Voornaamste oorzaken van het bannen van L1:
Associatie met “verguisde” taalmethodes 1
Voornaamste oorzaken van het bannen van L1:
Commercieel imperialisme: Engelstalige uitgeverijen willen
alleen Engelstalige uitgaven van hun handboeken (Weschler, 1997; Martín
Martín, 2001):
2
Voornaamste oorzaken van het bannen van L1:
Galindo Merino (2011-2012):
“The succes of certain methodological claims, such as Krashens
Input hypothesis (1980, 1981, 1985) “maximize the input / total
irrelevance of L1”or
Auerbachs English only movement (1993: 9):“English is the only
acceptable medium of communication within the confines of the
ESL classroom”.
This advice is echoed in almost every manual.”
3
“Extensive, if not exclusive, use of the
target language is a long-standing tenet of
second language (L2) teaching”(Edstrom, 2006:
276)
>< “There have always been contradicting
views about whether to use the mother tongue
of the students in the foreign language
classroom”(Tang, 2002: 1)
3
Robert Weschler
“No ASL theory can be considered complete if it does not pay
attention to the previous knowledge, common sense dictates that
L1 will always have a place in the language classroom”
“The teacher stares at the wide eyes of his new
students:“Class. We are here to learn English. As of today,
you are not to use any Japanese in this room. This is an
English-Only’class.” And it is from that moment, I would
argue, that the class is lost”(Weschler, 1997: 1)
Wolfgang Butzkamm
“How I changed my mind and started using the mother tongue in
the foreign language classroom”
http://www.fremdsprachendidaktik.rwth-aachen.de/Ww/changed.html [22/02/2010]
“Monolingual lessons without the help of the mother tongue are
extrinsically possible; however, monolingual learning is an
intrinsic impossibility. No one can simply turn off what they
already know”(…) FL is not an all-or-nothing affair”(Butzkamm,
2003: 9-37)
Butzkamms “Maxims on the use of L1”(2003: 39)
Maxim 1: The FL learners must build upon existing skills and knowledge acquired in and through the MT.Maxim 2: Ersatz-techniques14 for meaning-conveyance function less well than the MT and can even be harmful.Maxim 3: MT aids make it easier to conduct whole lessons in the foreign language. Pupils gain in confidence and, paradoxically, become less dependent on their MT.Maxim 4: MT aids can promote authentic, message-orientated communication than might be found in lessons where they are avoided.Maxim 5: MT techniques allow teachers to use richer, more authentic texts sooner. This means more comprehensible input and faster acquisition.Maxim 6: Bilingual techniques allow teachers to bypass the grammatical progression of textbooks. No postponement of the subjunctive.Maxim 7: We need to associate the new with the old. To exclude MT links would deprive us of the richest source for building cross-linguistic networks. No quarantine for MT cognates and related words.Maxim 8: It is not possible to avoid interference, but it can be greatly reduced.Maxim 9: Paradoxically, the counter-productive haphazard use of the mother tongue may be an unwanted side-effect of the doctrine of monolingualism.Maxim 10: All newly-acquired FL items have to sink roots in our minds which are eventually deep enough for the items to function independently of the MT.
Mijn algemeen didactisch advies vandaag
sociaal...)
En dit allemaal opdat de FL uiteindelijk mijn moeder(taal) zou worden!
Todo para mi madre

