of your name as the member who referred them. You may also contact me yourself to let me know that I may be hearing from your friend regarding the purchase of a lot. I will match your name with the prospect’s name and when the referral purchases the property, and pays the first 12 months of dues, you will receive $500. To help you and anyone interested in purchasing an Association Owned lot, we will be adding a new page to our current Web-site. This page will display a listing of available lots, a map showing the location, the size of the lot, the price of the lot and a photo of the property. We anticipate having this page available prior to February 28, 2015. In addition to providing another person or family the opportunity to enjoy all the Lake Carroll has to offer, this program will also help spread the financial burden of operating the Association, onto a broader Membership base. The Association needs more Members and there are people out there who would like the benefits of Lake Carroll Membership and Ownership. If you have a question regarding the incentive program or have a referral you wish to make me aware of, I may be reached at 815-493-2552 ext 12 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Refer a New Lake CarrollProperty Owner and Receive $500

Over the past several years, The Lake Carroll Association has unwillingly acquired dozens of Lots through our collection policy, foreclosures, or through past due amount settlements. The Association pays Real Estate taxes on these properties and needless to say, there are no Dues Assessments levied upon or collected for these Ownerless lots. One way of soliciting these properties at little or no cost is to enlist and incent our current Membership for referrals who ultimately purchase a Lake Carroll Owned lot. Currently, The Association owns fifty-seven (57) single lots and thirty-nine (39) double or triple lots. Nearly all of these lots are considered buildable and all of them are very reasonably priced. We are not looking for you to provide us with leads or phone numbers so that they may be marketed to. Instead we are simply making an offer to reward you with $500 if you have a friend or family member who purchases one of the lots currently owned by the LCA.

Dreams Come TrueAt Lake Carroll

By Bob Froelich

Bob and Earlene Froelich are newcomers at Lake Carroll. Their dream was to move into a small friendly community, buy a ranch style home with at least 3 acres so that they could have their two horses Bo and Freja in their backyard. Five years ago, when they were planning their retirement, Earlene was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma. Earlene could not return to her job in Elgin as school social worker and Bob had to retire to care for her. After many prayers and a year of concern they thought their dream was dashed. However Earlene’s health returned and being in remission, they searched high and low for their dream home. A friend suggested Lake Carroll, and the rest is history. The Froelich’s found their perfect home with three acres and the horses arrived the day after Earlene’s 70th birthday. Their dream became a reality and as a bonus they have made new best friends. When Bob was looking at the astronomically big job of fencing in two acres, low and behold Don Marrone, Tom Wienecke, and Frank Kratochvil showed up to help him. In two days the fence was up and is affectionately known as “The four old guys’ fence.” If you’re driving by 28-70 Lake Carroll Blvd, stop by and meet the girls.

Bob and Earlene Froelich (28-70), relatively newcomers to Lake Carroll, recently completed their move to LC by fencing in their equestrian lot and bringing their horses “home.”Photos by Don Marrone

