2015 annuaL report

From the PresidentDear Friends:

One of the phrases you often hear around the Lake George Land Conservancy is that we try to “run this organization like a business.” What, exactly, do these words mean?

First, they mean that we are clear about our purpose: Protecting the world-famous water quality of Lake George and preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding land. As you know, several other organizations have much the same objective. What defines the LGLC is how we pursue this goal: Working with willing landowners to protect land forever. In many cases, we help landowners create an easement that expresses their conservation and estate planning desires. In some cases, we purchase land so that the lake shore and the ridgelines will always remain in a natural state. Always, we try to “think smart,” looking for creative strategies that provide benefits to landowners as well as advance lake protection.

Second, the business of the LGLC is to focus on land that has critical importance to the lake. Every organization operates with limited resources, which requires setting priorities and making choices. Our scientific focus begins by identifying land, typically acreage surrounding major tributaries that flow into the lake, where development most threatens water quality. Keeping land in its natural state, after all, is nature’s own way of protecting water quality. Our land-protection priorities also reflect what we learn about habitats and the visual significance of a setting.

Third, the LGLC strives to operate at the highest level of efficiency. In simple terms, this organization makes the most out of every dollar you invest. We recognize that you have choices about where to direct your support for the lake. In response to your confident support, we promise to do all we can with every dollar to honor that trust.

We all know that talk is easy; you have every right to ask how we “walk the walk.” Here’s the big picture: Since our founding in 1988, the Lake George Land Conservancy, working with its partners, has protected more than 10,000 acres of land and nearly 35,000 feet of shoreline. That is more than one acre of land and three feet of shoreline for every calendar day since our founding.

What have we accomplished over the last two years? In 2014, the LGLC completed six preservation projects (involving donation, easement, or purchase), which together protected almost 500 acres of land. These projects include Matty’s Mountain in the Towns of Lake George and Lake Luzerne, the Van Hart Preserve in Fort Ann, the Edgecomb Pond conservation easement in Bolton, the Terzian Woodlot in Silver Bay, Town of Hague, and additions to the Anthony’s Nose and Gull Bay Preserves in Putnam.

In 2015, the LGLC completed six additional projects, protecting another 300 acres. This work included the conservation of critical land on South Mountain, the almost-pristine stretch of ridgeline from Ticonderoga down to Anthony’s Nose, which is highly visible from Heart Bay, Rogers’ Rock, and Hague. Additionally, in 2015 the organization completed two conservation easements along Hague Brook, and received donations of 67 forested acres in Bolton, and 6 acres with 255 feet of lake shoreline in Putnam. Finally, a highlight of 2015 was bringing to a successful conclusion years of work on the Pinnacle project in Bolton Landing. We are thrilled that this highly visible tract of land has been protected forever by the LGLC’s effort in partnership with the Fund for Lake George and the Town of Bolton.

The public benefit provided by the LGLC extends well beyond our primary purpose of lake and land preservation. Most of you know that our organization has created remarkable public preserves that provide opportunities for hiking and environmental education. The South Mountain project, for example, calls for extending the trail system all the way from Ticonderoga down to Gull Bay. These trails will attract hikers, leaf-peepers, environmentalists, and history-buffs who wish to learn more about the momentous events that occurred on and

near the lake during our nation’s infancy. In the same way, the Pinnacle Project includes a public hiking trail that has already been used by a thousand people. Looking ahead, the Bolton Community Trail System will link the top of the mountain to the town’s business district. This recreational facility will enhance Bolton as a “destination site,” with obvious economic as well as environmental benefits. The South Mountain project will do the same for Ticonderoga.

Currently, the LGLC manages twelve public preserves all around the lake, involving almost 5,500 acres and 35 miles of trails with many amazing overlook views. To see all the preserves, go to www.lglc.org and click on “Hike Lake George.” More than 10,000 people signed in as hikers in 2015, which suggests that the actual number of people enjoying these preserves is several times higher. Most popular are the Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob and the Cat and Thomas Mts. Preserve in Bolton, both of which host more than 4,000 people each year. When you add in the 800+ people who joined the LGLC on guided hikes, including the hugely successful Hike-A-Thon, you can see that these preserves are significant features in every Lake George community. Of course, safe and inviting trails require on-going management. The LGLC engages seasonal stewardship assistants and volunteers to maintain trails and parking areas as well as the kiosks where you can find trail maps and other helpful information.

