Docktails: Kick off adult summer

entertaining with a punch

Punches have had a long tradition in Virginia as a beverage to kindle the spirits and brighten the occasion.

Old Dominion hospitality means making guest feel welcome, and a good punch historically was not only a way to entertain guests, but an easy—and affordable—way for the host to delight guests.

Because most of the punch components can be done in advance, the host is able to spend more time with guests. And, because there are complementary ingredients, usually fruit juices and the like, along with alcohol, punches can be a budget-stretcher.

Today a great punch is still a great way to entertain, whether the celebration is a holiday or a just-because day.

Here are four of my favorite punches that you’ll want to take dockside with family and friends and enjoy.

Note: to avoid having punches diluted, chill the beverage with a large ice ring floated in the center of the punch bowl rather than filing the bowl with ice cubes.

Easily make one by pouring about 3 cups distilled water into a 10-inch Bundt/tube pan; it should be about half full.

Place the pan in your freezer overnight. When ready to remove the ice ring, gently run cold water around the sides and bottom of the pan until it releases the ice. Use immediately.

METHOD

Remove cans of lemonade concentrate and orange juice concentrate from the freezer and place in refrigerator to slightly thaw, about one hour. Place bottle of Southern Comfort as well as bottle(s) of lemon-lime soda in refrigerator to chill, about one hour.In a punch bowl, add slightly thawed lemonade and orange juice concentrate, undiluted, and Southern Comfort. Stir to incorporate, add lemon juice, ice ring and float slices of lemons, oranges and sprigs of

thyme on top.

4 Referred to as “Two Lakes in One,” the lake is split into two navigable parts—the public (cool) and private (warm) sides—in order to disburse warm water, giving the warm side an extended season.

5 Lake Anna is the third largest lake entirely in Virginia with 250 miles of shoreline and 13,000 acres of clean water.

6 In 1972, the Commonwealth stocked Lake Anna with over 5.5 million fish and continues to stock the lake periodically with over 33 different species of fish, including Large Mouth Bass, Striped Bass and Catfish.

7 Lake Anna’s water is pumped at rates of up to 2 million gallons a minute and is used in one of three cooling systems.

8 Since the local rivers existed before Lake Anna, the area was originally a natural staging ground for Confederate troops preparing for the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse.

9 The ancestral home of Alex Haley, creator of the classic TV series “Roots,” resides here in Lake Anna.

A number of artificial reefs have been deposited in Lake Anna—mostly below the main bridge into the lower lake.

If you’re a frequent visitor of Lake Anna, you’ve likely heard about the plans for the Lake Anna Resort. It’s an exciting time at Lake Anna with the dream of The Resort becoming reality.Throughout 2015, developers will be working with

Louisa County’s Development Review Committee, Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors to make final changes and improvements to the master plan of this special project. The 10-acre piece located at the Louisa side of the Route 208Bridge will host up to 99 condo residences (all one-level within a multistory building), along with commercial restaurants and retail space, a hotel and services for the community such as a public beach, activities for the entire family and a social director to help provide fun for residents and visitors alike.

The process of rezoning the land parcel from commercial to a Planned Unit Development in this designated growth area will help the county with its goals of preserving the rural integrity of the county by providing modern conveniences and services along the travel corridor of the county. By optimizing development in the predetermined zones, the rural charm can remain for the majority of the county.

The Planned Unit Development classification is the way of the future for Louisa County, and these projects are desired, as there are higher standards needed in the way of higher open space requirements than in a typical commercial development. Developers are hoping to have the rezoning complete by the summer and after master plan approval, plan to break ground by late 2015. The residences will comprise the first phase of the project and are strategically placed on the parcel to angle away

from the neighbors in the cove to preserve privacy to existing homeowners.Residents have been expressing great interest in the added benefitsto the area, including a larger hotel and more shopping and restaurant choices. Lake Anna has been gradually adding more and more conveniences for residents and visitors to enjoy that have blended in nicely to the landscape. A development of this type only makes sense in this area so that many of the visitors that enjoy Lake Anna every year will be able to plan a family vacation and have a place to stay or have a facility that can handle accommodations for weddings, family reunions and other important milestones. While the plan for The Resort has developed throughout the past couple of years, interestedparties have already reserved their condo units and are anxious to take part in all The Resort will have to offer, including yoga classes, spa treatments, fine dining, swimming areas, more retail options and much more. The design incorporates high quality, luxurious elements designed to engage and entertain the entire family.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Lake Anna Resort, please feel free to visit LakeAnnaResort.com or call the development office to see all of the planning materials first hand with a meeting with the development team at (540) 894-4560 or at their office in the Lake Anna Visitor Center at (540) 872-0684. The developers have made it a priority to be available to the public and to listen to the thoughts, concerns and suggestions they receive in order to make this project something that fits and benefits the existing Lake Anna community they call home.

The Lake Anna Resort A DEVELOPMENT OF THIS TYPE ONLY MAKES SENSE IN THIS AREA SO THAT MANY OF THE VISITORS THAT ENJOY LAKE ANNA EVERY YEAR WILL BE ABLE TO PLAN A FAMILY VACATION AND HAVE A PLACE TO STAY OR HAVE A FACILITY THAT CAN HANDLE ACCOMMODATIONSFOR WEDDINGS, FAMILY REUNIONS AND OTHER IMPORTANT MILESTONES.

Nestled between the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and the Constitution, James Madison’s Montpelier, Gordonsville is a charming, quaint southern town rich in history. The town is home to several unique shops, restaurants, galleries,

a renowned Civil War museum and even a nearby airport, making Gordonsville a small town with one-of-a-kind features. In 1787, Nathaniel Gordon purchased 1,350 acres of land, and by 1794 he was granted a license to operate a tavern, which became known as Gordon’s Tavern and later as Gordon Inn. Located on the “Fredericksburg Great road,” the Gordon Inn eventually became a popular resting point for travelers making their way from Charlottesville over to the Blue Ridge Mountains and into the Valley. Later in 1840, a railroad was built through the town, which sparked the development of many of the buildings you can find on Main Street today. During the 19th century, Gordonsville was not only the center of trade in Orange County but was also home to two major crossroads connecting the town to the breadbasket of the Confederacy—the Shenandoah Valley—and Richmond to Staunton.

As more and more critical supply lines ran through the town by both rail and road, Gordonsville quickly became a significant part of the Civil War. The Exchange Hotel, located directly off the central railroad track, was converted into a military hospital where more than 70,000 sick and wounded soldiers from both the Confederate and the Union were cared for. Today, it is the only Civil War Receiving Hospital standing in Virginia and serves as The Exchange Hotel and Civil War Museum open to the public for self-guided tours. Following the Civil War, Gordonsville persisted to be a popular destination due to thousands upon thousands of travelers seeking the traditional southern fare that was always offered and soldiers in need of medical treatment and shelter.

