MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catho-lic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and, by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION On the First Friday of each month we gather in prayer and praise before the Blessed Sacrament. Following the 8 a.m. Mass and concluding at 10 p.m.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Parents of infants requesting information about Baptism may contact Father Ken in the parish office. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the second Saturday of the month.

CELEBRATION OF CHRISTIAN FUNERALS At the time of death, a family member should contact the parish office, as soon as possible, to arrange the date and time for the Funeral Liturgy.

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Couples must begin preparation for their Sacrament at least six months prior to their proposed wedding date. Please call the parish office for more information.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK The third Saturday of each month after the 8:00 a.m. Mass. In the event of serious illness or medical emergency, Anointing of the Sick and Eucharist may be arranged by contacting the parish office

Jubilee Year of Mercy Amos castigates religious people who, “comfortably complacent” (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse of culture, nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus’ parable, such complacency becomes the rich man’s undoing. He nei-ther hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither denied him lefto-vers nor ordered him removed. That is Jesus’ devastat-ing point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for him. Only in death, separated by “a great chasm” (Luke 16:26), could the rich man finally see Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life, right before his eyes. Like the rich man’s “five brothers still in my father’s house” (16:27–28), we who are alive in the Church still have time to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our door—and time to do something. Who, specifically, concretely, practically, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for that Jesus-in-the-flesh during this Jubilee Year of Mercy?

RCIA SPONSORS NEEDED

We are now blessed to have several adults who are in the RCIA process. An important part of this process is the per-

sonal touch of a sponsor from our congregation to move alongside of them during this time.

Basically, a sponsor is a friend. One who is supportive and welcoming to the new candidate as they learn about the

Catholic faith. A person who will be invitational and include them in their everyday lives and events. Do you recognize

these gifts in yourself? If you do, we need you to share them!

A sponsor is a vital part of the process and a link to the social and spiritual life of our church. The sponsor will attend

the RCIA meetings after the 9am mass. They are not expected to be experts in Catholicism and know everything there is

about the faith. We as a team certainly do not. What we hope to do is evangelize, which is an important part of this pre-

sent period of “Inquiry” and Precatechumenate. We share our stories! We share about Jesus’ forgiveness and uncondi-

tional love”. As we share, we learn more about our faith and our personal relationship with Jesus.

It is a fun, interesting and vital ministry. We laugh, cry, celebrate and learn together in a social and spiritual environ-

ment. In the near future you will be hearing first hand from some of our past sponsors and their experiences.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

La última mitad del siglo pasado, nuestro con-

tinente vio el derrame de muchísima sangre

cristiana. No podemos olvidar la sangre de

quienes dieron la vida por el Evangelio de la

justicia: Michel Quiroga evangelizador colom-

biano; Agustina Rivas monjita peruana; Vi-

cente Matute líder indígena hondureño; Marle-

ne Kegler una universitaria de 23 años argenti-

na. Estos son algunos ejemplos de tantos que

murieron creyendo que la doctrina cristiana no

se puede contener en templos y conventos.

Dieron la vida por querer vivir su fe en situa-

ciones de discriminación e injusticia. Derra-

mando su sangre se convirtieron en ángeles de

justicia que gritan a Dios uniendo sus voces a

la de Abel.

Todos estos mártires latinoamericanos mu-

rieron a manos de latinoamericanos. Dieron

sus vidas, según la mártir chilena Joan Alsina,

como granos de trigo. Y desde el cielo ella nos

pide: “Esperamos tu solidaridad. ¿Entiendes

ahora lo que significa el Cuerpo de Cristo? Si

nosotros nos hundimos es algo de tu esperanza

la que se hunde. Pero si de las cenizas asumi-

mos la vida de nuevo, es algo que nace de nue-

vo en ustedes.”

MIRAR MÁS ALLÁ DE NOSOTROS MISMOS

El mensaje de las lecturas de hoy es una vieja

historia. El Ciudadano Kane, Papi Warbucks y el Rey

Midas son sólo unos pocos de los familiares personajes

ficticios que pensaban que con una enorme fortuna po-

drían comprar la felicidad y la completa satisfacción.

Papi Warbucks admite haber pisoteado a algunas perso-

nas en su ascenso a la cumbre. Kane trató de comprar la

palabra impresa y el estrellato para su joven esposa,

mientras que el Rey Midas conjura inmensa fortuna y

tragedia sólo con su toque.

Aprendemos claramente en las lecturas de hoy

que nada de esto es posible. Alcanzamos la verdadera

felicidad cuando nos interesamos en los demás. Cuando

practicamos las virtudes que Dios describe a Timoteo:

fe, amor, mansedumbre, piedad, rectitud y justicia. El

Evangelio nos recuerda que no osemos ignorar las nece-

sidades de los demás, actuando como si no notáramos su

sufrimiento. El llamado de Dios a nosotros es demasiado

claro para ignorarlo ni un solo día más.
