Emotions fly high

A tiny mountain town located in the Valdigne, the most western part of the Aosta Valley, La Thuile (1.441 m) is a tourist resort that can conjugate the exigences of those who love active holidays and the snow together with those who look for relax and contemplative moments. A famous destination that is able to astonish gluttons looking for curiosities or traditions linked to food and wine as well. A true reference point for skiing, the 2018-2019 winter season in La Thuile will open with an important news that will bring the highest point of the Espace San Bernardo, the Italian and French resort linking La Thuile to La Rosière, at 2.800 m. It is the amplification of the ski area with two modern chairlifts that will serve five new red ski slopes in the area of Mont Valaisan. But there is another main event which will take place in La Thuile: the Telemark World Cup on 20th and 21st January 2019. This stunning competition will take place on the famous n. 3 – Franco Berthod ski slope, which in 2016 hosted the Fis Ladies Ski World Cup (downhill and SuperG races).

The luxury of simplicity Places that make your heart skip a beat, nature with a spontaneous, wild and disarming beauty. Imposing and dizzy peaks, which are basically true icons for climbers. His majesty the Mont-Blanc constantly standing out. The glares of the Rutor glacier that severely watches over the wide valley. Snow, which is the true protagonist of the long winter seasons, the challenging ski slopes which hosted the Ski World Cup. Living and tangible traditions that didn’t give in to modernity. The millenary history is preserved under a thick blanket of snow at the Little Saint Bernard Pass. A kind of culture that lay dormant through the centuries, which is able to camouflage, appear again and offer experiences which a high degree of emotion. This is La Thuile. #LaThuile

The Espace San Bernardo is a wide international ski resort, one of the rare resorts on the Alps where you will be able to ski between two nations (Italy and France). In addition, thanks to its microclimate, it offers to snow lovers the chance of skiing during the whole winter season. A true reference point for ski and wide space lovers, the Espace San Bernardo links the Italian mountainside of La Thuile to the French one of La Rosière. A true frontier paradise which every winter welcomes skiers coming from all over the world by offering 152 km of certified ski slopes both for beginners and experts, by alternating easy, medium or hard pistes.

Today La Thuile is considered one of the major international players in terms of skiing: its slopes charmed famous athletes and hosted some important competitions, such as the Ladies Ski World Cup in 2016 (two downhill and one SuperG races) and the Telemark World Cup in 2017, an event which will be back in La Thuile on 20th and 21st January 2019.

The Espace San Bernardo international resort

Ski areaThe perfect quality of the snow in La Thuile is guaranteed thanks to the unremitting work of the pisteurs (people preparing the ski slopes everyday), the snowmobiles and the 400 canons for artificial snow.

The Espace San Bernardo also owns 2 grounds for slalom, 2 snowparks, 1 slope for boarder cross, 2 fun cross areas, 1 area for secured free ride, 1 area for snowkite which is easily joinable thanks to the ski facilities and 2 playgrounds for kids to satisfy every kind of amusement.

To reach the ski slopes from the town centre (1.441 m) you only need a couple of minutes thanks to the rapid Doppio Mono Cavo (DMC) gondola of the Funivie Piccolo San Bernardo. This structure can bring up to Les Suches (2.200 m) more than 3.000 people per hour.

Since 2017 this ski facility owns the first Ski Sauna, a cabin which was covered with wood and equipped as if it was a true sauna. Here scents are gently diffused to ideally hug skiers. The structure was realised together with the Pré-Saint-Didier Thermal Bath (QC Terme group).

To reach Les Suches people can also use the Bosco Express four-place chairlift, which departs from the Ski School in the centre of the town.

The 2018/2019 winter season owns a special news: the expansion of the ESPACE SAN BERNARDO ski resort thanks to the opening of two new six-place, detachable chairlifts in the French area of Mont Valaisan. MOULINS EXPRESS and MONT-VALAISAN EXPRESS are the innovative ski facilities that will bring the highest point of the resort at 2.800 metres. These chairlifts, reachable in just a couple of minutes from the area of Belvedere (Italian side), will serve 5 new red ski slopes and, thus, will offer an exceptional ski resort to powder lovers. From next winter on, the Espace San Bernardo ski resort will offer 85 ski slopes, a unique international skipass and 39 modern and rapid ski facilities, having a total capacity of 63.200 people per hour. All this guarantees fantastic and no-stop days on the snow, without even a minute of queuing.