Today, the town continues to thrive with plenty to see and do around the area. Walking through the town and witnessing all its special features and landmarks is like taking a step back into the past. You will find multiple battlefields throughout the area that have been preserved over time. Located less than 10 miles away in Orange County, you can learn all about the life of James Madison and his wife Dolley as your make your way through their original home, Montpelier, featuring guided tours and

special “behind the scenes” experiences. Made up of multiple galleries, hands-on activities, attractions, a garden and 2,650 acres of land, the Father of the Constitution’s home offers a wide variety of unique opportunities. The galleries at this attraction are truly remarkable, but there are other ways to get in touch with your creative side while in town. Gordonsville is home to a gallery, studio and printmaking workshop of landscape by artist Frederick Nichols as well as both regional and national artists. Displaying paintings and silkscreen prints that have been exhibited in galleries and museums for over 25 years, Nichols’ and other fellow artists’ work is truly incredible. Across the street you will find the sister company featuring changing exhibits throughout the year by the region’s finest artists.

Being that the town is full of significant history, there are plenty of annual events throughout the year that you won’t be able to celebrate anywhere else. As the “Fried Chicken Capital of the World,” Gordonsville is famous for its Fried Chicken Festival on May 17th, as well as the Annual Gordonsville Street Festival on October 4th and Historic Garden Week which brings over 1,000 visitors to town each year. See what events are happening when you’re in town at www.townofgordonsville.org. If you are feeling like a round of golf, then you are in luck! Enjoy a game while soaking in the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains at one of the two beautiful and affordable golf destinations offered just minutes away from the heart of Gordonsville. Both courses set the stage for an amazing golf experience and are created for all skill levels. For some quality entertainment, plan at night at the area’s longest continuously-operating theater. Located in the small village of Barboursville just 7 miles from Gordonsville, the theater is home to hilarious comedies, musicals and miraculous productions of Shakespeare. Take advantage of the beautiful weather at Cooke Park on Main Street where you can enjoy the calm surroundings of the community, or spend an afternoon at one of the wineries or vineyards located nearby. Virginia is known for producing unique and delectable wines made from the freshest and finest ingredients. Offering tastings and guided tours, the wineries around Gordonsville produce a lengthy list of different wines, from Ivy Creek Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Taste the true flavors of Virginia and witness breathtaking views at one of these beautiful wineries or vineyards.

When it comes to shopping, Gordonsville may not offer popular brand name stores, but you will find special shops complete with exceptional items that are hard to come by. There are numerous antique shops, both small and large, offering thousands of various items, from books and knick-knacks to furniture and fine china. Since the town is brimming with history, the antique shops are full of authentic items from the past that have been properly preserved and treated over time. Along with the antique shops are several boutiques, galleries,

jewelers and a homeware store with a diverse collection of items that are both matchless and trendy.

After you’ve gathered a bag full of special items, stop for a bite to eat one of the eateries offered in Gordonsville. From fast food to coffee shops to fine dining, you will surely find a place that will satisfy everyone’s taste buds. A soft serve ice cream shop and a burrito eatery have recently opened on Main Street and have been a big hit in town. But there is one place is particular that makes the town’s dining so special. At the BBQ Exchange, a line of people is formed out the door and around the corner just to try their homemade hickory-smoked and slow-roasted pork, delicious sides and house-made pickles and desserts.

Covering an area of more than 9,000 acres, spreading across Louisa, Orange and Spotsylvania counties, stretching 17 miles from tip to tip and boasting more than 250 miles of shoreline, Lake Anna is a water-enthusiast’s dream, especially for anglers.

Lake Anna was created in 1972 when Virginia Electric and Power closed the dam gates on the North Anna River to provide cooling water for their North Anna Nuclear Power Station. Virginia Power and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland

Fisheries immediately stocked the newly formed waterway with a variety of game and feed fish to help Lake Anna create a self-sustaining population of aquatic life.

Biological surveys conducted between 1975 and 1985 revealed that approximately 40 different species of fish were making Lake Anna home including: American Eel, Black Crappie, Blueback Herring, Bluegill, Bluehead Chub, Bluespotted Sunfish, Brown Catfish, Creek Chubsucker, Chain Pickerel, Channel Catfish, Common Carp, Eastern Mudminnow, Gizzard Shad, Golden

How long have you lived/worked in Lake Anna?18 yearsWhat are you best known for?Making it a priority that my boating clientele is on the water as much as possible to make the most of their time at Lake Anna. What is the most compelling reason to come to Lake Anna?To experience its beauty and tranquility. The first glimpse you take of it and you can begin to exhale and relax. What’s your favorite lakeside dish or restaurant?Tim’s At Lake Anna—the Crab CakesWhat would you like to see come to this area (restaurant, sporting venue/event, retail, other, etc.)?I believe a hotel or inn is what’s lacking. What will Lake Anna look like in 5 or 10 years?More of the everyday conveniences and services will be here at Lake Anna so that full-time residents, weekend visitors and those on vacation will have a better quality of life so that you can spend more time on the water.

Those who live at Lake Anna find themselves incredibly lucky to live in such a unique and beautiful place. Visitors quickly pick up on this once they vacation here themselves, which is why some have made Lake Anna their permanent residence. In order to show new visitors just how lucky the natives are, we interviewed four awesome lake locals to share their personal favorites, thoughts and feelings when it comes to living at the lake for such a long, but amazing, period of time. Meet Jonathan, Jill, Liz and Jeff and become more familiar with the ever so popular Lake Anna and all it has to offer through the eyes of these four locals.

How long have you lived/worked in Lake Anna?Worked at Lake Anna in various capacities since 1978 when my parents purchased this 70-acre farm. The winery opened in 1990.What are you best known for?Best known for producing fine estate grown grapes which in turn are converted to award-winning, affordable and friendly, approachable wines. What is the most compelling reason to come to Lake Anna? The sunsets are beautiful and when shared with friends and enjoyed with a glass of wine cannot be topped. What’s your favorite lakeside dish or restaurant? The crab cakes at Anna Cabana are well known in the area and combined with that lake sunset are truly a marvel. What would you like to see come to this area (restaurant, sporting venue/event, retail, other, etc)?  To date, Lake Anna has supported a few events and festivals that help to put us on the map. We need more events like the BrewFest, Lake Anna Wine Festival, and Grape and Grains Festivals to get people outside of our area to stand up and take notice. A concert venue would enhance these activities. What will Lake Anna look like in 5 or 10 years?  My experience the growth has only started for the area. It started slow and got even slower, but has picked up a sprinters pace in the past 3–5 years. Going forward the sky is the limit. The resident population will double, creating more demands for schools and health and rescue facilities. The local government entities are keen to this prospect and have worked with local businesses and residents to accommodate as much of their demands as possible. Cooperation will ensure that Lake Anna will be cast as a go to destination accessible from anywhere in Virginia.

