Clubhouse Activities Assistant

Terisa grew up in Colorado and traveled all over  the US starting at age 13 when she moved to Texas to train with a high-level gymnastics coach. She returned to Florida to finish high school before heading out on the road again, training and performing as an acrobat/USA trampolinist/stunt

performer, traveling as far as Japan and Austria (each for 6 months). She moved back to Florida to work in the Indiana Jones Stunt Show at Disney’s MGM Studios which led to work at SeaWorld, Universal (IOA) and eventually Legoland. After having her son (now 13), she branched out into other types of work. She considers her son the greatest treasure and blessing of her life, and together they are avid movie goers and frequently visit the trampoline park. Terisa loves the energy at Monday Coffee … she says Mondays are actually enjoyable as opposed to dreaded. She enjoys  the resident interaction and the beautiful scenery at Lake Ashton. Lake Ashton II (Winter Haven) CDD News By Mary Bosman, LAIICDD Community Director

The LA II (WH) CDD Board of Supervisors approved the

refinishing of the outdoor furniture, so needed repairs and painting of the older outside furniture has been

taking place over the summer. Sandblasting and repainting has been done in stages so that chairs and tables were always available. Other capital projects approved include the minor Kitchen upgrade making it more user friendly, and landscaping for the new parking lot north of the HFC. The LAIICDD Board is very committed to not spending more than is needed and every effort is considered carefully. LCIICDD residents will not get an increase in their yearly Operations and Maintenance fees (O&Ms).

The trees on Ashton Boulevard have been stricken with the infamous Texas Phoenix palm decline (TPPD) that many palms in Central Florida have contracted. Many of the Canary Island date palms (same family of trees) have been removed from residents’ landscapes for the same reason. There is no known cure currently, and preventive measures have not been recommended as it is extremely cost prohibitive and without any significant success rates. The Board will discuss various tree replacement types (not from

the same family of trees to prevent reinfection) at the board meeting August 10.

The Pickleball Association has purchased nets for the new Pickleball courts and they should be installed by publication date for this newsletter. Kudos to that hard-working group that has funded their new benches, nets and courts through much time and hard work by members. Evolve Landscaping will be completing the landscaping and irrigation around the new parking lot north of the HFC.

All HFC Fitness Instructors have been re-tested and their certifications are up to date in order to continue providing Lake Ashton residents with quality fitness information and classes. If you are new to Lake Ashton, stop into the HFC to see what class or classes might be fun and appropriate for your current level of fitness.

Attention New Residents By Christine Wells and Mary Bosman, Lake Ashton Community Directors

New residents to Lake Ashton are invited to visit the Clubhouse or HFC Activities Desks to sign up for the next New Resident Orientation and New Resident Social (listed at left), and get an informal introduction to Lake Ashton. These events will allow you to meet other new residents and ask questions about Lake Ashton, and the helpful information provided at both Activities Desks will help make your transition to Lake Ashton living an easier one!

Help Keep Lake Ashton Secure By Christine Wells, LACDD Community Director

Anyone using Lake Ashton amenities should have a valid Lake Ashton Resident Photo Identification card or facilities Guest Pass, available at the Clubhouse Activities Desk during the hours listed at left. This identification policy helps staff and security officers ensure that the amenities are safeguarded and being used as intended. If staff or security ask for identification, it is not to harass residents, but is intended to keep the neighborhood secure. Resident Photo Identification cards are the property of Lake Ashton Community Development District and should be surrendered if moving from the community. Residents must bring at least one adult guest to register, and renters must have a copy of their rental agreement.

HFC Activities Office News By Karen Van Kirk, HFC Activities Office Manager

Winter Haven HOA Liaison Meeting will now be held the first Monday of each month at 2:30 p.m. This HOA Meeting will relocate to the Craft Room at the Health and Fitness Center.

LA (LW) Architectural Review Committee By Keith Stevens

The Homeowners Association (HOA) through its Architectural Review Committee (ARC) has the responsibility to help preserve and promote Lake Ashton property values. Their job is to encourage and when necessary enforce the Covenants and Conditions of the community governing documents. They are asking for your help to do that.

To protect all owners and residents the HOA has directed its ARC to compel compliance with all of the governing documents. It may be that past ARC’s have not consistently and uniformly enforced the governing documents. You should be aware that the HOA has directed its current ARC to fully enforce all of the governing documents. Those documents include the ARC rules and guidelines and the ARC needs your help to do that.

Please understand that from this time forward you cannot rely on past infractions or violations to justify future violations. Further, you should not rely on past inaction by

either the ARC or the HOA to support future violations. Violations that in the past may have been overlooked may now be enforced. The HOA asks that you review the governing documents and make sure that changes on your property have been approved by the ARC.