Van horen zeggen
“emphasis on the role of the teacher”
>< “emphasis on the student, his well-being and his
empowerment”
Butzkamm Maxim 1: The FL learners must build upon existing
skills and knowledge acquired in and through the MT.
(SIENTO >< omgekeerde
actantenstructuur SP-NL: HET spijt ME)
• Mis resultados de los exámenes de enero me pitufan vergüenza: sé hacer
mucho mejor que eso. (DAN >< omgekeerde actantenstructuur SP-NL: IK BEN
BESCHAAMD OVER X)
• Entre semana siempre pitufo de menos a mi novio. (ECHO >< omgekeerde
actantenstructuur SP-FR: X ME MANQUE)
2. Laat“fouten” niet scleroseren
“fouten” > “problemen”
= elementen tijdens tussentaalfases (“interlanguage”)
= opportuniteiten om te leren (Baralo, 2002)
Analyse van typische problemen en tussentaal:
>> “gerichte” inspanningen van lln en docent, gerichte”
input
>>> snellere progressie & hogere motivatie
"the use of L1 limited to metalanguage, instructions and
difficulties of crisis moments degrades L1 to the status
of a merely negative instrument, not making the most of
its possibilities to reinforce the learning process in a
positive way"
(Buyse, Fernández and González, 2012)
Van horen zeggen
“conceptualization of the deficient student unable to avoid interferences vs the ideal native
teacher”
><
“Belz (2002: 217) : “I paint a picture of the language learner as a multicompetent language
user who carefully and consciously uses multiple linguistic codes not necessarily for reasons of
deficiency and failure, but rather to play, represent, experiment, create, juxtapose, learn, and
grow”.“Need for a contrastive analysis: students do translate automatically, because this is
the way that new information is incorporated, i.e. by building it upon existing
knowledge”(translation as a lubricant); studies point out that L1 can yield a better
acquisition of L2” (Swain & Lapkin, 2000)
Butzkamm Maxim 8: It is not possible to avoid interference, but it can be greatly reduced.

3. Focus on meaning AND FORM
Grotere aandacht voor vorm(correctheid)
>> °cognitieve relatie tussen leerder & taalvorm
>> °verwerking op basis van het begrip van de vormen
(Delbecque, 2002)
Om die relatie op te bouwen (“co-constructie”!):
• bestaande foutieve verwerkingen identificeren
• input opbouwen met daarin verwerkt de gekende fouten
• leer- en oefenmateriaal bouwen en uitkiezen met
daarin de typische interferenties L1 en L2
(Dirven, Van Patten, Benati…)
Van horen zeggen
“negative influence on L2”; “importance of monolingual teaching”;
“it’s better to use English supported by one of these techniques
[gesture, mime] than to go into the L1”
>< “holistic vision: importance of culture and social aspects of
language”; “emphasis on cognitive processes”;“allows avoiding the
typical interferences”, “exclusion of L1: no connection with concepts
and procedures already interiorized in L1”
Butzkamm Maxim 2: Ersatz-techniques for meaning-conveyance function
less well than the MT and can even be harmful.

4. Druk op “repeat”, maar varieer
• Buyse (2010):“ . ... % of the structures one learns are
lost in less than 24 hours (Cervero & Pichardo Castro 2000: 130)
recurrent exposure to the material in differents
contexts = the only remedy (cognitive anchoring or “deep
level processing”, Schmitt 2000: 129)
• Newly taught structures are to be integrated several times :
... to ... “significant encounters” should suffice (Cervero &
Pichardo Castro 2000: 130)
• The average student is able to acquire about ... to ...
words per class for productive use, and twice as many for
receptive use
learners’ vocabulary acquisition potential should not be
overestimated (see a.o. Cervero & Castro 2000 or Schmidt & Mc Carthy
1997)
Learners need to “encounter” the new structures
several times
• in a relatively short time span
• in various ways (e.g. in other contexts, in different
class components, types of learning material,
transferring it from receptive to active use)
• always in significant and different contexts (a.o.
false friends, cognates…)
They remember new words more easily when they have
pronounced, read and written them than when they were
just repeated ten times (Schmitt 2000: 129-131),
or in other words: “un mot vu n’est pas un mot
...”, or as it is said in English “vocabulary will
not take care of ...”
(Buyse 2010)
Van horen zeggen
“The higher the difference between L2 and L1, the more difficult
for the teacher”
>< “The higher the distance, the bigger the difficulties to
teach L2 without L1”
Butzkamm Maxim 10: All newly-acquired FL items have to sink roots
in our minds which are eventually deep enough for the items to
function independently of the MT.
“A lexical or grammatical structure should appear
• at least 4 times, in different contexts, both for receptive purposes
and for productive exercises
• Selection criteria: prominence, error and interference probability…
• >< most handbooks do not observe the aforementioned principles (see,
a.o., Maciel 1997, Veraghtert 2004) and neither do the courses we
analysed””
(Buyse 2010)
LEXICAL GRAMMAR
Buyse (2010):
5. Variëren bis: laat leren in stijl(en)Studies in psycholinguistics (e.o. Aitchinson 1987, Kielhöfer 1994):
importance of multiple intelligences:
(i) language learning occurs both intentionally (generally by repetition) and
unintentionally (by reading, hearing, etc.);
(ii) both the right hemisphere (synthesis, association, creativity, visual
and acustic input...) and the left one (analysis, rationality, deduction,
verbal input) are involved; linguistic knowledge is acquired by association
(right hemisphere) and interconnected, flexible and dynamic networks (left
hemisphere); associations (with L1, L2, L3…) may be graphic, phonetic,
semantic, syntactic, personal, emotional, etc.
Van horen zeggen
“L1 not necessary, because the better the student, the less
he needs L1”
>< “could be, but need to support everyone”
Butzkamm Maxim 6: Bilingual techniques allow teachers to
bypass the grammatical progression of textbooks. No
postponement of the subjunctive.