NEWS FOR THE 2018/2019 WINTER SEASON

La Thuile, a town with a green soul

The special environment in which La Thuile is immersed, together with its wild and unpolluted beauty only ask to be respected. To preserve these places and contribute to the protection of our planet the FUNIVIE PICCOLO SAN BERNARDO society, the one that runs the ski facilities in La Thuile, adopted an eco-friendly approach. It is a quite complex project which focused on the rationalisation of hydrical and energetic resources thanks to the use of a huge catch basin to realise artificial snow, two turbines hydrically run to produce electrical energy and a photovoltaic installation set in the hamlet of Les Suches. In confirmation of this sustainable engagement, the FUNIVIE PICCOLO SAN BERNARDO obtained the CVA (Compagnia Valdostana delle Acque) certification which attests the 100% renewable origin of the electric energy supplied in 2017.

The Telemark World Cup will take place in La Thuile for the second time on 20th and 21st January 2019 and the town will be the only Italian destination inserted in the FIS calendar. Through the assignment of the contests of the Telemark World Cup to La Thuile, the FIS Commission rewarded the high level of the ski slopes, but also the quality of the provided services and the standards of the accommodation structures available in town. The ability of organizing big collateral events is another major element which was considered by the FIS Commission. La Thuile confirms that the Organizative Commission which worked for the FIS LADIES SKI WORLD CUP of 2016 will run this important event and, thus, a series of major events will be organized during the days of the Telemark World Cup.

MAIN EVENTS

La ThuileMontagna da vivere

Improve your technique The La Thuile Ski School, established in 1964 by Delfino Blanchet, offers avant-guard methods to improve your technique, always by keeping in mind your safety. All the ski instructors, who are specialised in various disciplines, speak at least one foreign language. They are available for individual or group lessons of alpine skiing, freeride, telemark, carving, snowboard and cross-country skiing. The ski instructors and the Alpine guides belonging to the school can organise snowshoe hikes, ice-climbing sessions, ski-tourism tours and eliski experiences.

For kids and young people, a ski lesson is definitely fun thanks to the Tre9 Junior, a special package which is conceived for those who already have a fairly good ski ability and who frequent La Thuile during the whole winter season. A year-long, non-competitive course with lessons every weekend, intensive trainings during the Christmas and Carnival holidays and some tours. The Tre9 project is also enriched by didactic moments about signs and rescue on the slopes, training lessons and theory lessons with video analysis. At the end of the winter season all the participants to the Tre9 course will take part to a regional contest.

The extraordinary natural contest of La Thuile makes every sport practice

joyful, both for the body and the soul, no matter the chosen discipline. Here in La Thuile you can live and share true, unforgettable emotions.

SNOWKITE The winds, a kite, a pair of skis or a snowboard: strong emotions guaranteed thanks to snowkiting.

The snowkite area in La Thuile is right at the Little Saint Bernard Pass (2,188

m), at the border with France. A wide area, which is easily joinable thanks to

the ski facilities that is dominated by the imposing Mont-Blanc. Here the winds, the

fundamental elements to practice this sport, constantly blow.

ELISKI Fly over the highest peaks of Europe and fill your eyes with the beauty of unique sceneries. A fly in helicopter over the highest peaks of Europe and then the complete freedom of skiing in fresh snow. Unforgettable emotions can be lived thanks to eliskiing in La Thuile, in a wide area which includes PointeLechaud, Monte Miravidi, Mont Ouille, il Mont Freduaz, Becca Bianca and Testa del Rutor. Skiers can be picked up in various points, both on the Italian and in the French territory. This activity, that can be practiced from 1st January to

Snow for everyone15th May, can be scheduled with a ski instructor or an Alpine guide only and after having carefully considered both the abilities of the participants and the weather conditions to assure and guarantee their safety. www.zerovertigo.itwww.guidemontebianco.it

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIINGClose to the town centre of La Thuile, in the hamlet called Arly, there are 3 circuits of different lengths which are freely accessible. These routes go through snowy areas and silent woods. The three routes are 1, 3 and 7 km long. In the area of Arpy (1,700 m), just a couple of km from the Colle San Carlo, in a wonderful area surrounded by larches and firs, there are also 4 other routes, whose lengths vary from 3 to 7,5 km.

