REASON TO REJOICE

Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its

character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas

and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of

Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”)

Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment.

The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality

of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly de-

scribes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result

of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gos-

pel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happen-

ing in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings

from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Je-

sus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The

dead are raised, and the poor have the good news pro-

claimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Personal Faith in Jesus On this Third Sunday of Advent we hear the Church’s annual call to rejoice, and yet in the Gospel we seem to hear about the weakening of John the Baptist’s faith. Why

else would he send two of his disciples to ask Jesus whether or not he was the Messiah? Well, one possibility could be that it was not John the Baptist’s faith that

was weakening but rather it was his own disciples who needed their faith increased, in truth, to be fulfilled in Jesus.

He sends these two disciples to Jesus so that they could experience the Christ for

themselves, so that they could hear him preach, and even just be with him. There is no substitute for personal experience for anything in life. How often do we recom-

mend a movie, a book, or even a favorite ice cream flavor to someone, and in the end we simply have to say, “Go try it for yourself and you’ll see what I mean!”

Advent is the season to have our faith strengthened, to be reminded of the power of Jesus to work miracles, both in the Gospels and especially in our lives. To grow in

faith is to grow in joy because the Lord whom we come to know is the source of our joy. Believe and rejoice in the Lord always! -- Father James M. Sullivan, O.P.

Message From Father Pat

I had several requests to put the words of a song that I composed and shared

during my homily on December 1st in the bulletin. I hope the words will open

your hearts to the presence of the Lord. God bless you, Fr. Pat

YOU ARE EVERYWHERE

God of creation, I know you are near but sometimes I doubt and my heart fills with fear.

Increase my faith Lord and open my eyes to witness your presence in the earth, sea and sky,

In the sun in the morning and even the rain, in all of creation that praises your name.

You are everywhere, let me see and let me bring your presence to those who see me.

God of salvation, God of all grace, in your compassion let me see your face.

Increase my faith Lord and open my eyes to witness your presence in the water of life,

In the word of forgiveness, in the vows that are said, in the oil of salvation, in the wine and

the bread.

You are everywhere, let me see and let me bring your presence to those who see me.

God of all hope to those in despair, may I ever be mindful of your tender care.

Increase my faith Lord and open my eyes to witness your presence in the poor’s lonely cries.

May I see you and serve you in the hungry and ill. May I know that to give hope is your holy

will.

You are everywhere, let me see and let me bring your presence to those who see me.

God of creation, I know you are here. You speak to my heart Lord softly but clearly.

Increase my faith Lord and open my eyes to witness your presence in the work of our lives,

In the craft of a worker, in the words of a poem, in a dancer’s creation, in the notes of a

song.

You are everywhere, let me see and let me bring your presence to those who see me.

SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ (c. 1542-1591)
