EditorialPolo keeps going. It carries on relentlessly, but without rushing, delivering excitement all over the world. Polo is now played everywhere on the planet, which is no small thing.

The sport keeps going and is moving at the speed of light, or rather, at the speed of the polo ball.

The United States, England and Argentina are the locations that the polo world is currently focussing on, as will be the case of France and Spain within a few weeks. And this is just the most prominent venues on the world circuit.

But the rest, albeit lower in handicap or category, are by no means ex-cluded. On the contrary; it is in countries like Italy, Holland, Austria, Ger-many and Belgium in Europe, like Brazil and Chile in South America, and like India, Pakistan and Singapore in Asia, to name just a few, where huge strides are being made in the growth and development of polo.

At this diffi cult time for all, polo is enjoying good health, and what better sign than the participation of twenty, yes, twenty teams in the British Open, currently being held at the Cowdray Park grounds in England.

Polo keeps goings, the ball keeps rolling and La Bocha by Snoopy Polo are also riding at full tilt. You’re holding the second edition of the year in your hands, with which immerse yourself in polo with every page.

El polo no se detiene. Sigue sin pausa, pero sin prisa, regalando emociones a lo largo y ancho del planeta. En cualquier punto del globo terráqueo en ese mo-mento se está jugando al polo y eso no es un dato menor.

Es que el polo no para y se mueve a la velocidad de la luz, o mejor dicho, de la bocha.

Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Argentina, puntos de referencia del polo mundial es-tán en este momento en el foco de atención del “mundo polo”, como en pocas semanas lo estarán España y Francia. Y ello por citar a las sedes más destaca-das del circuito mundial.

Pero no por menos importante en handicap o categoría el resto queda excluido. Por el contrario, es en países europeos como Italia, Holanda, Austria, Alemania o Bélgica, o sudamericanos como Brasil y Chile y asiáticos como India, Pakistán, Singapur, por citar sólo algunos ejemplos, es donde están empujando, y con fuerza, para que el crecimiento y desarrollo del polo sea cada vez mayor.

En estos tiempos tan difíciles para todos el polo goza de buena salud y qué mejor señal que la participación de 20, sí 20, equipos en el Abierto Británico que se está llevando a cabo en las canchas de Cowdray Park Polo en Inglaterra.

El polo no para, la bocha sigue rodando y a toda velocidad también cabalga La Bocha by Snoopy Polo. En sus manos tiene para disfrutar la segunda edición del año y lo va a hacer respirando polo en cada una de sus páginas.

The game was very evenly matched with the teams taking turns as leaders on the scoreboard.For the perfect end to the deciding encounter, the sides reached the last chukka level on nine goals each. The fi rst team to score was Les Lions, with a Sebastián Merlos goal that put them 10-9 ahead, but once again the remarkable fi gure of Cambiaso appeared and with three goals, one of them

a 60-yard penalty, he turned the score round and brought victory for Dubai by 12 goals to 10.With this title, Cambiaso, who had just won the US Triple Crown, earned his seventh Queen’s Cup, the second most important tournament on the British circuit, having lifted it in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2010. l inicio del partido marcó lo que sería el desarrollo de la final, mucha movilidad, desplazamientos coordinados y ataques alternados con las duplas Cambiaso- Mac

Donough en Dubai y Sebastián y Agustín Merlos en Les Lions II.El talento de estos cuatro calificados polistas permitió ver grandes acciones y goles en un trámite que salvo la ventaja de dos goles que logró Dubai en el segundo chukker (5-3) fue muy parejo y con alternancia en el dominio del marcador.Para ponerle un broche de oro al decisivo encuentro ambos equipos llegaron igualados a 9 al último chukker. Primero pegó Les Lions con un gol de Sebastián Merlos para el 10-9 pero, y una vez más, volvió a aparecer la enorme figura de Cambiaso que con tres goles, uno de ellos un penal de 60 yardas, dio vuelta el marcador y sentenció el triunfo en favor de Dubaie por 12 a 10.

Con esta conquista Cambiaso, que viene de ganar la Triple Corona de Estados Unidos, suma su séptima Queens Cup, el segundo torneo en relevancia en el Circuito Británico, el cual levantó en 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 y 2010. En lo que a la premiación se refiere, además de la prestigiosa Queens Cup que recibió la formación de Dubai de manos de la Reina Isabel, también fueron distinguidos el sudafricano Chris Mackenzie, de apenas 17 años, como el jugador más valioso de la final.Por su parte la yegua Cereain de Lucas Monteverde (h) y montada por Cambiaso mereció la consideración de mejor ejemplar como también la yegua pura sangre Menina de Agustín Merlos. Previamente a la Queens Cup, se puso en juego el decisivo encuentro por la subsidiaria The Harcourt Developments Cup y su ganador fue El Remanso al superar a Enigma 11 a 6. m

ith the adrenaline of victory and the doubts in-stilled by defeat, the fi rst stage of the British sea-son came to an end, with the fi nal of the Queen’s

Cup and the Dubai team as champions.This fi rst ‘chukka’ left us with two great teams, in every sense of the word: Dubai and La Bamba de Areco. They were great not just for their performances on the fi eld but also for what their players represent: 50 % of Argentina’s high-goal teams and the most successful sides of the last decade.If we add into this exquisite mix the outstanding work of J.C. Decaux or the strength and freshness provided by the youth of Rashid Albwardy, accompanied by third men who seemed to play above their handicaps, these assertions of greatness are understandable.Les Lions 2 also emerged as serious contenders thanks to the growing defensive expertise of Tincho Merlos and the solid leadership of his brother Sebastián, increasingly taking control at key moments on the fi eld.But the Queen’s Cup also left us with some incredible dou-ble acts such as those formed by the Heguy cousins: Marcos and Bauti on the one hand and Ruso and Nachi on the other. They were as brilliant as they were unpredictable when it came to displaying their potential.The third line of discussion is provided by pairings as oppos-ing as they are complementary, so that the best of one is what the other needs. Eduartido and Javier Novillo Astrada always know what the other is doing and punish your every mistake. Cup y con la formación de Dubai como campeón.Este primer “chukker” nos dejó dos grandes equipos, en el sentido total de la palabra: Dubai y La Bamba de Areco. Lo fueron no sólo por volumen de juego sino por lo que sus jugadores representan: el 50 % de los equipos argentinos de alto handicap y de mayor éxito de la ultima década.Si a esta exquisita ecuación le sumamos la tildada tarea de J.C Decaux o la fuerza y frescura que otorga la juventud de Rashid Albwardy, acompañados por terceros hombres que dan la impresión de jugar por encima de sus handicaps, es aceptable esta hipótesis.Les Lions 2 saca una luz también como “equipo” pues la vocación defensiva en crecimiento de Tincho Merlos y un liderazgo sólido de su hermano Sebastián, manejando cada vez más los momentos del partido, le dan ese crédito.Pero la Queens Cup también nos dejó binomios con una historia exquisita, como los que forman los primos Heguy, Marcos y Bauti por un lado y el Ruso y Nachi por otro. Tan ganadores como impredecibles a la hora de proyectar sus posibilidades.La tercera línea argumental, se la otorgamos a binomios tan opuestos como complementarios, por ello de que lo mejor de uno es lo que necesita el otro. Eduardito y Javier Novillo Astrada siempre saben a qué juegan y no te perdonan un error. Sebastián y Tincho Merlos para adelante son de lo mejor y de esta forma apelo a su delicadeza para sacar sus conclusiones.Mención especial a un Lyndon Lea más completo y a un Chris Mackenzie que emociona.La galera y el bastón de Juan Martín Nero, con un Santiago Chavanne mas maduro, hacen de Loro Piana, en cuanto entre en sintonía como nuevo equipo que es, una formación que dará que hablar. Bien es cierto que la variedad hace a la calidad y a El Remanso y Enigma, por la incuestionable calidad de sus jugadores, la continuidad de otros, la evolución de un Pelón Stirling aparentemente sin techo, se le extiende un crédito.Ni hablar de Sumaya, animadores de los últimos años.Talandracas cuenta con el conductor del último campeón, Luke Tomlinson, con Lucas Monteverde, un ganador nato y con un Guillermo Terrera al cual sólo a él le resta darse cuenta de su potencial.Las cenicientas del torneo han dado batalla y demostrado que tanto Pittaluga como Nico Pieres están pidiendo pista.A Lechuza Caracas lo deje para el fi nal, pues posee un jugador de paladar negro: “Su Majestad” Miguel Novillo Astrada. El éxito es un estado de ánimo, no existe campeón alguno que no surja de un grupo humano coaccionado, con una estrategia que

presupone un cómo, cuándo, dónde y por qué, y este punto abarca a todos.Estructuras sólidas, jugadores consagrados acostumbrados a ganar y manejar los momentos claves. Sólo el convencimiento y la pasión de sus oponentes podrán derrotarlos. Es una temporada donde gana el que menos se equivoca, no el que juega mejor. Esto hace hermoso a este deporte. Campana fi nal. Se desata la alegría. Un palenque explota de emoción y el desorden criollo sorprende una vez más al orden del primer mundo.

The Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup is the most important medium-goal tournament in the world, held since 1951 at the Guards Polo Club, and this year it involved eight teams with handicaps of up to sixteen goals. Los Locos’ victory in the final was preceded by a great deal of excitement. As the period got underway, Toccalino stretched the lead to three, but just as it looked like the final had been decided in favour of Los Locos, the reaction came from the quartet of Chris Mathias, Matt Loder, Roddy Williams and Tomás García del Río, who added suspense to the decider by coming within one goal of their rivals.But time ran out and La Clarita’s hopes of forcing the extra chukka were dashed. Los Locos breathed a sigh of relief and began to celebrate their victory in this prestigious competition.Los Locos reached the final after overcoming BHC Polo in the semi-finals by 10 goals to 8, while La Clarita knocked out Billingbear Park by 9 goals to 8 to earn a place in the decider.In the final of the subsidiary Mountbatten Cup, the Jaeger LeCoultre team overcame Lamrei by 9 goals to 6.During the prize ceremony presided over by Her Majest Queen Elizabeth II, Clarita’s Chris Mathias was named the best player in the final, while the mare Americana, ridden by Ignacio Toccalino, received the award for horse of the match.m

PubliThe Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup es el torneo de mediano handicap más importante del mundo, se desarrolla desde 1951 en Guards Polo Club y este año contó con la participación de ocho equipos de hasta 16 goles de handicap. El triunfo de Los Locos en la final llegó precedida de una gran emoción. La formación que encabezó Claire Tomlinson (considerada una de las mejores jugadoras de polo femenino del mundo), su hijo Mark, Ignacio Toccalino y George Gemmen tuvo el dominio del encuentro y llegó al decisivo chukker con una ventaja de dos goles (8-6).Iniciado dicho período Toccalino estiró la ventaja a tres y cuando parecía que la final quedaba sentenciada a favor de Los Locos llegó la reacción del cuarteto que integraron Chris Mathias, Matt Loder, Roddy Williams y Tomás García del Río para ponerle suspenso a la definición al quedar a tan sólo un gol de diferencia.El tiempo se agotó y con él las esperanzas de La Clarita de forzar un chukker suplementario. TheAl Habtoor Polo Challenge

This year the brothers Rashid and Mohammed Al Habtoor’s organisation, in addition to competing in the customary Al Habtoor Polo Challenge exhibition, held prior to the final of the tournament, also took part with a competitive team in the Royal Windsor.The team was led by Habtoor Al Habtoor (son of Mohammed and making his official debut in England leading a team at just eighteen years of age), the Englishman Ryan Pemble and the South Africans Leroux Hendrix and the up-and-coming Nachi Du Plesis.Although their results went against them (close defeats to La Clarita, 9-11, and Aravali, 5-6), Habtoor Polo’s first experience as a team in the Royal Windsor was positive.

Habtoor Al Habtoor, who has just played in the final of the Dubai Gold Cup, is continuing to improve his game and we will see him playing an active role in tournaments in England and the rest of Europe.

Polo ChallengeEste año la organización de los hermanos Rashid y Mohammed Al Habtoor además de disputar la tradicional exhibición The Al Habtoor Polo Challenge que se pone en juego previo a la final del torneo también formaron parte, con un competitivo equipo, de la Royal Windsor.

El equipo estuvo encabezado por Habtoor Al Habtoor (hijo de Mohammed y que hizo su presentación oficial en Ingla-terra al frente de una formación con apenas 18 años), el inglés Ryan Pemble y los sudafricanos Leroux Hendrix y el ascendente Nachi Du Plesis.

Si bien los resultados no acompañaron (ajustadas derrotas ante La Clarita 9-11 y Aravali 5-6) la primera experiencia de Habtoor Polo como equipo en la Royal Windsor fue positiva según contaron los propios protagonistas.

Exhibición de lujoLa edición 2010 de The Al Habtoor Polo Challenge contó con la participación estelar de los hermanos Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres.El atractivo desafío que disputan todos los años, previo a la final de la Royal Windsor Cup, los hermanos Rashid y Mohammed Al Habtoor tuvo este año el “lujo” de tener en los equipos participantes a los hermanos Pieres, 10 de handicap y figuras del polo mundial.Habtoor 1, equipo formado por Habtoor Al Habtoor, Mohammed Al Habtoor, Ryan Pemble y Facundo Pieres se quedó con la exhibición tras vencer 6,5 a 6 a la formación que integraron Rashid Al Habtoor, Tariq Al Habtoor, Guillermo Cuitiño y Gonzalo Pieres.Tanto los hermanos Pieres como la familia Al Habtoor y los profesionales Pemble y Cuitiño se brindaron al máximo para ofrecerle al público una exhibición de gran nivel de juego y emoción.Tras la misma Su Majestad la Reina Isabel II y Khalaf Al Habtoor, presidente de Al Habtoor Group, encabezaron la entrega de premios donde se distinguió a todos los participantes. m

With the Argentine Joaquín Pittaluga, the New Zealander John Paul Clarkin, the Mexican Ignacio González and the Englishman Spence MacCarthy, Emlor overcame their rivals, Talandracas, with the Argentines Lucas Monteverde (Jr) and Guillermo Terrera, the Englishman Luke Tomlinson and the Frenchman Edouard, by 12 goals to 10, to be crowned champions of the Prince of Wales Trophy, organised by the Royal County Berkshire Polo Club at its grounds.The final between the two sides was an intense and hard-fought contest. Emlor and Talandaracas took turns to score throughout much of the game, which had a very exciting finish that saw the ‘international’ team achieving victory.At the same venue, for the Subsidiary Cup, and in another match with superb individual performances, the Les Lions team, with the Argentine brothers Ignacio and Eduardo Heguy, Joachim Gottschalk and Jonny Good, defeated their opponents, The Telegraph, with Argentines Gastón Laulhé and Nicolás Pieres and Englishmen Max Charlton and George Meyrick, by 8 goals to 7 in a close final. The six teams unable to progress to the quarter-finals of the 50th Queen’s Cup took part in the Prince of Wales Trophy. m

n this space, much of world polo’s living history coexists with a renowned patron whose unconditional love of horses took him to compete in the sport’s high-goal tournaments.

Oussama Aboughazale, patron of Sumaya, Carlos Gracida and Milo Fernández Araújo, professionals with extensive experience and a great deal of success in the polo world, are the protagonists of the scene. They are accompanied by Tono Iturrate, the Sumaya polo manager, and Lucas James. They are following the progress of the match in question intently, but there is an air of friendliness, respect and professionalism.This is how polo is experienced in the Sumaya ‘world’ and La Bocha by Snoopy Polo had exclusive access.From a very young age Oussama Aboughazale discovered his great passion and what would be responsible for the story of Sumaya to go transcend borders and polo tournaments: horses.“My maternal grandfather had a very nice ground by the River Jordan, Palestine, with Arab horses for trekking in the countryside. There was one special horse, a black one, that was always tied to a tree and which we rode at just four years of age”, Oussama recalls.“I have loved horses since I was a child and I am in polo for my love of horses”, he adds.“First and foremost he’s a horse lover”, says Tono Iturrate, the Sumaya polo manager but more importantly Oussama’s right

hand man for many years. “It’s his great passion. I have known very few people in my life as passionate about horses has Oussama and he is very knowledgeable. He is a person who studies, reads and keeps up to date, so it’s fascinating talking to him about horses”, he adds. Polo had to wait some years before taking a place in Oussama Aboughazale’s life. It was in 1975 in Dubai, when he was 35 years old, that he first discovered this sport.“I was working in Dubai and alongside another twelve players we founded the Dubai Polo Club (now the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club), the first polo club in the country”, Aboughazale recalls.“I bought horses and that was where I started out in polo. We played on compacted sand; between chukkas a machine went over the ground to flatten it”.But it was in Chile that the story of Sumaya, initially under a different name, began.“Oussama arrived in Chile 30 years ago, for work, and he established himself there. I met him in a final at the San Cristóbal Polo Club. I beat him, but we became close friends, and that was when a very good relationship began, from which we created a team called UTC (United Trading Company), a fruit company that he set up in Chile. We managed to have some great players in Chile, including the Heguy brothers, Horacio, Marcos and Gonzalo”, Tono Iturrate explains.“At that time the 40-goal Chilean Open was played, a week

after the Argentine Open, and one year Oussama took the eight Heguys to play in an exhibition match a week after Indios Chapaleufú won in Palermo. In ten years with Oussama we won the most important tournaments in Chile””, he adds.With Aboughazale’s consent, Tono Iturrate left for other destinations and a quiet time in polo for the Palestinian patron began.

“At some point I was offered the chance to play for another patron and Oussama told me not to miss the opportunity. He kept playing with other people but became disillusioned with polo. They were weekend players and not such horse lovers, which is what he likes. On top of that, his nephew Ahmed, who played with him, went to study in the United States, and Oussama stopped playing for eight years”, says Iturrate.During the years in which Oussama was not playing polo, he devoted himself to horse racing and produced a mare, Wild Spirit, that won several Group 1 races in the United States and was one of the best in history, born at his ranch in Chile.“After a time, one day I called him and went to his house. We went to the stables and he got on a horse again. He was crying from the emotion of playing polo again”, Tono recalls.That was when the recent history of Sumaya began. The

organisation started to take shape and the immediate objective was to start playing in England. “It’s a place that he is very fond of and where he gets together with his family, because his nephews study in London”, Iturrate explains. “We have horses, we run our organisation. First to play practice matches and then one or two medium-goal tournaments”.The close relationship between Aboughazale and Carlos Gracida means that Sumaya is starting to make a name for itself in the high-goal competitions of the English season.“Sumaya is named after my mother. It was also the name of the first Islamic martyr, a black slave woman”, Aboughazale explains. The red and green of their shirt are the colours of his stud farm. With his base in Chile and the advice of the brothers Memo and Carlos Gracida, Sumaya is starting to establish itself in the high-goal game.“There is a great deal of investment in looking after the horses. I would venture to say that there is no other organisation in the world that looks after its horses like Sumaya”, Iturrate explains. “As far as horses are concerned, Oussama spares no expense and gives them the best, the best there is. Facilities, vets, food, grooms. He takes care of everything. We look after them in



the same way the best trainers of the United States do”, he adds. To do so, a big structure is needed, which in this cases comprises 30 people, between Chile and England, led by Tono Iturrate and the vet Fernando Mitchell. “It’s a structure with a large number of people; we have best two vets in England and we even bring in a chiropractor from the United States in case one is needed. Fernando, who is our vet and product manager, is with us throughout the year”, Iturrate says.Although Sumaya has not been playing in the high-goal season in England for long, the results have been very positive. “The key to these good results is primarily the planning that we do with professionals of the stature of Milo Fernández Aráujo and Carlos Gracida”, says Iturrate.