How long have you lived/worked in Lake Anna?I have lived at Lake Anna for more than 40 years (almost my entire life) and I’m sure my daughter will follow in my footsteps —she loves it here! What are you best known for?My sense of humor… I hope! What is the most compelling reason to come to Lake Anna?I can’t think of a reason not to come to Lake Anna! We are lucky to have a large lake that stretches over 17 miles, giving us ample opportunity to have the best of everything—rural charm, a great sense of community, opportunities for outdoor and water recreation all while on the cusp of the development of The Lake Anna Resort. I also enjoy seeing the sunset every evening on Lake Anna! What’s your favorite lakeside dish or restaurant? That’s hard to choose! I love the hibachi from Asian Café, the prime rib at Tavern on the Rail, and I love the seafood from Tim’s!What would you like to see come to this area (restaurant, sporting venue/event, retail, other, etc.)?I’m really looking forward to seeing the addition of The Lake Anna Resort to our community. I’ve been working on the project for three years and have spent a lot of time making sure the project will be the best it can possibly be. While I’ll be working there for years to come, I’m also excited that I’ll call the development home. What will Lake Anna look like in 5 or 10 years?Lake Anna will continue to be the amazing community and destination we’ve come to love, with a few more commercial opportunities to help improve the quality of life for residents and visitors. I look forward to seeing these ideas come to fruition and help contribute to the responsible growth of Lake Anna and continue finding ways to preserve and enhance life at the lake.

JONATHAN SMITHSales Director for The Lake Anna Resort

How long have you lived/worked in Lake Anna?I have been a resident of Lake Anna for 25 years and have been a Realtor for 13 years. What are you best known for?Serving Lake Anna and surrounding areas in Real Estate for 13 years, Top Producer, Million Dollar Club, Gold Team Award member and recipient of the Lake Anna Guide’s Editor’s Award. On a personal note, my love of family, dogs, horses, animals and continued respect and support for our local businesses. What is the most compelling reason to come to Lake Anna? The Lake and the people who live here. Being afraid of water and not knowing how to swim 25 years ago, I still respect the water and can now dog paddle (learned that from my dogs), with life vest and safe boat driving. I find life so rewarding doing things I never dreamed possible. Lake Anna is a very friendly community, we are here to relax, have fun, enjoy meeting new friends, and, of course, you can buy a house or property from me.What’s your favorite lakeside dish or restaurant? Now we have so many restaurants from which to choose, this is a hard question. I love the Stuffed Pork Chop dinner at Ally’s, Lobster Bisque at Tim’s, the ability to bring my dog Piper to The No Wake Zone in the summer (they treat dogs like family)...her favorite is “Frosty Paws.” I love, love pizza, and we have that covered too! Maybe I would be a politician, because I love it all! What would you like to see come to this area (restaurant, sporting venue/event, retail, other, etc.)? I would definitely like to see a bank and health care facility. After having virtually no commerce around the lake for many years, I am very happy to have the new restaurants, Food Lion, places to purchase skis, wakeboards, Paddle boards, life vests and other fun accessories. I love venues such as the Winefest, Brewfest, Business Partnership Festival. What will Lake Anna look like in 5 or 10 years?I am hoping Lake Anna will not change too much in 5–10 years. Most of us are here to get away from the madness of congested areas. We love our wide open spaces. Health care, in my opinion, is very important around the lake so people of all ages can feel more comfortable knowing we are in good hands. Safety first, use caution and have a wonderful time at Lake Anna!

elcome to Lake Anna State Park, a summertime oasis attracting more than 250,000 annual visitors. It sits in Spotsylvania County along what was once the path of a train that ran along what is now State Park Lane.

“The lake is the draw, obviously,” says Douglas Graham, the park’s manager. “When people come here, they want to use the lake. And the largest number of people we have are here for the day use.”

The park’s sandy beach is open Memorial Day to Labor Day—with lifeguards. All year long, however, you can have a picnic, use a playground or access the park’s 10 miles of shoreline along the 13,000-acre Lake Anna. Visitors come to picnic, swim and hike.

“For the most part,” Graham says, “this waterfront area is the busiest area of the park.”

Boaters, too, love the easy launching access points, Graham adds. “A lot of folks will launch their boats or jet skis, and then they’ll set up on the shoreline for

the picnic and just run in and out all day. And that’s basically from sun-up to sunset.”

LAKE ANNA STATE PARK opened in 1983 - about a decade after the creation of Lake Anna in 1971.

“When it was built, it was a water-based recreational park. That was the theme,” says Graham, who arrived at the park in 1993. “And it’s evolved into more of a destination park with overnight facilities.”

The park offers 10 cabins for quiet, comfortable overnight stays. Behind the cabins, you’ll find private points along the lake’s tree-lined shore. There, you can stand in shallow waters and fish—or swim—with your toes tickled by tiny shells and sand.

“There are no televisions in them,” Graham says. “So if you’re looking to get away and enjoy some peace and quiet, they’re good for that. And there are three different docks on the lake that cabin guests can share. It’s easy access once you get moved in.”

DRIVING DOWN A PARK ROAD, Graham talks of treasures, tucked into a tapestry of trees and a watercourse called Pigeon Run.

Here, he says, was once the Goodwin Gold Mine. “It’s a part of Virginia history that not a lot of people are aware of.”

At one time, in the 1830s, gold was mined commercially at Spotsylvania County in over 20 working mines. What is now the state park property was actually once known as “Gold Hill.”

As early as 1829, gold was discovered here—about two decades before the California Gold Rush. Then, in 1849, miners and prospectors moved west. A dozen years later, gold mining was essentially over during the Civil War. But it did pick up again—for a few years— after the war ended in 1865.

Today, with park officials, you can take field trips in a 15-passenger van during the summer months and peer into the remains of an old gold mine shaft. You can also learn how to pan for gold.

“It’s about a two-hour program. It’s pretty popular,” Graham says. “We just really want to do it for the recreation and the history of it.”

BEYOND THE GOLD MINE, Lake Anna State Park includes 15 miles of trails. About a dozen of those miles are multiple use and open to bicyclists and horseback riders as well as foot traffic.

The Fisherman’s Trail spans less than a mile and runs near the lakeshore. The Sawtooth Trail is 2.5 miles long. The Gold Hill Trail reaches across three miles.

Beware: The woods can be wild. This park is a sanctuary for deer, turkey and the occasional black bear.

Spanning 1.5 miles, the scenic Railroad Ford Trail bares historic ties to railroad history. One half of this footpath chugs down what was once a spur of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The other half of this pedestrian-only passage meanders among marsh-like grass and connects fishing holes.

“If you carry a fishing pole, you can fish at different spots along there,” Graham says. “It’s the trail that really follows the lake shoreline more than any of our other trails. It’s got the nice scenery. It’s got the history.”

But, wait — there’s more.“Looking for a longer hike? I might recommend

the Big Woods Trail,” Graham says. “That’s a nice trail.”

