Dear Members,

Communicating with you all after 6 months or so is an absolute pleasure. This time period has been extremely lively and the variety of well attended events along with completed projects has been genuinely pleasing.

Summers are around the corner. So are the Sunset Terrace, delicious snacks and a stunning panoramic view to make your evenings worthwhile.

The Main Hall has undergone its first major refurbishment in decades and was inaugurated in style with the first ever Dastangoi event, the lost art of oral storytelling, at Lahore Gymkhana. The Golf Bunker is a work in process and soon you will be enjoying a redesigned, renovated and newly furnished hall.

We are doing our best to improve member experience of club services and really appreciate your support and feedback, along with constantly being in touch with you through multiple forums such as Facebook, Newsletter etc.

The purpose is to not just set the bar, but set it high enough to constantly challenge ourselves. As I have always said, I believe togetherness and teamwork is the key in achieving great things for our club we all consider to be our second home. Wish you all happy playing, eating and mingling at Lahore Gymkhana.

Dear Members, Assalamu Alaikum!

During the tenure of our Committee of Management (COM), Lahore Gymkhana has gone through remarkable changes. Whether it’s the significant improvements in services and facilities or the new developmental work that has given Lahore Gymkhana, our second home, the unique look it always deserved, convenors and their teams have worked exceptionally hard and strive towards perfection on a daily basis.

Over the past 6 months all of the committees have been tremendously active with new additions and improvements, developments in process and exciting events. To mention a few, the Entertainment Committee arranged some absolutely fabulous concerts with Pakistani legends such as Sajjad Ali and internationally renowned artists like Sahara UK gracing the Lahore Gymkhana stage. The Administration made much needed strides in the form of revamping the adored Shoppe, launching an online bill payment system, arranging medical emergency training sessions for employees among many other noteworthy achievements.

We at the Library & Newsletter and Women & Youth committees, also had an eventful period. The Family Carnival was a huge hit, and the sub-clubs such as the Gardening Club, Book Club, Cooking Club etc. continued to hold their innovative events regularly. Now that the Main Hall has been renovated, which having been done after decades looks incredible, we plan on hosting even more events in the future.

It’s safe to say that the team spirit of the COM has been the most essential element when it comes to the marked improvement in the standard of our club. Member participation towards that change is always welcome as well, and we appreciate and act on the valuable feedback provided. Finally, I would like to thank Ms. Fouzia Ahmed (Manager Library) and Hasan Shahzad Qureshi (Creative Consultant) in extending their help and cooperation regarding the publication of the Newsletter.

“Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success.”Over 500 permanent members were present at the esteemed Annual General Meeting held by the Committee of Management (COM). The Chairman, Mr. Kamran Lashari, along with the COM and dedicated senior executives of the club covered a range of topics that were on the agenda including projected revenue, expenditure, future projects etc. Members were also invited to come up to the rostrum to give their valuable suggestions or voice their concerns. The synergy, passion and willingness to make a collaborative effort between members and the COM is a distinct feature of Lahore Gymkhana, and is immensely prevalent at the AGM. These are the key characteristics of our club that contribute towards its betterment and help maintain a reputation throughout the country that is second to none.

There are over 200 Christian employees at Lahore

Gymkhana and celebrating Christmas with them is

one of the most vibrant events of the year. It’s one of

those special occasions that brings everyone togeth-

er in unison and the harmony prevalent is like none

other. A Christmas tree decorated with colorful orna-

ments, Santa Claus or Father Christmas as the gifts

bearer, dancing and singing along to Christmas carols

and to top the everything off, a delicious, intricately

prepared, layered cake made the festivities as enjoy-

able as ever.

Shoppe has been completely revamped and is back under Lahore Gymkhana Management. It’s more organized, spacious and even has a pleasant, outdoor sitting area for around 15 people. What makes it better than ever though is the fact that freshly prepared bakery items are now readily available at Shoppe. Members are also welcome to use the suggestions book placed near the counter.

