    Laces

    Yarns are criss-crossed to createintricate designs. Yarns may beinterlooped, interlaced or knotted togive open-mesh structure.

    Beautiful decorative designs can becreated through lace making. Laces

    are very important trimmings thatare used to decorate a garment

    Nets

    They are open-mesh fabrics withgeometrical shapes.

    These yarns may be knotted at thepoint of intersection.

    You notice it being used verycommonly for mosquito nets.

    Many laces are available in severalforms and widths with the same or

    co-ordinating motifs. When selecting lace, place it over the

    fabric you are using and stand backto view the pieces.

    The lace detailing is often morenoticeable if the colours of the laceand the fabric do not match exactly

    Chantilly lace is a lightweight lacewith delicate floral motifs on a fine

    net background. It is available in yardage and trims.

    Alencon lace has fine cord outlining theindividual motifs.

    Available beaded and unbeaded and in yardageand trims, it is popular for bridal gowns.

    Although more expensive than many laces,alencon yardage and trims may be cut apart toprovide economical motifs and edging.

    Schiffli is an lace that has a fine netbackground, embellished with

    machine-stitched motifs thatresemble hand embroidery stitches.

    Embroidered organza with itssheer organza background, hasmotifs similar to Schiffli.

    It is cut and handled like a sheerfabric.

    Venice lace is a made from heavy yarns, givingit a three-dimensional texture.

    It does not have a net background; picot bridges

    join the motifs. Usually rayon or polyester, Venice lace has either

    a shiny or matt finish and is available inappliqus and trims.

    Galloon laces are scalloped on both edges.

    This versatile lace can be used as a wide borderor cut apart so each edge can be used separately.

    Galloon laces range from narrow trims to wideyardage.

    Allover laces have two straight edges andmotifs that repeat regularly throughout thefabric.

    Allover lace can be used for an entire garment, orfor individual motifs cut out and used asappliqus.

    Lace yardage widths usually range from 36 to

    Edgings are narrow trims with onescalloped edge. Widths range from

    to 6 (6 mm to 15 cm). An edging can be used to finish a

    garment edge.

    Lace appliqus are individual motifsused as trim. Some appliques come inmirror image pairs.

    A lace bodice is a large appliqu designedto be applied over the bodice of a dress; itusually fits over the bustline and ends at

    Net fabrics are used for veils,

    petticoats,

    interfacings, and garment selections such as sleeves and

    skirts.
