Bradley A golf aficionado who spends most of his time on the greens and watching the game, even when he is not working. Nonetheless, his family does not take second place to the game as he also enjoys exploring new eating places with them.

Patrick A sports and lifestyle management executive with over 25 years of experience, during which he has managed 60 high-end clubs across 30 countries and 5 continents. His career highlights include 9 years with IMG where he worked for Tiger Woods, and his appointment as Vice President of Sports & Golf for Dubai Event Management Corporation by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed.

Alyssa An accidental marketer who relates the life of a marketer to being an alcoholic - craving the madness of deadlines only to indulge all over again when the high subsides. Thankfully, the arrival of a little one taught her the importance of work life balance.

Lionel A veteran of the hospitality scene who was also a finalist for “F&B Personality of the Year” Award in 2004/05 and “Most Innovative F&B Personality” Regional Award in the Hospitality Asia Platinum Award 2008.

Nick A globetrotter who has lived and worked in Canada, USA, China and Taiwan. Nick possesses invaluable experience after working at top clubs such as The Country Club in Brookline and The Royal Montreal Golf Club.

Leo A closet heavy metal fan who gets a charge out of taking a trip on the wild side, usually behind a set of drums. During his free time, Leo takes joy in blogging and synthesising “would be” songs in his little black book.

Mave An ardent self-learner with a burning passion for visual arts. A photography enthusiast who enjoys taking shots of everything from food to humans, Mave believes everything can look good through the camera lens.

Maggie A resident Mongolian in Laguna, Maggie started off as a golf tour organiser in China and has always loved the thrills and spills of golf since. Today, Maggie plays the important role of “Club Ambassador”, the bridge between Members and staff.

I would like to start off by thanking our members of Laguna National for the kind Ang Pow contribution which was distributed evenly to the whole team here at Laguna National. This was greatly appreciated.

Many of you were understandably concerned about the future of Laguna National in light of the recent release of the White Paper in January. While we will discuss this issue in detail in a forthcoming article titled “A Secure Future With Laguna National”, I am delighted to inform you that we have secured Laguna’s future until 2040.

We are also proud to announce the signing of a new Affiliated Partner - ONE°15 Marina Club located at Sentosa Island bringing you even more benefits as a Laguna Member. More information can be found in the

ONE°15 Marina feature under the Travel section and our Membership department will be happy to assist you with any enquiries.

On the Social & Recreational facilities, we have listened closely to your feedback and upgraded our gym with new Star Trac® equipment to enhance your workout. For further enquiries on this and other activities, please speak to our team at the Social and Recreation Department.

As always, we have a line-up of events planned for the second quarter in 2013 which you can look out for under our Calendar of Events in the section “Happenings”. Do mark them down in your calendars and sign up through the respective departments.

I would like to congratulate the teams whom have been selected to represent Laguna National at the 2013 SGA League Games.

Laguna National would like to extend special thanks to all of the golfers who have undergone the arduous process during the past few months.

Finally, we note that The Straits Times published an inaccurate report of Laguna National’s Membership pricing on 3 February. The report stated that a Laguna National Membership costs $39,000 but the correct pricing is in fact $150,000. We swiftly informed The Straits Times of the mistake and the correct pricing was subsequently published on 7 February. We would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that the Management is always looking after the best interests of all our Members and protecting the value of your Membership is of utmost importance to us.

Amid the uncertainty of the future of golf courses after the release of the Population White Paper comes heartening news – knowing that the future of Laguna Members is the most secure in Singapore.

On 31 January the media reported that some golf courses will not have their leases extended due to the land use plan for Singapore’s projected population of 6.9 million by 2030. With this, anyone looking to join a club will also have to consider the value proposition that is the value of the membership against the term of the lease.

Laguna National is the only golf club to have secured an extension of 30 years through to 2040 as a result of our relentless pursuit of a long-term lease for our Members. As announced in Q4 2012, Laguna National’s land lease extension was approved and that means exclusive privileges for Laguna Members until 2040. The land lease renewal was made possible with the support of Laguna Members during the initial offering of Membership extensions in August 2012. Laguna National achieved the goal for the offering with the overwhelmingly positive response from Laguna Members leading to the decision to renew the lease. While the extension program is officially closed at present, the Management continues to evaluate the situation and

will keep options open in this aspect. Existing Members of Laguna National will, of course, always be given preferential consideration for the new 2040 Membership program on offer.