Secretary Lahore GymkhanaRana Humayun Ihsan took over the charge of the office of Secretary, Lahore Gymkhana. He has for over 17 years served Quaid-e-Azam University, National University of Sciences and Technology, National College of Arts, Cadet College Hasanabdal, Institute of Cost and Management Accounts of Pakistan, Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, Federal College of Education and Pakistan Institute of Development Economics. Mr. Ihsan has been General Manager (HR & Admin.) in KSA as well. He is pursuing a PhD in HRM from Malaysia and holds MA English from NUML, MBA from APCOMS, MA Education from PU and LLB from BLU. He also has certifications from the University of Nottingham, UK to his credit.As Chief Executive Officer of the Club, he is confident to leave no stone unturned vis-à-vis all professional benchmarks, traditions of the Club, especially serving each esteemed member to his/her viable satisfaction, sans any discrimination whatsoever.

With over 2000 tickets sold, this was surely the most successful Grand Tombola in the history of Gymkhana. Being one of the stalwart events of the club that people all over the city look forward to, it certainly lived up to expectations. The Rear Lawn was absolutely packed!

26th January, 2019“Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand.”In recent memory, this was by far the liveliest, most spirited and effervescent concert held at Lahore Gymkhana. Nirmal Roy, a Coke Studio sensation with amazingly strong vocals, sang hits that have developed into anthems for Pakistan’s youth, courtesy Pakistan’s most popular music platform. She had the energetic crowd moving and singing along to all her songs. Then came on stage one of the frontrunners of Punjabi or Bhangra music, Sahara UK. With their mega hit songs known throughout the world, such as ‘Laal Ghagra’ and ‘Billo Hai’, they had the audience on its feet and in absolute raptures. Just when it seemed the night had peaked, to make things even better they paid tribute to Pakistani singers with their renditions of popular Pakistani songs. For every member present, this was surely one of the most unforgettable nights ever spent at the prestigious club we now know as a second home.

8th September, 2018“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.”Sara Raza, a Pakistani singer whose talent defies her young age. In her career she has already been on many popular music shows like Coke Studio in Pakistan, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge in India etc. She actually won the Pakistani reality show Bright Star and has also won a HUM award for Best Soundtrack. A performer with so many accolades graced the Gymkhana stage and unquestionably made it her own. The Main Hall was absolutely full of members of all ages wanting to catch a glimpse of and enjoy the undeniable talent on display. Even the Chairman got in on the act and performed a bit with Sara Raza. With songs from multiple genres, an energetic crowd shouting out or jotting down requests throughout the night and an overall atmosphere which you had to be there to believe, this was surely one of the best Farshi Mehfils ever at Gymkhana.

“Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to imagination and life to everything.”

The ‘Master of Melody’ Sajjad Ali graced the Lahore Gymkhana stage for the first time ever in his long, illustrious career. Witnessing the timeless Pakistani music icon live in concert was truly a moment of bliss for members of all ages, including families and groups of lively youngsters who had filled up our one of a kind, picturesque Rear Lawn despite the misty, chilly weather. Sajjad Ali is one of the very few singers who can electrify any crowd, regardless of age, gender etc. Exhilarating performances of his legendary tunes from the 80’s & 90’s along with contemporary hits from the 2000’s & 2010’s had everyone in raptures. Thanks to the admirable Entertainment Committee and Gymkhana Management, Lahore Gymkhana is surely one of the best places around for concerts, especially considering the breathtaking ambience and family friendly atmosphere.

24th November, 2018“There’s nothing better than live music. It’s raw energy, and raw energy feeds the soul.”Concert season in full swing at Gymkhana! An unforgettable night for the hundreds of members, both young and old, friends and families, who attended. So many factors contributed towards the incredible atmosphere. Our exquisite Rear Lawn, the splendid November weather and the lively crowd to name a few. Fadia Shaboroz entertained with some popular songs and put on a great show, before the musical powerhouse, Sahir Ali Bagga, took over and gave everyone a night to remember with his super-hit songs, especially from Coke Studio.