Want to Go? Lake Anna State Park is located at 6800

Lawyers Road (VA-601) at Spotsylvania, about 25 miles southwest of Fredericksburg. At the entrance, follow the state park road for about 2.5 miles to the visitor center.

As you stroll down the streets of Spotsylvania, you can expect to find a diverse mix of rich history, outdoor recreation and one-of-a-kind activities surrounded by beautiful rural landscapes. Conveniently located directly off Interstate 95, Spotsylvania has become one of Virginia’s fastest growing

communities and is home to multiple historic landmarks and battlefields from the Civil War. With all Spotsylvania has to offer, it won’t take long for everyone to notice—and feel—something that is simply unique.

Spotsylvania, also known as the “Crossroads of the Civil War,” is rich in historical resources. Throughout the Civil War, several major battles were fought here including one of the top five most significant battles in the war—the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. The battle was fought from May 8th–21st as part of General Ulysses S. Grant’s Overload Campaign. Being one of the bloodiest battles in the war, it caused more than 100,000 combined casualties from both the Union and the Confederate.

The Battle Of Spotsylvania Court House included nearly 20 hours of brutal hand-to-hand combat over a section of the Confederate defenses, which eventually became known as the “Bloody Angle.” Today, this infamous site, along with other portions of the battlefield, are preserved as a part of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park, a unit of the National Park Service commemorating four major battles of the American Civil War.

Because of the county’s strategic location, multiple battles took place on its grounds throughout the Civil War, which is why, today, Spotsylvania is home to several historical sites and battlefields that are open to the public for tours. Witness scenic attractions, such as the Historic Courthouse and the Old Jail, or take a guided tour led by park historians through 25 different battle sites where actual historic battles were fought during armed conflicts that shaped the development of the United States. Lee had his greatest victory throughout his entire career.

Stretching from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville, a driving tour runs through Spotsylvania, giving its participants a chance to witness the birthplaces and homes of nine different U.S. Presidents including James Madison, James Monroe and Thomas Jefferson. Along this 180-mile long trial, several battlefields in Spotsylvania are used as stopping points. Knowledgeable tour guides share the history of some of the most important documents of our time such as the U.S. Constitution, The Declaration of Independence and The Emancipation Proclamation as well as intriguing stories of the Civil War that took place in Spotsylvania and surrounding areas.

Speaking of scenic drives, traverse the new African American Heritage Trail, a trail dedicated to our history that educates the public, inspires local pride and promotes appreciation for the county’s African American contributions over time. The driving tour is 75 miles throughout 407 square miles of Spotsylvania’s lush countryside.

Discovering the unique history of Spotsylvania is not the only way you can become familiar with this special county. There are plenty of family-friendly activities around the area that will bring you an afternoon of fun and laughter. Or become one with nature at the area’s natural attractions such as the Ni River Reservoir or the Hunting Run Reservoir. These two recreational areas offer fishing, boat rentals, picnic shelters and plenty of fun outdoor activities.

While in town, there are many ways to experience one-of-a-kind opportunities that are both fun and educational. At Spotsylvania’s museums and attractions you will find special displays of artifacts and photographs, a full line of America’s top quality boats and even the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

WINERIES OF LAKE ANNA

By Kristen De Deyn Kirk

Exploring a new area is always fun and even more so when you discover a beautiful countryside covered with grapevines and, better yet, wineries. Driving in the southern part of the Lake Anna region, you’ll find it worth your time to stop and sip at some of Virginia’s most accomplished wineries. Plus, it’s easy to keep

your adventure safe, too: Enjoy a small sample or two and then purchase full bottles of wine to uncork later.

Lake Anna Winery 5621 Courthouse Rd. Spotsylvania, VA 22551540-895-5085www.lawinery.comA trip to France in 1981 gave owner Bill Heidig the idea to start a vineyard. He noticed the conditions were similar to his farmland. A few years later, after slowly adding new grapevines with his wife Ann, Bill found himself supplying wineries with grapes that were then turned into award-winning wines. The family knew the time was right to open their own winery. They converted an old barn, and for decades now have been selling their own wine, with sons Eric and Jeff heading up the winery and Bill the vineyard.

Cooper Vineyards 13372 Shannon Hill Rd. Louisa, VA 23903540-894-5474www.coopervineyards.comWine tasting is always fun and especially so at Cooper Vineyards, which was voted Best Tasting Room in Virginia in 2012 and 2013. A new “green” tasting room features a custom 35-foot-long concrete bar, a covered deck overlooking the vineyards and a pond and an outdoor bar. Owners Jeff Cooper and Jacque Hogge founded Cooper Vineyards in 1999 and proudly rely on winemaker Graham Bell to craft their wines with 100 percent Virginia grapes, about half of which are from Cooper Vineyards. They further show their commitment to green practices by using wine barrels constructed from Virginia Oak.

Grayhaven Winery 4675 E Gray Fox Cir.Gum Spring, VA 23065804-556-3917www.grayhavenwinery.comLyn and Chuck Peple started their wine business with a commercial vineyard in 1978. Daughters Jane and Max joined in and stayed on as the family launched their winery in 1995. They specialize in small-batch production of wines, striving for each batch to be unique. They like to bottle their wines about once a week throughout the year and advise visitors and other tasters to purchase their favorites while they’re still available. Overall, they feature about 17 varietals and have four to six wines available for purchase at most times.

Barboursville Vineyards17655 Winery Rd.Barboursville, VA 22923540-832-3824www.barboursvillewine.netWelcome to the home of Octagon, the wine that has come to define the viticultural region evisioned by Thomas Jefferson and established here in 1976 by Gianni and Silvana Zonin. Octagon derives its name

from the symbolic centerpiece of this estate, the Great Room defining the mansion Jefferson created for Governor James Barbour. This wine crowns the pursuit of a constant vision, however, in all one encounters here—to redeem the gift of a gracious, generous ground, with vintages of vivid beauty.

Byrd Cellars5847 River Rd. West, Goochland, VA 23063804-652-5663www.byrdcellars.comByrd Cellars started about nine years ago and believes in producing delicious wines while remaining dedicated to protecting the earth that supports their grapes. Located on conserved forestland, this winery and vineyard (at two nearby locations) shuns pesticides, relies on organics when fertilizing and uses a microdrip irrigation system to conserve water. They recycle their bottles and bottle closures and offer customers 50 cents back on returned bottles. Grape production by-products are reused in the vineyard as well.

Elk Island Winery5759 River Rd. The island was originally part of Thomas Jefferson’s Elk Hill farm, located next to the Klinefelters’ own nearby grain farm. They take a small-batch wine approach, offering a couple handfuls of wines. Unique to their winery are Terroirier White and Terroirier Red. Each wine is a blend and produced in honor of the couple’s pets, terriers Oscar, Macaroni and Angus. A portion of each sale of these wines is donated to Maryland Westie Rescue,

Potomac Cairn Terrier Rescue and Yorkie Rescue.