“Begrijpen is nieuwe informative toevoegen aan degene waarover we

>> lagere niveaus: in L1 laten antwoorden ! (Martín Leralta, 2009)
6. Ga eens meer naar de receptie
Van horen zeggen
“Reduced input of L2”
>< with L1: “progress is faster, more diverse and more
customized”
Butzkamm Maxim 5: MT techniques allow teachers to use richer,
more authentic texts sooner. This means more comprehensible
input and faster acquisition.
Buyse & Fernández Pereda (2012):
“Suby and Asención-Delaney (2009) refer to various
investigations made by Chaudron and Thompson, which show that
the simplified language used by the teacher gives students
fewer chances to evaluate their input. Chaudron and Thompson
also show that beginner students of Spanish use the FL less
creatively and don’t improve their listening skills
significantly, despite receiving much input of the FL from the
teacher.”

7. Hier spreekt men Nederlands!
Met wie ga je in zee? 1. “Hellow, iek eb praktike masjine untwiekel vor oew bedreef.
Koenen wie proate?”Of
2. “Hallo, ik prachtige machine ontwikkeld hebben voor uw bedrijf. Wij praten kunnen?”
Uit onderzoek blijkt: 2 !!! Een goede uitspraak is dé manier om het vertrouwen en vooral het respect te winnen van je anderstalige gesprekspartner zelfvertrouwen te winnen.
“We do not feel that correct pronunciation is just a convenient
social grace. We assume, as many competent language teachers and
well-motivated students assume, that fluent and accurate
pronunciation is fundamental to linguistic accomplishment. We hope
these materials will lead the student to speak Spanish with less
foreign accent and greater awareness of the ways in which Spanish
sounds are different from English.(Bowen & Stockwell 1960:3)
>< In het vreemdetalenonderwijs lijkt de uitspraakcomponent NOG AL
TE VAAK bijkomstig te zijn
Noodzakelijk:
(1)Kennis van fonetische systemen L1 en L2/3… en de
gelijkenissen en verschillen
(2)Kennis van de frequentie van typische interferentiefouten
of “problemen“ (vaak gedocumenteerd, vb. Voor Spaans:

>> indien meerdere L1: via documentatie en/of input lln

Van horen zeggen
“a (native) teacher cannot (and should not) know the L1 of
his students”
>< affective and regulating importance of knowing L1
Butzkamm Maxim 7: We need to associate the new with the old.
To exclude MT links would deprive us of the richest source
for building cross-linguistic networks. No quarantine for MT
cognates and related words.
VERTALING van woorden en zinnen, maar secundair en
letterlijk “marginaal”, om de aandacht voor de VT niet

