  • Steve Scurlock ‘68 was the 2018 recipient of the Grizzly award. Steve’s idea for the Annual Sporting Clays Fundraiser and his unrelenting efforts to make it a success each year have contributed so much to the GFSA Scholarship, Veterans’ and other funds. We all owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for this and for all he has done for GFSA. The Grizzly Award was initiated in 2016 in order to recognize those among us who have gone above and beyond in contributing to the success of our organization. The first recipient was John Paul Tallent ‘62 in 2015, followed by Roy T. Van Houten ‘60 and Leon Watson ‘59 in 2016 and Cathy Phillips Shipp ‘65 in 2017. Steve follows these very deserving Alums and they all serve as models of dedication and service to our Association.

    Class of 1968, 50th Reunion, September 29, 2018

The 2018 Reunion is in the books. The GHS Class of 1968 had a great time planning and putting on a great party for our schoolmates. If you were unable to attend, especially the dinner, you missed out on a lot of fun and a few surprises. Over one-third of our ’68 graduating class attended and it was wonderful to see everyone and catch up.

SAVE THE DATE: 2019 All-School Reunion will be held on September 29, 2019

at the Gladewater Former Students’ Building. Class of 1969 is hosting and will be

Closing Out “The Sixties” – A Decade That Changed a Nation!

The following is from an article titled “Young dancers meet Kilgore College Rangerettes, participate in halftime show”, by Glenn Evans, Longview News-Journal, September 29, 2018.

The young ladies would soon have a chance to meet the

actual K-girl, Jackie Johnson Ray of Gladewater, who

shared her story of becoming an icon as if by accident.

“In the summer of 1966, Miss Davis decided to have a

logo drawn for the Rangerettes,” Ray said in the Deana

Bolton-Covin Rangerette Gymnasium where her figure

graces center court. “We went out in a field with a

photographer, all the sophomore Rangerettes. ... So, about

two weeks later, we were in here practicing, and she

yelled across the gym for me to come into the office. I’m

just going, ‘Omigosh. What have I done?’ I go up the

steps to her office, and she explains that she is having

a logo designed for the Rangerettes, and I’m to be the

    model.”

Ray can still strike the K-girl pose, so named because the

way she positioned her limbs with a slight tilt at the waist

resembling the first letter of the college’s name and its

host city. And she revealed a little known fact. “She

didn’t tell me to do this,” Ray said of Davis, before

confessing she’d gone on to Stephen F. Austin State

University and forgotten all about the poster a Dallas

artist drew of her in that pose until the 1970s, when her

    husband brought one to her.

A teacher in Tyler ISD for 30 years, Ray said her

Rangerette experience still hasn’t ended. “What an

unexpected, unbelievable joy to get to represent the

Rangerettes,” she said, confessing she also doomed

herself to forever be striking that pose. “There’s no telling

how many times.” Today, there’s no telling how many

will do it. It just happened. I still am amazed.”

    Jackie Johnson

    Ray, GHS ’65,

    poses for a photo

    with the Kilgore

    College Rangerette

    “K-Girl”.

    Ray was a member

    of the 29th line and

    in the summer of

    1966 modeled for

    the iconic logo.

    Kay Pothoff Wallace,

    GHS Class of ’62 and

    Rangerette 1962-64

    was a member of the

    Rangerette 23rd Line.

    Kay remains active in

    the Rangerettes

    Forever organization at

    Kilgore College.

As a member of Rangerettes Forever,

    Kay participates in most

    all of their annual events

    and also stays active as

    a volunteer who gives

    much of her time lending

    support to incoming

    young Rangerettes each

    year.