The governing documents require all changes at your property to receive written prior approval by the ARC. To do so an ARC request form must be filled out. The form is available online at ashtonliving.net. Please fill out that request form for changes you plan to make. Part of your request must be a map of your property showing the location of the planned project. The map must also show the relationship and distances to property lines and other features on your property. This detail protects you and allows the ARC to determine that your project meets the governing documents requirements.

Your HOA and its ARC have a fiduciary responsibility to each of the Lake Ashton homeowners, and they are asking for your help and understanding they move forward from this point.

LA (LW) HOA Corner - By the Numbers By Murray Zacharia   Did you know that you're 307 times more likely to be bitten by a venomous snake than by a shark? A recent study from the Community Associations Institute reports that there are over 342,000 common-interest communities (HOAs are 51-55% of that number) in the U.S., representing 26.3 million housing units, and 69 million residents (21.3% of the 2016 U.S. population). Florida leads all other states with 47,900 associations representing 9,664,000 residents. Lake Ashton has 962 housing units with about 1725 full-time and seasonal residents.30-40% of community associations are self-managed (like Lake Ashton). Approximately 70% of all HOAs are completely self-managed by volunteers. Community associations use 2,360,000 board and committee members, who provide 80 million hours of service with a $1.93 billion estimated value of time provided.

As an LA HOA Board of Directors member what exactly would you do? Essentially, the board functions as the decision-making authority with legal and fiduciary duty to manage the association's affairs. While on the board, you should be communicating with homeowners, developing enforceable rules, understanding our governing documents, approving the annual budget and expenditures of funds, and more. The Annual Meeting and election of directors occurs in February 2019, just six months away. It's not too early to think positively about seeking one of the open positions that will be on the ballot. A word of caution – stay clear of venomous snakes and sharks.

Neighborhood Watch By Fay Wood, NW Chief

Traffic Tickets and Cell Phones — Information from Florida Highway Patrol One of the biggest causes

of accidents in Florida is distracted drivers. Talking on a cell phone is not illegal in Florida but it does distract you from driving and is a cause of thousands of car accidents a year in Florida. In 2017 there were over 3,700 accidents attributed to drivers distracted by cell phone

conversations. • If talking on your cell phone is going to distract you,

don't use it while driving. • If you suddenly need to make a call, pull over and stop

your car as soon as you can. • If you are expecting calls or know that you will be

placing calls while you are behind the wheel, make preparations. Don't take notes or look up numbers while driving. Keep your eyes on the road. Use speed dial if possible.

• Limit conversation. Don’t engage in stressful or emotional conversations that may distract you from your primary task — driving your car!

• You should not talk on the cell phone during hazardous driving conditions such as heavy traffic or severe weather.

If you must use your cell phone while driving, use a hands-free device if possible, and try to reserve your phone usage for emergencies or important calls. Even though talking on a cell phone while driving is legal in Florida, it can result in a traffic ticket if you break a road rule or cause an accident.

Texting while driving in Florida is illegal. It is enforced as a secondary offense, which means that you cannot be pulled over for texting while driving. If you are pulled over for another offense such as speeding, an expired license plate, or any other reason, you can be cited for texting while driving. Texting while driving can result in three points on your license. Two points are added to the primary offense (e.g.speeding) if texting occurred in a school zone, and six points are added if the texting offense resulted in a crash. Don’t text and drive, ever! It can wait.

Citizens Assisted Patrol (CAP) By Stan Baron

According to the National Weather Service, Florida is the lightning capital of the country. There were already several injuries in June right here in Central Florida.

When lightning is forecast or near and thunder is heard, DO: • Go inside and stay inside a sturdy house, building, or car

with a roof. • Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after you hear thunder

for the last time.

DON’T: • Try to hide in a dugout, shed, pavilion or other small

structure. • Use or touch electronics, outlets, corded phones or

windows. • Go under or near a tall tree, metal pole or object. • Swim or be near water.

CAP and Neighborhood Watch are the eyes and ears of Lake Ashton. They are not law enforcement but observe and report only. They do not carry a gun or taser; they use a cell phone if they see something suspicious or help is needed. CAP is made up of men and women volunteers who reside in Lake Ashton, year round or seasonally. Last year CAP had over 3,500 patrol hours.

If you can find the time and would like to join, your help is always needed! For more information, contact Mike Weissberg (863.324.3541) or Stan Baron (863.229.5269). Applications are available at the HFC and Clubhouse Activities Desks or in the patrol cars.

D R I V E R S A F E T Y R E M I N D E R S

All vehicles, including golf carts, must obey all stop signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout Lake Ashton. Drivers, please keep an eye out for pedestrians at all times. Obeying posted speed limit and traffic signs can help avert a potential tragedy. Remember, golf carts may not be operated on public roads or streets by any person under the age of 14.  Adults should not place young children on their laps between them and the steering wheel as this creates a hazardous condition for the children in the case of a panic stop or accidents.