While we look towards an exciting future, we are also making efforts to ensure that Membership with Laguna National continues to be exclusive. Prospective Laguna Members are interviewed before their entry into the Member base to determine whether they are the right fit for the Laguna family. Prices for Membership will also be constantly evaluated and increased depending on the take-up rate, boosting the value of the Membership.

Furthermore, a secured future brings with it more reasons to continue improving our facilities and services for the benefit of Laguna Members. Whatever the outcome of the Population White Paper, we can be sure that Laguna remains an excellent choice for your sporting and recreational future.

From 7 to 9 June, professional golfers from Singapore and Malaysia will go head to head in a tournament on the World Classic Course at Laguna National. The team match play format will be familiar to anyone who has followed the Ryder Cup. The likes of Lam Chih Bing and Mardan Mamat will take on Malaysian golf professionals in what is expected to be a charged up atmosphere, a hallmark of Causeway matches.

Players will include top performers from the local Order of Merit in 2012 and this year’s local Order of Merit which will be derived from the SPGA Professional events, also held at Laguna National. Spots will also be given to Singapore Permanent Residents and potentially Singapore-based golfers.

In line with Laguna National’s objective of supporting the local golfing scene, the Causeway Trophy 2013 will also give up-and-coming professionals like Choo Tze Huang, Koh Deng Shan, Mitchell Slorach and Lam Zhiqun the opportunity to shine and showcase their talents.

The Causeway Trophy 2013 will be held at Laguna National for the first three years and will showcase the unique features of the World Classic Course. Subsequent tournaments are planned to be held in Malaysia with a suitable counterpart of Laguna National.

Increasingly known as “Asia’s Toughest Test”, the World Classic makes for an exciting match play event. Risk and reward decisions are required at every turn for golfers, which encourages a strategic battle between individual golfers and competing teams. Golfers will have to weigh the risks when going for a pin, as any miscalculation will quickly result in a lost hole.

It is yet to be seen if the team captains will dictate the pairings for their teams or allow the players to determine their preferred partners. Lip Ooi, Team Captain Singapore PGA plans to go with both options: consult the players to see with whom they are comfortable partnering and formulate the pairing possibilities based on each individual’s strengths and current form.

You might have already read it in the news, but an event that is the first of its kind happening right here at Laguna National is worth repeating. We are talking about the Causeway Trophy 2013 at Laguna National.

The Causeway rivalry has always contributed to interesting topics over coffee between Singaporeans and Malaysians. Let us take a look at some of the popular topics that are often debated upon:

• The Laksa, Bak Kut Teh, Hainanese Chicken Rice and Yu Sheng place of origin dispute. Are these delicacies from Singapore or Malaysia?

• The classic Malaysia Cup battles. After winning the Cup 24 times, Singapore withdrew from the competition after their last win in 1994, following a dispute with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) over gate receipts.

• Manglish or Singlish? Singapore has always laid claim on the infamous language that combines English, Mandarin, dialect and Malay terms. But with both countries having akin cultures and roots, it is almost impossible to decree the ownership of this unique language.

• AFF Suzuki Cup 2012. After all the excitement from the 1990s Malaysia Cup died down, we would have thought that no other football match would ever achieve the same amount of national pride, and we were wrong.

Just like how the AFF Suzuki Cup revived the national spirit from both sides, we can be certain that the Causeway Trophy at Laguna National would spark off this Causeway debate once again, soon!

‘I train a lot on the World Classic course. Its challenging bunkers and greens allow me to practise the many different shots I may face on tour.‘

Scott Barr had his best year in 2012, making 18 out of 25 cuts on the Asian Tour. The 41-year-old Australian Touring Pro was close to winning his first-ever Asian Tour event at the SAIL-SBI Open held in New Delhi. He finished in third place after a final round 71 left him at 13-under for the tournament and just one stroke out of the playoff.

The Singapore-based veteran has also capped his amazing 2012 season with more accolades, ranking third place with most Eagles and fourth place for most Birdies.

In terms of earnings, Scott Barr has achieved a total earning of US$201,439, finishing in 21st place on the Order of Merit. At the last Barclays Singapore Open, he received his biggest paycheck when he finished in 41st place, with a prize earning of US$33,000.

