s2s Ice Cream Social By: Christopher Blanco, Freshman
The S2S ice cream social was held October 2, 2014 for the new students of Stacey Jr./Sr. High
School. The people that attended were the whole S2S team along with sponsors Mrs. Duron and the
Counselor Ms. Nicholson. The S2S members held a game of Pictionary before eating ice cream. After
Pictionary, S2S members handed out ice cream to the new students. The new students had a lot of fun
and liked conversing with the S2S members and felt good that they had made new friends.

Learning and Conserving!!!
Sixth grade students in Mrs. Torre’s homeroom class practice multiplication and division of integers through real-world problem-solving. Instead of traditional paper and pencils, we
used dry erase markers and white boards made out the same material that is used to create shower stalls in our homes. Erasers came from clean, gently used socks and kitchen towels.
Learning and conserving…it’s a 6th grade thing!!

We Are Engineers!
Students in Mrs. Allen's class discussed what is involved in being
an engineer in Science. The first graders had a fantastic time
brainstorming ideas to answer the
question Mrs. Allen proposed to them. "How can I get the golf ball
from one side of the room to the other without walking it over?"
Pictured are Mason, Layla, and Addy demonstrating a plan to use a
ramp or "inclined plane" as they learned too!
Mrs. M.K. and her Senior class invite you to enjoy some "sunshine in a pouch!"
River of Fire Activity
Mrs. Duron’s class was challenged to the River of Fire Activity where students had to communicate, work together, AND problem solve. Their goal was to get the three radioactive containers (tennis
balls) to the other side of the molten lava river (sidewalk) without touching them or subject them to quick movement. The only tools/equipment they had to work with was a rope, four pieces of cloth,
and the clothes that they were wearing. If anyone touched the rope and containers (that were emitting a radioactive light that is deadly to the human eye) they had to be blindfolded. Good Luck!

Thirsty? By: Brandon Armstead, Junior
Capri-Suns are currently being sold at Stacey. The Senior class started selling the thirst quenching
pouches in late September. This school year students are provided with healthy options; a Capri-Sun contains
100% juice and no sugar. They come in four flavors: grape, apple, fruit punch, and berry for only $0.75.
Capri-Suns are being sold in the second building in room 4602 aka Mrs. M.K.'s room. Mrs. M.K. and her
Senior class invite you to enjoy some "sunshine in a pouch!"

Lackland ISD E-News National Lunch Week Page 7 of 14 www.lacklandisd.net Oct. 17, 2014 Lackland ISD celebrates National School Lunch Week (NSLW)
Lackland ISD’s 2014 Celebration of National School Lunch Week was a huge success. During this week the students were treated to a special menu that featured local products including watermelons, oranges, and
corn, all from Texas. According to our Cafeteria Supervisor, Lolita Carrillo, the Texas watermelon was a big hit with our students. Texas corn was added to the cafeteria’s already delicious corn bread recipe to create
the Texas Cornbread featured on this week’s menu. Guest appearances included local military volunteers and a guest chef from Education Service Center Region
20. The students were thrilled to have local military volunteers serve them in the cafeteria. Our Guest Chef presented students with stickers for trying new items and correctly identifying the fresh fruits and
vegetables in her produce basket. The students were treated to other fun events, including a coloring contest for the younger grades. The
colorful decorations and fun posters added to the festive environment. A big “THANK YOU” goes out to our military volunteers, ESC Region 20’s Chef Bev Concha, and our
wonderful Cafeteria Staff.

More Fun...with Recycling
1. Create a Bin or Tray in Your Home Office for Scrap Paper
Set up a bin or tray to put scrap pieces of paper such as left over sheets from crafts, one-sided printed paper,
and even old flyers. When the container gets full, cut the paper into a quarter of the original size, and use a
paper clip or staple to fasten the top corners together for a brand new note pad or day planner.
2. Buy Recycled Grocery Tote Bags for Gift Bags
Numerous retail stores sell a variety of recycled bags, and many even have bright colors and fun designs.
These bags are usually pretty inexpensive, and typically cost less than gift bags or wrapping paper. You are
also increasing the chances of the bag being recycled a few more times!
3. Grow a House Plant That Can be Easily Separated
Houseplants such as jade or aloe, even the spicy chillies, can be easily separated into smaller pots and serve
as gifts for friends and family. Gardening doubles as a huge stress reliever, and often yields a great sense of
satisfaction. Not to mention, plants also improve the air quality, and are fun to watch grow.
4. Use Citrus Peels as Air Fresheners
Instead of throwing away peels from citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit, pull them
inside the garbage disposal and run it to keep your kitchen and house smelling fresh. Make sure that you do this
with just peels! You want to slice them into sections that your disposal can handle, so trial and error is key.
