LAB EQUIPMENT
C H E M I ST R Y
Good Morning!! When you come in, please:
TURN IN: Safety Contract Pre-AP Contract Signed Syllabus Sheet (NOT the whole packet)
GET OUT: A spare sheet of paper and a pencil
WARM UP: Please write 5-7 sentences about what you
think Chemistry is about. What are you first impressions of this class? What do you think of Coach Eikrem/what this is going to be like? What have you heard about Chemistry as a subject? In what ways do you think it’ll be difficult or easy?
BEAKER
The primary function of a beaker is to hold and work with liquids. The beaker is made of specialized glass so it can be heated and cooled without breaking. This type of glass makes the beaker brittle and it must be handled carefully.
BUNSEN BURNER
The function of a bunsen burner is to heat substances. The burner can be regulated by changing the air and gas mixture. .
BALANCE
The function of a balance is to mass objects.
FLASK (ERLENMEYER, VOLUMETRIC)
The function of a flask is to hold and store liquids. If graduated, it can serve to make approximate measurements of volume. One of the main advantages of a flask is the fact that the mixing of its contents can be done with little or no spillage. This same type of glass makes the flask brittle and it must be handled carefully. A stopper or cover allows for storage of liquids.
GRADUATED CYLINDER
Graduated cylinders are specifically designed to make accurate liquid volume measurements. The volume is read from the lowest portion of the meniscus of the liquid; that is, the lowest portion of the convex dip of the liquid as it sits in the graduated cylinder. Graduated cylinders are available in a number of sizes.
TEST TUBE
The function of a test tube is to hold a small experiment, which would be used to conduct an investigation. The test tube is made of specialized glass so it can be heated and cooled without breaking. This same type of glass makes the test tube brittle and it must be handled carefully.
TEST TUBE HOLDER
The test tube holder obviously is designed to hold test tubes. However, it can be used to hold pipettes and stirring rods, etc. as well.
HOT PLATE
The function of a hotplate is obvious. Hotplates are often used as an alternative to the bunsen burner. Some hotplates have a stirring mechanism as part of their design and allows for faster dissolving of some solids by heating and stirring at the same time.
THERMOMETER
The thermometer is an instrument for determining temperature. Most laboratory thermometers are calibrated in the SI scale (degrees Celsius)
WIRE GAUZE
Holds a beaker when on a ring stand.
RING STAND
Used to hold beakers and test tubes when heating or stirring. Come with a clamp for the equipment.
CRUCIBLE
Can heat small amounts of chemicals or materials to a very high temperature without cracking or breaking.
CLAY TRIANGLE
Used to support smaller equipment like a crucible when heating. (Used much like a wire)
BURET
A Buret is used for titrations and to measure small amounts of liquid. Can deliver precise amounts of liquid.
TONGS / TEST TUBE HOLDERS
Used to hold and support a hot test tube or beaker. Also can be used to hold other materials.
WATCH GLASS
Clear, glass. Used as an easy way to see and visualize various liquids. Especially colorful to see any particles etc in the liquid. Can also hold small amounts of solids.
EVAPORATING DISH
The function of an evaporating dish is to hold small amounts of liquids in order to evaoprate the liqud off to leave the dissolved solid. For example, salt in water.
BIOHAZARD SYMBOL
HIGHLY CORROSIVE
Highly corrosive will affect your skin, and can “eat away” at tissue.
HIGHLY FLAMMABLE
HIGHLY REACTIVE