‘Many Members have asked me for tips on improving their game. The key is - foundation. The less bad habits you have on the course, the better your game will be. That is why I always encourage golfers to get proper coaching and practise often.’

Like Scott Barr, Zaw Moe has also secured his tour card favourably for 2013. Last year, the 46-year-old Myanmar veteran had a solid run which lifted him from outside the top-100 to his current 52nd position on the Order of Merit with total winnings of US$72,400.

‘The Club has always shown great support for the Touring Pros. Thanks to them, I can train regularly on both the Masters and World Classic courses. The World Classic course, in particular, is an excellent training ground due to its many challenges.’

Zaw Moe started strong in the beginning of 2012, finishing in 23rd place at the Avantha Masters, India’s one and only European Tour Event. He also managed to secure a top-10 finish at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters which was held at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Due to his injuries, Zaw Moe was kept out of action for most of the second half of 2012. However, even with the lack of tournament participation, Zaw Moe was still able to achieve great results; leading the tour in Eagles in 2012.

‘The Asian Tour has allowed me to do what I love and I believe 2013 will be my best year yet.’

To paraphrase the old saying: “A family who golfs together, stays together”. For Member Jeffry Ho, this is particularly true. Jeffry has been a Member of Laguna National since February 1997. He attributes his attainment of an ideal family life to choosing Laguna National as the preferred venue for quality family time.

MEMBER’S INTERVIEW: FAMILY TIES

Jeffry is blessed with a very sporty family indeed. Being an avid golfer himself, both his sons are also regular golfers, with Johnathan playing for the school team. His daughter, Magdalene, is with her school’s track and field team and although she does golf, she prefers to train at the gym or swim.

“My family and I visit the Club very often, especially my two sons, Johnathan and Amos who are enrolled in the Laguna Junior Golf Programme. A typical family weekend would be me playing golf with my kakis, with Johnathan joining in occasionally. Amos often practices his swing at the driving range. Magdalene loves the swimming pool and my wife, Sook Mei, loves the spa. When everybody is done with their activity, we would then meet and sit down together for dinner at the Clubhouse.

“I must say that I am glad to have such active children. It definitely beats playing video games all day.”

In recent years, Johnathan has blossomed into quite the golfer. Under the watchful guidance of Laguna Golf Pro Allen Kelly, Johnathan has been improving his game, gaining experience at various tournaments, including a recent outing to Bintan. This year, both Johnathan and Jeffry have qualified for the SPGA league, creating the possibility of a father-son pairing.

“I am very proud of what Johnathan has achieved in golf. I must say, a lot of the credit goes to Allen. He is a terrific coach and mentor, not only with Johnathan, but also with the younger kids in the Junior Golf Programme. Some people asked me how it feels to be playing with my son in the same tournament. Well, it is definitely a very interesting experience and one I look forward to. I mean, how many Dads have the same opportunity as me?”

Both father and son enjoy playing at both the Masters Course and the World Classic Course. The Masters Course is great for its superb greens, while the World Classic is the perfect training ground, with its interesting terrain and daunting shots.

“I have played at many different Clubs, and I must say the green on the Masters Course is one of the best in Singapore. Both my sons and I love playing at Laguna National.

“Of course, good golf courses are not the only reason why we like to play here, the delectable spread at Enmaru is another draw for us! It is definitely a good way to pamper ourselves after a long day of golf, exercising and spa.”

It is not surprising then that the man known as “The Great White Shark” took a much larger role with the company after he was commissioned to re-design the Pacific Links Makaha Golf Club West Course in Hawaii. After getting to know Du Sha, Chairman of Pacific Links, and upon learning the company’s innovative, reciprocal - play and cluster approach, Norman was so intrigued by the company that he became an ambassador for Pacific Links, helping to raise the company’s profile with public appearances and as an advisor.

“I was very impressed by the solid fundamentals of Pacific Links and the relationship began to evolve,” said the member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

“Pacific Links is taking a very creative approach to their business.

Importance Of Cholesterol In The BodyCholesterol is an important component of the cell membranes. It is used by our body as a raw material to help with the healing process and often elevates as part of a protective immune system response to chronic infection.