Pelicans of Lake CarrollBy Donna Beyer Photo by Mark Ratay

The LC pelican flock has been a very popular photo submission for our Members this spring and summer. Mark Ratay (27-52) watch as the flock grouped together to feed on something tasty. With the frequent sightings of this pelican flock, I thought I’d provide a little information on this Jurassic-looking fowl. There are more than half a dozen species of pelicans, but all of them have the famous throat pouch for which the birds are best known. These large birds use their elastic pouches to catch fish—though different species use it in different ways. Many pelicans fish by swimming in cooperative groups. They may form a line or a “U” shape and drive fish into shallow water by beating their wings on the surface. When fish congregate in the shallows, the pelicans simply scoop them up. ¬Sometimes pelicans tag along with other birds tracking their prey in the water, stealing the fish right from under them. They themselves are victims of pirating on occasion. It can take a few seconds for a pelican to drain all the water out of its pouch, during which time a gull -- often standing on the pelican’s head and pecking it as a distraction -- darts into its open bill and steals the fish. Pelicans do not store fish in their pouch, but simply use it to catch them and then tip it back to drain out water and swallow the fish immediately. The American white pelican can hold some 3 gallons of water in its bill. ¬ While most pelicans eat fish exclusively, they can be opportunistic feeders, eating lizards, frogs, crabs, and lobsters. Pelicans have even been observed eating smaller birds sometimes scooping up water in order to drown them before swallowing. Aside from catching their prey, pelicans use their bill for other things. During courtship, male pelicans often stretch out and flap their pouches and clap their bills repeatedly. They may also lash out at rivals and other threats with the sharp hook at the end. Baby chicks are fed by both parents, who regurgitate partially digested fish for them to eat. Chicks that are old enough to eat whole fish but not yet ready to hunt may be seen “fishing” for dinner inside their parents’ pouches. Pelicans that live in warm climates sometimes open their bills and flap their pouches in order to cool down. Fossil records show that pelicans have been around for more than 40 million years, so regardless of how weird the pouch might seem to us, it’s served the bird well. With the continued efforts of conservationists, hopefully pelicans will be around for a long time and continue to amaze and intrigue us. It’s August, which means summer staff is thinking about going back to school, we are all thinking about fall, cooler temperatures, and wishing we had played more golf or fished more this summer. The Maintenance Department has been busy cleaning up from the rains this season, even into August. The weekly rains this June and July were great in filling up the lake when we needed it, but also created some erosion issues throughout the property that we have had to address. Some of the worst hit areas were on the ATV trail. Erosion on the trails created huge ruts in areas that could not dry out with the recurring rains. In many of these areas we put bigger rock in the ruts for a new base and then top dressed with smaller rock. Another area that we fixed was the crossing of the creek at

Zier Pond. The strength of the water coming through that creek created a steep ditch that made going through the creek difficult for some of the bigger UTV’s. We added smaller rock to create a shelf in the water for driving and then reinforced the small rock with larger rock to make sure the next big rain didn’t ruin all of our work. There are more areas that we know we need to address that are hoping we get to this fall. I have asked for some additional money in 2016 to add culverts to the low spots on the north side the trail. I think these will move the water through the trail better and allow areas that do not see much sun light to dry out quicker. We have also been doing a lot of work on the Pell Park creek. Water coming through the tube under the road continued to erode large areas of this creek this summer. The cement drainage shoot at the bottom of the hill collapsed in June. Water had carved out all the dirt underneath the cement until it collapsed. We filled in this area and created a new drainage area with rock. We also rebuilt the west wall of the creek just outside of the tube. New fabric and large rock were replaced to help stabilize the wall that takes a beating whenever we get heavy rains. We also had to rebuild an area at the mouth of the creek in Pell Park cove. This area just gave-way from the gushing water in June. For this we rebuilt the wall with smaller rock, then put our fabric down and large rock on top of the fabric. There is more to do in this area, but I am hopeful that this will help our problem for future rains. The harvester has been going all out when it is not raining. As I am writing this article and watching the rain we have only had one week where the harvester has not missed at least one day of cutting because of rain. Despite the rain, by the end of this week we will still have gotten to all parts of the lake at least once. I am still taking requests, so if you have weeds at your lakefront, please call or email me to let me know ([email protected]). I will get you on the list and let you know when we will be in your area. Please remember the staff cannot get all the weeds under your dock and around your boats. The harvester is moved very easily by the wind and waves so they do not want to chance hitting a boat by getting too close. They still do a great job of cleaning up the shoreline when requested. I think it is going to be another long year for the harvester, which means we will be cutting weeds into September. Like last year, we will continue cutting until the requests stop or the season is coming to a close.

