LAB #7
Reassembly
Get Check Off Sheet
• Before you start, make sure you get a reassembly packet from Mrs. Winegar. If you do not have her check your work and sign the form, you will have to start over.
Piston
• Rotate the piston rings so that the ring gaps are 120 degrees apart and not aligned.
• Have instructor check.
Install the Piston
• Oil the wall of the cylinder, if not the piston could seize, you would be replacing the engine housing, rings, piston, connecting rod. $$$$$
• Get a ring compressor and compress the rings on the piston, then insert the piston into the engine block.
Piston
• Rotate the piston so it is in the correct position.
Install Crankshaft
• Put a lot of oil on the journal, if you do not, the engine could seize and you will be replacing the crankshaft and the connecting rod. $100.
• Install the crankshaft into the block.
Piston Rod Cap
• Rotate the crankshaft so access to the rod cap can be gained to install the rod cap.
• Finger tighten both bolts.• Using a 10mm socket snug the bolts.• Using a torque wrench torque the bolts to 100
inch pounds. No more or no less. Engine failure if you do.
Tappets
• Insert the tappets back into the engine block.
Camshaft Replacement
• Insert the camshaft back into the block. Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft align with the timing marks on the crankshaft.
Crankcase Cover
• Make sure the metal gasket from the crankcase is reinstalled on the crankshaft before putting the cover on.
• Make sure gasket on the crankcase cover is good, gently replace the cover onto the engine block.
Crankcase Cover
• Finger tighten the six crankcase cover bolts• Using the star pattern method snug the six
bolts with a socket.• Again, using the star pattern, torque each bolt
to 110 inch pounds.
Rotate Piston
• Before you move on. Rotate the piston, to make sure everything moves as it should.
Install Flywheel Brake• Finger Tighten the two bolts holding the brake to the block.• Using a 10mm socket install the two bolts that connect the
flywheel brake. Note the two spacers that hold the flywheel brake up off the engine block.
• Torque to 100 inch pounds.