Cholesterol is found in large amounts in the brain tissue where it is needed for normal brain function and vital for proper nerve function. Research has shown that cholesterol in eggs is helpful for the elderly whose memory is declining. That being said, infants need plenty of cholesterol for proper brain development and cholesterol is normally found in large amounts in human breast milk.

Adrenal and gonadal hormones are made from cholesterol. These hormones are responsible for managing stress, energy production and reproduction purposes. Cholesterol is needed in large amounts in the skin as it is vital for optimum skin health and strength. Vitamin D is made from cholesterol in the skin!

What Happens When It Is Too MuchOur body uses cholesterol to form cell membranes, create hormones, as well as perform several other crucial maintenance operations. But a high level of cholesterol in the blood plays a major role in the development of atherosclerosis, or hardening and narrowing of the arteries, which in turn raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.

When doctors talk about high cholesterol, they do not mean the amount of cholesterol a person gets from food, but rather how much of the substance is circulating in the blood.

There are two factions of specialised sherpas called “lipoproteins” that are moving cholesterol within our bodies, according to their own specialised agendas. There are several kinds but the ones to focus on are the Jekyll and Hyde of health, HDL (High-Density Or ‘Helpful’ Lipoprotein) and LDL (Low-Density Or ‘Lazy’ Lipoprotein) cholesterol.

The Good Guy: HDL CholesterolAbout one-fourth to one-third of blood cholesterol is carried by high-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL cholesterol is known as “good” cholesterol, because high levels of HDL seem to protect against heart attack. Low levels of HDL (less than 40 mg/dL) also increase the risk of heart disease. Medical experts think that HDL tends to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it is passed from the body. Some experts believe that HDL removes excess cholesterol from arterial plaque, slowing its buildup.

The Bad Guy: LDL CholesterolLDL simply deposits cholesterol in the most convenient place it can find, in this case, your arteries. When too much LDL cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. This condition is known as Atherosclerosis where a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, resulting in a heart attack or stroke.

Improve Your Cholesterol Without MedicationAs part of a preventive measure to lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, make these simple lifestyle changes which can help improve your cholesterol level and overall health:• Indulge in a heart-healthy diet which is rich in

But before you unleash on the next bumbling waiter or clueless salesclerk, hear the words of RON KAUFMAN, a global service consultant who has been on a 20-year crusade to improve service standards in Singapore. Here he tells Monica Pitrelli that getting good service in Singapore is not only possible – it’s easy – as long as you check your attitude at the door.

How did an American from Connecticut end up in the service industry in Singapore? Twenty-two years ago, Singapore was going through yet another economic shift – low-cost processing and back-office work were moving to China, India and other locations. The government could see that the future in Singapore was going to be in services: research and development, education, hospitality, conventions, medical, finance, legal – they’re all services.

But the education system was designed to produce people who were “do it right the first time”, no-defect types. The struggle was how to turn a population geared around not making mistakes into people who are ready to respond to requests that nobody has ever made before. Because that is what customers do. So the National Productivity Board and Singapore Airlines created a joint venture to raise service standards, and I was one of the people that they brought in for a week. It’s been a long week. (laughs)

Which industries have you worked with? I’ve worked with everybody – consumer goods, retail, hospitality, manufacturing, telecommunications, hardware, software, banking. Everybody.

How has service in Singapore changed in the past twenty years? In terms of speed, efficiency, choice, options and accuracy, the quality of service has skyrocketed. This is one of the most efficient places on the planet.

Yet, everyone is still complaining. Is there something about the culture that makes adopting a service mentality difficult? From the early days, the school system has been testing people to see who was going to get to the next level. The pressure is always on. Anybody with kids in school here will tell you it’s pretty intense. What that produces is a culture where the last thing you want to do is make a mistake.

And, there is an old mindset that asks, “Why should I? What’s in it for me? If he gets more, I lose.” Plus, there is an attitude here that if you are in customer service you are subservient – service means that you are servile – which is crazy.

Where does Singapore excel, and where does it falter? Singapore is good at making operational improvements, like opening up two new branches or extending service hours. But the spirit, the attitude – the warmth and personality – that part has not been as easy to improve. When you are face-to-face with someone, and you have a question that isn’t in the script – that’s where the personality side pops up. And, that’s the transition that Singapore is in right now.