• Statutory audit of financial statements by external auditors• The 2018 Annual Report, of a significantly higher quality compared to previous reports, was distributed to permanent members.• After the recognition of the Employees Provident Fund by the Federal Board of Revenue, it was deemed necessary to have a new computer based accounting system, which after a successful development phase, is now in operation. • Online bill payment by members through a mobile application.• Insurance of club assets and group life insurance for employees have been renewed. Employees who are covered under group health insurance are facilitated by the Finance department. This facility is extended to reimburse OPD expenses, assisting in hospitalization and coordination with the insurance company.

After recovery of Rs. 10 million, from an investment in Cres Standard Investment Bank Limited (CSIBL), the Finance team with the help and guidance of legal advisors, has been regularly and thoroughly following up to recover the remaining balance of Rs. 6 million. This is expected to be completed soon.

“Food is our common ground, a universal experience.”Surely among Lahore Gymkhana’s most renowned and sought after events, the Sunday Brunch is always an extraordinary experience. The turnout of around 400 people, full of friends and families, came and enjoyed the exquisite beauty of the Rear Lawn coupled with an elaborate, tantalizing menu with something for everyone! To make things even better, there was live music by Police, a popular instrumental band, to complement the festivities with their beautiful tunes.

“Eat, drink and be merry!”The exceptional Christmas cake, laden with raisins and nuts, was meticulously prepared by the F&B department for the Christian staff members. Everyone who got the opportunity to taste the sumptuous desert, loved it to the core!

The foremost positive aspect of this championship is that the top golf professionals of the country are eligible to participate. The championship is given total support by the Zaman family, who ensure that it is held in a way that J.A. Zaman, an icon of excellence, would have liked. All the ingredients of the championship including the players, the golf course, the arrangements and the quality of competition are remarkable. The winner this year was Shabbir Iqbal, the pride of Pakistan in the golfing arena.

35th Governor's Cup Golf Tournament

A look at the history of this gracious and affable event takes us back to the year 1984 when the first Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament was held, based on a recommendation by the then President of Pakistan. While praise is due to Gymkhana Management for a successful continuity, a salute also has to be given to Sikandar Mustafa Khan, Chairman of the the sponsor, Millat Group, and a history making club member. His generous backing has ensured that the championship attains a permanent place for itself in the golfing arenas of Pakistan. No doubt, the Governor’s Cup has become a championship that carries prestige, status, esteem and the ultimate winner manages to builf his status as an outstanding golfer. This year the champion turned out to be Sardar Murad Khan, a former captain of the Golf Club. His success is attributable to excellent application of golfing skills and considerable tenacity.

• Facilities at the Driving Range have been substantially upgraded. This includes new mats, partitions and trays for balls. There are also new tiles that are porcelain, with a matte finish and are non-slip. Furthermore, there are new lights and sitting benches which are exquisite and elegant.• 28 cctv network cameras are in place at the Golf Clubhouse.• An ice cube machine with a capacity of 195 kg has been acquired.• In the basement an iron bar grill now protects the golf carts.• Induction of qualified technical staff. Muhammed Usman Tanveer as Course Maintenance Supervisor and Muhammed Naveed as Machinery Supervisor. Muhammed Usman Tanveer is a Masters in Horticulture from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad and Muhammed Naveed holds a technical diploma from the famous Punjab Polytechnic Institute, Lahore. They represent appropriate and handy additions and with their technical expertise have started to add value.• New brick lined paths have been completed near various holes. This facilitates the golfers who use carts and completely eliminates the dust particles that disturbed and irked golfers.• With the procurement of two fairway cutters, the golf course enters an era of modernized fairway maintenance. The previous method of cutting fairways was rather outdated and resulted in mediocre and disheveled cutting. Henceforth, the fairways will start giving an admirable and breathtaking look.

