Students from all over the country and the

world come to Christian Brothers University in

mid-town Memphis for a vibrant and involved

education that delivers the tools for success

after graduation. CBU is academically rigor-

ous, exciting and diverse. And CBU students

are passionate about this extraordinary envi-

ronment that prepares them for the real world

by pushing them to step up, ask questions,

and get involved.

CBU’s students, faculty, administration,

and alumni are part of a much larger Catholic

educational network. The university was

founded in 1871 by the Brothers of the

Christian Schools and is part of the Lasallian

Community active in 81 countries of the

world and in more than 1,000 educational

institutions. In the United States, CBU is one

of seven Lasallian colleges and universities.

Excellence in teaching and individualized

attention are hallmarks of the university. CBU

is a values-oriented, interfaith educational

community preparing students for profession-

al careers and lives of moral responsibility

and community involvement.

The first private institution in Memphis to

integrate, Christian Brothers University is also

known for providing students of all back-

grounds and faiths a well-rounded education

built on individualized attention, hands-on

learning, an encouragement of ethical devel-

opment, and a passion for achievement above

and beyond one’s potential.

CBU is the largest, most comprehensive

private university in West Tennessee, offering

degrees in engineering, business, science,

liberal arts, and education. The university

also offers graduate programs in business

administration, education and engineering

management.

CBU is ranked by U.S. News and World

Report among the Top 35 Southern

Universities. CBU is also cited for its campus

diversity among Southern universities. The

university is also listed in The Princeton

Review’s “Best Southeastern Colleges,” Great

Colleges for the Real World, and Thomson-

Peterson’s Competitive Colleges.

A member of the NCAA and the Gulf South

Conference, CBU student athletes compete in

eight different sports. The Lady Bucs

women’s soccer team won the 2002 NCAA

Division II soccer championship.

Christian Brothers University capitalizes on

its small size and passionate faculty to deliv-

er a unique curriculum that’s built on ques-

tions, discussions, disagreements, and

debates. At CBU professors get to know stu-

dents, and classmates get to know each

other. They interact in small groups and, as

their comfort and confidence increases, so

does the intensity of discussions and explo-

ration.

Last year, CBU earned seventeen wins and a fourth-straightGulf South Conference Championship. The Christian BrothersUniversity Lady Buccaneer’s have been the envy of the GSCfor the past four years, capturing an NCAA Division IINational Championship in 2002, a runner-up finish in 2001and hosting the NCAA South Region Tournament last season.

With arguably the toughest schedule the team has everfaced, the 2004 Lady Bucs will look to continue their suc-cess streak and are matching up against some of the coun-try’s top talent in women’s soccer.

Five of the first six matches this season will be playedagainst nationally ranked opponents including West Floridaat home and the University of Tampa on the road. The LadyBucs will play seven of the nation’s top 25 teams in the first10 matches of the season.

GOALKEEPER: Sophomore Amy Clunie will be the starter ingoal this year. Clunie is a transfer from the University ofMemphis where in six matches last season she had a 1-1-3record allowing just six goals for an average of 1.06 pergame. She had a save percentage of .786 and recorded twoshutouts.

BACKFIELD: Senior Kristen Killough and sopho-more Jo Welsh return as starters for the ondefense this year. Killough had her best offen-sive season to date scoring five goals andadding eight assists for 18 points on the year.Welsh had three assists last season and helpedlead on of the nation’s premier defenses. JuniorElla Thorsteinsdottir used last year as a red-shirt season after transferring from DivisionI Richmond. She was a member of the

Atlantic-10 All-Rookie team her freshman year where shewas named pre-season All-Conference and had started in 13of 16 matches.

Junior Angela Papachristou returns to the team after sit-ting out last season with a knee injury. Junior Joanne Tobinleads a list of new defenders for the Lady Bucs. She will bea starter in the backfield while freshmen Brittany Butler andStephanie Morgan should see solid time off the bench.