How do you go about shifting a personality trait in a populace? Seems like a tall order. The task is to educate a population to be responsive to new ideas and requests. We need to change the old way of thinking, which asks, “What’s my checklist?” and “What’s my procedure?” to the new way which questions: “Why do I have this procedure?” and “What’s the purpose of it?”

Are you seeing improvements? Yes. The old fearful style is melting away as people become willing to take a risk. “What’s in it for me?” is gradually transforming to “What can I do for you?”

How did Singapore Airlines get it so right? Those with exposure to cosmopolitan clients get it. That’s why Singapore Airlines got it from the very beginning. From Day One, they were landing in foreign airports and carrying passengers from all over the world, so they rose to global standards to make Singapore stand out.

What’s your personal view on service here? Here you have an ang moh (points to self) going, “This is great! Look at all the improvement. We have to tell the rest of the world!” But Singaporeans and expats are grumbling. Service has dramatically improved over the 22 years that I have been here. But there is still room to grow. Once, I was teaching a class and we were discussing the leapfrog that Hong Kong has done in their service sector in recent years. A Singaporean student asked, “What did their government do?” I said, “Wrong question!” Today, it’s not the government’s job to fix the situation. It’s our job. And by our, I mean every person who lives, works, plays in and visits this country has a role to play in uplifting the service experience.

So you believe that customers play a big role in the quality of service that they receive? Service is always a two-way street. As a customer, if you engage with the person who is serving you in an uplifting way, you are going to get more uplifting service back. And for an expat (shakes head), it’s so easy. It is so easy. Just start out by saying, “Hi, can I have your name please… Oh, hi Siow Wee, thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it.” How many people do you think say that to Siow Wee each day?

Zero. Nobody. So you stand out, right? And, there are going to be language issues. Just ask the person to please slow down rather responding angrily with, “What’d you say?”

I hear that tone a lot. So I’m guessing you don’t subscribe to the squeaky wheel gets the oil mantra. For service providers, squeaky wheels are a huge opportunity. Squeaky wheels have made the choice to bring a problem to you rather than go to TripAdvisor, Yelp, Facebook or Twitter and hammer your reputation. This guy is telling you straight versus all the others who walk away and tell others instead.

The person who is the squeaky wheel has two choices. You can bang on the table and yell – and that can work sometimes – but nobody is going to respond to you out of a desire in their heart. Another option is to say, “Hi, I’m a loyal customer. My name is Ron, and I’ve got this problem, and I’m really hoping you can help me.” If these two customers come to you with the same problem, who are you going to help?

Number Two. Right. The service provider decides who gets the upgrade, the discount and the freebie. You want to be that customer. So be appreciative even when you have a complaint.

Do you believe that the expats’ dissatisfaction with service levels here is related to expectations that we bring from home? The “this would never happen at home” attitude? I think a fundamental adaption needs to occur. It’s not so much a lowering of standards as it is a raising of the willingness to contribute to that service interaction. An expat has huge social power to bring to the interaction.

What about when “good service” falls flat due to cultural differences? For example, it drives a lot of expat women crazy to be followed around retail clothing stores. Imagine you are that retail assistant and your boss told you to do that. You think the thing to do is what your boss told you. If you understood that some cultures like space, you’d recognise that the proper action would be to back off. That requires the service provider to understand what the other person values. That wasn’t the way that the educational system worked here; it asked “Do you know the answer?” and “Did you do the right thing?”

So, the key is to drop the one-size-fits-all approach? Yes, it’s about listening to what someone else values. Take a restaurant – some people will come in with a client, and they want a quiet corner; others are tourists, and they want to be right in the middle of it. Some people have kids and need a lot of attention; others are on a date and want to be left alone. Some people want to nurse a cup of coffee for an hour before

their next appointment; others are in a rush and want their bill before the meal is finished. We just went through

six different scenarios, each requiring different actions. How are you going to train people for that? There’s no script anymore. So the whole idea is to educate rather than train.

I can’t imagine how many stories and complaints you must hear. Is it helpful or harmful for people to recount their experiences? First, my response to the grumbling is always constructive. I can’t hear a complaint without understanding what could, should and can still happen. Then I think about the difference between whingeing and complaining. When you whinge about something, you don’t want it to be fixed, you just want to talk. When you complain, you’re calling for action.