Developmentsin processA fairway verticutter will be used during April 2019 to improve grass condition. The damaged tees will be rehabilitated.A grass nursery is being established near the driving range in a space of 50 yards by 50 yards. Two qualities of grass will be nursed, Fine Dacca and Tiway 419.Spirited and vitality loaded initiatives have yielded all round improvements in and around the golf course. The Golf Council will continue to reflect verve in its efforts, and zest for enhancing facilities will be amply visible.

Ground breaking CeremonyA ground breaking ceremony was held to launch the construction of 21 additional guest rooms. Completion of this project will require approximately 11 months. This momentous event heralds another feather in the cap for the incumbent COM. Chairman Lahore Gymkhana, Mr. Kamran Lashari, accompanied by Convenor Guest Rooms, Dr. Ali Razaque, along with senior members of the COM and veteran members of Lahore Gymkhana graced the memorable occasion.

Developmentsin processA dishwasher is being procured to ensure speedy and hygienic cleaning of dishes.The cutlery and chinaware require replacement as they have become obsolete and dilapidated. An assortment of newly designed cutlery and crockery embossed with the Gymkhana logo is being procured which will accentuate the prestige of Guest Rooms, reflecting the elite standards envisioned.Bed mattresses are being procured as the old ones have outlived their utility, being in use since 2011.

A pilot project of order taking by waiters ensuring accuracy, speed and zero error.As part of our cost cutting drive, continuous efforts are being made to ensure no compromise on quality vis a vis wasteful expenses.To add diversity to our menus, we continue to break the monotony with the addition of a mélange of new dishes for our guests to savour.Improvements in the standard of cable services by shifting to digital boxes.

“Today’s little moments become tomorrow’s precious memories.”If you asked Lahore Gymkhana members what separates it from all the other clubs in the city, or even country, they would surely mention the Family Carnival as one of the key elements that does. Events like these make us call our prestigious club a “Second Home”. From innovative stalls offering food, clothes and jewelry, to unique attractions from the Walled City, to several fun games and a play area for kids, to entertaining live performances, the carnival truly had it all! The perfect day out for families, to cherish their time together and make some great memories.

“People with mental health conditions deserve just as much support and compassion as people with physical health conditions.”Renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Saad Bashir, enlightened members of Gymkhana with an absolutely phenomenal talk on mental health. Events like these are key to ensure mental health awareness in a country where people find it hard to stand up against the stigma associated with it. There surely is no health without mental health. The session was extremely interactive throughout. The turnout was also magnanimous. Even though extra seats were arranged, lots of members ended up having to stand. Dr. Saad brought up many important points, some of which were how religious experiences affect people psychologically, how physical and psychological fitness are interlinked, meditation being the best remedy etc. He also talked about addiction in today’s generation. Not just drugs but addiction to technology as well. He mentioned that we need to revive the family culture our predecessors used to follow and that elders need to learn how to talk to and deal with teenagers without dictating too much. Developing relationships with children is how they will have more faith in you than fear.

12th January, 2019“That’s what storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again.”Around 30 kids divided into 2 categories, ages 5-8 and 9-12, participated in the Storytelling Contest by Gymkhana Kids Club. All the children did exceptionally well and were at their creative best. From dressing up as their favorite characters to acting out their stories with wonderful expressions to mentioning lessons and morals, each child was exuding confidence and fantastic imagination, making their parents proud. Prizes and goodies were awarded to every participant at the end of the contest, and 8 year old Pakistani patriot, Ibrahim Tariq, along with 9 year old creative genius, Fatima Ahmed, won in their respective categories and took home trophies.