MIDFIELD: Sophomore Cara O’Hern is the lone returningstarter in the Midfield for the. She scored one goal and hadtwo assists last season for four points playing in all 20matches, starting the final 13. Junior transfers HelenGoodacre and Ciara McGuinness, along with freshmanColleen Hart will all start for this season. Junior AshleySmith and freshman Rachael Valenzuela will see time off thebench and will fight for starting spots. Smith played in onematch last season assisting on one goal.

FORWARDS: Senior forward Stacy-Jo Fletcher leads a talent-ed group of forwards this season. Fletcher started all 20matches in 2003, scoring 17 goals and leading the GSC inassists with 18 for a total of 52 points on the year.

Sophomore Jessica Manting and junior transfer EmblaGretarsdottir will help give the Lady Bucs one of the mostpotent front lines in the conference. Manting saw actionin six games last year scoring twice and filled in at goal-keeper recording a 12-0 shutout of Ouachita Baptist.

Grettarsdottir is a speedy scorer from Iceland andwill compliment Fletcher nicely. Freshman

Franchesca DeRanzo should provide aninstant punch off the bench.

The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE(GSC) enters its 34th year ofexcellence, continuing a traditionof growth and success that hasbrought it distinction as one ofthe elite NCAA Division II con-ferences. With 17 universitiesin six southeastern states, the GSCis the largest playing Conference in DivisionII.

GSC members feature comprehensive ath-letic programs that compete for 13 officialconference championships: football, men’sand women’s cross country, men’s andwomen’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’sand women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf. In2003 and 2004, the GSC conducted a provi-sional championship in women’s golf.

We take pride in our 38 National TeamChampionships in 12 sports and the empha-sis on academic success by our coaches andstudent-athletes. The 2003-04 season was abanner campaign for the GSC, whichclaimed its first-ever NationalChampionships in Women’s Volleyball (NorthAlabama) and Men’s Tennis (West Florida)and added its fifth Baseball crown behindDelta State’s first-ever Title.

Originally known as the Mid-SouthConference, the GSC was formed by six uni-versities in the summer of 1970: DeltaState, Florence State (now North Alabama),Jacksonville State, Livingston (now WestAlabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State.Due to scheduling problems during the1970-71 academic year, the only leaguesport was football. Jacksonville State wonthe league’s first championship.

In 1971, the league changed its name tothe GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, addedSoutheastern Louisiana (SELA) and NichollsState (increasing the membership to eight),and opened an office in Hammond, LA. Thefollowing year, Mississippi College andNorthwestern Louisiana (NWLA, nowNorthwestern State) were admitted. NELAwithdrew to go Division I two years later, fol-lowed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979.

The conference continued with seven

teams until 1981, when thepresidents admitted ValdostaState. West Georgia joined in1983. Eight years of stabilityended in 1991 when Tennessee-

Martin and Troy State wentDivision I, briefly dropping the GSC

back to seven members, before thebeginning of an expansion resulting in tennew members: Lincoln MemorialUniversity (1992-93); University ofAlabama-Huntsville, Henderson StateUniversity, University of Central Arkansasand Mississippi University for Women(1993-94); University of West Florida(1994-95); and University of Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech University,University of Montevallo and SouthernArkansas University (1995-96).Jacksonville State went Division I at theend of 1992-93. Mississippi Collegedropped to Division III at the end of1995-96, and was replaced by ChristianBrothers Univresity to keep theConference at 16 schools. In July 2000,the GSC welcomed Harding University andOuachita Baptist University, making it thelargest NCAA conference at any level with18 schools. The conference membershipdecreased to 17 when MUW dropped itsathletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season.

Former commissioner Jim McCulloughmoved the GSC office to its presentBirmingham location. The current com-missioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, hasbeen in office since October 1992. He isassisted by Sports InformationDirector Michael Anderson, AssistantSports Information Director TimAndrzejewski, Office Manager Mary JeanBox and Assistant to the CommissionerAndrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSCBoard of Directors is Dr. RobertMcChesney of the University ofMontevallo. Joining him on the executivecommittee are past-Chair Dr. RobertBrown (Arkansas Tech University) and ViceChair Dr. Andy Westmoreland (OuachtiaBaptist University). The Supervisors of

Officials are Bill Johnson (Football), MikeMurphy (Basketball-East Division) andJohn Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).