How do you advise dealing with angry customers?

There is a phrase that I use: “Make the customer feel right without making yourself

wrong.” I’ll give you an example – tell me something that you complain to your husband about that relates to him.

Service SnafusRon’s advice on common service complaints:

No StockSituation: You have finally located the exact end table, recipe ingredient or pair of turquoise shoes that you need, only to be told point-blankly “No stock”.

Response: When you see something you like and you buy it, be delighted. And when you miss it, that’s life. Recognise that the person with whom you are upset is not the importer. Ask if they can order the product for you. If you are willing to wait, say so. Then ask to be passed to the manager. But getting upset is not going to make you happy or get you the product.

When “No” Means “I Don’t Know”

Situation: You are in the home goods department at Takashimaya, and you ask a salesperson if the store carries kettles. “No,” she replies. You find a selection of 50 kettles two rows away.

Response: Find the product and go back to that salesperson and say, “Hi, Mary Sue. I just wanted to let you know I found the kettles. They’re over here in case somebody asks again.” Mary Sue took the safe route, and you found her to be wrong. Build her self-esteem and encourage her, so the next time she does better. And if some expat does that, the next time, you’ll be the beneficiary.

His messiness around the house. Yeah, I got it. (laughs) If your husband says, “No, it wasn’t me” or “C’mon – get off it”, that doesn’t help. But if he says, “You know, you’ve got a point. Keeping a clean house really makes it much nicer for the both of us,” there’s no fight anymore. He made you feel right without making himself wrong by admitting, “You’re right – I’m a slob.”

Usually when someone throws you a complaint, the emotional reaction is to fight back. But I tell people to exercise compassion, which doesn’t always come naturally. But the key is that you don’t know what’s really happening in that person’s world. You don’t know about their mother’s health, their finances or what happened to their kid at school yesterday. All you know is that they are presenting anger. There will be times when that is you, too. And, you would love it if someone didn’t react to a punch with a punch.

I have to give you at least one personal story before I go. I was eating at a restaurant on Orchard Road where you could get any non-alcoholic drink – soft drink, tea, coffee, juice – with the lunch set. They were all written on the lunch menu but Coke Light was left off. The waiter refused to give me a lunch set with a Coke Light, though it was the same price as the other drinks. Why? This is an example of the ridiculous Singaporean “you gotta follow the rules” old way of thinking. Either buy the Coke Light separately and enjoy your meal, or, if it’s the principle of it, then take your business somewhere else. But don’t do it in a huff – that just allows them to blame you.

You could say (speaking very nicely), “We so wanted to eat here. Doesn’t the menu look good, honey?” Then, take out a pen and add up what you were going to spend. Then actually take out the money! “I’m sorry that your boss won’t let us give you all this money because that is really why we came… oh well, bye!” And walk out. At this point, you are finally, maybe, getting somebody to wonder, “What just happened?” Ultimately, people have to realise that there is a choice to be made between following the rules and letting hundreds of dollars walk out the door.

But the key is to not get angry.Do it with joy – do it with laughter. And by the way, if you do it with enough spirit, they’ll give you the Coke Light!

I definitely didn’t use enough charm. So what if you get the drink? Compliment the server. Ask his name and write a letter of compliment. Then the boss will see it and think, “I guess this is okay.”

You would really write a letter to the company?Why wouldn’t you? The guy took a risk, right?

So we should not be demanding good service but asking what can we do to contribute to the encounter?Absolutely. Each of us has small opportunities to make the difference for the next guy.

So what’s your advice to the portion of the expat community that enjoys whingeing about bad service? C’mon, anybody who is an expat in this country is living a good life. Anybody who reads Expat Living magazine is living a good life! The contribution that we can make to help uplift the spirit and service in this country is enormous.

It was a day of gratifying golf and social networking at the annual Client Appreciation Day on 11 January. Attended by corporate clients who share a common interest in promoting the game of golf and business at the same time, early risers pitted their skills against one another on the exciting terrain of the World Classic course.

After a day of inspiring golf challenge, nothing fuelled the soul more than a sumptuous dinner at The Vineyard which featured an array of international cuisine from freshly-shucked oysters and sashimi to Mediterranean Rotisserie Leg Of Lamb, followed by gripping entertainment and an exciting prize presentation at the end of the day.