Lake Ashton Ladies Golf Association (LALGA) By Linda Zacharia

In less than four months numerous new USGA sanctioned rules will go into effect (January 1,

2019). For instance, there are new rules for: (1) playing and scoring when out of bounds; (2) time spent looking for a lost ball; (3) procedure for dropping a ball; (4) when it's okay to leave the flagstick in the hole, just to name a few. Familiarize yourself with these new rules by going to the USGA website (USGA.org). Be prepared.

Chip-ins will be counted in all league games unless otherwise designated.

The LALGA Board meeting for August has been cancelled due to lack of a required quorum. Several of the Board members will be on vacation. The next meeting will be held on Monday, September 10, at 10 a.m. in the Clubhouse Conference Room. All LALGA members are invited to attend.

If you would like information about the LA Niners and how to participate, call Vice President Sheri Merritt at 863.949.4109. Sheri will be happy to answer your questions and welcome

you into a fun group with great gals. Looking forward to making new friends.

The theme for the August potluck is “The Dog Days of Summer,” and it begins at 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 12. Cost is $2/person, payable at the door, and bring a dish to share to serve eight. August is the hottest month of the year, so think cool! Sign up at either Activities Desk or on ashtonliving.net. You are invited to bring your own special toppings like nuts, whipped cream, bananas, chocolate syrup, maraschino cherries, cookies, etc.

Special Message from the New Facilitator: Special thanks should be given to Kerry Giebler for her dedication as Community Potluck facilitator for the past several years. Her leadership will be sorely missed, but hopefully she will make an appearance from time to time! Great thanks also goes to Bertha Rich and Merisa Velebir, who have been part of the potluck team and have stayed the course and lent helping hands to this new facilitator. There were several unnamed others who jumped right in and assisted, and they should be thanked as well. More than 30 people (including 10 new residents of Lake Ashton) enjoyed brunch at the July dinner.

I look forward to working on behalf of the residents of Ashton Lake as we continue the tradition of the Community Pot Luck Dinners. Suggestions for themes are more than welcome. We are also looking for entertainment or special speakers. If you have any questions, you may reach me (Louise Crespin) by email ([email protected]) or phone (863.332.9222).

Retired Old Men Eating Out (ROMEO) By John Velebir

The heat and humidity that Central Florida is famous for is here, and most all but full-

time residents have "flown the coop" to cooler parts of North America. Those who remain in many cases find that

their neighborhood is populated by only a few and they wonder what they will do with their time during the summer months.

The ROMEO Group has a suggestion for the men; come to breakfast at the Eagle’s Nest Tuesday mornings at 8. If your pals are away, you'll find new friends and camaraderie amongst those enjoying an excellent buffet prepared by the consummate host, Vickie Moore.

Dinners for members and wives about every four weeks is an additional benefit resulting in the meeting new friends. There are no fees or dues, only a commitment to attend a minimum of one breakfast a month while in residence. If you would like more information, please contact summer facilitator John Velebir by phone at 863.662.4811 or email at [email protected]. Welcome aboard, and enjoy the experience!

Dehydration, Heat Exhaustion, and Heatstroke By Mary Bosman, LAIICDD Community Director

Summer brings on hot temperatures and humid weather. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are each a type of heat-related illness. Heat exhaustion is the most common and often occurs when people work or play in a hot, humid environment and body fluids are lost through sweating. This can cause the body to overheat and become dehydrated.

The elderly and children under 5 years of age are at higher risk for developing heat exhaustion. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist to find out if your medications (diuretics, sedatives, and stimulants) may make you more susceptible. Dogs and cats also need adequate precautions (shade, fluids) to avoid heat exhaustion.

Various drinks are available at grocery and pharmacies to help prevent and treat heat exhaustion. They contain electrolytes and are not harmful to you even if you do not have heat exhaustion. One has formerly been used primarily for sick children, but it has recently been proven to be one of the most effective drinks for adults suffering from dehydration. Alcohol dehydrates the body!

Heat stroke (also called heatstroke or sunstroke) is a life-threatening medical condition. It usually develops because of untreated heat exhaustion. The body's cooling system, which is controlled by the brain, stops working and the internal body temperature rises to the point at which brain damage or damage to other internal organs may result. Heat stroke can occur suddenly, without any symptoms of heat exhaustion. If a person is experiencing any symptoms of heat exhaustion or  heat stroke, get medical care immediately. Any delay could be fatal. The HFC Activities Desk has free professional charts available for quick reference so you know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke and what to do for both.

— Mary Bosman has completed a post-graduate Advanced Gerontology program from UW-LaCrosse in 2001 as part of her continuing education when she worked in a nursing home. She is also a Certified Dementia Care Specialist, also from UW-LaCrosse.

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
