Holland America Line Zaandam Ship Details

STAR Review

Completed in 2000, this cruise liner from Holland America measures 60,906 tons and cancarry 1,440 passengers and a crew of 647.

Her officers are Dutch, and the hotel staff is Filipino and Indonesian. While very similar indesign to the 1999-built Volendam, this one and her sister are slightly larger than the earlierStatendam-class ships.

Public areas show stylish furnishings designed with rich woods, fine fabrics in bold colorsand creative lighting. A musical theme is evident throughout, with a collection of guitars andsaxophones on display, musical notes etched in glass doors, and sheet-music panelsdecorating the rather pallid corridors. Every Holland America ship now features an atriumsculpture. The one on the Zaandam is a big, bulky hunk inspired by a pipe organ. Well-executed reproductions of Ancient Egyptian pectorals, pendants and collars are also on

display. The 557-seat bi-level showroom offers a stylish setting for elaborate productions. In response to popular demand, the line removedsome of the orchestra seating for dancing.

There are plenty of places to socialize onboard, including the Ocean Bar, Explorer's Lounge, Piano Bar and Atrium Terrace. The open planallows a free flow of traffic fore and aft and a way for passengers to see what's going on before settling down. Particularly successful is theCrow's Nest, an observation lounge that triples as a bar with a great view, dance venue and quiet reading lounge. The 217-seat WajangTheater screens films and hosts enrichment lectures including the Culinary Arts for cooking demonstrations and classes for passengers.

Summer afternoon

For breakfast, lunch and dinner, there are multiple choices. The two-level Rotterdam dining room has a double staircase that flanks aplatform on which musicians play during dinner. Diners enjoy a wide-ranging Continental menu under a ceiling of twinkling lights and havethe choice of traditional reserved seating or open seating at dinnertime. Two side sections can be reserved for special family gatherings orsmall groups. Dining choices are fixed early and late sittings on one level, and As You Wishdining between 5:15 and 9 pm on the other. Guests can make reservations or simply showup to be seated.

As an alternative, the Pinnacle Grill seating 88 offers fine steaks and fresh seafood; an extracharge and reservations are required. An informal dinner is also available in the LidoRestaurant, where passengers choose appetizers, soups and salads from the buffet, andwaiters serve a choice of main courses, desserts and beverages. The breakfast and lunchbuffets offer exceptional selections. One complimentary alternate restaurant is Canaletto, with an Italian menu in the evening up on Lido Deck.

The Ocean Spa gym has an over-the-bow view and is attached to the beauty salon. The ClubHAL program divides children ages 5-17 into three groups, though outside of summerholidays, most of the passengers are middle-aged adults. Teenagers have a private Oasis with a dip pool high up and aft on Sky Deck.Attractive deck space includes an outdoor bar and a pool with a deep end that is truly over one's head. The covered promenade deck offerswooden steamer chairs, perfect for a morning read or afternoon nap when the ship is at sea, and a wide wraparound route for seriouswalkers.

Zaandam has 720 cabins, of which 28 are 563-sq-ft private veranda suites with spacious sitting areas, dressing rooms, showers andwhirlpool tubs. The 168 deluxe minisuites also have whirlpools (though not full-size), good stowage, TVs, minibars and refrigerators,curtained-off sitting areas and thinly partitioned verandas. Only 139 are insides. Room service is available 24 hours a day for all meals at nocost. Deluxe Verandah Suites and Penthouse Verandah Suites have access to the Navigation Deck's Neptune Lounge with conciergeservice and periodicals.

The Zaandam is a good, reliable choice for mainstream cruising in attractive surroundings. At this premium level, HAL competes with thelikes of Celebrity and Oceania Cruises and the midsized Princess ships.

Anchorage, Alaska

Overview

Introduction

Anchorage, Alaska, is bigcity living. It is home to more than a quartermillion people—nearlyhalf the state's population. The city has shopping malls, national discount stores, movietheaters, fast-food restaurants, fine dining, high-rise hotels and a busy international airport. That makes Anchorage an anomaly in a state where the featured attraction is wilderness—specifically Denali National Park, the Kenai Peninsula and Katmai National Park. Alaska'sresidents joke that visitors can't really claim to have seen the state until they leave Anchorage.

But, as with most places in Alaska, the wilderness is never far away. The snowcappedChugach Mountains rise just behind the city, and some of the state's premier naturalattractions are within a day's travel. If you visit in summer, you'll have extra time to see thesights—there are 1721 hours of daylight per day then.

Before dashing off to outlying sights such as Denali (pronounced deh-NAH-lee) National Park or the Kenai Peninsula, you should spendsome time in Anchorage itself. With its museums, art galleries, restaurants, parks and trails, flower-filled city center and scenic shoreline, thecity is worth at least a day of sightseeing and possibly more.

You might want to start with a visit to the impressive Anchorage Museum, Resolution Park and the Alaska Public Lands Information Center.Farther away are the must-see Alaska Heritage Museum at Wells Fargo and the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum.

A trolley car leaves from in front of the log-cabin visitor center at Fourth Avenue and F Street hourly 9 am-5 pm for a one-hour tour ofdowntown (about US$20 adults, US$7.50 children ages 6-12). We also recommend a drive south along Turnagain Arm to Girdwood, stopping at the Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary and the numerous scenic overlooks to watch for beluga whales or Dall sheep. For the bestviews, take along a pair of binoculars.