Members and guests welcomed the arrival of Spring Festival with much revelry at the annual Tuan Bai Lunar New Year celebration. Being one of the most anticipated Club events of the year, this year’s Tuan Bai had no lack of exciting festivities, from the Hong Bao Golf Competition to the sumptuous dinner and enthralling performances.

The daylong celebration teed off in the morning with a bountiful of unexpected twists to the game at the Hong Bao Golf Competition. Novelty challenges such as “Ball of Fortune” and “Nearest the Longevity Snake”, made the competition a diverse experience for both the pro and amateur golfers.

After a day of golfing with the “Longevity Snake”, Members and guests were treated to an abundance of delicacies at the Tuan Bai dinner, alongside captivating performances by the talented “Laguna Idols”. The night ended with a festive lion and dragon dance around the tables, bringing good fortune and blessings to all.

Members who signed up for the 4-day Bangkok Trip in March were treated to a unique golfing experience when they visited three of the most exclusive, private golf clubs in Bangkok, namely, Amata Spring Country Club, Thai Country Club and Alpine Golf Club.

Apart from world class courses, Members were also pampered with luxurious accommodation at the award-winning Vie Hotel Bangkok, a chic 5-star boutique hotel located at the heart of the bustling city.

The World Classic was recently tamed by the combined efforts of both Members and staff at the 19th Annual Member and Staff Golf Competition. Though the staff team paraded a stronger participation this year, many were playing on the World Classic for the first time, unlike seasoned, zealous Members.

As it was impossible to conclude a clear winner in the Texas Scramble, the winning team was determined through a subsequent series of challenges which included passing of marbles using a spoon in their mouths, searching for balloons with their mouths in a pile of flour and putting together a jigsaw puzzle. In the end, the staff team beat the Members for the first time, in close fight.

Siam Country ClubThe name “Plantation” was given in honor of the historic Sugar Cane, Tapioca, and Pineapple plantations located around the Siam Country Club.

The Plantation boasts 27 holes of golf with each 9-hole named accordingly. Groundcovers such as Red Fountain Grass, Love Grass and Yellow Peanut Grass are widely planted and blended into native grasses and surrounding trees, creating an exquisite, beautiful landscape. The Plantation has served as the site for Honda LPGA Thailand.

Formosa First Country ClubSituated at the cross area of Lu-Chu in Taoyuan County and Linkou District of New Taipei City, the Formosa First Golf Course is designed by legendary course designer, Arnold Palmer. It consists of two 18 holes, par 72 courses with Arnold course 6793 yards and Palmer course 6771 yards.

Both courses are classic American hill fields which Arnold Palmer has skillfully placed tee boxes, greens and various bunkers in sync with the original topography. With a simple change of tee boxes and pin placements, these courses can be used for both leisure games and professional tournaments.

The Formosa Yangmei course is situated on the gentle hills of Yangmei city in Taoyuan county, spreading over 70 hectares of scenic view. Arnold Palmer’s intricate use of the natural topography, height differences, as well as, the tropical palms plantation, makes this a fun course to play in. The Formosa First Country Club is just 20 minutes drive from Taipei city and Taoyuan International Airport.

Sutera HarbourSutera Harbour Golf & Country Club is home to the OneAsia Qualifying School and ASEAN PGA Sabah Masters. The 27-hole Graham Marsh-designed championship course is a golfers’ paradise with day and night golf, extensive practice facilities, onsite golf academy, pro shop and full service Club House.

The signature hole #24 at the Garden Course measuring 330 yards provides a breathtaking view of the South China Sea, as well as, the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The 27-hole championship golf course is beautifully landscaped with terrains, waterways and finished with Bermuda grass, alongside demanding bunkers, a challenge for both amateurs and professionals alike.

Clearwater BaySituated on the stunning Clear Water Bay Peninsula, overlooking the South China Sea, The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club is a complete contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Tucked away in the outskirts of metropolitan Hong Kong, The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club is made up of three Clubs, an award-winning 18-hole course, an executive 9-hole course, a 300-berth marina and a family-oriented Country Club which provides exceptional indoor and outdoor sports, and recreation facilities, making it a sought-after location for both leisure and exclusivity.