“Including young up-and-coming players, like Hilario Ulloa, who had a great season in England last year, and Lucas James this year, has also been important. At Sumaya we place a lot of trust in the players. There has to be a good vibe at all times and people must feel comfortable. All the players who have

played for Sumaya will be able to tell you about the good feeling that’s always present in this team. We’re all here to serve a sport and a patron who goes to great pains to make sure we all have a great time”.In this regard, Aboughazale stressed that “it’s a pleasure and a source of pride to have professionals like Milo Fernández Araujo and Carlos Gracida. They are like brothers to me”.

The family and future

The Sumaya organisation currently has around 300 polo horses and a total of a thousand including race horses.The base is in Chile but there are also horses in England, Dubai and Jordan. “Now we’re starting to sow seeds in England. We have eleven colts and twelve mares about to give birth in England”, says Iturrate. “Oussama brought a winning stallion in from the United States, Friendly Torpedo, which Carlos Gracida brought to England to cover the mares here.We also have a stud farm in Chile and we’re producing race horses. We are focusing on improving the ride and

producing better and better horses”.For Iturrate, one of Aboughazale’s main objectives is to have horses playing in the Argentine Polo Open.“I wouldn’t be surprised if the breeding started to go well and good horses came out of Sumaya, and Oussama got excited and put a team in the Argentine Open”, Tono revealed.The story of Sumaya began with Aboughazale but does not end with him. His nephews, who include the eldest Ahmed who played in the final of the Queen’s Cup in 2009, are also keeping up the family tradition.“I love my nephews and hope they will continue this tradition. The Sumaya legacy is in safe hands with them”, says a proud Aboughazale.In addition to Ahmed, his nephews Faisal and Karim are also playing in Dubai. “Two boys who will soon be playing for Sumaya too”, he adds.Finally Aboughazale admits that he would like Sumaya to be remembered in the polo world “with fondness. I have good relationships with everyone in polo and that’s the most important thing. For people to remember Oussama and Sumaya with affection”. m

los protagonista de dicha escena. Junto a ellos también están, Tono Iturrate, polo manager de Sumaya y Lucas James. Todos siguen atentamente las escenas de un partido de polo y en el aire se respira cordialidad, respeto y profesionalidad.Así se vive dentro del “mundo” Sumaya y La Bocha by Snoopy Polo tuvo acceso exclusivo a él.Desde muy pequeño Oussama Aboughazale conoció su gran pasión: el caballo, y a la postre responsable de que la historia de Sumaya trascienda fronteras y torneos en el mundo del polo. “Mi abuelo materno tenía un campo muy bonito al lado del Río Jordania, Palestina, con caballos árabes para andar en el campo. Había uno en especial, negro, que siempre estaba amarrado a un árbol y al cual montábamos con apenas cuatro años de edad”, recuerda Oussama.“Amo al caballo desde mi niñez y estoy en el polo por amor al caballo”, agrega.“Él es amante del caballo ante todo”, reafi rma Tono Iturrate, polo manager de Sumaya pero ante todo mano derecha de Aboughazale desde hace muchos años. “Es su gran pasión. He conocido a muy pocas personas en mi vida tan apasionadas de

los caballos como Oussama y sabe muchísimo. Es un tipo que estudia, lee y se actualiza mucho por lo cual es muy entretenido hablar de caballos con él”, agrega. El polo tuvo que esperar unos cuantos años para meterse de lleno en la vida de Oussama Aboughazale. Fue en el año 1975 en Dubai, y a la edad de 35 años, cuando conoció este deporte.“Estaba trabajando en Dubai y junto a otros doce jugadores fundamos el Dubai Polo Club (hoy Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club), el primer club de polo en este país”, recuerda Aboughazale.“Compré caballos y ahí comencé con el polo. Jugábamos sobre la arena compactada, entre chukker y chukker pasaba una máquina para aplanar la cancha”.Pero fue en Chile donde comienza, primero con un nombre distinto, la historia de Sumaya.“Oussama llega a Chile por trabajo, hace ya 30 años, y se establece allí. Lo conocí en una fi nal en el Polo de San Cristóbal. Le gané, pero nos hicimos muy amigos y a partir de ahí nació una muy buena relación de la cual creamos un equipo que se llamaba UTC (United Trading Company), una compañía de frutas que él creo en Chile. Logramos tener a grandes jugadores en Chile, entre ellos a los hermanos Heguy, Horacio, Marcos, Gonzalo”, explica Tono Iturrate.

Temporada inglesa de polo. En un amplio living de una hermosa fi nca cercana a Cowdray Park Polo en Midhurst conviven gran parte de la historia viva del polo mundial y un reconocido patrón cuyo amor incondicional al caballo lo llevó a competir en los torneos de alto handicap en este deporte.



“En esa época se jugaba el Abierto de Chile a 40 goles, una semana después del Abierto Argentino y un año Oussama se llevó a los ocho Heguy para jugar una exhibición, una semana después de que Indios Chapaleufú ganase en Palermo. Durante 10 años con Oussama ganamos los torneos más importantes de Chile”, agrega.Tras ello Tono Iturrate partió, con el consentimiento de Aboughazale, hacia otros destinos y con ello un parón en el polo por parte del patrón palestino.“En un momento me ofrecieron ir a jugar con otro patrón y Oussama me dijo que no desaproveche la oportunidad. El se quedó jugando con otra gente pero se desencantó del polo. Eran más jugadores de fin de semana y no tan aliados al caballo que es lo que le gusta a él. Como si fuera poco su sobrino Ahmed, que jugaba con él, se fue a estudiar a Estados Unidos y eso hizo que Oussama dejase de jugar durante 8 años”, cuenta Iturrate.Durante los años que Oussama no jugó al polo se dedicó a las carreras de caballos y sacó una yegua, Wild Spirit, ganadora de varios Grupo 1 en Estados Unidos, una de las mejores que ha habido en la historia y nacida en su campo en Chile.“Tras un tiempo, un día lo llamé y me fui para la casa. Nos fuimos a las caballerizas y se volvió a subir a un caballo. Se le caían las lágrimas de la emoción de volver a jugar al polo”, recuerda Tono.A partir de ahí comienza la historia reciente de Sumaya. La organización comienza a tomar forma y el objetivo inmediato fue comenzar a jugar en Inglaterra. “Es un lugar que le gusta mucho y donde se junta con su familia, ya que sus sobrinos estudian en Londres”, explica Iturrate. “Llevamos caballos, armamos nuestra organización. Primero para jugar prácticas y luego algún torneo de mediano handicap”.La estrecha relación de Aboughazale con Carlos Gracida hace que el nombre de Sumaya comience a sonar en el alto handicap de la temporada inglesa.

“El nombre Sumaya es por mi madre. Además fue el nombre del primer mártir del Islam, una mujer negra esclava”, explica Aboughazale. Los colores rojo y verde que luce en su camiseta son los de su haras.Con su base en Chile y el asesoramiento de los hermanos

Memo y Carlos Gracida, Sumaya comienza a armarse para jugar el alto handicap.“Existe una gran inversión en el cuidado del caballo. Me atrevo a decirte que no hay ninguna organización en el mundo que cuide como lo hace Sumaya”, explica Iturrate. “En lo que a caballos se refiere, Oussama no escatima en gastos y les brinda lo mejor, comodidades, veterinarios, comida, petiseros. Él se preocupa de todo. Cuidamos de la misma forma que el mejor preparador de Haras de Estados Unidos”, agrega. Para ello se necesita una gran estructura de la cual forman parte unas 30 personas, entre Chile e Inglaterra, lideradas por Tono Iturrate y el veterinario Fernando Mitchell. “Es una estructura de mucha gente, tenemos a los dos mejores veterinarios de Inglaterra e incluso traemos a un quiropráctico de Estados

Unidos en caso de que lo necesitemos. Fernando, que es nuestro veterinario y product manager, está con nosotros todo el año”,.Pese a que no son muchos los años que lleva Sumaya jugando en la temporada de alto handicap en Inglaterra, los resultados han sido muy positivos. “La clave de esos buenos resultados pasa principalmente por la planificación que hacemos con profesionales de la talla de Milo Fernández Aráujo y Carlos Gracida”, comenta Iturrate.“Incluir jugadores jóvenes en ascenso, como Hilario Ulloa, quien hizo una gran temporada en Inglaterra el año pasado, y Lucas James este año también ha sido importante. En Sumaya le damos mucha confianza a los jugadores. Siempre tiene que haber buena onda y que la gente se sienta cómoda. Todos los jugadores que pasaron por Sumaya te pueden confirmar la buena onda que siempre hay en este equipo. Aquí estamos todos para servir a un deporte y a un patrón que hace un gran esfuerzo para que nos diviértamos y pasemos bien”.Al respecto, Aboughazale recalca que “es un placer y un orgullo tener profesionales como Milo Fernández Araujo y Carlos Gracida. Son cómo hermanos para mí”.

El futuro y la familia

En la actualidad la organización Sumaya cuenta con unos 300 caballos de polo y un total de mil si se suman los de carrera.La base está en Chile pero también hay caballos en Inglaterra, Dubai y Jordania.