The bottom line is, with your support, the Lake George Land Conservancy is making an ever-greater difference in the future of our beloved lake. Our protection will endure forever. On behalf of the organization’s board of directors, staff, and many volunteers, I invite your support of our efforts. Above all, we make it our business to ensure that this national treasure of a lake basin will delight members of your families for generations to come.

Sincerely,

John J. Macionis President, Board of Directors

conservationmosaicGood conservation requires long-range vision. In addition to evaluating land for presence of shoreline, streams, rocky slopes and ridges, wetlands, vernal pools, and rare habitats, we look at the big picture too: How can the land connect to other protected forests and mountains, now or in the future?

Connected lands provide better water quality protection, more recreational opportunities, and less disturbance for wildlife. By focusing on key environmental characteristics, we can piece together a mosaic of protected lands that results in a contiguous landscape that is healthier than the sum of its parts.

Henry M. Rowan, an inspiring philanthropist and conservationist who made a lasting impact on the Lake George Land Conservancy and Lake George itself, passed away on December 9, 2015. He was 92.

Mr. Rowan was introduced to Lake George at an early age by his mother, Margaret Boyd Rowan, who had brought her children to the lake first to camp, and later to spend summers at a family cottage she had built on land she purchased in 1937 in Silver Bay. The cottage has been enjoyed ever since by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Margaret also instilled a sense of conservation in her son, and in 1990 Henry Rowan and his late wife, Betty, made a generous challenge gift of $250,000 towards the protection of a 168-acre property on the northeastern shore of Lake George. The land, which includes 4,470 feet of shoreline, is the centerpiece of more than three miles of protected shoreline that was the focus of a major cooperative conservation effort undertaken by the LGLC, the Silver Bay Association, the Adirondack Nature Conservancy and Adirondack Land Trust, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

That 168-acre property was sold to New York State in 1994, and dedicated on July 10, 1999 as the Margaret Boyd Rowan Preserve, in honor of Mr. Rowan’s mother and her love for Lake George.

Since that first gift, the Rowan family has continued to support the LGLC, contributing more than $2 million for land conservation projects throughout the Lake George basin.

Mr. Rowan provided invaluable leadership and inspired generations of others to also give towards the protection of the northeastern shoreline, many of whom are still supporting our work today. Much of the LGLC’s success through the years can be attributed to Mr. Rowan’s confidence in the LGLC, and validation of the need for conservation.

The family legacy of caring for the lands and waters of Lake George is continued by his daughter, Virginia “Ginny” Rowan Smith, who has been an advisory board member with the LGLC since 2000 and, with her husband, Manning, has also been a major financial supporter.

A lifetime of loving Lake George. Left, a young Henry Rowan running a 6 hp mo-torboat, 1933; Below, racing Stars on Lake George, 2006.

Lake George lost another great conservationist and community hero with the passing of Thomas Tilley Adams, attorney, on Dec. 16, 2015 at 86 years of age, just one month after being honored by the Connecticut Bar Association for being admitted to practice law in the state of Connecticut for 50 years.

The summer of 1969 brought Mr. Adams, his wife Virginia, and their family, to Heart Bay in Ticonderoga to stay in the vacation home he had rented sight-unseen, based on a friend’s suggestion. “It was love at first sight,” Mr. Adams had explained, “we all fell in love with the lake.”

After years of enjoying that same vacation home, which was part of the old Rogers’ Rock Club, Mr. Adams heard the 120-acre property was for sale and he went into action; he talked to his good friend and business partner Marcelino Lavin about the land and they decided to purchase it together.

The Adams and Lavin families spent years fixing up existing buildings that were once part of the well known Rogers’ Rock Club, keeping the land much as it had been over the

past century. The land also included Rogers’ Slide, a famous landmark named for Robert Rogers, a larger-than-life character of colonial history and the French and Indian War.

“The Lavin and Adams families have a great love for Lake George, and a strong desire to see its shoreline and environs preserved. Our families hope this second donation will, like the first, encourage gifts to the Conservancy of other shoreline and adjacent property in the great north basin of Lake George.”

Tom Adams after the donation of Little Slide in 2004

The families chose to donate the 41-acre undeveloped tract, which included the Slide and 2,260 feet of shoreline, to the LGLC in 1998. Six years later the families donated a second, 53-acre piece, known as the “Little Slide.”