His daughter Mitzi and son-in-law James Batterson joined in his passion, and Mitzi currently serves as president of the Virginia Wineries Association and works to promote Virginia wine and smaller, family-owned wineries. James crafts the James River Cellars wines, offering more than 15 varieties. He and his wife produce a unique collection called the Civil War wines, featuring four choices: Reserve Chardonnay, Monitor vs. CSS Virginia, Hanover and Cold Harbor White. Each label depicts a scene from the Civil War.

Keswick Vineyards1575 Keswick Winery Dr.Keswick, VA 22947434-244-3341 Keswick Vineyards is a family owned and operated Virginia winery and vineyard located in the heart of Virginia wine country on the Monticello wine trail, just outside of Charlottesville, VA. Originally from Michigan, Al and Cindy Schornberg chose the historic site that is Edgewood Estate for their dream vineyard after searching the country, recognizing its potential for producing world class wines. Specializing in producing small lots of high quality Virginia wines, a minimalist approach is taken in the winery with the focus instead being on the vineyards to produce the best possible fruit to work with. Most of the wines are fermented using natural or native yeast, and all of the current red wines are bottled un-fined and un-filtered. While approachable when young, most of the wines produced at Keswick Vineyards will see 5–10 years quite easily in the bottle, reflecting the personal tastes of the owners and winemaker.

“THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF DIFFERENT FISHING TECHNIQUES AND MERCHANDISE OUT THERE. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT WORKS BEST AT LAKE ANNA?” I GET THAT QUESTION A LOT. WHILE THERE IS NO REAL “MAGIC LURE” THAT WILL CATCH A FISH WITH EVERY CAST, THERE ARE A FEW BASICS THAT CONSISTENTLY PRODUCE ON LAKE ANNA.

Rod, Reel, LineThe first piece of the puzzle is obviously the right rod and reel combo. Many avid anglers have thousands of dollars in different rod and reel combinations. For a competitive or professional angler, a slight change in action or line diameter may be the difference that helps to win a tournament. For most recreational anglers it is important to find one or two rod combinations that can work for many different situations. In most situations you could get away with one lighter action spinning rod spooled with 6-8 pound test for crappie fishing and lighter finesse style bass fishing. The second would be a medium/heavy action spinning rod with 10-14 pound test for heavier largemouth techniques and Striper fishing. You’ll want to get reels that come with an extra spool in case you have tangles or need to switch the type of line. Flouro-carbon and monofilament fishing lines will do just about everything needed in Lake Anna. Remember monofilament stretches and floats while flourocarbon sinks and provides more sensitivity. PH

Soft plastics for Largemouth Bass FishingThere are thousands of options out there, but I’m going to save some time for you. There are two baits that are staples on Lake Anna. The “shakey head” style finesse worm and “Carolina rigged” lizard. These techniques catch a lot of bass on Lake Anna. Stick with colors in the natural browns and greens in clear water and blues and blacks in stained water.

Crankbaits for Largemouth and Striped BassDeep diving crankbaits are another “must have” they are perfect imitations of the larger shad in Lake Anna. You can grind them in rocks and channel edges to catch big Largemouth. Or troll them in deep flats for Striped Bass. Some of the largest fish in Lake Anna have been caught on deep diving crankbaits.

Slip bobbers, small minnows and grubs for Crappie fishingCrappie fishing is a lot of fun and makes a delicious meal at the end of the day. Slip bobbers allow you to set the depth of your bait very easily. Many times Crappie will “suspend” at a particular depth. The slip bobber will keep you in the “strike zone” more often. Small 2 inch grubs on 1/16 to 1/8 ounce jigheads are another great lure for catching Black Crappie. A very slow and steady retrieve around brush, rocks and bridges can catch a lot of “specks.”

Is it really that simple? No. There are hundreds of factors that go into catching fish consistently such as barometric pressure, wind, water temperature and much more. But, all of the gear and techniques listed above really are common “go to” techniques for this lake. You’ll find them on the boat decks of many of the successful anglers around Lake Anna.

DELICIOUS DISHESA BOUNTY OF GOODNESS FOR YOUR LAKESIDE TABLE | BY BARRETT BAKER

Warmer weather is always a welcome event around the lake. You can spend more time out on (or in) the water, kickstart Vitamin D production in your skin with a little solar exposure, and drag the grill out from its winter slumber to take advantage of local harvests without putting too much effort into food preparation.Keeping things simple is the best part of outdoor meals, whether it’s just trying a refreshing new beverage, some

easy dockside appetizers or a full-blown meal at the backyard picnic table. With that in mind, here are a few choice recipes that allow you to take advantage of what you might be finding now at local Farmers Markets or roadside stands so you can fuel up for whatever adventures lay ahead. Feel free to mix and match items together or in combination with your tried-and-true family favorites.

When boat owners hear the words “boat winterization,” it usually means it’s the time of year when summer starts to slip away, bringing all the fun water activities with it. Taking care of your boat before off season is not the

most entertaining process, but it is just as important as taking care of it during the summer time.

Whether you keep your boat on the water or haul it into a garage or storage unit, it requires a fair amount of attention before and during the colder months. The more care you give your boat during the off season, the less breakdowns, expensive repairs and issues you will have to deal with in the future. With these suggestions, you will be a proud owner of a clean, well-maintained and long-lasting boat that will most certainly keep you at ease—and impress the locals!

Before you do anything to prepare your boat for the winter, take it out at least one more time; however, this time keep a close eye on what you would like to repair, replace or modify such as the carpets, outdated electronics or needed supplies—basically anything you said you wanted over the summer, but never got around to it. You can convert these tasks into a schedule of projects to do over the fall, winter and spring time in order to have your boat fresh and ready for the boating season.

After a few last runs, a good cleaning on the inside and outside of your boat will always benefit you in the long run. Take home any dishes or food, empty the icebox, air out the cushions and anything else you will be happy you did once you board the boat for the first time again next season. After all of that is taken care of, give your boat a good scrubbing, by wiping down the interior and scrubbing the carpets. You should also clean the anchor, chain, rode and the scuppers, flush the head with freshwater and pump out the holding tank. Once your boat is all cleaned, remember to leave the doors and lockers open to air it all out.

Winterizing your engine system comes next. You should fill your gas tank up to prevent any condensation, oxidation or spoilage from accumulating over the winter season. To avoid any oil from settling at the bottom of your engine, remove the spark

plugs and spray “fogging oil” inside the carburetor and down the spark plug holes.

Turn off your water heater and fresh water tanks and completely drain before adding non-toxic anti-freeze. You should also run non-toxic anti-freeze through the air conditioning pumps, sump pumps, fish wells, bilge pumps and ice maker.