“Ahora estamos haciendo embriones en Inglaterra. Tenemos siete potrillos y doce yeguas madres por parir en Inglaterra”, comenta Iturrate. “Oussama tiene un padrillo ganador en Estados Unidos, Friendly Torpedo, que lo hizo Carlos Gracida y lo trajo para Inglaterra para cubrir yeguas acá.Tenemos también una cría en Chile y estamos sacando también caballos de carrera de su haras. Estamos enfocados a mejorar la monta, a tener cada vez mejores caballos”.Para Iturrate, uno de los principales objetivos de Aboughazale es tener caballos jugando el Abierto Argentino de Polo.“No me extrañaría que si la cría empieza a ir bien y salen buenos caballos de Sumaya, Oussama se entusiasme y ponga un equipo en el Abierto Argentino”, revela Tono.La historia de Sumaya empieza con Aboughazale pero no termina con él. Sus sobrinos, entre ellos el mayor Ahmed quien ya jugó la final de la Queens Cup 2009, también siguen la tradición familiar.“Amo a mis sobrinos y espero que ellos sigan esta tradición. El legado de Sumaya está asegurado con ellos”, dice orgulloso Aboughazale.Además de Ahmed también están jugando en Dubai sus sobrinos Faisal y Karim. “Dos chicos que en poco tiempo también estarán jugando en Sumaya”, agrega.Aboughazale confiesa finalmente que le gustaría que Sumaya sea recordado en el mundo del polo “con buenas memorias. Tengo buenas relaciones con todos en el polo y eso es lo más importante. Que la gente recuerde a Oussama y Sumaya con cariño”. m

The British Open Polo Championship

he 2010 competition has 20 participating teams so that the British Open, in addition to being Europe’s most important amateur tournament and one of

the most important in the world, also has the largest number of teams in the international polo season.The big favourites, new teams and others that are returning after several seasons’ absence to Cowdray make up this interesting competition involving an incredible 40 qualifying matches to be held before the deciding stages take place from July 10 to 18, the day of the grand final.“Twenty teams make it very special; we haven’t had so many for three years and this also makes it a special experience”, explains Chris Bethell, the Cowdray Park Polo manager.“It is also a big responsibility and you have to stay on top of

every detail so that it runs as smoothly as possible. It’s true that it’s a difficult time for everyone but the British Open is one of the most important tournaments in the world and everyone wants to play in it, which is why we are very happy to have 20 teams taking part”, he added.

The last three champions of the Gold Cup, La Bamba de Areco (2009), Loro Piana (2008) and Lechuza Caracas (2007), as well as Dubai, who were finalists last year and champions of the Queen´s Cup 2010, are the main contenders in the tournament but certainly not the only ones.Sumaya, Les Lions 1 and 2, Piaget, El Remanso, Zacara, Talandracas and Enigma also joined the list of great teams in the British Open.

In the year of its centenary celebrations, Cowdray Park Polo is enjoying a memorable season and, over the next few weeks until July 18, its moment of glory, with the 2010 Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship.

As far as returning sides are concerned, Nick Clark’s Salkeld arrives back on the scene, Roger Carlsson is also returning to the Gold Cup after several years’ absence with his team Billingbear Park and the Swiss patron Fabien Pictet is making a reappearance after four years away.

New to the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup are Nigel Warr, a Cowdray Park member taking part in the high goal for the first time, patron Philip Magor’s Panthers, including his son Ed Magor, La Dolfina Polo Ranch with Héctor Gutierrez and Nick Britten Long’s Cirencester Park Polo Club. “In such a special year for Cowdray Park Polo, the presence of English patrons is very special”, Bethell said.

“It is also the second year in which we are offering the teams four matches in the group stage. This gives them more

chances to secure their place in the final stages and makes winning the Gold Cup more demanding and also more special”, he added.

Cowdray Park Polo’s six fields are in perfect condition and will have no problems hosting the busy schedule of qualifying matches, which will also take place at the Guards Polo, Lechuza Caracas and Tripetts grounds.

“There is a very good structure with 40 matches, a lot of polo, which is needed”.Finally, Bethell explained that his biggest challenge, and desire, for this Gold Cup taking place at Cowdray Park Polo, resides in organising “a well-structured and balanced tournament which ends with the two best teams in the final of the competition”. m

He joined the ranks of team patrons Steve Gose and Guy Wildenstein in second place with three US Open wins While Outback’s Tim Gannon remains on top of the list with five Open Championships.

eorge Rawlings was born in Tyler, Texas but moved to Cincinnati, Ohio at the age of six.“I didn’t start riding until 1987, offered the former

collegiate basketball and baseball player. “it was Beverly’s (George’s wife and Crab Orchard polo team partner) idea,” he said. “She was concerned that I was working too hard and thought that I needed a hobby.”He began riding at a friend’s farm in suburban Louisville, Kentucky, and after two months purchased a $25 mallet from Kauffman’s in New York. Pinball, his first polo pony, carried him along the first leg of his journey, but it wasn’t too long before his string began to grow. After batting the ball around for a while, he joined the Louisville Polo Club where he competed in 4-6 goal polo. It wasn’t long before the newly-anointed

Crab Orchard polo team (named after Beverly’s hometown of Crab Orchard, Kentucky) was competing at the 12 goal level at the Lexington Polo Club, and the progression into high-goal polo came as a natural progression.“I think that when we first attended the United States Open Championship in Lexington, the die was cast, Rawlings said. “After seeing the polo at Santa Barbara, we were on our way.“It was actually Beverly’s idea,” he said. “For someone who initially had no experience with horses, Beverly started watching me play and became an integral part of the Crab Orchard team. Her oversight of the horses and their care is an added bonus,” Rawlings admits, “and her insight is invaluable.”

Crab Orchard scored its first high-goal accolades at the Santa Barbara Polo Club in California with Pacific Coast Open titles in 1993 and 1994, but it would be several years before the team would participate in 26-goal play.“Again, “ he smiles, “it was Beverly’s idea to take it to the next level,” he recalls. “But you’ve got to realize that any success we have achieved was a complete team effort. “Rosendo (Usandizaga) has been with us almost from the beginning,” said Rawlings, but every member of our extended team is an integral part of any success we might achieve.”In a recent visit to the Crab Orchard 40-acre compound in Wellington, Florida I was able to observe the democracy of the well-oiled Crab Orchard machine at its best. An extensive and well-prepared lunch buffet was laid out in the

barn for the extended Crab Orchard team. George and Beverly Rawlings, Adolfo Cambiaso and his teammates were intermingled with everyone from the grooms to the man in charge of keeping the Crab Orchard polo field mowed and in top-playing condition.“We’re very aware of the contributions each and every member of the team makes,” said Rawlings, “and it is only by working together that we can reach our goals.”“Outside of my church, the people in polo are the most wonderful people,” he said. “And Beverly and I have been blessed to be surrounded by some of the best.”Crab Orchard had recorded US Open championship wins in both 2007 and 2008, but sat out the 2009 high-goal season with its star and field general, 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso, electing to

stay in Argentina for the Florida winter season.“Adolfo is the key to the game,” offered Rawlings, in an effort to explain the key to the Crab Orchard success. “He is such a fine player, such a fine person.”Offering superlatives for one of the game’s best, Rawlings remarked on Adolfo’s approach to the game.“His work ethics are unparalleled,” he said. “He is absolutely committed. He gets the entire team motivated. “He’s the best player that’s ever lived. We’ll never see another player like him,” Rawlings added.As a testament to the talented Cambiaso, it must be noted that “the great one” has played on six US Open Championship teams in the last dozen years (while being sequestered behind twenty-foot tall ficus hedges at Koch’s Jedi Farm in Wellington for five years

Polo’s such a wonderful sport. Accomplishing what we did is something we’ll be able to look back on with pride for the rest of our lives.”And quite an accomplishment it was. Crab Orchard first captured the season’s single-elimination C. V. Whitney Cup,

dispensing with Audi’s two 10-goalers (Gonzalito and Facundo Pieres) in a 10-7 game. His rivalry with the Pieres brothers spans several years in the United States, Europe and Argentina, but Crab Orchard took an early lead from the 2009 defending C. V. Whitney Cup champion, and held it throughout the game. The team topped Bob Jornayvaz’s Valiente in the finals by an 11-9 score with Cambiaso accounting for seven goals himself.“Adolfo is the key to our game,” said Rawlings. “It’s all about ball control and discipline, and he makes sure that each of us knows what our job is and what we need to contribute on the field.”If the team’s initial win over Audi in the single-elimination tournament was a bit anti-climatic, certainly all eyes were on the two teams when they met again.

In a hard-fought morning game that was tied at 11-11 after four chukkers of play, Crab Orchard took control, scoring seven unanswered goals in the final two chukkers of play for an 18-11 win.The initial questions were answered with everyone wondering if anyone could stop them. “We play our game,” Rawlings said, “not another team’s game. When we’re on the field Adolfo is in command.”Crab Orchard kept its unbeaten streak going right through the USPA Piaget Gold Cup, scoring a convincing 12-7 win over Las Monjitas in the finals.“To be successful in polo, more than four players have to be involved,” said Rawlings. “It takes teamwork and coordination, and Adolfo brings that with him. We prepare for polo by playing polo throughout the week,” he

said. “We don’t practice as a team, we just play chukkers with a mixture of players,” he said. “I’m not sure that I ever played with Adolfo in practice, but we did play a lot of chukkers.”George Rawlings and his high-flying Crab Orchard polo team were quickly brought back down to earth following their open US Open loss to Audi. With a realigned lineup that moved 10-goaler Facundo Pieres to the Number 2 position and Inaki Laprida to back, Audi managed to wrench a 14-13 overtime win over Crab Orchard with Facundo accounting for ten goals himself.The loss would prove to be the first and last loss of the season, however, as the team regrouped to go winless through the rest of the Open, scoring a decisive 13-8 win over Audi in the finals.Teammates Julio Arellano and Hilario Ulloa both had their handicaps elevated to 9-goals following the victory, reminiscent of past wins that saw Jeff Blake go from six goals to seven and Pelon Stirling go from seven to eight-goals after a successful season with Crab Orchard.“He (Adolfo Cambiaso) has an innate ability to give confidence to his teammates,” said Rawlings. “He gives them the freedom to play at their highest level, and takes the pressure off of them in the heat of battle.”Rawlings recalled an incident in the semifinals of the Open when Cambiaso observed a tense Julio Arellano waiting to react to an opposing knock-in on the field. Rawlings recalled that Cambiaso looked at his teammate and said “Julio, smile.” The gesture allowed the talented 8-goaler to relax and get back to the task at hand.“He (Cambiaso) brings a confidence to the field that he shares with us,” said Rawlings, “and he puts us in a position to win.”Rawlings recalled a game in which Crab Orchard was trailing in the opening minutes of play. “He told us there were six chukkers in the game,” Rawlings recalled, “and we didn’t have to win it in the first chukker.”The high-goal season might be over for the year for Crab Orchard’s George Rawlings but don’t count on seeing him in a rocking chair on the front porch. He’ll be going back to his La Grange, Kentucky farm where he’’ take a 14-goal version of Crab Orchard (Rawlings, Chino Frayssinet, Rosendo Usandizaga and Tavi Usandizaga) to Lexington to compete throughout the summer..When asked about his plans for the 2011 season, Rawlings replied with a poker player’s response of “We just haven’t made that decision yet.”It certainly was a fairy tale season for George and Beverly Rawlings and the entire Crab Orchard family, and there will be a lot of anxious spectators and players who will be anxiously awaiting the team’s next move. m

