Labratory Testing ProvesTIGG 5DC 12 x 30 Carbon Removes TTHMs
From Municipal Drinking Water
A recent study conducted by an independent environmental laboratory proves that TIGG’s 5DC 12 x 30 activated carbon is effective at removing TTHMs from municipal drinking water. The test was sponsored by a municipality that
needed to come into compliance with the EPA’s DPB Stage 2 regulations. The study sponsor historically had high levels of TTHM in its water that ranged between 105 and 171 µg/L. The municipality talked to TIGG about a water purification adsorption system. While some in the industry insist that coal-based activated carbon is the only effective means of removing disinfection byproducts from municipal drinking water, TIGG experts recommended their 5DC 12 x 30 virgin coconut activated carbon. The municipality had an independent laboratory run a pilot study using a rapid small-scale column test. They used TIGG’s 5DC 12 x 30 NSF activated carbon, which is designed to remove low concentrations of contaminants from potable water. The laboratory found that initial TTHM concentrations of 138 µg/L were reduced to < 1.0 µg/L following treatment with virgin coconut activated carbon. Based on the scale-up of the testing, it was determined that a full scale carbon adsorber would effectively treat TTHMs for 325 days before the bed needed a changeout. Not only is coconut-based activated carbon effective, it is typically more economical than coal-based activated carbon. The following report shows the laboratory’s results over a 24-day period.

Granular Activated Carbon
Rapid Small-Scale Column Test 1. Introduction The Stage 1 and 2 Disinfectant and Disinfection By-Products Rules require that drinking water systems produce water with total trihalomethanes (TTHM) less than 80 µg/L, and haloacetic acids (HAA5) less than 60 µg/L. Generally TTHMs and HAA5 are formed by chemical reaction between organic matter and chlorine. The organic content of source water can significantly impact the formation of TTHMs and HAA5s. Source water with high organics will usually cause high TTHMs and/or HAA5s depending on the organic make-up of the source water. Historically the water purification station has had high TTHMs (105 - 171 µg/L) and low HAA5s (1.1 - 3.1 µg/L). Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) treatment has been proposed for use at the Water Purification Station to reduce TTHMs to less than the current maximum contaminant level (MCL = 80 µg/L) When considering new treatment options, such as GAC, a water system must perform a pilot study as required by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) pursuant to OAC 252:626-9-5(b). The results of the pilot study are used to determine design considerations for full scale deployment of the treatment option. For this study, a rapid small scale column test (RSSCT) will be used to assess the effectiveness of GAC treatment for removal of TTHMs. 2. Background 2.1. Source Water The water purification station treats water collected from a lake. The lake is a surface water reservoir which generally has high organic matter and therefore the potential for TTHM and HAA5 formation following chemical reactions with chlorine. 2.2. Water Treatment Water treatment at the water purification station consists of clarification with cold lime softening and 10% sodium hypochlorite (bleach) disinfection, sand filtration, 5 micron cartridge filters, pH adjustment with sulfuric acid, reverse osmosis (RO) filtration, and post-treatment chlorine addition (residual). Additionally, drinking fountains are fitted with carbon filters. At the location for the proposed GAC system, after the RO, initial water quality results were TOC < 0.25 mg/L, TTHM = 106 to 138 µg//L, and HAA5 < 1.00 µg/L.
2.3. Historical Data for Disinfection Byproduct The water purification station measures total trihalomethanes (TTHM) and five haloacetic acids (HAA5) quarterly at the DBPMX location, Coal Yard Drinking Fountain. They have exceeded the TTHM limit on several occasions and the running annual average is above the MCLs of 80 µg/L. Historical data for the TTHMs and HAA5s found on the water purifier's website is provided in below (Table1).
Table 1. Historical TTHM and HAAS data for Water Purification Station. (2014 - 2003).