After you’re done winterizing your boat, there are a few ways you can store your boat. The owner’s manual will give you the recommended way to store your boat during the winter, but here are a few “must-dos:”

• Cover your boat to keep the snow and ice off, whether you use wood frames and plastic tarps or a canvas cover

• Put moisture absorbers in the cabin and lockers• Remove your batteries from your boat and

store indoors• Store your boat stern downward in order to

drain the rain and melted snow through the scuppers

• Never use a portable heater or auto battery charger in the bilge

Lake Anna is known for its pristine boating conditions, which is why more and more boaters flock to the area to spend weeks at a time on the water. But there is nothing worse than looking forward to an afternoon on the lake and then getting shut down by your own boat. It takes a lot of time and effort to keep your boat in good condition for the winter season, but it’s worth the feeling of accomplishment knowing all your hard work and precision has paid off once boating season hits again.

Test your water sport skills or simply sit back and watch as you enjoy one of the many activities available on the lake. While weekends and holidays are a bit more crowded, there is usually more than enough room for everyone to have both a relaxing and adventurous vacation at Lake Anna.

The Sandbar Over time, silt naturally built up in the middle of Lake Anna creating

a sandbar submerged in waist-deep water, which has drawn many boats for decades now. Locals and the occasional guests flock to this unique spot to unwind while grilling out, playing water volleyball or simply enjoying an ice cold beverage, all while standing or floating in the cool water. You may even get the chance to meet the Sandbar President, First Lady or the President’s Captain who help maintain this raft-up hangout spot throughout the year.

The BahamasAcross from the North Anna Power Station at the lower

end of the lake lies a chain of islands perfect for swimming, cooking out, playing games, socializing and relaxing. This hidden jewel of Lake Anna is what the locals refer to as “The

Bahamas” because it’s the perfect spot to go to for an afternoon to stretch your legs, soak up the sun and enjoy the feeling of sand between your toes. Explore your way around Pirate’s Cove or simply drop anchor at the shoreline of one of the islands and let all your worries slip away.

Lakefront Dining

If you start to get hungry while out on the water, you’re in luck because there are six different, and delicious, restaurants located on and nearby the Lake, some of which are accessible by boat. Nibble on an appetizer or indulge in one of the many entrées offered from fresh sushi at Asian Café to pulled pork BBQ at Billiken’s BBQ—all while enjoying a gorgeous view. Many of the restaurants along the lake offer both special and holiday events throughout every season that are fun for all ages. With all these lakefront restaurants have to offer, you’ll be glad you forgot to pack your lunch!

safety tips While on and off the Lake Spending time by the lakeside is one of the most simple, yet traditional activities at Lake Anna and is a great way to get the family and friends together. It should be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience—you can lounge in the sun, play games with the kids, have a cookout and be thankful that all your worries were left at home.

Lake Anna offers plenty of recreational water activities as well, from boating and jet skiing to grilling out at “The Bahamas” sandbar for an afternoon. But while you are letting loose, be sure to remember that there are still important safety rules to be aware of while on and off the water. By keeping safety in mind, you, your family and friends will all have a fun and safe vacation that is remembered for all the right reasons. Drowning Drowning may be one of the most obvious, yet most important dangers of lake safety hazards. Lake water tends to rapidly change and switch flows without warning, so it is important to be aware of where you are swimming and just how deep the water is. Underwater Hazards Unfortunately, there are other types of hazards to be aware of while vacation-ing on the lake. Broken shells, fishing hooks, sharp metal or broken glass from boat accidents may be re-siding at the bottom and around the lake, which can easily cause minor or serious lacerations. With this being said, it would be best to wear water shoes while standing in the lake or hanging out on the dock.Be Cautious of the Weather Be sure to check the weather before heading out on the lake. By do-ing so, you can plan your day accordingly and feel safe knowing what the day is going to bring. While out on the water, be mindful of other boats passing by. The wake caused by a boat going high speed can create powerful wakes that can impact your own boat. Pay attention to Your surroundings Slow down while passing others and approach the wake at a 45-degree angle to avoid anyone getting hurt. While out boating, be sure to keep an eye out for any rules or regulations signs. These will not only keep the Lake Anna Civic Association’s Emergency Service Committee and residents happy, but yourself happy in the long run!

Children safety tips:• Always have an adult around while children are swimming or

playing by the lake.• Children should wear a life jacket while in the water and riding

on motor-powered vehicles.• Allow children to swim in designated swimming areas only• If a child is struggling in the water, throw him or her a floating

device instead of helping them yourself.• Only let those 16 years or older operate a motor-powered vehicle • Dress your child in bright colors so he or she can easily be spotted.

Grilling out safety tips:• Propane and charcoal should only be used outdoors• Keep your grill clean by removing any fat or grease built up

from previous usage.• If you are grilling out at the lake house, place the grill as far

away from house as possible and keep away from the kids and pets.

• Never leave the grill unattended.• Make sure the gas grill lid is open before lighting it.• Bacteria grows at any temperatures above freezing and stays

alive until about 65 degrees—keep your food cool until it hits the grill and keep it covered!

Pet safety:• Make sure your dog knows how to swim!• Look out for blue-green algae—it can be very dangerous for

your pooch and yourself.• If your dog is out swimming, make sure

there is a logical way to get him or her back on land.• Run-off drainage can make its way into the

lake, so don’t let your pup drink the water.• If you are not by the lake, keep your

pet on a leash.• Dry your pooch off after a swim so

there is no unwanted bacteria on his or her fur.

Dockside Dos and Don’ts:• Neatly coil loose or excess lines both

on and off the deck to ensure no one trips over them.

• Never connect a dock water supply to the pressure side of the water system on the boat—it may cause it to sink.

• Because wet environments are extremely dangerous when it comes to electricity, make sure electrical connections are properly installed and safely maintained.

• Just because you are on the dock, doesn’t mean you can’t accidently fall or be pushed off, so continue to wear your life vest until you are off the dock completely.

• When climbing on and off the boat with an armload of provisions for the day, be aware of your surroundings when you stretch for that first step.

For years, everyone who visits Lake Anna has asked the question: “What is there to do at Lake Anna?” Lake Anna is finally gaining the commercial boom we’ve been expecting. We have compiled a list that encompasses all that Lake Anna has to offer.

The Lake Anna Visitor Center is now established at 208 Lake Front Dr. in Mineral, next to the Lake Anna Island complex. The Lake Anna Visitor Center contains information from local businesses, services and attractions with updated information available as it is ready. Open daily, it’s one of the best locations to learn more about Lake Anna or have your questions answered regarding the area.

The Boardwalk on Lake Anna is home to the Tim’s River Shore restaurant chain, known as Tim’s at Lake Anna. This establishment is a restaurant and crabhouse with a resort feel. Indoor and outdoor waterfront seating are available for patrons hoping to enjoy waterside dining.