UU. Con una alineación modificada que desplazaba a Facundo Pieres a la posición número 2 y a Iñaki Laprida de back, Audi logró hacerse con una victoria frente a Crab Orchard por 14-13 durante la prórroga con Facundo anotando 10 goles.Sin embargo, la derrota resultó la primera y la última de la temporada, ya que el equipo se reagrupó para avanzar sin tropiezos en el resto del Open, obteniendo

Fue una defi nición muy atractiva y pareja donde Pony Express, con los argentinos Tomás Goti y Michel Dorignac (quien reemplazó en la fi nal a Kris Kampsen) derrotó ajustadamente a Piaget (Nicolás Roldán y Juan Bollini) por 8 a 7 en chukker suplementario, con gol de oro de Goti.Piaget, gracias a la contundencia de Nicolás Roldán (goleador del encuentro, con 6 tantos), estuvo en ventaja durante gran parte del partido, hasta la mitad del quinto chukker, donde llegaron a vencer por 7 a 3. Following a nineteen-year career as a polo professional, trainer and breeder, Sunny Hale is a leading figure of the equestrian world in the United States. Her active participation in polo as player and executive have also earned her international recognition.

unny Hale’s résumé is undoubtedly the envy of any polo player and she is a pioneer and champion of the women’s game.

She was the first professional woman to win the US Open (2000), the most important competition in the country and the second most important on the world polo calendar. She also had the highest handicap ever given to a woman in polo (5 goals) and she currently holds the highest in the United States (3 goals).As if this were not enough, she founded and currently chairs the Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT) and has won the Polo Player of the Year prize in the Polo Excellence Awards on seven occasions.Her list of achievements include titles in the US Open, the C.V. Whitney Cup, the Hall of Fame Cup and the Ylvisaker Cup, all competitions in the United State high-goal season, as well as the Argentine Women’s Open and the US Women’s Open, to name just the most important accolades that have allowed her to play not just throughout the US but also in Argentina, England, France and even Jamaica and Singapore.

Hale is a member of the United States Polo Association (USPA) and in 2006 she founded the American Polo Horse Association (APHA), which she now chairs, a great and valuable project of international significance instigated by this prominent player. La Bocha by Snoopy Polo wanted to find out about her life’s association with polo, her career and, above all, the APHA. Sunny Hale graciously obliged and from her residence in the United State she told us the following:

¿What made you create the American Polo Horse Association? I created the American Polo Horse Association (www.americanpolohorse.com ) because I felt we were missing something in America and that was a place to research polo pony information as well as find breeders and trainers if a person was looking to buy horses. After talking about my ideas with friends, players and professionals for a couple of years I finally decided to implement them and that marked the beginning of the association in 2006. ¿The results where as you expected? Once I began collecting horse information I realized that the results, once visible to the world, of what I was going to create were going to be amazing. ¿Did you had support at every level for this initiative? I had support for the idea from every level and especially

from top players and breeders. They were all in favour of doing something to recognize the polo pony in America.

¿Which will be the next steps for the APHA? Two of our next steps for the APHA are to create performance records for registered polo ponies and to promote increased registration of medium and low goal ponies in the sport. I feel polo pony information is valuable at every level of the sport regardless of a player’s handicap. ¿It’s been hard for a woman to make a place as a polo player and create projects in a sport where men always take the lead? What I have accomplished as a professional player and in creating the two organizations is after many years of hard work and dedication and with the support and education from some of the best players in the world. I respect the opportunity to compete with and against the best players in the world, for me that was a childhood dream. I also recognize that no matter who you are, if you will pay attention to your

goals and treat your fellow players with the respect they deserve you have the opportunity to be as good as you are willing to work for.

¿As a polo player you’ve made a great impulse in women polo not only in the United States. What do you think about the great moment women polo has around the world? Do you feel responsible of this great boom? I think women players today have more opportunity than ever around the world. After spending some time talking with Peter Rizzo from the USPA and Luis Lalor from the AAP, it is very apparent of the influence and impact new women coming into the sport will have in the future in both the United States and in Argentina. The vision I had when I created the WCT (Women’s Championship Tournament) was to connect and make visible women players around the world who were dedicated to improving their polo as well as to create top level sanctioned women’s competition. For me it is a great feeling to see that vision coming to light. ¿Is polo in the United States increasing at every level or it has reached to the top? I feel that there is always room for growth in our sport at every level.

¿What are your impressions of the high goal US Polo Season? I thought the polo was much better for the fact of the new rule changes seemed to speed up the games. m

Fue la primera mujer profesional en ganar el Abierto de Estados Unidos (año 2000), el más importante de ese país y el segundo en relevancia del calendario mundial de polo. Además tuvo en su poder el handicap más alto que se le ha dado a una mujer en el polo (5 goles) y hoy posee el más alto en Estados Unidos (3 goles).Como si ello fuese poco, fundó y preside actualmente el Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT ) y ganó en siete oportunida-des el premio a la “Polista del Año” del Polo Excellence Award.

¿Qué le impulsó crear la American Polo Horse Association? Creé la American Polo Horse Association (www.americanpolohor-se.com) porque sentía que nos faltaba algo en Estados Unidos: un lugar para investigar sobre caballos de polo y en el que encontrar, criadores y entrenadores, si alguien deseaba comprar caballos. Después de comentar mis ideas con amigos, jugadores y profe-sionales durante un par de años, por fin me decidí a llevarlas a cabo y eso supuso el comienzo de la asociación en 2006. ¿Los resultados fueron los esperados? Cuando comencé a recopilar información sobre caballos me di cuenta de que cuando el mundo pudiera ver los resultados de lo que iba a crear iba a resultar sorprendente. ¿Tuvo apoyo a todos los niveles para la iniciativa? Conté con apoyo para la idea a todos los niveles, en especial de los criadores y jugadores más importantes. Todos estaban a favor de hacer algo en reconocimiento del caballo de polo en Estados Unidos.

¿Cuáles serán los próximos pasos para la APHA? Dos de los siguientes pasos para la APHA son crear informes de rendimiento para los caballos de polo registrados y promover un mayor registro de caballos de medio y bajo handicap en el de-porte. Creo que la información sobre caballos de polo es valiosa a todos los niveles de juego independientemente del handicap del jugador. ¿Le ha resultado difícil como mujer hacerse un lugar como ju-gadora de polo y crear proyectos en un deporte dominado por los hombres? Lo que he logrado como jugadora profesional y creando las dos organizaciones viene después de muchos años de trabajo duro y dedicación, y gracias al apoyo y la educación de algunos de los mejores jugadores del mundo. Respeto la oportunidad de com-petir con y contra los mejores jugadores del mundo, para mí era un sueño de la infancia. También pienso que independientemente de quien seas, si te centras en tus objetivos y tratas a tus com-pañeros jugadores con el respeto que se merecen, tendrás la oportunidad de ser tan buena como quieras serlo mediante el esfuerzo.

Con 19 años de carrera como profesional en el polo, entrenadora y criadora, Sunny Hale es referencia ineludible en el mundo del caballo en Estados Unidos. Su activa participación en el polo, como jugadora y directiva, le han valido también un reconocimiento mundial.

Como jugadora de polo, ha impulsado en gran medida el polo femenino no solo en EE. UU. ¿Qué opina sobre el estupendo mo-mento que el polo de mujeres vive en todo el mundo? ¿Se siente responsable de este inmenso éxito? Creo que las jugadoras actuales tienen más oportunidades que nunca por todo el mundo. Después de hablar durante algún tiempo con Peter Rizzo de la USPA y Luis Lalor de la AAP, resulta evidente la infl uencia y el impacto que las nuevas jugadoras que llegan al deporte tendrán en el futuro tanto en EE. UU. como en Argentina. El sueño que tenía al crear el WCT (Women’s Cham-pionship Tournament) era conectar y dar mayor visibilidad a ju-gadoras de todo el mundo dedicadas a mejorar el polo, también quería crear una competición de alto nivel para mujeres. Me siento genial al ver que el sueño se está haciendo realidad. ¿El polo estadounidense sigue creciendo en todos los niveles o ha alcanzado su punto más alto? Creo que siempre hay lugar para un mayor crecimiento en todos los niveles de nuestro deporte.

¿Qué impresión tiene de la temporada de polo de alto handicap en EE. UU.? Creo que ha mejorado mucho gracias a los cambios de las nue-vas reglas porque parece que los partidos son más rápidos. m

Dos Lunas, champions of the 2009 Gold Cup, and Ayala, champions of the Bronze Cup in the same year, also join in the tough battle that will take place in the High-goal competition.Dos Lunas will call on the talent of Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, one of Spain’s top polo players, the up-and-coming Rodrigo Rueda and Juan Gris Zavaleta, who featured for Las Monjitas in 2009 and will use his skills this year to try and get Sotogrande’s last champion back on the podium.And last but not least, Ayala are entering a high-profile team and look like serious candidates to win a trophy in the Summer Season. The Medium-goal Summer Tournament organised by Santa María Polo Club guarantees excitement every year and

2010 will be no exception.Eight teams, including the most recent champions Ayala-Esperanza (winners of the Silver and Gold Cups in 2009) and Scapa John Smith (champions of the 2009 Bronze Cup), will be responsible for offering a competition on the Río fields that always earns the applause of the Sotogrande crowds.The line-up also includes Santa Quiteria, Woodchester, La Corchuela and Isola 1892, teams that come to Santa María Polo Club every year to compete in this attractive tournament.

