Lab Assignment Title: Human Gametogenesis Date: 150211
Purposes / Objectives:
1. Observe Cheek Cells and Estimated Cell size using a Calculator 2. Observe Human Gametogenesis in prepared MS Slides via standard Light Microscopy. 3. Survey and capture illustrations and photos from the Internet of the above. 4. Measure Cell and Structure Size utilizing Field of View Calculator.
Hypothesis: NA Specimens:
1. Specimen of cheek cells form self 2. Prepared MS slides featuring a cross-section of:
A. Sperm Smear Human B. Testes C. Ovary D. Maturing, Follicle with Human Oocytes E. Corpus Luteum
. Methods / Tools / Instrumentation / Procedures:
1. Prepared a MS sample of cheek cells from self and observed via standard Light Microscopy 2. Standard Light microscope with 100, 400 and 1000 Magnification 3. View cheek cells at 100X and 400X 4. View Human sperm smear, and view ovary maturing and follicle sections in human ovary at
100X, 400X, and 1000X.

Lab Report 1 Gametogenesis A Karle 150211 2
Results ▪ Viewing the target specimens and structures with the standard light microscopes required skill
and patience. ▪ Surveying the Internet for specimen sizes was challenging. ▪ Gametogenesis tissues and cells are presented in Table 1.
o Male and Female structures ▪ Sample measurements from the FOV Calculator are presented in Table 2. ▪ Table 3 lists the size measurements for the cells and structures of Gametogenesis ▪ Figure 1 compares the cells and structure sizes of Gametogenesis
Analysis / Discussion:
▪ We observed that the reproductive organ cells have very different sizes. The female ovary and oocyte cells are comparably larger than the male sperm and spermatogonia.
▪ All the cells share some resemblance in shape and form except for the sperm. ▪ The testis and ovary have similar form and characteristics in the images examined whereas the
oocytes and mature follicles have similar shapes and nuclei. Conclusions/Further Considerations:
▪ Even though all the cells look like they could potentially be around the same size, by using the calculations- we are able to see in Fig 1 that they are very different sizes.
▪ I learned that the oocyte is 20x larger then the sperm cell. This makes sense since the oocyte has the opportunity to develop into a mature egg.
▪ I found it interesting that the ovary and check cell were quite similar in size. ▪ I think it takes a very meticulous and patient person to be able to study and analyze cells and life
at the second to smallest level on a daily basis. References
