WHY TARAVAL?
» Taraval Street is one of the most dangerous streets in
the city for pedestrians
» In the past 5 years, 46 people have been hit by a
vehicle while walking
» 22of those hit were getting on or off the train

L TARAVAL PROJECT GOALS
1. Improve state of good repair of our transit system
– Track and overhead replacement
– Surface repaving
– Water and sewer replacement
– Curb ramp upgrades
2. Improve safety on Taraval
– Eliminate injuries, in support of Vision Zero
3. Improve transit reliability and comfort
– Reduce long waits for the train

• No crashes during study period (2009-2013)
• Fewer than 300 daily alighting's (95% of
crashes happen when passengers are alighting, not
boarding)
Located in commercial area of Taraval
PILOT EVALUATION
Evaluation criteria:
• % of drivers complying with requirement to stop
• Any crashes at pilot locations (related to
boarding)
Install boarding islands if pilot is not
successful.