SKI TOURISM A discipline that truly consolidates the relationship between man and mountain, ski tourism has recently grown quite a lot. Accompanied by an

Alpine Guide, ski tourism lovers will have the chance of discovering some stunning corners

of La Thuile and of enjoying some spots that offer breath-taking views. A route

that cannot be missed is the one that starts from Pont Serrand (1,609 m)

and arrives in Combe Varin (2,620 m), a 4-hour trip which is not so though; another good option is the itinerary that links La Thuile to the Little Saint Bernard Pass, a 13-km route where there are various tracks of apparently flat ground and some nice views over the Mont-Blanc or the Aiguille de Trélatête; another, harder, path is the one that goes

from La Joux (1,494 m) to Mont Valaisan (2,891 m): to come back

skiers will have the chance of skiing through some suggestive woods.

SNOWSHOES Snowshoeing means to find your own rhythm and live the beauty of mountains by discovering the ancient way of moving on the snow. But snowshoeing also means to be immersed in the mystery of the woods, to float on the snow, to reach small and tiny hamlets and to feel new emotions after every step. From La Thuile and from the small hamlets of Pétosan, Les Granges, La Joux, Buic and Villaret start various itineraries that vary in length and difficulty: some of them are just relaxing, some others are a bit more challenging. Their length varies from 1 to 4 hours and, through them, you can reach some wonderful panoramic points and enjoy unpolluted sceneries. An unmissable track is the one that follows the ancient mine paths to reach the entrances of the galleries and the village formerly inhabited by miners. The Alpine Guides organise some unforgettable, guided tours along this path. www.zerovertigo.itwww.guidemontebianco.it

INDOOR CLIMBINGUp and Down Boulder Point La Thuile is boulder indoor point suitable for everyone: experts, lovers and beginners. This indoor climbing wall is in La Piramide sport centre and is equipped with 40 blocks and 15 circuits with different levels of difficulty (grey, white, green, blue, yellow, red). It was realised with the latest materials and by paying attention to safety. Up and Down Boulder Point Tel. + 39 340 1035130 - + 39 340 6231187

Gourmet mountains

The brightness of snow and the magnificence of the surrounding mountains are the perfect setting for some moments of relax. Whether you chose a restaurant in the town centre, a chalet on the ski slopes, a cafeteria or one of the wellness areas of the hotel or the Thermal Bath of Pré-Saint-Didier, your eyes, your heart and your soul will be filled with wellness and taste.

OFF-PISTE TEMPTATIONSA short break, after or during a descent, to find your balance again, to get your breath back and to keep on having fun on the ski slopes or to end with a flourish – and tastiness! – a perfect day on the snow. This is après-skiing in La Thuile. You can try it in some cafés or in the pubs of the town. Among the most appetizing possibilities in terms of food and wine you can experiment tasty aperitifs and the ritual of drinking ‘à la ronde’ in the Coppa dell’amicizia, a special and typical Valdôtain

container where you can taste the famous Valdôtain coffee (coffee with spirits and spices). You will have to pass it though to your companions without putting it down. But off-piste temptations can be very sweet too and thus become some truly greedy and fulfilling moments, as those which are offered by cafés and confectioner’s shops in town. They do propose some sweet delicacies which are able to excite your taste buds. Among the best specialities of the town you can find the patented Tometta, which is produced by Chocolat confectioner’s shop: 350 grams of true pleasure, a perfect union between milk chocolate, gianduja and IGP Piemonte hazelnuts. The name of this dessert does come from the name “toma”, the typical Alpine cheese which is produced in high pastures. Thanks to the Tometta La Thuile was rewarded with the title of Città del Cioccolato (Chocolate City).

But there is also the Torta 1.441 by La Crémerie, a smooth chocolate sponge cake filled in with a chocolate mousse, a special hymn to the ‘tastes’ and to the altitude of La Thuile, from which the name comes. And, in addition, some exquisite chocolates, some delicious home-made ice-creams and the unmissable fondue au chocolat (melted chocolate), served with fresh fruits.

La Thuile is Città del Cioccolato - since 2009. This title was given to the town by Chococlub – here gluttons and those who have delicate palates can satisfy their desires with unusual delicacies and combinations.

Some confectioner’s shops, restaurants and cafés take pat to Cioccolando In Alta Quota - Eccellenze made in Italy, by proposing dishes with a unique taste by coupling sweetness and savoury food. Thanks to Cioccolando in Alta Quota you will have the chance of the discovering a new dimension, which includes the discovery of how to produce chocolate, how to create classic and international desserts and how to revisit some traditional recipe.