New to the Medium-goal this year, Anne Marie Van Gils’ Anaconda team will make their Sotogrande debut.The Low-goal, also involving eight teams, also offers some great entertainment over a month of competition on the Puente de Hierro fields.

The low handicap of the low-goal end of the Summer Tournament is made up for by the large dose of excitement, commitment and talent generally on offer in its matches.Great entertainers at this level return to Sotogrande with the intention of lifting one of the three trophies at stake. L-14, ‘Peludo’ Gariador’s champions of the 2009 Gold Cup, are keen to defend their throne.

After nearly 30 years of teaching polo and coaching some of the best teams in the world John Horswell feels he has finally found something that pulls all his talents and accumulated experience together, namely what has become known in a short time as his “SwingThing”.

now show his pupils what he can see with his highly trained eye. In this way and with the help of comparison with the swings of others he has rapidly found that he can ac-celerate the learning curve for polo players of whatever level. In addition by specifically targeting specific areas with professionals he is able to help them with specific problems in a far more targeted manner. By working with players own coaches he can help them to get better results more quickly.The analysis takes place in several different ways:-A general review of a player’s game is affect-ed by filming a series of files from 2 angles simultaneously along a specially constructed grid. These are then reviewed with the sub-ject and areas of improvement targeted.-A series of lessons to improve the pupil’s game starts with filming and analysis and is followed by practical training. The pupil is given specific drills to practise and is then filmed and analysed again at start of the next session. Providing the required progress is made then another set of files are filmed if further shots and the process repeated.-A lesson is given to work on a specific problem a pupil wishes to address. Once again this would involve filming review and

practical instruction-a clinic would involve groups of up to 5 at a time and are invaluable when done with the existing coach. Filming and analysis would be followed by a period of instruction with the coach and a programme forwards being de-vised.

John Horswell says“The ability to film the same swing simultane-ously at speeds of up to 400 frames per sec-ond is amazing. The ability to have the clients visualise their faults and then to show them images of how to improve has made my life so much easier. I now realise that in the past when I became frustrated with a pupils lack of improvement and felt that I was perhaps not explaining myself well, that it was not the case it was in fact an inability on the part of the pupil to visualise something of which they had prior experience”.

Después de casi 30 años enseñando polo y entrenando a algunos de los mejores equipos del mundo, John Horswell cree que por fin ha encontrado algo que combina sus talentos y dilatada experiencia, lo que concretamente se denomina desde hace poco como “la clave del swing.”

l utilizar un software de análisis de swing adaptado específicamente y unas vanguardistas cámaras para capturar imágenes a cámara lenta, puede mostrar a

sus alumnos lo que ve a través de sus ojos de experto. De esta forma y sirviéndose de comparaciones con los swing de otros jugadores, ha descubierto que puede acelerar rápidamente la curva de aprendizaje de los jugadores de polo de cualquier nivel. Además, al centrarse de forma específica en aspectos concretos de los jugadores profesionales, ha podido ayudarles a resolver problemas particulares de un modo más especializado. Al trabajar con los propios entrenadores de los jugadores, puede ayudarles a obtener mejores resultados con mayor rapidez.

El análisis se realiza de diferentes formas. -Se realiza una evaluación general de la forma de jugar del polista grabando una serie de archivos desde dos ángulos simultáneamente sobre una cuadrícula construida especialmente. A continuación, éstos se estudian haciendo hincapié en el problema y en las áreas de mejora.-Comienza una serie de clases para mejorar la forma de jugar mediante la grabación y el análisis seguido del entrenamiento práctico. El alumno debe practicar ejercicios específicos y se le vuelve a grabar y a evaluar al comienzo de la siguiente sesión. Si se logra el progreso necesario, se graban más archivos en caso de que se necesiten más tomas y se repite el proceso.-Se imparte una clase para trabajar en algún aspecto

específico que el alumno quiera mejorar. Nuevamente esto implica evaluar las grabaciones y practicar.-Una clase práctica incluye grupos de hasta 5 personas a la vez y resulta de un valor inestimable cuando se realiza con el entrenador actual. La grabación y el análisis van seguidos de un periodo de instrucción con el entrenador y la creación de un programa posterior.

John Horswell señala“La posibilidad de grabar el mismo swing de forma simultánea a una velocidad de 400 fotogramas por segundo es increíble. La capacidad para que los clientes visualicen sus fallos y vean las imágenes para mejorar, ha hecho que mi vida sea mucho más sencilla. Ahora entiendo que en el pasado, cuando me frustraba con los alumnos que no mejoraban y creía que quizás no me explicaba bien, no se trataba de eso sino de que los alumnos eran incapaces de visualizar algo de lo que tenían una experiencia anterior”.

ow do you feel about your recent participation in the United States season? We had a great season. I played for a new team, Valiente, starting from scratch in this 2010 season,

and we reached the final of the CV Whitney and lost in the semi-final of the US Open, both times against Crab Orchard who won everything. All of this was achieved thanks to our preparation in ad-vance.

After playing in England, what is Miguel Novillo Astrada’s tournament schedule? In August I’m going to rest and perhaps start with the Jockey Club Open, or otherwise go straight into the Tortugas Open.

When do you begin preparations for the Argentine season? In late August I begin the first practice sessions.

What kind of La Aguada can we ex-pect to see in 2010? It’s difficult to change much because we’re a team of four brothers, but we’re always working hard to im-prove the horses and one or two technical aspects.

After the auspicious return of Javier, added to your good performance last year, do you allow yourselves to dream of repeating a great season like that of 2003? It would be difficult to repeat 2003, but we always dream about it. Today we’re more focussed on winning Palermo. In 2006 we lost the final in the extra chukka and we were in all three finals of the three Triple Crown tournaments.

Then in 2008 we won Hurlingham and in Palermo Javier and Eduardo were injured, which put an end to our chances.

What has changed between that La Aguada team and to-day’s? Much has changed. At that time we were playing a very open style of polo, but now, since the sport has changed so much, we have gradually adapted to these changes. I think we now have better horses, so we’re ready to fight for the title once again. But the most important thing is that the essence of the team

has not changed; it’s the same and for me it’s the best thing we have.

Improved horses or the collective performance of teams. What for you is the reason for the stand-ards in the Argentine Open to have become so evenly matched? I think they are both reasons why everything is so evenly matched. The change in the way we play is also a very important factor. The last five finals of the Open have been decided in an extra chukka.

How is Miguel Novillo for hors-es? Very good. I’m playing with a lot of horses that I have bred myself that are performing very well. Thanks to the fact I’m producing a lot of high-quality horses I can have good ponies to ride wherever I go. I also buy horses when I come across any I like so that I always have good ponies to ride.

Aside from Argentina, where else do you have horses? I have ponies in England and the United States.

Miguel Novillo Astrada

Do you have your own horse breeding or do you share it with your brothers? I have my own. We share stallions and other things but we each have our own.

What does it mean to you to be part of a family and or-ganisation that has so much tradition in polo? I feel proud and lucky to be part of this family.

You are one of the best polo players in terms of technical quality and intelligence. What do you attribute this to? To the way I am. I realised that it was what came most natu-rally to me. I like playing like that and I have always liked that style.

I have always tried to imitate players who played in this way, and I always try to perfect it. My dad and grandpa taught me to play and they also taught me to learn from others.

What is the key to maintaining a 10-goal handicap for so long? I think the most important thing is dedication and training, like in all sports. But in polo it’s also about the horses; having good ponies to ride is a key factor. You always have to think about looking after the horses you have and also about the horses that come along, anticipating future seasons.

Except for your brothers, what polo players do you feel most comfortable playing with? At this level one feels comfortable with almost all the other players. Generally I look to adapt to the other player rather than expecting them to adapt to me.

Aside from La Aguada, which is the team in the Triple Crown whose play you like best? It’s diffi cult to say now because the game has changed a lot in recent years, but I like La Dolfi na, when they play well at Palermo, and Ellerstina when they play their own game.

The best polo player of the moment? Adolfo Cambiaso

What do your brothers most value and criticise about you? It’s diffi cult to know what your brother values about you, but one thing they criticise me for is taking it easy in training because, among other things, I’m careful with the horses.

What is it like for your family with you travelling all over the world much of the year?It’s very diffi cult. But thanks to all the support I have from my wife, its very bearable. The good thing about it all is that one spends a lot of time with the family, which is something that is perhaps lost in Buenos Aires due to school and social commitments.

After Argentina, what season do you like most or enjoy playing in most? I always say that the season is more enjoyable if you have a good team, a good place to keep your horses and a fi eld in good condition to play on. I’m lucky enough to be able to travel to Palm Beach and England, where the best polo is played and in general the working conditions are good. Sotogrande is also great fun and I love the beach. The last time I was there I won the Gold Cup, so I have fond memories. m



ómo evalúa su reciente participación en la temporada de Estados Unidos? Tuvimos una gran temporada. Jugué para un equipo

nuevo, Valiente, que arrancó de cero en esta temporada 2010 y llegamos a la fi nal de la C.V Whitney y perdimos la semifi nal del US Open y las dos veces contra Crab Orchard que fue el ganador de todo.

Gracias a que planeamos las cosas con anticipación se pudo lograr todo esto.

¿Después de jugar en Inglaterra, cómo sigue el calendario de torneos para Miguel Novillo Astrada? En Agosto voy a descansar y quizás empiece con el Abierto del Jockey Club y sino en el Abierto de Tortugas directamente.

¿Cuándo empieza a prepararse para la temporada argentina? A fi nes de Agosto empiezo con las primeras prácticas.