Land Designation ProposalBOD and Bylaws Committee

Designation of various land parcels making up the Lake Carroll community is important for all Lake Carroll Association members as it keeps the use of land as intended. Permitted use of lots and parcels are normally identified in our Governing Documents, i.e. the Final Plat, the Declarations of Covenants and Restrictions and the Supplemental Declarations of Covenants for each Section of the Development. However, when those documents were filed at the County Recorder’s Office, several parcels were retained by the Developer. Subsequently, the parcels were conveyed to the Association but the formal steps called for in the Covenants of recording plats and Supplemental Declarations designating use were never done. The Board of Directors (BOD) would like to rectify the status of these parcels. The BOD authorized the By-Laws Committee to address this situation and make recommendations. The Committee has conducted research involving legal input, field work at the Recorder’s Office, and consultation with Wendler Engineering. The transferred parcels are scattered throughout the community and include parts of the Golf Course, Clubhouse, Campground, Recreation Complex, Marinas, Hatchery, Lake and two undeveloped areas. Land use had been informally established by the Developers and has been continued by the Association all these years. The proposal is to seek membership approval at the 2015 Annual Meeting to execute and record Supplemental Declarations and plats for the parcels making them subject to the Covenants and formally designating land use that is in line with how the parcels have been used. Each parcel will be incorporated into a Section of the Development that it is adjacent to. The Supplemental Declarations and plats are being prepared and will be available for review on the LCA website. We anticipate that Members may have questions relating to this proposal. You may direct your questions to [email protected].

A&E Committee Members Needed The A&E Committee is seeking new members. The mission of the A&E Committee is to review and approve plans for proposed construction, rip rap, septic systems and other improvements to lots, recommends building code rules and regulations to the Board for approval and enforces such rules and regulations. The Committee has authority to institute fees and fines in accordance with Board approved schedules. A qualified member of one of the allied physical design professions (civil engineer, architect, land planner, etc.) is included in its membership. The Lake Carroll building inspector shall work with the A/E Committee. A background in construction is helpful to this committee. If you are interested in applying to be considered for this committee, you can find the application on the general committee webpage at www.golakecarroll.com (you must be logged on to view and/or download the application) or you can pick up an application at the Admin Office. Return the completed application to Donna Beyer ([email protected] or at the office) for processing.

I just returned from the Club’s Annual FREE TRAIL RIDES event. Even though the forecasters predicted a hot, muggy day, it ended up not being as bad as predicted. We had a great time showing many new Lake Carroll residents a portion of our trail and catching up with a few that returned to see it again. As promised last month, here are the winners from June’s Poker Run. Congratulations to:1st place - Chris DeBoer2nd place - Daniel DeBoer3rd place - Logan TiptonWorst hand - Trina LaSourdMuddiest - tie Brittany Slaten and John Gap The trail sure has taken a beating with all the heavy rains we endured so far this summer. I even ran into some trouble myself by submerging my ATV in one of the creeks after one particularly heavy rain storm. While I was able to pull my quad out of the water, I couldn’t get it all the way up the slippery bank. I was a little disappointed in one fellow trail rider and his friend in a side by side who saw me stuck from across the street and turned around without offering assistance. A big thanks to our Security Staff who pulled me the rest of the way out. Luckily I didn’t get a lot of water in the engine and was able to get my ATV running and ride home. Once home, I had some work to do. Here are some of the things you need to do if you ever find yourself in the same situation:1. Drain all the fluids - gas, oil, transmission, brake, etc. 2. Clean the carburetor and change the air, oil and fuel filters.3. Take the plugs out of the engine and turn the motor over to force any water in the cyl-inder out. Water in other parts of the engine will come out with the oil. 4. Add oil to the engine and turn it over again, without the spark plugs in. Let it sit for a few minutes then check the oil to see if there’s any water remaining (it will look white milky if there is still water remaining). If it’s there, drain it again and start over until there is little or no white showing in the oil.5. Now re-install the spark plugs, add gas, and try to start it. You should have a can of ether handy just in case it’s stubborn, but don’t use too much. If it starts, let it run for a couple of minutes without revving the engine.6. After it runs for a few minutes shut it off, drain the oil and change the filter. Run it again for a few minutes then shut it off and check again for milky colored oil. If you have none you should be good to go.7. If you can’t get it started, you may need to take your ATV to a professional. Is it too early to start thinking about the Night Ride? It doesn’t seem to be. No matter what time of the year it is, the topic always seems to come up when I talk to other trail riders. This year the date is Saturday, October 17th. More details next month. A few short weeks after that is our final event of the year, the Pack the Pantry Ride on Saturday, No-vember 7th. Until next time, ride safe, help another rider out if they need it, and I’ll see you on the Trail!

Celebrating Our

15th Year!