The shop taking part to the initiative expose the ‘Città del Cioccolato’ plate.

TASTE ROUTES Traditions, culture, tastes, love for the territory are wisely mixed to create a wide and diversified food and wine offer. Morsel after morsel the route excite all your taste buds thanks to all the restaurants both in town and on the ski slopes. You will have the chance of tasting the best local specialities, such as the Boudin – a Valdôtain kind of cold cut made of boiled potatoes, lard, beetroot, spices, natural flavourings and wine, the famous Fontina DOP cheese and the Motzetta, a kind of cold cut realised with dry meat of ox, chamois, deer or wild boar. It is usually cut in thin slices and eaten as a starter with rye bread. By keeping on proposing its best, traditional dishes, La Thuile also offers sumptuous dishes such as the famous polenta concia (thick maize porridge with cheese) with game, or some more sophisticated dishes in gourmet restaurants, where chefs will propose traditional dishes with a modern and creative touch.

Traditional flavours on the slopes and under the stars

The fire burning and the reflection of the Sun on the snow light up the chalets where you can have lunch or just rest during the long and funny days of ski.

15 chalets on the slopes, easily joinable through the ski facilities (some of them are accessible to non-skiers too) give the chance of bucking you up and enjoying some of the most beautiful views of the Alps, thanks to some open-air structures. The atmosphere is even more evocative when the sun sets. Three chalets on the ski slopes (Lo Riondet, Maison Carrel and Maison Blanche) propose the best specialities of the territory by following some ancient recipes. These three restaurants offer to their guests a transfer service (round trip) by snowmobile, but if you like you will also have the chance of coming down towards the town centre by ski, with torches in your hands. Emotions guaranteed!

La ThuileMontagna da vivereHaving a stroll in La Thuile

By walking in the Capoluogo, the town centre of La Thuile, in via Deber-nard, you will find the church of S. Nicola, whose bell tower stands out against the roofs of the surrounding houses. Ancient place of worship and true, representative element of the history of La Thuile, its existence is certified by a document dating back to XII century, when the bishop of Aosta, Bosone II, gave the church of S. Nicola and the Hospice of the Little Saint Bernard to the convent of Saint Gilles of Verrès. This parish, which from 1466 on directly depended from the bishop of Aosta, was repeatedly sacked, until the fire set by the French troops in 1700 which completely destroyed the building. The actual church, which was built in 1796, has a unique nave, two lateral apses and a presbytery. Inside, some valuable pain-tings by Ettore Mazzini (realised in 1945) illustrate the Crucifixion, a series of Saints, some episodes of the life of S. Nicola and the Virgin. Particularly interesting the wood crucifix of the triumphal arch, which was miraculously saved by the sack of the French troops. The tabernacle dates back to thee XVIII century and comes from an altar of the Saint Catherine’s convent of Aosta. The bell tower dates back to 1400, whereas the steeple to the XVIII century.

Sacred artThe small hamlets of La Thuile are rich is gracious chapels, which were built between the XVII and the XIX century. Close to the church of S. Nicola there is the Chapel of San Rocco , the patron of the infective sicks, built in 1630 after a terrible plague epidemy. In the heart of the hamlet of Moulin there is the small chapel of Sant’Anna (1667). The road towards the Colle San Carlo leads then to the hamlet of Thovex, where you can find the chapel of the hamlet Clou dedicated to San Lorenzo, built in 1650, set to fire by the French troops in 1794 and then rebuilt. The small chapel of Santa Lucia, on whose façade there is a painting representing Saint Défendent wearing warrior cloths, is in the hamlet of Buic and dates back to the beginning of the XIX century. In the area of Entrèves, the wonderful chapel of Santa Barbara – founded in 1653 and restored in 2011 thanks to the intervention of the Italian alpine troops – still has a statue of the Saint and one of Saint Joseph on its wooden altar. The chapel of the Petite Golette is a tiny

Part of the European projects ‘La culture du geste’ and ‘Parcours culturel des portes du Petit-Saint-Bernard’, after some long researches and studies to valorise the patrimony of the Berton brothers, the Maison-Musée Berton was restored by the La Thuile municipality. The building now hosts some local handicrafts, pieces of furniture and precious objects which were collected by the Berton brothers through the years.