¿Qué equipo de La Aguada se puede esperar para éste 2010? Es difícil cambiar mucho ya que somos un equipo de cuatro hermanos, pero siempre estamos trabajando para mejorar la caballada y alguna variante táctica.

¿Tras el auspicioso regreso de Javier sumado al buen rendimiento que tuvieron el año pasado, se permiten soñar con repetir una gran temporada como la de 2003? Es muy difícil repetir lo de 2003 pero siempre soñamos con eso. Hoy estamos más enfocados en ganar Palermo. En 2006 perdimos la fi nal en chukker suplementario y estuvimos en las tres fi nales de los tres torneos de Triple Corona.

Después en 2008 ganamos Hurlingham y en Palermo se lesio-naron Javier y Eduardo lo que nos dejo sin posibilidades.

¿Qué cambió de ese equipo de La Aguada al de ahora? Cambiaron muchas cosas. En ese momento jugamos un polo muy abierto pero hoy, como cambio tanto el polo, nos fuimos adaptando a esos cambios. Creo que en la actualidad tenemos mejores caballos y por lo tanto estamos para pelear el titulo otra vez. Pero lo mas importante es que la esencia del equipo no cambio, es la misma y para mi es lo mejor que tenemos.

Mejoría en las caballadas o rendimiento colectivo de los equipos. ¿Cuál es para usted la razón por la cual se emparejó el nivel del Abierto Argentino? Creo que las dos son las razones de que esté todo tan parejo. El cambio en la forma de jugar también es un factor muy

importante. Las últimas cinco finales del Abierto se definieron en chukker suplementario.

¿Cómo se encuentra de caballos Miguel Novillo? Me encuentro muy bien. Ya estoy jugando muchos caballos de mi cría que están andando muy bien. Gracias a que estoy produciendo muchos caballos y de buena calidad puedo estar bien montado en todos lados. También compro si encuentro algo que me gusta para estar lo mejor montado posible siempre.

¿Además de Argentina en qué otros países tiene caballos? Tengo caballos en Inglaterra y Estados Unidos.

¿Posee su propia cría o la comparte con sus hermanos? Tengo mi propia cría. Compartimos padrillos y otras cosas pero cada uno tiene sus propias cosas.

¿Qué significa para usted formar parte de una familia y organización con tanta tradición en el polo? Es un orgullo y una suerte poder formar parte de esta familia.

¿Es uno de los polistas de mayor calidad técnica e inteligencia. A qué lo atribuye? A mi forma de ser. Me di cuenta que era lo que mas naturalmente me salía. Me gusta jugar de esa forma y siempre me gusto ese estilo. Siempre trate de imitar a jugadores que jugaban así y trato siempre de perfeccionarlo. Mi papá y mi abuelo me enseñaron a jugar y también me enseñaron a aprender de los demás.

¿Cuál es la clave para mantener un nivel 10 de handicap durante tanto tiempo? Creo que lo más importante es la dedicación y el entrenamiento, como en todos los deportes. Pero en el polo también esta el tema de los caballos, por eso mantenerse bien montado es clave. Siempre hay que estar pensando en cuidar los caballos que uno tiene y también hay que estar pensando en los caballos nuevos que vienen, previendo las siguientes temporadas.

¿Sin ser sus hermanos, con qué polista se siente más cómodo jugando? A este nivel uno se siente cómodo con casi todos en general. Yo generalmente busco acomodarme al otro jugador más que esperar a que se acomoden a mí.

¿Además de La Aguada, cuál es el equipo de la Triple Corona cuyo juego le gusta más? Hoy es difícil decirlo ya que el juego cambió mucho en los últimos años pero me gustan mucho La Dolfina, cuando juegan bien en Palermo, y Ellerstina cuando hacen su juego.

¿El mejor polista del momento? Adolfo Cambiaso

¿Qué es lo que más le valoran y critican sus hermanos? Es difícil saber que valora tu hermano de uno mismo pero lo que me critican es que a veces no corro mucho en las prácticas porque, entre otras cosas, cuido los caballos.

¿Cómo lleva la familia que esté viajando por el mundo durante gran parte del año?Es muy difícil. Pero gracias a todo el apoyo que tengo de mi mujer se hace más llevadero. Lo bueno de todo esto, es que uno pasa mucho tiempo con la familia, cosa que quizás en Buenos Aires por el colegio y la vida social se pierde un poco.

¿Después de la argentina, cuál es la temporada que le gusta o disfruta más jugando? Siempre digo que la temporada se hace más llevadera si uno cuenta con un buen equipo, un buen lugar para tener los caballos y una cancha en buenas condiciones para practicar. Tengo la suerte de viajar a Palm Beach e Inglaterra donde se juega el mejor polo y en general las comodidades para trabajar son buenas. También Sotogrande es muy divertido y la playa me gusta mucho. La última vez que estuve ahí gané la Copa de Oro así que tengo un gran recuerdo.m

ut this blacksmith operates far from the bright lights and fame of fashion. Cristian ‘inherited’ the profession, his grandfather and father his mentors

and role models. Thanks to a great deal of sacrifice, a sense of responsibility and a job well done, he has earned the trust of Adolfo Cambiaso, Juan Martín Nero and the Merlos brothers, among other elite polo players.On his shoulders, or rather his hands, falls the job of shoeing the horses of these sporting greats and for some of the leading organisations in world polo like Lechuza Caracas and Dubai.“It’s a family thing; my grandfather and father were blacksmiths. I was born seeing my family do this job, among horseshoes and nails. When I didn’t have to go to school I was always helping them”, Rebeschini recalls during a break in his work at the Dubai stables during the Queen’s Cup in England.“At eighteen years old I started working with my father, who taught me everything I know, until I went my own way in 2000. I started out with Adolfo Cambiaso, who had stopped playing with Ellerstina and started with Dubai”, he added.For Cristian, working for the best “is a source of pride but also a great responsibility. Experience and practice make you do your job naturally. The fact is, when you’re working you don’t think about who the horse belongs to or how much it’s worth; you do your job thinking about how to do it best and in the best way for the horse.There’s no secret; it’s all about practice and trying to apply the techniques as they serve you best. For instance, I try to make changes in a more gradual manner. I try to avoid shoeing very close to matches because horses are like people, they are a bit sensitive and the hoofs need time to get used to the shoes. Bear in mind that 500 kilos are bearing down on the ‘new shoes’. That’s why I try to shoe them two or three days before, so they can become accustomed. Experience has taught me that with a couple of days’ margin they perform better”, he explains.

As for the precise number of horses that Rebeschini works with, it depends on whether he is alone, “when I shoe around six or seven horses a day, or whether I have an assistant, in which case we shoe fifteen or sixteen. The key factor is time: if you have to spend two hours with a horse, then you do. You can’t rush your work or try to do more horses in the day”.Communication between the ‘parties’, namely the players, vets and grooms, ensures that everyone does their job in the best manner possible, and for Rebeschini this aspect is vital. “It’s a team and as such there has to be communication so that everyone does their job as well as possible”.During high-level competition Cristian shoes the horses every 25 days. “Sometimes, if there’s some kind of problem, we shoe earlier. It also depends on the horse; some need shoeing earlier and some later. The responsibility is great; in competition there are huge demands on the polo horses and you have to anticipate everything when it comes to shoeing”.In relation to the types of shoe, Cristian explains that “for a horse that is in competition, aluminium and iron are used. If the horse is resting or has some kind of problem there are therapeutic and corrective shoes. In every country they play in, there are different kinds of shoe, and naturally there are different grounds. In the United States the pitches are sandier and in England they are a bit harder. You already know what kind of shoe should be used for each place”.He has taken his blacksmithing all over the world. He went on his first trip in 1991 alongside his father ; France was the destination. Later he would visit the remaining countries where polo is played at the highest level: the United States, England and Argentina.“For nineteen years I’ve been travelling all over the place. It’s a wonderful experience. And working in these big setups is like being in a Formula 1 team. They provide everything you need; you feel very comfortable. Polo has changed a great deal and with professionalism it’s like being in a Formula 1 team”, Cristian concludes. m

l personaje en cuestión, o como dirían en el mundo de la moda, el “zapatero” de las estrellas, es Cristian Rebeschini.

Cristian “heredó” la profesión de herrero, siendo su abuelo y su padre mentores y ejemplo. En base al sacrificio, responsabilidad y un trabajo bien hecho se ganó la confianza de Adolfo Cambiaso, Juan Martín Nero y los hermanos Merlos entre otros polistas de élite.Sobre sus espaldas, o mejor dicho sus manos, recae el trabajo de herrar a los caballos de éstos grandes del deporte y a las organizaciones más destacadas del polo mundial como Lechuza Caracas y Dubai.“Lo mío viene de familia, mi abuelo y mi padre fueron herreros. Nací viendo trabajar a mi familia en ello, entre herraduras y clavos. Cuando no tenía colegio siempre los estaba ayudando”, recuerda Rebeschini en un impase de su trabajo en las caballerizas de Dubai durante la disputa de la Queens Cup en Inglaterra.“A los 18 años ya me puse a trabajar con mi padre, con quien aprendí todo lo que se, hasta que en el 2000 me largué solo. Arranqué con Adolfito Cambiaso, que había dejado de jugar con Ellerston y empezaba con Dubai”, agrega.“Trabajar para los mejores te enorgullece pero es también una gran responsabilidad. La experiencia y la práctica hacen que uno ya haga su trabajo con naturalidad. La verdad que en el momento del trabajo uno no piensa de quién es el caballo o cuanto vale, hace su trabajo pensando en hacerlo de la mejor forma y en lo mejor para el caballo.Aquí no hay secreto, todo es práctica y tratar de aplicar las técnicas como a uno mejor le sirven. Por ejemplo, trato de hacer los cambios de forma más paulatina, de no herrar muy cerca de los partidos porque el caballo es como uno, queda un poco sensible y necesita un tiempo para asimilar los cascos. Hay que pensar que ellos están con los 500 kilos sobre los “zapatos nuevos”. Por eso trato de herrar con dos o tres días de anticipación para que se acostumbren. La experiencia me ha enseñado que con un par de días previo a la competencia es mejor”, explica.