Lake Anna Plaza, a waterfront townhome developement on the southside of the lake at the 208 Bridge, has two restaurants that offer delicious food with beautiful views. Billiken’s BBQ Restaurant is a brand new restaurant where you can order by boat, car or sit inside and enjoy brisket, pulled pork and cookies with bacon. The Asian Café serves the finest Japanese cuisine featuring fresh sushi, sashimi and hibachi. The area also boasts a 24-hour gym named Fisher’s Fitness, the

full-service hair salon, Chameleon & Co., and the Lake Anna Yacht Club, which has boat slips available for lease or purchase, free Wi-Fi at the docks and the Club House, membership to Fisher’s Fitness and much more. The Lake Anna Information Center is located on the water next door in the wood-sided building with lake information and also hosts The Lake is Great Store & Gift Shop. You will also find the Lake Anna Visitor Center located right behind the Plaza home to maps, brochures, information and much more—a great introduction to Lake Anna.

The crown jewel of attractions in the Lake Anna area would have to be the Lake Anna State Park. The park is 2,810 acres with more than 10 miles of lake frontage. The land in Lake Anna State Park used to be known as “Gold Hill” and contained the Goodwin Gold Mine. Gold was discovered first in 1829, then peaked in the 1880s. The Lake Anna State Park has rental cabins, camping, more than 15 miles of hiking trails, lakeshore picnicking, a guarded swimming beach, food concession stand, a bathhouse and a children’s fishing pond. The park is open daily, year-round. The parking lot is usually filled to capacity on popular weekends, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day, so get an early start if you have your heart set on the State Park

Historical SitesLake Anna is steeped in Civil War and American history. There

are a plethora of sites that contain tons of history. The most notable include the Battle of Chancellorsville in Spotsylvania, which resulted in more casualties than any other engagement ever fought on Virginia soil, including the wounding of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Chancellorsville was called General R.E. Lee’s greatest victory.

The site of the May 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse gives 45-minute guided walking tours from the “Bloody Angle” where the battle lasted two weeks and included bitter hand-to-hand combat between the soldiers. This was a continuation of the Battle of the Wilderness nearby. These are just two of the battlefield areas easily accessible in our area. With many notable figures who were born and lived in our area, there is an extensive list of further historic sites that could fill this entire publication. For your convenience, please visit the Historical Information page at LakeAnnaGuide.com for a list and links to many of the most popular spots to explore in the future.

EXPAND YOUR GREAT ROOM INTO THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Lake Living OUTSIDE

NNow that you’re living on the lake, you may find it difficult to want to come inside, especially as the days get warmer. As you’re decorating, keep in mind that you can let your living space flow right

out the door and onto your deck, patio or a serene oasis in your yard. With the right furniture and accessories you can create a room outside.

This is especially popular during the summertime and for people who have a pool. However, if you don’t have a pool, there are still ways to bring the indoors out. You can create an open-air living area. In addition to furniture, you can get outdoor bars, outdoor fireplaces, rugs and even beds.

Today’s furniture is not your grandparents’ metal, wood or plastic with cushions that must come inside each night. Manufacturers are using recycled materials. One line is made from more than 90 percent recycled plastic bottles.

Cushions are more comfortable and stand up better to being outside. Manufacturers are bringing indoor comfort outside but with materials that can weather the elements.

Most cushion material can get rained on and will dry quickly. Some are actually cushions surrounded by plastic and then

Lake Living OUTSIDE surrounded by plastic material so the actual cushion never gets

wet. You won’t have to bring them in until the season’s over. For the furniture base, you’ll see a lot of aluminum, which

stands up well to being rained on. Not so much for cast iron or wrought iron—it looks great at first but will rust after a couple of seasons. Several manufacturers carry cast aluminum, offering the look of cast iron along with the durability of aluminum.

What about when you need a little shielding from the sun as it glimmers off the lake? Umbrellas have gone beyond the pole that sticks in a hole in the table. Instead, the umbrella is cantilevered to hang over a table with a big curved arm so you can move it to where you want shade. Raising and lowering the umbrella is much easier too.

Wood outdoor furniture is still popular, but now the pieces often have a light coat of epoxy to protect the wood so it won’t turn gray as it weathers. This way you’ll get the look and feel of wood without the maintenance issues that arise with exposed wood.

When it’s time to turn in at night you can stay outside if you like. Several companies make outdoor beds, even with canopies for privacy for sleeping in the night air or for enjoying the sun during the day.

Make the most out of your lake oasis by shopping for the right décor and furniture, and you’ll get to spend as much time as possible enjoying your spectacular view on Lake Anna.

cinema series for the community. Our “Summer Cinema Series” held on Tuesday evenings offers families a way to enjoy kid-friendly movies without having to travel or pay high theater prices. The series continues with an October focus on scary movies, a December focus on Holiday movies and a feature on American Classics in March.

Fall in Love with our family-friendly events! We celebrate the weekend with “It’s Finally Friday,” an outdoor concert at Walton Park in Mineral. Held on the last Friday of the month in May, June and July, these events feature great beach and Motown Music in a beautiful park setting. On the second Saturday of the month in July, August and September we “rock out” at Courthouse Square in downtown Louisa for our “Saturdays in the Square” concerts. Enjoy family outings at the “Cue and Cruz” in July and the “Annual Air Show” at the Airport. The “Fall Harvest Festival” in October is an outing the whole family can enjoy with the Mineral Farmer’s Market with an arts and crafts show, children’s activities, hay rides and pony

rides. There’s a “Haunted Trail” at the Betty Queen Center in October for those who are brave enough to enter. Chili fans are tempted with the “Annual Chili Cook-Off ” at Earlyhouse in October. And we wrap up the family-friendly year with some wonderful hometown events like our “Louisa Christmas Tree Lighting,” “Breakfast with Santa” and the “Louisa Christmas Festival and Parade” in December.

Fall in Love with our history! One hundred-fifty years ago, the Battle of Trevilian Station in Louisa was the largest all-cavalry battle during the Civil War. Recently, in 2014, the town re-created this dramatic battle by bringing back hundreds of cavalry horses, mounted re-enactors,

Madison Countyride. Hike. Taste. StayWith thousands of beautiful acres of land, scenic hike trails, unique shops and restaurants, several wineries and drenched in rich history, Madison County truly is a special place to—as the locals say—ride, hike, taste and stay. The county got its name from the Madison family that owned a large territory of land along the Rapidan River. One of the descendents from this family is none other than James Madison, one of our nation’s earliest presidents, whose estate, known as Montpelier, still resides in the neighboring Orange County.

Madison Countyride. Hike. Taste. Stay

Along with President Madison, several other historical figures have spent time in Madison County such as the Paleo-Indians, General Stonewall Jackson and the royal governor Alexander Spotswood. But that’s not all the history that occurred in the county. President

Herbert Hoover once bought land in the mountain area of Madison where he built his summer camp. His official visit to the town in August 1929 is now celebrated annually by the locals of the county.

