LA5 Well Represented at Multi-District Rally

The Ronald Reagan Centennial is an historic two-year commemoration to celebrate the 100th birthday of the 40th President of the United States. In June 2009, President Obama signed into law a proclamation to begin planning the Ronald Reagan Centennial, which lasts through 2011.

John Heubusch is Executive Director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, the sole nonprofit organization founded by President Reagan to preserve and promote his legacy. John has also served as Executive Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. John served as Vice President of Communications for the American Red Cross, and was Chief of Staff to Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole. He has a Master's degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University.

President’s Message

Happy New Year Greetings Rotarians! Kathy and I wish you and your families a healthy and prosperous 2011.

LA5 Rotarians joined in helping families in our community have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Under Marjorie

Heller’s leadership, 110 Rotarians from several LA Clubs passed out food, clothes and toys to 3,000 families at the AME

Church “City of Angeles Christmas Giveaway.” What a rewarding experience that was for all of us who participated.

With the leadership of Lance Miller, Past Presidents Don Robinson and Kathy Turner, and in conjunction with KABC TV, our

Club collected toys for the “Spark of Love” Los Angeles Fire Departments annual (LAFD) charity toy program. For 33 years

the LAFD has been providing toys for disadvantaged children. After our meeting on December 17th at the Omni Hotel, our

members met two LA Fire Department hook and ladder trucks who came to the Omni to pick up the toys our Club

collected. LA5 Rotarians also contributed $1,000 to the LAFD’s Sertoma (Service to Mankind) fund that supports the toy

drive. We thank KABC for their great marketing support.

BIG KUDOS’ to Eric Weis and Kate Rosloff for their leadership in promoting and organizing the Membership Reception

held at the new JW Marriott Hotel at LA LIVE! It was a record turnout with over 60 participants including 21 prospective

members. Many thanks to LA5 member Javier Cano, General Manager of the Marriott, for hosting the reception in his

magnificent new hotel.

Thanks to all the LA5 Rotarians who joined the other 450 District Rotarians at the Manhattan Beach Marriott Hotel to hear

Rotary International World President Ray Klinginsmith. President Ray spoke about “Cowboy Logic” and it’s relation to

the work Rotarians do in their communities and internationally.

District 5280 Rotary Clubs participated in Rotary Cares Day this last Saturday. With the leadership of Marjorie Heller, many

LA5er’s worked with five other Clubs to paint the Blind Children’s Center run by LA5 member Midge Horton. Many LA5

Rotarians brought their families to join in the effort. Thank you Rotarians for making “Service Above Self” a reality.

Our Rotary year that ends June 30th will be a busy one. Some of the upcoming events include:

Carol J. Lugo is Vice President of Fund Development for the

Barlow Respiratory Hospital Foundation in Los Angeles.

A native of West Virginia, Carol earned her B.A in Sociology from Marshall

University, and has worked in fundraising over 20 years.

She lives in Long Beach with her son, Lance. She enjoys traveling, reading,

yoga and eating. She has already learned that LA5 will offer her many chances

to eat.

Carol views membership in Rotary as an opportunity to interact with business

and professional persons in a wide variety of fields.

Margaret Crane, CEO of Barlow Respiratory Hospital, sponsored Carol.

Sister Christine Bowman, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred

Heart, is the Director of Planned Giving for the St. Anne’s Foundation.

She most recently served as President of the Santa Barbara Sunrise Rotary Club,

and was an active member of LA5 prior to that. She is a firm believer in Service

Above Self in everything she attempts.

Sister Christine’s hobbies include singing, golf, arts and crafts.

Lynne Norwick, Managing Director Northern Trust, sponsored Sister Christine’s

membership, and we welcome her again to our fellowship.

Painting Day at the

Blind Childrens

Center

On Saturday, January 15, at the Blind Childrens Center, LA5, joined by the Colombo Americano, Historic Filipinotown,

Hollywood, Korea Town, and Manhattan Beach Rotary Clubs, showed the Los Angeles community that Rotary Cares! More than

57 volunteers gave a much-needed face lift to four classrooms, hallways and the playground stage. The energetic Rotarians

cleaned, sanded and painted from 8am to 3pm with hardly a break. It was a day of Rotary Service, fellowship, fun— and

another community project job well done!

Midge Horton the Executive Director of Blind Childrens Center and long time LA5 Rotarian (in the red shirt in the photo above,

along with Gus Oppermann), expressed the Center's appreciation for the splashy make-over. Special thanks go to Gus

Oppermann, the Director of Community Service Project Division, who secured the donation of 30 gallons of paint

and personally hosted the lunch for the volunteers; as well as Melody St. John and Marjorie Heller for their work and dedication

to get this program together.

In 2005, the Rotary Club of Los Angeles wanted to see the generous legacy gift from LA5 member Bob Gunzell used to provide

foster youth with grants of up to $1000 to provide for needs for which there was no other funding available to them. With the

Los Angeles County Dependency Court and the Department of Children and Family services as partners, the Children’s Court

Committee began by letting social workers, judges, attorneys and advocates know about the work of LA5 and our club’s desire

to provide some measure of help, and assurance that we care about these children.

Led by LA5’er Peggy York, the Committee quickly grew to 19 loyal and committed members. As the requests came in we

learned that all of these children have compelling stories of neglect and physical, sexual and/or psychological abuse. Many are

in the foster care system all of their young lives because there was no one willing or able to care for them. Many are separated

from their siblings, have physical and/or psychological health issues, have been transferred from school to school creating little

opportunity for academic success. We quickly learned that their needs are many and varied.

The Club has continued this practice since 2005 helping more than 250 children. We have funded medical and dental needs,

prom dresses and letterman jackets, music and art lessons, field trips and sports gear, camps and college necessities. We have

even helped to fund a funeral. God bless the memory of Bob Gunzel. His legacy gift has brought comfort and pleasure to