UITSPRAAK EN INTONATIE
8. “All-in taalleren”
Buyse (2010):
• Typically: simplistic word-by-word memorization > memory is
not supplied with the necessary contextualisation,
terminological variation and useful collocations
• students make the same mistakes as computer translation
programs (paradigmatic and syntagmatic structures);
e.g. "Célibataire dans Droit", literal translation of ...
Van horen zeggen
“negotiation strategies in L2 are reduced”
>< “are learnt thanks to the already interiorized ones of L1”;
studies state that motivation and output quality decrease if L1
is not allowed (Swain & Lapkin, 2003)
Butzkamm Maxim 9: Paradoxically, the counter-productive haphazard
use of the mother tongue may be an unwanted side-effect of the
doctrine of monolingualism.

• metacognitieve vaardigheden en positieve leerstrategieën

Buyse & Torfs (1997): "strategieën die over het algemeen een positief effect hebben op het leerresultaat":
• structuur leggen in de input en de output
• analyses maken en interpreteren• externe bronnen gebruiken om iets te begrijpen
• het leerproces plannen, doelstellingen bepalen
• autozelf-evaluatie• self-monitoring• een taak plannen• contrastieve analyse

PS. Begin alvast met jezelf te relativeren...
Van horen zeggen
“Stress is part of life, and in a authentic situation you
need to be able to express yourself without L1”
>< “in real life one also tries to use L1”
Butzkamm Maxim 3: MT aids make it easier to conduct whole
lessons in the foreign language. Pupils gain in confidence
and, paradoxically, become less dependent on their MT.
Gebruik van ir (“gaan”) en llevar (“meenemen” )vsvenir (“komen”) en traer (“meebrengen”)
is makkelijker te begrijpen in contrastief perspectief tegenover Nl. (of Fr.):
“Ik kom naar je feestje en zal alles meebrengen” (Iré a tu fiesta y lo llevaré todo)“Ik kom al!” (¡Voy !)
LEXICALE SEMANTIEK
Laat lln. hun eigen poëzie, muziek, e.d. (in L1)meebrengen, ze zullen zich meer “thuis”, aanvaard, zelfzeker en trots voelen.

CULTUUR
“intercomprehension”
=“la capacité de comprendre une langue étrangère sans l’avoir
apprise sur la base d’une autre langue. En général, les variétés
d’une même langue sont intercompréhensibles” (Meissner et al.,
2004).
In intercomprehension and plurilingualism didactics several
studies (e.g. Meissner et al. 2004, Vez 2007, Carullo et al.
2010) are based on the idea that common structures are more
beneficial than detrimental when learning a second or third
language from the same family.
EU is currently financing several projects aiming to design strategies, materials and activities promoting intercomprehension and plurilingualismin language learning (e.g. BabelWeb).
10. Teach them: tools are not for fools
Talen leren is meer dan woordenboeken GOED leren gebruiken.
Zet in op heuristiek!
Een paar voorbeelden van tools, o.a. om dit soort fouten te
leren vermijden:
- “I can stand my little man” (voormalig Nederlands ambassadeur Dries van Agt)
- “golden showers” over uitgaven Europese commissie (Frits Bolkenstein)
- Churchill wandelde door een park en zei: "Ah, Spring is in the air", waarop
Gerbrandy antwoordde "Why should I?"
Moderne tools voor Leesvaardigheid: Lingro en Readlang

Effect op de motivatie?
Buyse (2016):
Van horen zeggen
“allowing L1 = open the doors for the total abuse, producing
total dependency”
>< “necessary to teach from the beginning techniques in order to
overcome the problems: each instrument can be used well or
badly”
Butzkamm Maxim 4: MT aids can promote authentic, message-
orientated communication than might be found in lessons where
they are avoided.
Stimuleer het“taalbad" binnen en buiten de klas.
Maar stop er ook L1-2-3-bubbels bij, want zo
• voelt de ll. zich wel nog in een ander land, maar toch
ook bij de zijnen
• krijgt hij vertrouwen
• gaat hij verbanden leggen, verantwoordelijkheid
opnemen, meebouwen....