En lo que se refiere estrictamente a la cantidad de caballos con los cuales Rebeschini trabaja depende en parte de si está solo “donde hierro más o menos 6 o 7 caballos por día, o si tengo ayudante con el cual herramos 15 o 16. La clave está en el tiempo, si tenés que estar dos horas con un caballo, lo estás. No se puede trabajar apurado o pensar que se pueden hacer más caballos por día”.La comunicación entre las “partes”, es decir, jugadores, veterinarios, petiseros, hace que cada uno cumpla su trabajo de la mejor forma y para Rebeschini este aspecto es fundamental. “Esto es un equipo y como tal tiene que haber comunicación para que cada uno haga su trabajo de la mejor forma posible”.Durante la alta competencia Cristian hierra cada 25 días. “A veces si existe algún problema se hierra antes. También depende del caballo, algunos se tienen que herrar antes y otros después. La responsabilidad es muy grande, en la competición el caballo de polo tiene una exigencia muy grande y hay que prever todo al momento de herrar”.En lo que refiere a los tipos de herradura, Cristian explica que “para un caballo que está en competición se trabaja aluminio y hierro. Si el caballo está parado o con algún tipo de problema existen las herraduras terapéuticas y correctivas. También sucede que en cada país donde se juega hay distintos tipos de herraduras y lógicamente también distintos pisos de canchas. En Estados Unidos es más arenoso, en Inglaterra un poco más duro. Uno ya va sabiendo que tipo de herradura tiene que usar para determinado lugar”.El herraje lo ha llevado por todo el mundo. Su primer viaje lo hizo en 1991 junto a su padre siendo Francia su destino. A partir de ahí vinieron los demás países donde se juega el polo de más alto nivel, Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y Argentina.“Hace 19 años que estoy viajando por todas partes. La verdad que es una experiencia hermosa. Además, trabajar para estas grandes organizaciones es como estar en un equipo de Fórmula 1. Te dan todo, te sentís muy cómodo. El polo ha cambiado mucho y con el profesionalismo es como un equipo de Fórmula Uno”, agrega finalmente Cristian. m

n early Februar y with the Argentine summer in full swing, we headed out from Mar de Plata to the estancia of

Esteban Bonnani (agronomist) known by the name of ‘La Guadalupe’. We wanted to enjoy a day in the countr yside and tr y the Argentine wine Luigi Bosca, Malbec Reser va 2005, which we sampled again on subsequent occasions during our holiday in Argentina.The winer y that produces the Luigi Bosca wines today was founded in 1901 by Leoncio Arizu, a native Spaniard form Navarre who settled in Mendoza in 1890. The place chosen to set up the winer y was the Vistalba Valley in the Luján de Cuyo region, an area which due to its characteristics obtained America’s first ‘Designation of Controlled Origin’ in 2005. So Luigi Bosca launched the first Malbec DOC of Argentina and Latin America.We would have liked to visit the Mendoza wineries, but with just two weeks in Argentina there is not enough time to go ever ywhere one would like, and we had an organised programme. Mendoza is a region of wineries that I must visit one day, hopefully not in the too-distant future.On this occasion, on our day in the countr yside we tasted the Luigi Bosca Reser va Malbec. The wine has an intense ruby red colour and offers a bouquet of ripe red fruit aromas, spices and black pepper. Its intensity upon entering the mouth is complemented by the softness and sweetness of the tannins. It is a wine of great body and structure. It is aged for twelve months in French oak barrels and can keep for around ten years. The ideal ser ving temperature is 16 to 18 °C.‘La Guadalupe’ is an estancia of 1916 which originally belonged to a Portuguese and is surrounded by 2,500 acres of countr yside where wheat, soy, sunflower and corn are cultivated. The animals that live on the estate include horses, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese and cows. We were 90

km from Mar del Plata in a locality called San Agustín, 30 km from Balcarce and in the Buenos Aires province.After a lunch made for us by María del Rosario Scolari (my friend Antonella’s aunt) of chicken escalopes and a salad recently plucked from the estancia’s vegetable garden, we rested so that we could later sample the Luigi Bosca in the midst of pure tranquillity and nature.I truly do not know what was most responsible for our enjoyment: the beautiful scener y around us, the excellent company or the wine that

brought great satisfaction to our palates. I think it was a combination of these

factors and the conversation in the ‘La Guadalupe’ gardens that made

that moment unforgettable, etched into our memories so that we can remember them when they are missed.Ever y bottle of Luigi Bosca is born into privilege. Its cradle is the Vistalba Valley, an area of steeply inclined land with ideal drainage and ventilation, enjoying ver y cold spring evenings, warm summer days and cool nights, early frost in autumn and severe winters. This unique combination of soil, climactic conditions and vine work make the Luigi Bosca terroir the key to the wine’s excellence.In our conversations we travelled the world and put it to rights and we also had time to go riding, something which I do not recommend with a glass in your hand; but you have to tr y ever ything once. That night, after a few matés and facturas (Argentine pastries) with dulce de leche (a milk-based syrup that should never be lacking), we returned to Mar del Plata, but on the way we stopped for dinner at the Los Amigos restaurant in a small village called Mechongué. My friend Antonella and myself, after a complete day of countr yside, wine and horses, made our plans for the next few days to end in Buenos Aires, before ending our journey in Sotogrande, Spain.

Esteban Bonnani (agronomist) known by the name of ‘La Guadalupe’. We wanted to enjoy a day in the countr yside and tr y the Argentine wine Luigi Bosca, Malbec Reser va 2005, which we sampled again on subsequent occasions during our holiday in Argentina.The winer y that produces the Luigi Bosca wines today was founded in 1901 by Leoncio Arizu, a native Spaniard form Navarre who settled in Mendoza in 1890. The place chosen to set up the winer y was the Vistalba Valley in the Luján de Cuyo region, an area which due to its characteristics obtained America’s first ‘Designation of Controlled Origin’ in 2005. principios de febrero y en pleno verano argentino, salimos de Mar del Plata hacia la estancia de Esteban Bonnani, Ingeniero

agrónomo, bautizada con el nombre de “La Guada-lupe”. Quisimos disfrutar de un día en el campo y catar el vino argentino Luiga Bosca, Malbec Reser-va 2005, que luego degustamos en otras ocasiones durante nuestras vacaciones en Argentina.La bodega que hoy produce los vinos Luigi Bosca fue fundada en 1901 por Leoncio Arizu, ciudada-no español oriundo de Navarra que se radicó en Mendoza en 1890. El lugar elegido para ins-talarla fue el valle de Vistalba, en la región de Luján de Cuyo, zona que por sus características ha logrado la primera “Denominación de Origen Contro-lada” de América en 2005. Luigi Bosca lanza de esta manera el primer Malbec DOC de Argenti-na y Latinoamérica.Nos hubiese gustado conocer las bodegas en Mendoza, pero con dos semanas en Argentina, no da tiempo a visitar todo lo que uno quiere, y ya teníamos un programa organizado. Mendoza es una región de bodegas que tengo pendiente visitar y que me gustaría realizar en un futuro no muy lejano.En esta ocasión, en el día en el campo catamos el Luigi Bosca Re-serva Malbec. Este caldo exhibe un color rojo rubí intenso, y presen-ta aromas de frutos rojos madu-ros, especias y pimienta negra. La intensidad de su entrada en boca se complementa con la suavidad y dulzor de los taninos. Es un vino de gran cuerpo y estructura. Permane-ce 12 meses en barricas de roble francés y se puede guardar unos 10 años. La temperatura ideal de servir es de 16 – 18ºC.“La Guadalupe” es una estancia del 1916, perteneciente originalmente a un portugués, y está rodeada por 1000 hectáreas de campo donde se cultiva trigo, soja, girasol, y maíz. Los animales residentes en la fi nca son caballos, chanchos (cerdos en argentino), gallinas, patos, gansos y vacas. Estábamos a 90 km de Mar del Plata, en una localidad llamada

San Agustín, a 30 km de Balcarce, y en la provincia de Buenos Aires.Después del almuerzo que nos hizo María del Ro-sario Scolari (tía de mi amiga Antonella), de milane-sas de pollo y ensalada de la huerta, recién sacadas del jardín de la misma estancia, descansamos para luego poder degustar el Luigi Bosca con toda la tranquilidad del mundo y en plena naturaleza.Realmente no sé si el disfrute era mayor por el entorno y lindo paisaje donde nos encontrábamos, la gran compañía o el vino que nos llenaba de

gran satisfacción al paladar. Creo que era la mezcla de factores y la conversación en

los jardines de “La Guadalupe”, que hicieron de aquel momento algo

inolvidable y que se registran en nuestras memorias para poder recordarlos cuando se echan de menos.Cada botella de Luigi Bosca nace en condiciones de privile-gio. Su cuna, el valle de Vistalba. Terreno de gran inclinación, con drenaje y aireación ideales, que goza de tardes primaverales muy frías, días de verano cálidos y noches frescas, heladas prema-turas en otoño e inviernos rigu-rosos. Esta peculiar combinación entre suelo, condiciones climáti-cas y trabajo de viña hacen del terroir de Luigi Bosca la clave de su excelencia.En nuestras conversaciones reco-rrimos y arreglamos el mundo, y también nos dio tiempo a mon-tar a caballo, cosa que no reco-miendo con una copa en la mano, pero hay que probarlo todo. En la noche, después de tomar unos mates y unas facturas (pastele-ría argentina) con dulce de leche (que nunca falte) regresamos a Mar del Plata, pero hicimos una parada para la cena en el restau-rante “Los Amigos” en un pequeño poblado llamado Mechongué. Mi amiga, Antonella y quien escribe, después de un día completo de campo, vino y caballos, planeamos la agenda de los días siguientes para terminar en Buenos Aires, y luego fi nalizar nuestro viaje en Es-paña en Sotogrande.