Zoos & Wildlife

Alaska Zoo

The state's only zoo, this small facility houses bears, moose, musk oxen, seals and otherAlaskan wildlife, along with subarctic (cold weather) species, including Amur tigers andBactrian camels. The star attractions are Ahpun the polar bear and Oreo the grizzly bear, whogrew up together and lived in the same enclosure until they began to have roommate issues.Oreo has been placed with Jake, a male Kodiak bear, and Ahpun lives with Lyutyik, a femalepolar bear.

Open May and September daily 9 am-6 pm; June-August daily 9 am-9 pm; November-Februarydaily 10 am-4 pm; March, April and October daily 10 am-5 pm. Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. US$15 adults, US$10seniors and military, US$7 children ages 3-17, free for children age 2 and younger.

Dining

Dining Overview

Anchorage is large enough to offer dining choices well beyond what travelers might expect so far north. You can start the day with sourdoughpancakes in a bustling family restaurant, stop by New Sagaya City Market for a filling Chinese deli lunch, and then relax at a gourmetrestaurant when evening arrives. You'll find restaurants from many Asian cultures (including Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese andChinese), along with Mexican, Italian, Indian and Greek establishments.

Commercial fishing is an important part of Alaska's economy, and fresh seafood is a mainstay at many Anchorage restaurants. The state isfamous for its salmon (especially king and red salmon), which is always wild—not farmraised. Fresh halibut, with its beautiful white meatand delicious flavor, is another favorite from the local waters, as are crabs (notably king crab), oysters and clams. Every chef has a uniqueway of preparing seafood, and some from the Anchorage area have gained national recognition.

A number of Anchorage's most enjoyable restaurants are in the heart of downtown, but others are scattered around this rather spread-outcity. Reaching those in small, midtown strip malls or on the south end of town will require either a car or good knowledge of the busschedule.

General dining times are 7-11 am for breakfast and noon-3 pm for lunch. Driven to extremes by the midnight sun, residents and visitors alikemay find themselves eating dinner as late as 10 pm in the summer months.

Expect to pay within these general guidelines for a dinner for one, not including drinks, tax or tip: $ = less than US$15; $$ = US$15-$25; $$$= US$26-$40; and $$$$ = more than US$40.

See & Do

Sightseeing

Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a cultural buff or a parent seeking family fun, you'll find plenty to do in Vancouver come rain or shine.More than 8 million visitors go there every year. Consider beginning your adventure by taking the glass elevators to the top of HarbourCentre (also known as Vancouver Lookout). From there you can get your bearings—and a breathtaking view of the city at your feet.

Just north of downtown is Vancouver's prized possession: Stanley Park, a last vestige of semiwilderness with more than 1,000 acres/400hectares of woodlands, trails and gardens. Within the park you'll find one of North America's biggest and best public aquariums.

On the opposite side of downtown is Granville Island, now a tourist attraction rivaling Stanley Park. Explore the wonderful covered publicmarket, artisan shops, artists' studios and restaurants.

The Vancouver Art Gallery, located in the center of downtown, features noted Canadian works, as well as top-notch traveling exhibits. TelusWorld of Science, housed in a geodesic dome, offers hands-on exhibits to entertain children. Because Vancouver is a gateway to Asia, be sure to roam the crowded sidewalks of Chinatown and stroll through the Dr. Sun Yat-SenClassical Chinese Garden. Visit neighboring Gastown and its restored Victorianera buildings—though it can seem a bit touristy.

Before you leave Vancouver, make the trip across the Burrard Inlet to the North Shore and one of the city's most popular attractions, theCapilano Suspension Bridge. You can drive over the Lions Gate Bridge or scoot across the harbor via SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay and pickup a taxi or bus from there.

Parks & Gardens

Stanley Park

This park is a cornerstone of Vancouver and is most famous for its 5.5-mi/8.8-km seawall. It is agreat place to stroll, jog, skate, bicycle or people-watch, and you can enjoy views of the sea, mountains and city. You can also try out the 8 mi/13 km of marked, easy- to medium-difficultynature trails that crisscross the park. Free trail maps are available at the information booth nearthe Coal Harbour parking lot off West Georgia Street, just inside the park. The park, about1,000 acres/400 hectares in size, features a miniature railway, petting zoo, totem poles, a waterpark, swimming pool, demonstration salmon stream, four restaurants and the Vancouver Aquarium.

You can also take a horse-drawn-carriage tour of Stanley Park; they leave throughout the day from the information booth inside the park onCoal Harbour.

The park is open 24 hours. Entrance to the park is free. Individual attractions often have fees. Small fee for parking. .

Shopping

You can buy anything in this city, from Cartier jewelry to Haida art. A central shopping center radiates from the intersection of West Georgiaand Granville streets, where the Hudson's Bay department store sits alongside two malls, Pacific Centre and Vancouver Centre. All arelinked by an underground maze of more than 200 shops.

The easiest approach to shopping in Vancouver is by neighborhood. Most shopping areas are within easy walking distance of thedowntown core. If you're looking for authentic First Nations crafts, your best bet is Gastown, east of Canada Place along Water Street. ThePunjabi Market (at 49th and Main streets) and Chinatown (southeast of Gastown) make for interesting shopping with an ethnic flair.

The South Granville neighborhood features art, housewares, stylish gifts and upscale antiques. You can find funkier antiques on Main Streetbetween 16th and 25th avenues, which locals refer to as Antique Row. Another fine neighborhood is Kitsilano: Along West Fourth Avenue,yuppie-oriented stores offer goods ranging from garden knickknacks to CDs, and Commercial Drive between First and Fifth avenues islined with offbeat galleries and more ethnic wares. Metrotown Centre and Oakridge Centre are two large shopping complexes easilyaccessible by SkyTrain.