In 2014, the TTHM ranged from 43.00 µg/L to 147.00 µg/L and averaged 112.5 µg/L. The HAA5 ranged from < 1.0 µg/L (BPQL) to 1.51 µg/L and averaged 1.31 µg/L. The yearly average for TTHMs is above the MCL. From 2003 -2014, the running annual average for TTHM also exceeded the MCL (Table 1).
Recent samples taken after the filters and RO confirmed the low HAA5 levels.
3. Treatment by Granular Activated Carbon
Granular activated carbon (GAC) is one method used for the removal of disinfection by-products and total organic carbon. For this study we employed TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF coconut-based activated carbon. This carbon is specially designed to remove low concentrations of contaminants from potable water. This activated carbon provides high microporosity and high surface area to permit effective removal of THM' s and their precursors, chlorinated hydrocarbons and other contaminants.
3.1. GAC Properties and Typical Applications
In liquid phase potable water treatment equipment, TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF is reported to effectively remove organics as well as chlorine, phenols, pesticides, taste and odor. TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF meets AWWA Standards B-600-74, ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for drinking water applications. Typical properties of TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF are reported in Table 2.

A rapid small-scale column test was conducted based on ASTM D 6586-03 Standard Practice for the
Prediction of Contaminant Adsorption on GAC in Aqueous Systems Using Rapid Small-Scale Column Tests. This practice consists of a method for the rapid determination of breakthrough curves and the prediction of GAC usage rates for the removal of soluble contaminants from water. This was accomplished by passing contaminated water, at a constant rate of flow, through a bed of specially sized granular activated carbon until predetermined levels of breakthrough occurred.
The contaminant in this test was total trihalomethanes (TTHM) and the breakthrough level was set at the MCL of 80 µg/L. The data obtained from the column test can be used in conjunction with a sorption isotherm to determine the full scale carbon adsorption unit breakthrough time and to estimate the size and operational conditions for the full scale treatment process.
Testing was done using TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF (GAC) in a continuous flow column run, stopping only periodically to replenish raw water supplies to feed the GAC. The rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) uses empty bed contact time (EBCT) and hydraulic loading to describe the adsorption process. Empty bed contact time is the volume of GAC in liters divided by the flow rate in liters/minute, to give the minutes of contact time.
The RSSCT test apparatus consists of glass columns, PTFE tubing and fittings, metering pump, inlet filter, feed and collection containers (Figure 1). The glass columns each have a 10.5 mm diameter and are 38 cm in length. The depth of the GAC was 24 cm and the volume of GAC in each column was 20.8 ml. Inlet filtering consisted of fiberglass wool and filter paper. A variable speed Masterflex pump was used to pump contaminated water through the GAC columns.
Figure 1. RSSCT Test Apparatus Configuration: Water containers consisted of 5 gallon buckets with sealed lids; the pump was a Masterflex variable speed pump; PTFE tubing was used to draw water from the containers to the column; flow (mL/min) was determined using a 20 mL volumetric flask and stop watch. Note: Flow was not measured prior to sampling to avoid volatile losses (i.e. sampling was conducted then flow was measured and recorded).