The initial 41-acre piece was transferred to New York State in 2003 and added to the State’s Forest Preserve. Little Slide continues to be owned by the LGLC and will see its debut in the annual Lake George Hike-A-Thon in 2016.

Though he was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, Mr. Adams

continued to enjoy his treasured getaway with his children and grandchildren.

As an active member of his hometown of Wilton, CT, and elsewhere throughout his life, Mr. Adams was a tireless advocate for the ideals he felt most important, including the conservation of Lake George. As a trustee of The Shoff Foundation (previously the Sheldon T. Shoff Charitable Trust), he guided their generous support of the LGLC, with annual gifts since 2008. Mr. Adams’ son, Douglas, is now vice president of the Foundation.

“I expect generations to come to enjoy the land as it is, to appreciate what’s here.”

“Our father, in partnership with our mother Virginia, cared deeply for the landscape and the well-being of its inhabitants. He saw the two as thoroughly linked. He also loved the local and regional history of the Lake George area and inspired us, his children, with that same love. For him preservation was not just about the past: it was about the future as well.”

From the Treasurer Financially, this was the most successful year in the LGLC’s history. Virtually all debt was paid off, following the sale of the Berry Pond property to NY State. Generous donors continued to provide grants, fund projects and stewardship operations; and two new million-dollar endowments were established that will enhance long-term financial ability to continue the work of protecting land around this special place, Lake George.

After the 2008 financial crisis, it became apparent that the LGLC’s business plan needed to dramatically change. Prior to that we were a “middleman,” acquiring land opportunistically, financed primarily with short term loans from wealthy donors and other supportive entities, holding it for a relatively short period until NY State purchased it from us. Project fundraising and proceeds from land sales to the state provided the wherewithal to extinguish loans and start the process again. Now we no longer can rely on short term sale of property to the state. While we expect the state occasionally to purchase some property, our business plan anticipates owning land for extensive periods, perhaps forever.

You will notice in the following summary financial statements our new business plan is fully implemented and we thank you, our wonderful supporters, for making all of this possible.

Michael O’Reilly LGLC Treasurer and Vice President of Finance

Explanation of Financials

In-kind donations with approximate values of $20,000 and $800 were received for legal work and stewardship, respectively, in FY15. The FY15 Support and Other Revenue and Disbursements pie charts reflect capital and operational support and expenditures, respectively. Land acquisition expenses for FY15 represented in the Disbursements pie chart include principal, interest and professional fee payments.

CapitaL - otherIn addition to contributions made for specific, immediate needs, do-nations are also gratefully received for general capital expenses, such as stewardship projects (including bridges, parking lots and stormwa-ter work), unspecified or past land acquisition, and ongoing support of the LGLC Center for Conserva-tion (including through the Harvey W. Schadler Memorial Fund). We thank the following for their dona-tions towards these projects.

The LGLC’s Land and Water Society honors a special group of individuals and fami-lies who have made provisions for the LGLC in their estate or financial plans. Those options may include bequests, gifts of life insurance or retirement plans, or other gift planning tools. Planned giving is an opportunity to make a signifi-cant difference in the future of Lake George, whether your life has provided simple means or substantial wealth.

The generous forethought of these Society members is greatly appreciated and recog-nized as a crucial part of the LGLC’s success.

VolunteersThe following volunteers gave of their time during the 2015 calendar year as presenters, field volunteers, preserve stewards, hike leaders, office assistants, fundraisers, and event organizers. They enabled us to run another amazing Hike-A-Thon; kept trails safe for the thousands of hiking guests; took part in national efforts like the Christmas Bird Count; and contributed knowledge and advice as members of our events and conservation committees. These are the unpaid heroes of the LGLC, for whom we are incredibly thankful!

We are exceedingly grateful for the dedication and invalu-able contributions of time and talent from LGLC’s Directors.

The list displayed on this page does not include those who serve on the LGLC Board or Advisory Board unless their volunteer service was for a task outside of regular board-related duties. A complete list of LGLC’s current Board of Directors is on pages 4-5.

The following three volunteers completed their service on the LGLC Board of Directors in 2015 and have moved to the Advisory Board.

Special thanks to Rob Singer for serving as Secretary for 10 years!