29th December, 2018 Lead Music Club members, Saad Ibrahim & Aneeq Asif, along with Gymkhana Talent Hunt 2018 runner-up, Rafay Ali Khan, were given the opportunity of a lifetime as opening acts for the legendary Sajjad Ali. It’s safe to say they took full advantage of it and the crowd enjoyed every bit of their performances. Our very own young, talented musicians and singers are like a breath of fresh air and Lahore Gymkhana will continue to promote young talent by constantly giving them chances to perform in front of a huge audience.

8th September, 2018The winner of the Gymkhana Talent Hunt, Sana Ahmed Rauf, and the runner-up, Rafay Ali Khan, were given a fantastic opportunity to perform as opening acts for one of the crown jewels of the Pakistani music industry, Sara Raza, at the Farshi Mehfil. Each of them sang two beautiful songs, and it’s safe to say that both of our amazingly talented Music Club members took full advantage of the chance given to them.

7th February, 2019For the first time ever, the Gymkhana Music Club had a representative at the annual prize distribution ceremony for the prestigious fitness competition and table tennis tournament. Shams Qaiser, who reached the top 10 of the 2018 Gymkhana Talent Hunt, had the opportunity to entertain in an entirely new setting with members that did not know what to expect. However, with his melodious voice he put to rest all doubts and won over the whole audience, who were highly appreciative of his performance. There was another stellar display of music by youngsters from the Roots Millennium School Music Society, who thankfully agreed to collaborate with Gymkhana Music Club for this event.

Asif Malik Memorial Tournament (Gobi’s Cup)Held on 9th November, this was between a team of seniors led by Mr. Riffat Rana and juniors lead by Mr. Moamar Rana. It was sponsored by Mr. Umar Asif Malik, a gesture that was highly appreciated by the management and members of the Billiard Room. The seniors, with their valuable experience, ended up winning the event.

The prestigious Lahore Gymkhana Cricket Club hosted the national cricket team of the Maldives, adding to the already illustrious history of the oldest cricket club in Pakistan. To the surprise of many, the Maldives lost by a mere 9 runs in a closely contested game, despite cricket being played there on a much smaller scale. Quaid Khan, one of Gymkhana’s best players in recent times, was once again instrumental in his team’s win. After the match, as a symbol of gratitude, presents were distributed among the Maldives players and officials by Chairman, Kamran Lashari and Convenor Administration, Dr. Jawad Sajid.

4th Hassan Tariq Rahim Masters TournamentThe lead sponsors of the event included The Bank of Punjab, Service Sales Corporation, Service Tyres, Associated Group and Gobi Paints. Support sponsors were M/S Seasons Canola, Bahria Housing, System Ltd, Naiza Brand, Newage Cables, Coke and Nestle. Without their generous support organizing such a huge tournament would not have been possible. The branding around the courts particularly made the event look aesthetically attractive.Estimated footfall during the week was around 10,000 and most of the print and electronic media covered it, while wholeheartedly appreciating the amazing effort of the Gymkhana Management in arranging the popular tournament. Mr. Aisam Ul Haq while giving an interview after winning the doubles final termed the tournament as the best he has played during the last 20 years in Pakistan and suggested that the Pakistan Tennis Federation should also organize similar events in the future. Mr. Aqeel Khan, the number 1 ranked player in Pakistan, also suggested the same to promote the sport on a national level. To further show his gratitude to Gymkhana for arranging one of the best tournaments he has ever played, he dedicated one of the trophies he won to Lahore Gymkhana Tennis Club.

Annual Swimming GalaHeld on 30th September, the event was highly competitive and followed by a beautiful prize distribution ceremony that took place on 16th October, with food and festivities for all the families in attendance.ResultsBest Swimmer- Boys: Azlan Khan (R11353) Girls: Maira Saad Mughal (P7383)

Winter Squash Tournament 2018The annual Winter Squash Tournament 2018 was held in November/December, with the final being played between Faisal Nisar and Salman Warraich. Salman won the final, edging out Faisal. Convenor Squash, Mr. Sami Ur Rehman, distributed prizes among all the talented participating players.
