Language • What type of
media is this?• How do you
know?

L I A R• Language = codes and conventions NOT JUST WORDS
– Layout, colour, images, text– Camera shots, movements– Sound, music and dialogue– Graphics– Narrative
• Institution– Who makes the media text (Sky, Facebook, Sony, Bauer)
• Audience– People who listen, watch, read or use media– Grouped together in different ways (age, gender, wealth, etc.)
• Representation
![Page 9: L1 representation](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062522/586fcbf21a28aba24c8b6e41/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Representation
• The way real life is presented on TV, radio, in papers and magazines
• Groups of people are represented in a certain way so that people begin to believe ALL people in that group are like that – stereotyping
• Places, gender, social class can also be represented
![Page 10: L1 representation](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062522/586fcbf21a28aba24c8b6e41/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Language and audience
• Look at the media texts and discuss:– What type of media is it?– What kind of media language does it use?– Who is the audience?– How do you know it would appeal to that group of
people?