3.3. Adsorption Isotherm The basic instrument for evaluating activated carbon use is the adsorption isotherm. The isotherm represents an empirical relationship between the amount of contaminant adsorbed per unit weight of carbon and its equilibrium water concentration. The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms are frequently used to represent adsorption equilibrium. TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF (GAC) was tested for its ability to remove Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM) from treated drinking water. Different masses of GAC were added to 0.06 Liters of the drinking water (initial TTHM concentration = 132 µg/L) and contacted for 5 days at 21°C and pH = 6.2. A 5 day contact time was used to ensure equilibrium was established. Varying masses (0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 g) of GAC were weighed into 60 mL VOAs. 60 mL (0.06 L) of TTHM water (132 mg/L) was placed in each of the VOAs. Glass beads were then added to each reactor to displace the volume of the water and ensure zero head-space during the course of the experiment. After the 5 day equilibration period, samples were collected and transferred from the 60 mL VOAs to 40 mL VOAs to be submitted for analysis. Samples were transferred using a 10 mL syringe with 0.45 11 filter. The 0.45 11 filter was used once the samples had been extracted from the 60 mL VOAs, but before being transferred to the 40 mL VOAs. This was to remove particulate GAC from solution which might interfere with analytical equipment. Samples were capped with zero head-space and submitted for analysis. EPA Method 524.3 was used for analysis of TTHMs. It should be noted that the potential for volatile losses was present while transferring samples from 60 mL VOAs to 40 mL VOAs. However, each reactor was treated the same and any volatile losses that occurred would have similarly occurred in each of the reactors. Therefore, data were submitted along with a control reactor that remained sealed throughout the entirety of the isotherm experiment, effectively avoiding potential losses. The control data was then used to correct for volatile losses that occurred during sample transfer. 4. Sampling and Analysis
Initially samples were collected three times daily (morning, noon, and night), preserved using sodium thiosulfate (Na2S203), and stored for analysis later. The column was run continuously for 12 days. At the end of the 12 day run time, select samples were collected and analyzed for TTHMs using EPA Method 524.3. Following the 12 day run time, the GAC column was not approaching breakthrough (1.0 µg/L). For this reason
sampling was reduced to once daily for following runtimes. As before, the second runtime lasted 12 days and ran continuously, stopping only to replenish raw
water supplies. Following the second 12 day run time, the GAC was still not approaching breakthrough (<1.0 µg/L). Analytical results, QA/QC, and chain of custody forms are provided as additional information attached to this report. EPA Method 524.3 was used for analysis of TTHMs.
5. Results and Discussion
TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF (GAC) was tested for its ability to remove Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM) from treated drinking water (Figure 2).
Figure 2. Langmuir Sorption Isotherm Plot for TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF and 132 mg/L TTHM solution; qm = 25 µg/g; Kads = 0.062 L/µg: RL0.098.
Data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Results revealed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm was the best model for TIHM adsorption onto GAC with a R2 value of 0.99. The essential features of Langmuir adsorption isotherms parameters can be used to predict the affinity between the sorbate and sorbent using a dimensionless constant called separation factor or equilibrium parameter (RL), which is expressed by the following relationship (Eq. 1):
The RL value indicates the adsorption to be either unfavorable if RL > 1, favorable if 0 < RL< 1, and irreversible if RL = 0. From the Langmuir Isotherm Plot data, the RL is greater than 0 but less than 1 indicating favorable adsorption. TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF is effective at removing THMs from potable water treated at the Water Purification Station. In this study, initial TTHM concentrations of 138 µg/L were effectively reduced to < 1.0 µg/L following treatment with virgin TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF. The target breakthrough was initially set at 80 µg/L (TIHM). Following 24 days of continuous flow through the RSSCT column effluent TTHM concentrations were still < 1.0 mg/L. Failure to reach significant post-treatment TTHM concentrations in a reasonable time-frame required a breakthrough assumption. If we assume that breakthrough occurred at 24 days (TTHM were < 1.0 mg/L at 24 days), we can determine baseline parameters for a full scale column system that is extremely efficient. Because of this, there is no reason to extend the study further. Assuming a 24 day breakthrough, we can determine a full-scale design life of at least 325 days before effluent TTHM concentrations approach 80 µg/L (Table 3).
Table 3. Design parameters for RSSCT and Design-Column.
6. Conclusions
TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF is effective at removing THMs from potable water treated at the Water Treatment Station. In this study, initial TTHM concentrations of 138 µg/L were effectively reduced to < 1.0 µg/L following treatment with virgin TIGG 5DC 1230 NSF.
Based on scale-up of the RSSCT, it was determined that a full-scale column could effectively treat TTHMs for at least 325 days before replacement GAC was needed. For this to occur, the full-scale column must meet the design specification outlines in Table 3 and must continue to operate at or below current flow rates (12,000 gpd).