LC Yacht ClubBy Darlene Benson

Thank you to the “PADDLERS” that attended the “YACHT CLUB KAYAK/CANOE EVENT” on Sunday July 12th. There were 15 participants including a beautiful wooden “hand crafted” canoe by owner Ken Key and 1 paddle board owner, Alexa Patterson, who paddled round trip…you go girl! We started the morning off with some breakfast treats to nourish our bodies to achieve our goal, paddling from the West Marina beach area to Turkey Bay (Three tubes) …WE DID IT!! Along the way we received cheers of encouragement from lake front owners plus heard some grumbling “wishing we had participated in the event also”. We encourage you to join us next year! Once we arrived at Three Tubes we were able to stretch our legs, engage in refreshments and shared new ideas for next year’s event, before 5 paddlers proceeded on their return adventure. We appreciated the assistance of Security along with Yacht Club members Mary &Clarence Grant and Val & Bob Kachlic for deviating lake traffic away from the paddlers. “Anchors Away Award” goes to Anna Hennings and Teresa Lindsey who stayed on the water until 4pm enjoying the beautiful day! The next Yacht Club event is VENETIAN NIGHT on AUGUST 8th. All property owners invited to participate! So light up your boat and join us at the West Marina. The Lady of the Lake will head us out of the West Marina and lead us on our parade route. A detailed flyer can be found elsewhere in this issue. Need help on how to power your lights on your boat? There’s an article by Steve Gibus on the Yacht Club’s webpage at www.golakecarroll.com that may assist you.

Want to see theLighted Boat Parade?

If you’re not able to join us on August 8th with your boat all decked out in lights for the Venetian Night Boat Parade, you can view this event from the surrounding properties and roadways along the parade route. For those interested, the parade will leave the West Marina at approximately 8:45pm and move straight down the main part of the lake toward the Three-Tubes area and back. Each year a different route will be taken for the parade. We hope you can join us, but if you can’t, maybe we’ll see you along the way.

Highland Community College Foundation’s

“Woodstock” fundraiser to offer plenty of food and music

FREEPORT — The Highland Community College Foundation’s Events and Auction Committee recently released the menu for Shindig V — “Woodstock,” to be held August 15 in Freeport. Jim Berberet, Executive Director of the Foundation, said that Troy and Donna Lessman, of Shannon, will be preparing a wide array of foods for Shindig attendees. A few items from the buffet include crab cake bites with artichoke tartar sauce, drunken weenies, ribs, and pork tenderloin sliders with BBQ and mango salsa on the side. More healthy fare includes mushrooms (bacon wrapped and stuffed); skewers with watermelon, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto and mint (drizzled with balsamic vinegar and sprinkled with fresh ground black pepper), and assorted cheeses, dips and veggies. Desserts include tie-dyed cupcakes, lemon strawberry dessert, “hash brownie” selection and much more. Shindig V — “Woodstock” will be held at Woody Burt’s South Park Farm, south of Krape Park, in Freeport. Attendees, who hopefully will dress in their best 1969 attire, will experience a grand time, as well as fitting music and other treats, games and activities. Woodstock attire ranges from beads, headbands, neck scarves, and sunglasses to blankets, fringe and cutoffs and jeans. The HCC Foundation will offer its very popular and competitive live and silent auctions. Shindig V “Woodstock” begins at 5:00 p.m. with a silent auction. Live auction will begin at 7:00 p.m. with auctioneer Matt Hart of Sycamore. Tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased by contacting the HCC Foundation at 815.599.3413 or online at highland.thankyou4caring.org. Seating will be limited. Sponsors to date include Big Radio (platinum); Berner Food and Beverage, Helm Group, State Bank (gold); Union Savings Bank (silver); Forreston State Bank, and Olivet Nazarene University (bronze). All sponsors and major donated auction items will receive special mention in advanced publicity, event-night signage and the auction program. Several levels of sponsorship are available, and cash contributions are welcomed. For more information, contact the HCC Foundation at 815.599.3406. Proceeds from the event will benefit HCC Foundation’s “Growing for tomorrow… Changing lives today” campaign that supports the Ray and Betty Stamm Health Science Nursing Wing and Nursing and Allied Health programs, as well as the Wind Turbine Technology facility, additional occupational training and educational programs, and scholarships for students.