The reason so many significant people have made their mark in Madison is because of its convenient location. Trails and roads are placed throughout the Piedmont area of the county leading up to the infamous Blue Ridge Mountains, which led 18th and 19th century travelers to the Shenandoah Valley, which at the time was known as the breadbasket of the Confederacy during the Civil War and was used as a back door for Confederate raids.

Because so much history has taken place in Madison, there are plenty of destinations throughout the area that share, preserve and portray all that has occurred over the decades. Both walking and driving tours are offered in Madison giving a special insight on the town and its place in history while strolling down Main Street or driving through the scenic Route 231. You will also find several historical buildings, many of which are found in Downtown, that you can journey through during a self-guided tour. Or take an afternoon to discover all there is to know about the history behind the Madison County Court House building.

Located just a few miles from Madison County is The Graves Mill Historical Park, which offers a unique glimpse into the past commemorating the significance and history of the Village of Graves Mill. The Park is home to a stone memorial and bronze plaque honoring the 40 Virginian men who served during the War Between the States. You will also find a replica of the county’s 1900s post office building and some of the earliest history of Graves Mill and its nearby areas.

While in Madison County, there are plenty of outdoor activities to participate in while witnessing the breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and foothills. From trout fishing and hunting to horseback riding and bird watching,

you can always find something to do in the midst of beautiful scenery.

Explore a few of the 33,000 acres of the Shenandoah National Park in Madison, where you’ll find popular hiking trails such as Old Rag and the gorgeous White Oak Canyon Falls. Or explore the Blue Ridge Mountains by foot or car and you will quickly become accustomed to the gorgeous culture and atmosphere of Madison County. For an up close and personal look at the Blue Ridge Mountains, take a guided hiking adventure with a local expert who knows all the ins and outs of these breathtaking mountains.

Fishing is a popular activity in Madison County due to its close proximity to multiple rivers and ponds. But that’s not the only outdoor activity that draws people to Madison. Take part in local traditions such as apple picking in the fall with over 27 different varieties of apples or take a moonlight hayride. Bond with one another and rough it for the night as you camp at the Shenandoah National Park, where there are four campgrounds open in the spring, summer and fall, all of which offer a relaxing and natural atmosphere.

For a chance to explore Madison through a local’s eye, you can take a walking or driving tour through the country, Skyline Drive and even Civil War trails. These tours give you the chance to discover all Madison County has to offer and witness spectacular views.

A great way to experience the outdoors is by “tasting” it too. There are three wineries located in Madison County that produce quality wines known both nationally and internationally. The wineries in the area include a rooftop tasting room, Virginia’s only solar powered winery and entrées made with fresh and local ingredients. Each winery offers exclusive tours of their facilities and will certainly be a delightful experience all the way down to the last sip.

For more delicious beverages and eats, stop by one of the local restaurants in the area for a fine dining experience or have a casual lunch at a local hang out spot offering tasty, fresh food that will satisfy everyone’s taste buds! The county is so dedicated to staying true to the mountains that they host the annual Taste of the Mountains Saturday Festival featuring history, artwork, music and good food. Savory SelectionsBarbecue may just be one of the locals’ favorites at

the Lake when it comes to “farm to table” eats. Whether you are having a cookout by the dock or just craving that sweet and spicy taste while out to eat, you can’t go wrong with a classic barbeque sandwich. The source of the barbeque ingredients at Lake Anna often comes straight from area farmers and then slow cooked the old-fashioned way, providing you and your family with amazing, succulent flavors. Top yours off with fresh coleslaw, or keep it classic with a dollop of chipotle barbeque sauce. With rib meat that falls right off the bone and pulled pork with that rich, smoky taste, your taste buds are bound to be satisfied after just one bite.

Chipotle pork, fresh yellow and cherry tomatoes, avocado salad, hominy grits and lime. This mouth-watering meal is just one of the many dishes you can find at Lake Anna using local and seasonal ingredients. Because the area is so in touch with the outdoors, the local restaurants like to keep the food they serve natural as well. This is why you will find a wide range of dishes made with the freshest ingredients that are so delicious, you will want to come back for more.

After dinner, or if you’re just in the mood to satisfy your sweet tooth, be sure to taste the desserts available at Lake Anna. Here you will find homemade pies that are both sweet and savory and, best of all, made from scratch. One flavor you will find is cherry-cranberry pie filled with sweet cherries, cranberries and topped with pecan crumbs—a delicious combination. Order your homemade pie warm or cold and become more and more

dining|lake annapleased with every bite. You will also find all different kinds of cakes, cookies, brownies, soft serve ice cream and much more, all of which are the perfect ending to a delicious meal. Needless to say, when it comes to desserts at Lake Anna—we don’t mess around!

By far one of the most unique memorials from the Civil War stands in a family cemetery on the Ellwood Plantation, a small plantation a mile away from the field hospital where Lieutenant General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson was treated for a shattered left arm. It was May 2, 1863, and the general had just led a successful battle against union forces in Chancellorsville, Va., when the unthinkable happened—confusion led to shots being fired among his own troops, and Jackson

became the accidental victim of an attack by his own men. He was rushed to a field hospital where the arm was amputated by Dr. Hunter H. McGuire.

After the amputation, Jackson was taken to Fairfield Plantation near Guinea Station, where he

was to take a train to Richmond after recovering from his surgery. Jackson’s doctors expected him to survive his injuries, but he died of pneumonia eight days later in the farm office of the plantation. Sometime during all the chaos, Jackson’s Second Corps chaplain Reverend Beverley Tucker Lacy visited the hospital where Jackson had been treated and found that the amputated left arm was still there. The reverend decided to take the limb with him to his brother’s home, Ellwood Plantation, a mile away from the hospital. He buried Jackson’s arm in the family cemetery, and it was never reunited with the rest of Jackson’s remains, which are buried in Lexington. In 1903, Lieutenant James Power Smith marked the plot housing Jackson’s arm with a granite monument. In 1921, General Smedley Butler had the arm dug up to confirm it was really buried there, and his men reburied it and marked the gravesite with a bronze plaque on top of the existing monument.

Although Jackson’s body was taken back to Lexington for burial, the farm office at Fairfield where Jackson passed away is now a dedicated “Stonewall” Jackson Shrine. The main house on the plantation burned down after the war, but the office where the famous general drew his final breath remains an historic landmark that still contains 45 percent of the original fabric that was there at the time of Jackson’s visit. The chaplain, after burying Jackson’s arm at Ellwood, joined the general at Fairfield for two days where he held devotions with him in the farm office. Jackson’s wife and baby daughter came to visit Jackson on May 7. Fortunately the family got to spend a few days together before Jackson succumbed to the pneumonia. He is reported to have said on his last day, “It is the Lord’s Day; my wish is fulfilled. I have always desired to die on Sunday.” In his final moments, Jackson cried out, “Order A.P. Hill to prepare for action! Pass the infantry to the front rapidly! Tell Major Hawks—” He left the command unfinished, instead uttering the last words: “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.”
